“Well, Shawn, I think first we build some kind of frame or stand,” Walter scratched at his head, then held his hand out in front of him as if shaping an invisible object, “something to hold the shoot open so it can catch water. I’m pretty bad at that sort of mechanical planning, but if we had a good knife you might be able to work something up with these branches.”

He looked at Shawn, still hunched over slightly from the pain of the wound, “But maybe you should enlist a helper or two so you don’t strain too much and pop those sutures.”

He stopped. Everyone’s eyes had shifted behind him, staring at something farther down the beach. Walter cranked around and saw a man walking briskly towards them. He was a large young man, and looked equal parts exhausted and ecstatic.

"Holy shit dude, people! Hahaha, I'm not alone!

Walter’s face split in a wide smile and he rose to his feet. He took a few steps forward and reached out an arm to take the man’s hand.

“No, you’re not alone. I’m Walter, who are you?”
