|| The Blond Executioner ||
Finally they landed, dwarfed by the giant trees. This was the forest just outside Min City, which was huge not just in tree size, but also in the mount of land it consisted of. The Forest of Giant Trees was big enough to count as it's own city, taking nearly twice as much space as Min City itself. They landed on the far side and entered. Somewhere in here, the Subhuman Refuge was. "Oh, sorry." Estelle scratched her ear, turning her flying light sword into a flashlight to light up the path. In here, despite the bright daylight outside on the grassy wilderness plains and barrens, hardly any light was able to trickle down through the canopy to the forest floor where the three girls walked. Almost immediately, Estelle could feel the miasma choking in around her.
She fell to her knees, her mana nodes shrieking and giving her awful pain into her spine. The miasma was always present in the air but it was particularly worse now. Her light sword flickered and died out. After about ten minutes she was able to regain control of her body again. "Thanks." Maple had been rubbing her back, trying her best to soothe it. "It happens when miasma gets too thick." She explained to her cute sister so that she understood. "Master's very sensitive and throughout the day miasma buidls up in her nodes. Most mages can process the miasma without too much harm, but Master's always been weak to it." No, no one knew why this could be mostly because Estelle only told one person of this and that person was Maple herself. Not even her lover, Hans, knew of this affliction. "I'm okay now. Let's keep going." Maybe outside the Barrier clean mana existed, free of this miasma that stunk it up.
Though it was always impossible to tell where from, Estelle could feel it, the eyes of the local denizens on them. The forest was thick and dark, the miasma even darker to the point that Maple could feel it too. "Master, I smell them, but a lot of it is magically sealed. I know they're around but not where." Maple reported, nose twitching nervously as she sniffed. They continued walking until suddenly Estelle fell to her knees again, the miasma once again clogging up her mana nodes. That was when they stepped out, a decent group of subhumans, some with horns, some with paws, some with tails, all holding magically-forged weapons at the party. "What is a human doing here? We made a treaty with the Mage King of Mithras ages ago that no humans are to come here, this is our home!"
"The kitten are welcome, it's always nice to see more anima." Anima was of course what the official term for subhumans is. But wait, King? Something didn't make sense. Remembering her history, Estelle focused, fighting through the pain. "What King? The last time we had a monarchy was hundreds of years ago... but since it fell into decay humanity has become nothing more than independent city states." There wasn't a king or single human ruler, not anymore. "I see. Well, the treaty stands. Come with us." A rabbit-eared human took Estelle by the hands. The miasma was so thick she couldn't summon her magic even if she wanted to. "As for you kitties, welcome to Anima Village!" It was a society built into the trees themselves for the Anima to live in peace.
