The apartment was so wonderfully quiet. It was the way Addy liked it. She couldn’t sleep despite the two glasses of wine to help her wind down from the day. Her phone had buzzed a few times and while she had read the messages she had no intention of answering them.

He had grown a bit clingy. Trying for more than one date this week, texting to ask her how the day was. It was too much and while the sex hadn’t been terrible there was not enough there for her to connect with. Though it was nothing personal on him, there was never a connection for her. Some of the men she dated liked her but Addy just couldn’t find that thing that would keep her interest, bond her to them to make her really care.

If she was honest with herself there was only thing she ever really cared about, work. Not even work so much as the subject. Addy was called cold and morbid on many occasions. There had been a few potential partners that upon visiting her apartment never called again. She couldn’t help it if there were pictures of murder scenes on the table when she was working on an article. Wasn’t as if she kept them there as a conversation piece. It was work and that was always first.

The glow of her laptop screen was the only light in her small living room as she lounged on the couch. On the screen were old articles on various homicides. Blue eyes scanned the words, looking for what she wasn’t sure but Addy would know it when she read it.
**
She didn’t know when her eyes had closed but Addy nearly jumped out of her skin as her phone buzzed on the table.

“Hello?”

“You are gonna want to get to the scene before the rest do.”

Addy frowned and rubbed at her face. “Come again? What scene?”

“Handprint killer, one Marcus Brown has escaped custody while being transferred.”

She was instantly awake. “No fucking way.”

“Yeah, crash and he slipped away into the night.”

Addy looked at the time. “Where?”

Her editor gave her the details and Addy pulled on her coat. Shoes on and keys in hand she was locking her door by the time he finished. There was no one stirring in her building. Addy practically ran down the stairs to get to her car.

When she stepped outside she was struck by the fog first and foremost. Addy jogged to her car.

He escaped, this is bad. I wonder who the lead is going to be... The wheels of her mind turned a mile a minute as the car started and she pulled out of the lot.

It hadn’t been long since the crash. The area was a flurry of activity but Addy could tell these were the first responders. Those here to secure the area for the main detectives. There were ambulances there as well. The presence of the coroner didn’t escape her observations either.

Question is did the wreck kill them or did he?

The fog was going to be an advantage for her as she began slipping around the perimeter of the scene. Addy just needed one spot where an officer might not be paying much attention in order to slip inside the yellow tape and get a closer look.

Addy’s eyes took in the various streets, alleys, apartments, stores, etc in the area. If I was him where would I go?

She kept walking, her pen scribbling notes on the area, what she could see and other thoughts as she moved. How long before you kill? Are you watching all this go down? Gloating or scared?

Addy looked up and noted that the fog would make it hard for those in any upper floors to see. Ten foot visibility, maybe.
