As Joseph continued to move down the sidewalk, he shot down any zombie he could find. The selector lever on his M16 was set to three-round burst capability, but he would need only one bullet for these creatures, especially since they were close-up. Holding the rifle reminded him of his days in the US Army, taking cover behind walls and firing at the unseen enemy. He was never sure which minute would be his last. After he was honorably discharged, he thought that those days were over. But now, as he squeezed the trigger to kill a much worse enemy, he realized that he was just as enmeshed in war as before.
