Seth and Charmander soon happened upon their first target, a wild Rattata.
"All right, Charmander, let's see what you know."
He took out his Pokedex and aimed it at Charmander so that it popped up a picture of him.
"Charmander, fire lizard, basic techniques include Scratch and Growl."
Seth looked at the Rattata.
"We're going to do some training."

Charmander nodded and assumed his game face.
"All right, use Growl on that Rattata."
Charmander growled at the creature, which caused its defense to lower. Rattata countered with a Tail Whip that knocked Charmander on his butt. The little lizard shook his head and looked at Seth.
"It's all right, buddy, use Scratch against that rat."

Charmander scratched the Rattata, and because of Growl, it was a powerful attack that defeated him. The experience helped Charmander, and Seth patted him on the head.
"Good job, buddy. Let's find you another practice target, and after you get enough experience, I'll teach you a new move."
After putting the hurt on a few Rattatas and Caterpies, Charmander had gone up to level two and was ready for a new technique.
"All right, let's teach you a technique that can scorch them from a distance."

He located a Spearow and had Charmander face it.
"Toast that bird with a new technique, Flamethrower."
Charmander thought about it for a second, then opened his mouth and unleashed a ball of flame that hit Spearow dead center and sprawled him out.
"Excellent. Let's find some more enemies and see if we can get you to level five before calling it a day."
He moved through the brush with his Pokemon, unaware that another trainer had entered the woods, as well.
