Setting
The owner of The Golden Hall - the name in entertainment for Witchport's elite - is an expatriate of Gazria who left/was asked to leave the country when he openly condemned the revolutionaries who ended the reign of the Yevall Royal Family. When Reegard Yervin received funding from an anonymous source to start a business in Witchport, he accepted so long as he could commemorate the former King and Queen of Gazria. The name roughly translates to “Honorable House of Yevall Faithful".
The large sandstone structure, bearing a square main hall and pillared dome where the games are held, are stained a luxurious mix of yellow, green, and blue (yellow, green, and blue being the colors of House Yevall). At night, the torches and fires wash it with a golden glow, and it can be seen throughout the city, hence its name in Andiran.
Boasting numerous exclusive rooms in the cellar level, a fair courtyard abutting the shores of Witchlight Bay, and some of the most attractive and scandalously dressed attendants and dancers, The Golden Hall is an ode to decadence in an otherwise pessimistic world. A common laborer will set aside money for an entire year simply to be able to afford treating her family to dinner here at one of their smaller corner tables.
The owner’s wife, Rhemaia Yervin, a city-famous seamstress who designs and crafts gowns and slippers for nobles all over the country, will often ask the cooks to prepare special menus for the less affluent during holidays and festivals to be able to charge less coin, believing that everyone deserve to feel like royalty now and then.
Anyone who is anyone in the city spends their time at The Golden Hall. The owner, at the urging of long-time patron and man about town Baron Cyrus Blackshire, recently introduced paid memberships. Members gain preferential seating, access to the wine cellar, and are invited to special events during which they are allowed to sample special distilled spirits and culinary creations far beyond anything else available in the Southlands.
Though it may be slight hyperbole, those who have dined here say that a single meal costs what a carpenter makes in two months. And that it’s worth it.
There is a phrase native to Witchport: “eating mushroom pies.” It refers to those able to spend money frivolously and freely, as the mushroom pie served at The Golden Hall is legendary among travelers and citizens alike. “Well, I’m not exactly eating mushroom pies right now, but I think I can spare a few coins for a new set of clothes.”
