Getting out of the checkpoint was easy for Miiya, since she wasn’t carrying any contraband. Well, besides the copy of her GeneCorp ID that she’d picked up from its hiding place under a random loose wall panel in the central cavern. That wasn’t technically contraband, but she wasn’t supposed to have it. She had “lost” her ID, on the advice of the other interns, during her second week. Pretty much everyone in the youth program kept a spare ID stashed somewhere in BH. Nobody wanted to try to go through the hassle--and probing questions--of getting a temporary badge when you actually had yours stolen during an illicit late-night outing.

Miiya wasn’t sure what she was going to do with the duplicate ID, but there was no sense in leaving it behind. It would still be good until next week, so long as Big Bummer forgot to go back to badging and dig Miiya’s out of the pile of temporaries.

Maybe I can sell it to someone who does commercial burglaries. Serve those arflines right! She thought half-seriously, to herself.
