I heard stumbling steps outside of the shack. At first I thought it was a walker but the pace was too fast. Almost as if an injured animal. "I'll be right back." I whispered to a weary Kira. I got up to my feet and grabbed my flashlight from my bag. I kept hearing the noise, circling the shack. "The hell is that?" I whispered to myself. I slowly opened the door as not to draw any attention to myself. I shined the dim light around the shack. Nothing, yet I heard the rustling of leaves. "Hmm..." I traced the noise to a shed behind the shack. The door was ajar, but jammed. I tried to pry it open as quietly as I could. After a few minutes of pulling the hinges failed and I lost my balance, causing the door to land right on me. "fuck *cough* that hurt." I said rubbing my head. As I clamored to my feet is saw a pair of shimmering Jade eyes staring at me from within the darkness. I sat there for a few minutes just staring back. "J-jade? No...it can't be." I said. Jade, our, wolf-husky mutt, had sacrificed herself to save us when we were escaping on the train. I witnessed her final moment as she was viciously torn to shreds by a group of walkers. The dark memories washed over my mind, bringing a tear to my eyes. "Jade...damn..." I said. The eyes moved closer when I said her name. "Impossible...Jaded is dead." The creature came into the flickering light. It looked exactly like her, with the exception that her one eye was actually blue while the other was bright green like Jades. "I've heard of second chances but this is crazy. There's no way you're Jade..." No sooner had I said that when she jumped me, knocking me over and licking my face all over. It was strange but I knew then that it was Jade! Somehow she had come back! Stranger things had happened...I mean I had gathered materials out of an abandoned mental asylum that was burned to the ground. And that was the least of it, but this was real. Jade was back! But there was one caveat; she was limping, like she broke her front leg in a fall. Luckily It was a clean break, so all I'd really have to do is make a splint and wrap It tight with some gaze I had in my first aid kit. "Come on in, girl. We'll fix ya right up."
We went back inside. Connor was still out cold but Kira had been sitting up straight, wondering where I was. I motioned for Jade to stay outside for a moment. Somehow she understood exactly what I meant. She always did. "What was it?" Kira asked me, afraid that it might be a walker.
"Nothing to worry about." I said as I let out a soft whistle. Jade turned the corner and bounded towards us! Kira let out a shriek of delight as she recognized the familiar face. "But I thought she died!" She whispered in amazement.
"She did...but she came back! I do think know how, but I guess it lends credence to reincarnation. Somehow she got a Second chance." I said, seeing the hope ignite in Kira's eyes. She needed...well we needed this. We needed some happiness in our lives now that this had all gone to shit... I got up from the bed and rummaged through my first aid for the guaze. I wrapped her leg as tight as possible with a small piece of wood to make a splint. "Here...this should work." She looked at me with the same eager smile Kira was giving us. I laid back down on the bed next to Kira. "Come up here, Jade." I whispered. Jade jumped onto the mattress and snuggled next to Kira. We both fell asleep shortly after that. It was the first real sleep we had in what seemed like ages.
