Jason Martin Blake

The alarm in Jason's room rang softly. He never set it very loud, as he was a light sleeper and didn't need a loud blaring every morning. So, as usual, the young man himself rose slowly from his pillow, shrugging off the comforter and yawning. It was the second day of the school term, if he recalled correctly, and the first day of actual classes. He had, of course, arrived early the other day in preparation for the new year and all the work ahead of him - not just schoolwork, but his own mission of finding out what the school knew about the students and wasn't telling them.

Their list last year had become infamous. While it seemed like just an arbitrary designation set by the school, several of the assigned ethical positions made very little sense. He could understand himself being filed under 'evil,' a dualistic system had no room for those who were neither altruistic nor actively malicious and he was hardly kind. However, he had observed several other students whose end of the two-color spectrum seemed completely random. More importantly, if the school kept this from them then what else was being kept? The mysterious origin of their supernatural abilities, perhaps? Jason couldn't be sure, but he intended to find out.

After the shower, combing, brushing and general bathroom business cleared his mind of the post-sleep haze he began picking out clothes to wear. A vest today or a suit? It was the first day of classes, but the teachers were all the same as last year's (he had, of course, checked) so no need to make a good first impression. Still, better not let them think he'd slipped over the summer. He chose a clean, neatly-pressed black suit with a matching tie and polished shoes. Perfect. His morning routine now complete, Jason took one last look at the only thing that had seriously changed since he left the room last year: His new roommate, Milo.

Jason's last roommate had graduated two years previously and he'd spent the last year blissfully alone. Just as well; the man had been insufferable. Milo, who was in several of Jason's classes, had been here for two years and was much more mature, though he did occasionally socialize and tended to flirt. No matter. As Jason had specified the night before when they met in the room any such activity was to be kept outside of their domicile. No girls brought inside, none of his friends over, nothing noisy at all. He had been willing to compromise on music, though: Jason could have his classical music for an hour at most, and Milo got something he liked for just as long. On this basis was tolerance formed.

Milo seemed to be just waking up. Jason could probably spare the time to greet him, but that might mean conversation and that much time he did not have. There was a breakfast waiting for him. So, before Milo had finished yawning, his stoic roommate had left the room and was off to the cafeteria. It was a short walk, perhaps three minutes, so before long Jason had his tray full of healthy, mostly simple fare and was sitting down by himself near the edge of the cafeteria. He paused only at the sound of Myra Pandora's voice. She was going over to greet some friends of hers. He didn't often like hearing people speak, but her voice somehow didn't bother him in the slightest.

He realized he had been staring - for almost three seconds, in fact. Sloppy. Maybe he had slipped over the summer. Well that ended today. He returned his focus resolutely to his breakfast, At least orange juice didn't make you lose focus.
