Her next comment would seem random to most people, and it was random, but it wasn't a comment that was made with no connection. Holly's mind had jumped to a thousand places in between leaving Weston and this moment, but a commercial on the television before Cara switched it off featured a boy wearing jeans, and somehow that very common feature was enough to link the actor to Weston, whose jeans were still on Holly's mind. That brought her to the other part of their conversation, about his deceased grandmother, which she then connected to Cara, because the question that was on the tip of her tongue was, "If you have a family, why are you and Collin not with them on a holiday?". In a surprising move, she managed to think before opening her mouth with that one, because she knew that Cara wasn't with part of her family for a reason. Her mom was dead. It was something that had come up soon after Holly had met Cara, and given that nothing was off limits for Holly, questioning Cara on her parents wasn't too absurd. Cara had informed her that her father was alive and lived in another area of Manhattan, but her mother passed away when she was a little girl. It was unclear, even to Holly, if she was saying it to merely inform Cara, or as if it would be of some sort of comfort, but before taking another bite out of her roll she said, "Cara, Weston's grandma is dead like your mom."
