"It certainly might, Eris said, wondering how to connect his abilities to the behavior she'd observed in him. He hadn't seemed very dog-like, but it was certainly possible that there were many signs she'd missed. "Remind me when we get some time off, we can look through the book and I'm better between what you know about yourself and the wealth of knowledge it contains, we can find something about shapeshifters."
Eris smiled widely. "Done! Finding out the boss' species it is, I could certainly do with the money. We will have to be very clever, and I'm sure with how well you know him, we can figure out enough clues for a decent guess."
She stepped closer to the desk. "I don't suppose you could give us any further clues, in the spirit of generosity?" Eris absentmindedly twirled a piece of hair, wondering where they'd even start on the project. It was a daunting task, but she was ready to meet the challenge, and it seemed like Chou was as well.
The afternoon went by quickly. On her lunch break, she pored over the book, but she could find nothing very helpful. Whatever Molyneux' species was, he was excellent at hiding it. She'd never seen any strange appetites--in fact, he seemed to eat only reluctantly. He preferred to push humans away rather than seduce them, so if he had any method of feeding on them, as some demons did on fear, it was difficult to determine. She left the book in the kitchen where she told Chou she would, so that he could take a turn on his break once she replaced him at the bar.
The grocery run, once both of their shifts were over, was more productive. They were careful to follow the list, but Eris kept getting distracted by all of the strange and unusual items in the store. Had she more money, she would certainly have bought quite a few things simply to see what they were, but Chou's explanations were mostly enough. "That one is just a sweet," he told her, "and that is a snack that tastes like seaweed."
Eris made a face. "I am not a very big fan of seaweed."
Chou laughed. "You'll probably get used to it."
Back at the bar, they put things away, and Eris gathered the courage to ask, "What is it like to shapeshift? Do you have the instincts of the animal, the urges, or are you simply yourself in a different body?"
