He reached out and gently petted Pikachu, who seemed to sense his good intentions and enjoyed it.
"I know how you feel. A trainer and his Pokemon are never more effective than when they are friends."

He let his hand drop and turned to Sonny.
"Anyway, I gotta get back to my training. Feel free to visit Pallet Town if you'd like. There's not much to see, but it is home to Professor Oak, the foremost expert on all things Pokemon."
He turned and began walking with Charmander.
"I saw a couple Pidgeys around here, so let's see if we can find some to practice that Flamethrower technique of yours."
