ââââââââââââââââââââ
Alice turned up the music on the radio, more or less so she could ignore the sometimes disconcerting sounds her old car made. It wasn't anything bad enough that she would fear her car spontaneously combusting or anything, it just sounded like lots of money to fix. It was better to live in blissful ignorance for as long as she could. Tapping her fingers on the steering wheel rhythmically along to the tune on the radio, eventually they pulled up around where the party was situated.
It was her friend Jessica's parent's tiny cabin. It was in the woods, fairly spread apart from any other property. From what she heard her parent's barley ever used it. They were out of town, so Jess took the opportunity. She just decided to hold it outside as to not break anything on the inside. It was a smart move.
Alice had only gotten the invite from Jess about a week ago. They weren't super close by any means, more or less just friends in English class who always partnered together for projects. Jess had made sure to tell Alice to invite Matt and Jasper to tag along as well. She had an inkling that the petite strawberry blonde haired girl had a crush on one of them judging by her tendency to randomly pop up during lunch at school and go all red in the face whenever she made eye contact with either of them. Maybe Jess even had a crush on both.
Climbing out of her car, Alice left her coat on her seat. She could see the smoke from the presumed bonfire from where the party noise came from and decided that if she got cold enough, she would come back here and get it. Twirling her keys in her hand once after locking the doors, she turned towards her friends and saw Matt already scampering along. "Watch out, you may break a hip, old sport!" She hollered back to him, laughing as she did.
Glancing over at the tall boy to her right, she gave Jasper a reassuring smile. She could see the nervous look on his face. Grabbing his hand, she gave it a light squeeze as she stated, "Hey, It'll be fine. Chances are someone's already drunkenly climbed a tree and fell or walked into the fire. They'll be talking about that more than anything else." Alice could easily tell where his apprehension was coming from. Matt and Alice where the only one's who actually knew the truth of the mysterious reason the jackass hit the car as he did.
Alice had seen the video. It was peculiar, alright. One second the dude Austin went to grab Alice rather aggressively from behind after she'd turned away, and the next his back smacked hard into the car parked behind him. Thankfully, the camera was filmed from a little ways away on an obviously less than par cellphone camera. It could be brushed off as a trick of the eye. Alice was more pissed than anything about the whole Austin being a dick by really not taking rejection well and someone filming the fight he'd initiated. Yeah, it was getting a little heated and loud before in the parking lot between them, but why would someone care to film that? Probably waiting for punches to be thrown. They'd essentially gotten what the wanted.
While Jasper hadn't been at school the days after the fact, understandably so, Alice had tried her best to dissuade any rumours from coming up. Some people thought she had pushed him too hard, or that something really weird like magic had occurred. She'd made sure the story spread around that someone had appeared from behind her own car and shoved him away, and ran off before any confrontation happened. She just 'conveniently' couldn't remember the face of the person who it was, or why he couldn't be seen in the video. 'Must be a trick of the light', she'd say.
Still holding Jasper hand, she skipped along the path after Matt, dragging him along with her. "Now come on, let's go laugh at our drunk classmates!"
As soon as they entered the space in which people crowded around, Alice let go and gave various waves and greeting's to the friends she saw. She even ran up and gave Jess a hug, being sure to thank her again for the invite and let her know the boys came. Slipping easily between people, Alice brightly smiled at Matt as she bent down behind him to wrap her arms around the sitting boy shoulders, resting her chin on top of his head. "Anna's going to call every hour and she wants to speak to either one of you to know all is well," Alice told both her friends as her hazel eyes scanned the crowd around them, people watching. "So I swear, if either one of you get incoherently drunk and say something dumb to her, I'll kick your-"
Alice's rambling comment trailed off as she spotted a face she didn't expect to see. "Oh no," she groaned, ducking behind Matt before she had time to make eye contact with Austin. The boy had been absent at school as long as Jasper. Dang, he looked a little beat up. She didn't want to talk to him. He's the one person who would know for sure no one had pushed him. She had no idea what he thought of the whole situation. Thankfully, it was a pretty busy party. More than a hundred people. They could avoid him. Hopefully.
