Ben watched as Rosemary prepared James to go under. It was all so familiar to him; the steady rhythm of the monitor, the smell of latex, the lab, the dreams, everything. He watched as James slipped into unconsciousness, slumping against the couch like a puppet with its strings cut. He smiled at the sight. That too was familiar and after all this time he still found it amusing.
He watched as Rosemary fed another line from the monitor and clamped the second oximeter to his finger. Next was the electrode then the maggot, but she hesitated when she held the squirming insect between the tweezers. He nodded to her question and tried to relax, giving her a gentle smile of reassurance. He could hardly feel the bite of the maggot on his forearm but as the saliva began coursing through his body, a dull throbbing filled his joints. He winced. It wasn't long after that that he began feeling tired from the sedative.
Before he was completely out he turned to look at Rosemary. "Hey, it's going to be okay," he muttered. And he wasn't just talking about this test run.
Darkness closed around him and he stopped fighting it. Within a matter of seconds he was out like James and entering the dreamstate.
