ββββββββββββββββββββ
Alice sat back as the group introduced themselves. They seemed nice enough, but something in Melβs smile seemed the teeniest bit false in nature. No biggie, some people just werenβt for interaction. It reminded her slightly of a retail worker who was on their last leg of greeting people at the door but was still trying their best. What really caught Aliceβs attention however was their story. Yeah, barley anyone moved to New Port, but she had only three years ago so she knew that it wasnβt outlandish. It was the fact that these three friends, who didnβt look related and seemed more friendly than family anyways, all moved together at the same time. They had to have been high school age.
Something just felt a little weird about it all. Maybe she was over thinking it, maybe not.
Snapping out of her head space, she just noticed in time that the girl Mel had offered her hand in greeting. Alice grinned, standing up from the log in order to greet her back, but before she could say anything Jasper cut her off. Here we go again..
Alice was used to this side of Jasper. His jealous streak wasnβt exactly something he tried to be discreet about. Didnβt mean it didnβt irk her. He had nothing to even worry about! Before Alice had met Matt or Jasper, she hadnβt even had friends she was close too. Yeah she socialized and bounced around circles, but she moved all the time and never kept in contact with anyone. If Jasper didnβt know he was sure as hell stuck with her for the rest of his life no matter what, she was afraid heβd never learn.
Alice moved to stand on the log to give her short stature a couple of extra inches, before reaching over to pinch Jasperβs cheek hard like a grandmother with a vengeance. βAwe, I love him, but Jasper still has yet to learn the art of manners,β she stated towards the other group. She wasnβt going to apologize on Jasperβs behalf however, no matter how much she wanted to. That was his job and it meant nothing coming from her.
Alice liked the other three, though. She still thought something was off, but none the less, she liked them. Especially Lolly for her retort. She didn't even hold back her laugh from that one.
Letting go of his cheek, she turned her attention of to Matt and the boy named Teddy to witness Mattβs (hopefully not bad) flirting. What she heard made her mouth gape open in a small βOβ shape. Having no control over the thought in her head travelling out of her mouth, she said with zero control and rather blatantly, βthey arenβt going to do it on the log right here, are they?β
After only a second of realizing what she had just said, her phone rang an annoying little chime that she still had no idea how to change. Letting out an awkward laugh, she exclaimed, βsaved by the bell!β, before hopping of the log and scurrying away beside a nearby tree.
Flipping her phone open, Annaβs voice rang through. βDid you guys get there safe? Are you alright?β Anna asked, curiosity and slight concern lacing her tone. Alice coughed dramatically, saying in-between clearly false fits, βHit tree,β cough. βSee the light,β cough. βElvis? Is that you?β She could almost imagine the eye roll Anna was giving as she stated βHaha,β with dripping sarcasm. Alice grinned as her eyes wandered around the crowd, landing on Austin once more distractingly. βYeah, weβre all good here. Just regular teenage antics,β she clarified, before freezing on the spot as Austinβs gaze turned from his friend and onto her. Shit on a stick. Alice quickly ducked away, hoping that if she went back to her group he wouldnβt make his way over there if he saw there were others there he didnβt know. βAlright, well let me speak to Matt or Jasper for a second like the dealβ. Alice didnβt want to break up Mattβs little flirting game just to tell her foster mom everything was good, so she shoved the phone Jaspers way, saying βItβs Anna.β
Turning towards Mel and Lolly, not wanting to break up the little eye tango Teddy and Matt had going on, Alice grinned and declared, βLetβs try this again. Hi, Iβm Alice, it's nice to meet you guys.β Sticking out her hand, she shook Lollyβs first before moving over to Mel to accept the handshake Jasper had blocked before. However, something unexpected happened as soon as she made contact.
Dropping her grip from the girlβs hand, a feeling of being burned from the inside coursed through her, the pain mainly concentrated in her hand. Alice hissed loudly in pain and jerked back in reaction. Her reflexes were so off that as soon as her heels hit the back of the log, she stumbled backwards over it and landed on the ground. God, she felt like she had been hit by a god damn truck. After about thirty seconds, the pain throughout her body started to fade from blinding heat to more of an intense shimmer of pins and needles.
Still lying on the ground, Alice groaned out, βdid God just smite me?β
