Shokunen laid his hand down gently on the young minotaur girl's head, his voice a tight whisper. "No...there aren't...if they haven't gotten up by now, they aren't going to at all. We're done..." silently he added to himself, I'm done.

As the ash settled on the Akaldai Pass in a bleak snow, a profound sense of loss swept across not only this land...but Norr itself. All across the continent similar events had and were occuring. White robed assailants appeared seemingly out of thin air to disrupt battles, slaughter camps in the dead of night and even within the hearts of major cities. Entire armies were beaten, nobles and peasants, men and women of every race wiped from the planet, every attack meeting the same end result...dragons. The great beasts that were presumed long dead swept across the earth in a rain of flame and fury. Within the span of barely an entire day, both the Civil and Savage factions collapsed under the raw might of the newly arisen dragons and their followers. It seemed the few survivors of the Akaldai were only the first of many to bear what would be known as the Day of Ashes.

The prophecy of the Final God hadn't been some riddle or half-truth...the dragons were playing the game along along. Slowly gathering strength, amassing their own armies and gaining a foothold. Nobody knows how so many of the epic creatures could go unnoticed for so long, and at this point only one option was clear. Neither Civil nor Savage could defeat the dragons alone...and no great union was founded to fight off the new threat, no cooperation for the greater good. The races simply scattered, gathered again and began to rebuild. After the devastation wrought on the Day of Ashes and the weeks following, the grief was too much and the thought of losing so many was too great a burden for any leader to bear. Those kings and queens that hadn't been slain by the attacks retreated to their own kingdoms, walling themselves off from the world. The bid for the gift of godhood was still in effect however, though it seemed the dragons were intent on beating the mortal races down. For a long while, there was only silence.
