Seongjae admittedly isn't the tallest of the bunch, standing at a mere 167 cm, not quite topping 5'6" just yet. He's on the lighter side of the spectrum, but not unhealthy, weighing about 54 kg or approximately 119 lbs. Seongjae probably isn't quite as pale as the Korean ideal, but his complexion is relatively light. His rather mundane brown hair, lighter than a typical Korean's due to his European roots, hasn't been through as much hair dye as some of his friends by miles (although he does get golden highlights occasionally). It's about chin-length and typically ruffled, with a few strands masking some parts of his face. Seongjae's eyes appear light brown from a distance, but they carry strong hints of golden-amber.

Seongjae typically dresses in a casual manner, choosing loose v-neck t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts over anything overly formal or fancy. He will sometimes layer a polo shirt under his zip-up hoodies. When it gets cold, Seongjae wears his signature teal scarf that his mother knitted for him. On an average day, Seongjae will wear a black stud earring in his left earlobe, but when he does put more care into his accessories, he will typically wear a dangling gold earring of some sort.

P E R S O N A L I T Y T R A I T S
enfp-a

i. L I V E L Y
Often described as the life of the party, Seongjae is an energetic and fun-loving person who never fails to be the center of attention. He's bold and daring and incredibly courageous, sometimes to the point of recklessness. Seongjae firmly believes in living life and having fun, and is often the friend who helps his introvert peers out of their shells. Seongjae is confident with all the attention on him, be it good or bad.

ii. D O W N - T O - E A R T H
Many wrongly assume that with Seongjae's exuberant personality and people skills, that he is a self-absorbed person who has hundreds of friends that he barely values beyond having a good time with. In reality, Seongjae is quite observant and in tune with the needs and emotions of others, and is a true confidant to those who need him to be.

iii. S P O N T A N E O U S
Seongjae is the type of guy who would make a life-changing decision on a whim. He believes in living life to the fullest and letting life take you where it wants you to take you, and he has no problem with not going to college in order to pursue an unreliable ambition, because he believes that all experiences are worthwhile.

iv. E A S I L Y - B O R E D
One of the biggest criticisms that Seongjae receives from others is that he can't stay committed to anything long-term. He seeks excitement and joy in life, and while he isn't inconsiderate enough to ditch his commitments whenever he feels like it, he often won't make them because he knows he'll get bored and that he'll start seeking something else to pursue.

v. S E N S I T I V E
Although Seongjae is quite confident in the bold decisions he makes, and although he isn't fearful of others' opinions, he can be somewhat emotional and defensive when someone even starts to bring his weaknesses to light. He isn't dependent on the approval of others anymore, but he still does seek it, and will be upset if he doesn't receive it.

H I S T O R I C A L B A C K G R O U N D

Kyung Seongjae was born on September 1st to the Korean magician Kyung Miyeon and a Bulgarian man named Ivaylo Mihaylov on the South Korean island of Jeju, specifically the town of Yeon-dong. He had a happy childhood on the island; although his mom was constantly busy with part-time jobs, and his father was always incredibly distant, he always made friends easily and got along with the other children in the town. Unbeknownst the Seongjae, however, his mother was facing financial struggles and couldn't maintain a steady job on Jeju. She would have more job opportunities in the mainland, but stayed in Jeju for the happiness of her son and the appeasement of her husband, who didn't like big metropolitan cities. Despite her efforts though, when Seongjae was seven, his father walked out on the two of them and never turned back. Ivaylo was always a flighty, noncommittal man; he would have fun while it lasted, but would ditch whenever things started to look dim. Miyeon, bitter and angry from the incident, soon moved to Seoul with Seongjae to get a better life.

Despite his likable and extroverted demeanor, Seongjae had a hard time fitting in. Standard Korean and Jeju dialect were surprisingly different, and Seongjae would get teased due to his tendency to speak in dialect. However, there was one person who wasn't irked by Seongjae, and that was his future best friend, Akahoshi Hiroyuki, better known as Seong Jungmyung by his classmates. Hiroyuki, or Hiro, as Seongjae preferred to call him, was a Japanese transfer student, and had a hard time with standard Korean as well. The two of them became the best of friends; Hiro would talk about his life in Japan, and Seongjae would narrate what it was like to live on Jeju. Although Hiro would remain reserved as Seongjae reverted back to his extroverted tendencies, they knew that they would always have each other as best friends. Seongjae very quickly got over the incident with his father and learned to live a good life in Seoul.

However, it all changed when Seongjae turned sixteen. His mother's clinical depression and suicidal tendencies were getting worse, and with the stigma mental illnesses carried in Korean society, Miyeon simply couldn't just "get help." Miyeon desperately wanted to give Seongjae a better life than the one they had; they lived in a small apartment and Seongjae had to take on many part-time jobs to support the family. Miyeon stayed alive purely for the son she loved so much, but eventually, she broke. Seongjae found her in the bathtub, barely a centimeter of water in the tub, and empty bottles of pills on the counter. Even when she was killing herself, Miyeon was considerate of Seongjae; she was considering drowning herself, but stopped when she realized that Seongjae would have to handle a higher water bill.

Seongjae was never bitter about his mother's suicide; he knew she was suffering, and he was secretly glad that she was able to overlook her love for her son in order to make a decision for herself. He maintained a lively outlook on life because he knew that's what his mother wanted most for him. Sometimes he'd hear his peers call her selfish, but Seongjae knew that his mother was the most selfless person he could ever know.

Seongjae was taken into the custody of his uncle, who lived in Busan. Seongjae didn't want to leave Seoul; he couldn't bear to leave Hiro after all they've gone through together. Coincidentally, his uncle was given the opportunity the switch offices, and chose to work in Seoul to allow Seongjae to stay.

After Seongjae graduated from high school, he received an acceptance letter to a high-ranking magic school in South Korea. But the tuition was too hefty for him to pay, and despite Seongjae's love for magic, he didn't want to spend more years confined to a classroom. Later, he finds an old letter as he finally goes through his mother's old belongings, and makes a spontaneous decision of traveling to Tokyo, Japan.

P E R S O N A L R E L A T I O N S H I P S

MOTHER : Kyung Miyeon (hangul: 경 미연; hanja: 慶美燃), deceased; Seongjae's mother lived a humble life with him after his father left. However, she eventually fell victim to her severe depression after seven years. She is the person Seongjae loves the most. Seongjae sometimes writes letters to her, detailing his life and asking for advice. / FATHER : Ivaylo Mihaylov (cyrillic: Ивайло Михайлов), left; Seongjae doesn't like to talk about his father. He says it's because Ivaylo abandoned him and his mother, but really, it's because Seongjae can understand why he did (since they both have flighty personalities), and he doesn't want to sympathize with someone who caused his mother so much pain. / UNCLE : Kyung Namseon (hangul: 경 남선; hanja: 慶濫煽), alive; as Miyeon's older brother, he was deeply saddened by her suicide, and does his best to provide for Seongjae, although they aren't close. Namseon is a very quiet and reserved man. / BEST FRIEND : Akahoshi Hiroyuki (Korean name: Seong Jungmyung; hangul: 성 중명; kanji: 赤星博幸), alive; Seongjae, as a social butterfly, now has many friends, but Hiro will always be his best friend by a long shot. They talk every day.

ImageImage
"Dude, have you heard of Speed?" Hiro questioned his brunette best friend in his native tongue, sipping his cappuccino. Technically, Seongjae wasn't supposed to be talking with customers, but it was his break, and Hiro devotedly frequented one of the cafes he worked at, partly to support his best friend, and partly just to fit in some more time with him, considering Seongjae's busy schedule of part-time jobs.

"Speed?" Seongjae thought it over. "Never have. Who are they?"

"See, that's the thing, Speed is so fucking underrated," Hiro bit into his chocolate muffin as he spoke."They used to be part of Coed School back in 2012, but they disbanded. The guys - 'cause Coed School was obviously a coed Kpop group - became Speed. Practically no one knows who they are, but they're really good. Their situation is even worse than U-KISS's." Hiro chugged his coffee before continuing. "You should check 'em out, Seong-ah. Their choreo is amazing."

"I be sure to do that when my next shift's over," Seongjae replied, looking at the clock - five minutes left. Hiro frowned slightly.

"Seongjae-kun, we graduated less than a week ago," Hiro began, tone rather somber. "You got into SNUMNS, right? I mean, your test scores were brilliant."

Seongjae sighed, stealing a piece of Hiro's muffin. "Yeah, I did," he muttered. "I'm not going to college this year, though."

Hiro slamed his coffee down on the table, nearly cracking the mug. "What?!" he screeched, catching the attention of the other customers. He gave them a strained smile, bowing his head and muttering apologies before turning back to Seongjae, whispering harshly, "What do you mean you aren't going to college this year?"

Seongjae sighed again, stealing Hiro's coffee as well as his muffin. "The school gave me a partial scholarship, but the tuition's still expensive. Hiro, I'm fucking broke, and my uncle's not that rich. I can't afford it right now. Maybe next year."

"So what are you going to do this year? Work?"

"Maybe. I could travel to Japan this year, or maybe Bulgaria." Seongjae said the last part in Korean, not recalling the term for his biological father's home country in Japanese.

"Seongjae, you are in no shape to travel if you're trying to save money for college tuition."

". . . I might not go to college at all, in that case."

Hiro gaped. "Kyung Seongjae!" He snatched his coffee back. There was a long moment of silence between the two friends as Hiro sipped his coffee. Finally, the auburn-haired teen sighed. "Seongjae, if you don't want to go to college, I'll support you. In fact, I'll support you no matter what you do. But it's not going to be easy to get a good job. After all, this is South Korea. College is practically required for basic survival past the age of twenty-three."

Seongjae groaned, leaning back in his chair. He was about to reply when he boss called for him to continue work. Seongjae sat up, returning Hiro's muffin. "Gotta go right now, but about the college shit . . . who said I was staying in Korea?"

Seongjae dashed back to the counter just as Hiro got what he was trying to convey, the auburn-haired boy whipping his head around to squint at his best friend's retreating apron-clathed form.

---

Seongjae groaned - it was already eleven at night by the time he finished the day's work. He was grateful that he had the opportunity to work and earn money, don't get him wrong, but the amount of part-time jobs Seongjae worked could honestly be a pain in the ass.

Seongjae still had to clear out the boxes in the back of his closet. They were his passed mother's possessions; Seongjae knew it was rather late for him to start sorting through her things, considering that she passed away almost half and decade ago, but he never came around to it. He had, however, made it a goal to sift through the items once he graduated from high school, and that had happened three days ago.

Seongjae sifted through the boxes, waves of nostalgia hitting him. He was planning on donating things he didn't need, but he later figured out that that definitely wouldn't be happening. Every time he stumbled across something with no practical use, he found himself putting it in the "keep" pile anyway, purely for sentimental reasons.

At the very bottom of the second box was a simple envelope, made of faded cream cardstock. Seongjae furrowed a brow, slowly picking it up. He could tell that the envelope had been opened in the past, but it was resealed. Seongjae contemplated over whether he should open it or not; at last, he finally chose to do so, carefully urging the envelope open in favor of not ruining the letter.

Inside the heavy cardstock envelope was a letter made of thin, bright white paper. Seongjae opened it carefully as if it was going to crumple into dust any minute. His eyebrows shot up; it was in Japanese, and in vertical format. The brunette knew that one of his great-grandparents was full Japanese, but he wasn't aware that his mother could speak the language. Luckily, Seongjae had spent years as Hiro's best friend, and could read hiragana and katakana with ease. His kanji was a bit more limited, but there was always the internet.

Seongjae began reading the letter, opening his Japanese Dictionary app on his phone just in case:

Dear Recipient, member or friend of the Kyung (경; 慶) family,

Fortunately I am doing well, thanks to your help.

The aid my dear friend, Kyung Minseung, has supplied me, is something I can never thank him enough for. However, I can attempt to repay the favor, even if I will eternally be in Kyung Minseung's debt. The recipient of this letter, who I assume is a member of the Kyung family, or someone they deeply trust, can travel to Tokyo, Japan, and request for me at the Minami Shop, where I shall gratefully receive you and give you a space in our home, to learn and practice our ways of magic. This is not nearly enough to repay my debt, but it's perhaps the best I can offer.

Kindly look after this matter for me.

Sincerely,
南健二
January 24th, 1996

This letter is really old, Seongjae thought to himself, surprised at his findings. He looked inside the envelope once again, finding even more pieces of paper. There was a paper-clipped handful of money, with "flight money" written on a sticky note in Japanese, along with an address. Seongjae assumed that the address was for the shop.

This is actually really convenient, the scheming portion of Seongjae's mind started to kick into action. After all, I can't afford the university tuition . . . and I did say I wanted to go abroad. Plus, I could learn magic from the famed Minamis!

There was a satisfied smile on Seongjae's face as he went over the pros and cons of following the instructions in the letter. He stood up abruptly, making the sudden decision of choosing to go to Japan as he headed to his room to start packing a suitcase, searching up flights on his phone as he did so. Seoul and Tokyo were both capital cities, and were quite close to each other; booking a flight wouldn't be too hard.

True to Seongjae's words, there was a whole list of flights from either Gimpo or Incheon airport to basically any airport in Tokyo within the next three days. Seongjae booked a flight that would be taking off in 12 hours, praying that he wouldn't be kicked off because of overbooking or something stupid like that.

The brunette bit his lip, finger hovering over the KakaoTalk app as he contemplated on when to message Hiro about his spontaneous decision. Finally, he decided simply to man up and just send Hiro a quick text.

Seongjae clutched the letter in his hands, anticipation coursing through him. He entered the shop the address on the sticky note had guided him to. Seongjae glanced around the store warily, before approaching the counter and peering at the small sign placed in front of a call bell. Ring for Service, it said in Japanese. Seongjae contemplated his life decisions as he stared at the small sign, before finally deciding just to ring the bell and see where it took him.

The bell rings shrilly throughout the shop, echoing just barely in the shelf-crowded room until it disappears completely. Only three seconds pass before a circle of pale smoke rises from the floor behind the desk, lines in white paint glowing faintly before the smoke suddenly gathers in the center and whisks away into nothingness, revealing a short, smiling old woman.

Can I help you, dear?” She asks, eyeing Seongjae and resting one hand on the desk, as if to steady herself.

Seongjae jerks back a few centimeters, surprised by the woman’s sudden appearance (although he really shouldn’t be - he is in a magic shop, after all). He recovers quickly, clearing his throat. “
Ah, yes, I’m looking for a . . . Minami Kenji?

The name barely leaves his lips before the woman is beaming brighter than any light in the store. “
Ah, finally! And here I was worried that boy would never make any friends! Come, come.

Waving for Seongjae to follow her, the woman moves out from behind the counter and leads him to a rickety-looking elevator with metal bars instead of a door, chatting all the while. She introduces herself as Minami Naoko, owner of the Minami store, and goes on and on about how she’s so excited Seongjae has come, because apparently Minami Kenji is as antisocial as one can get.

She doesn’t pause to give Seongjae a chance to respond to anything she says.

The elevator zips upward insanely with no hint of movement aside from the wood they can see flying by through the gate. They pass at least four other floors in what must only be seconds, and Naoko is sliding the gate open and gesturing for Seongjae to follow her out of the elevator.

The room they enter into is less of a room, really, and more of a greenhouse. Shelf upon shelf upon shelf fills up the room, each one reaching just below the ceiling and filled to the brim with every manner of potted plants, from tiny succulents to actual thriving trees with fresh fruit hanging on the branches. Vines crawl up most of the shelves and blanket the ceiling, small flowers blooming here and there, and the whole place has a distinctly forest-like scent.

Seongjae’s gaze travels around the room (or greenhouse) in wonder. “
This is very impressive,” he comments toward Naoko in awe. “Who created this?

Ken-chan did! Well, most of it. This is his department. He’s always had a way with plants, enchanted or not. Just like his grandfather.” Naoko answers. For a moment, she has a distant look in her eyes, her smile softening in something akin to nostalgia, before she turns back to Seongjae with a gleam in her eye. “Ken-chan! You have a friend here to see you!

Naoko continues a little further into the maze of plants and stops at seems to be the end of the row of shelves. A wall of windows, most of them open, stands across from her and Seongjae, and a long wooden table stretches in front of the windows, watering cans and bags of soil and pots of all sizes strewn about the surface.

In front of the table, sat on a tall stool, is a lanky boy with blonde hair, hands wrist-deep in a pot full of damp soil. A thin flowering vine is curled around one of his arms, the biggest blossom resting on his shoulder as if watching him work, and the other small plants sitting in the windowsills all lean toward him.

He turns as Naoko and Seongjae approach, his eyes a murky brown that shifts into a deep green as he continues to stare at Seongjae in confusion.

Who are you?” He asks quietly.

Seongjae isn’t any less confused than this blonde boy is. He furrows his eyebrows and cocks his head to side, an old habit he has yet to break. There are a few moments of silence as the blonde boy awaits Seongjae’s response, the latter finally realizing that he’s the one stalling the conversation.

Oh, sorry,” he says. “My name is Kyung Seongjae,” he introduces himself, saying his native name with the proper Korean accent, “but my Japanese name is Chiaki. I came here looking for a Minami Kenji . . . who’s you, if I’m not mistaken.” Seongjae fumbles for his letter, which he had folded and shoved into his back pocket before Naoko had suddenly appeared in front of his face.

Minami Kenji wrote this letter and sent it to my family,” Seongjae tries to explain, “but the letter was written in 1996, and you . . . don’t look that old?” Seongjae attempts to make that statement not sound awkward.

Seongjae tries to process the situation, dragging his gaze down to the paper in his hands so that he doesn’t end up staring at the blonde boy the entire time. “
Unless . . . “ the brunette’s head suddenly whips back up. “If you are the Minami Kenji who wrote this letter, than you must share whatever anti-aging potions you use with the world, because there are some people who will pay good money to look young again.

Kenji just looks shocked and uncomfortable, obviously at a loss for what to say, so it’s Naoko who responds first. “
I’m afraid that’s not the case, though if anyone were to unlock the secrets of immortality, it would Ken-chan. May I?

With permission, Naoko gently takes the letter from Seongjae, her face once again taking on that nostalgic smile as she reads. “
It’s his handwriting.

Oji-san wrote that?” Kenji prods, almost whispers, expression hardened. “What for?

Seongjae falters, glancing at Naoko for a second, who gestures at him to explain. “
Well . . . apparently, my grandfather, Kyung Minseung, helped your grandfather in some way? I’m not sure how . . . but in this letter, it says -” Seongjae paused to find the specific words on the paper, “- ‘the recipient of this letter, who I assume is a member of the Kyung family, or someone they deeply trust, can travel to Tokyo, Japan, and request for me at the Minami Shop, where I shall gratefully receive you and give you a space in our home, to learn and practice our ways of magic.’

Magic is something I’m passionate about in life; I was accepted into Seoul National University for Magical Studies, but I can’t pay the tuition. I have come here to learn magic and pursue the thing I love.

There’s silence for a few beats, and then Naoko turns to Seongjae, still smiling softly. “
I'm afraid my husband passed away a year ago, but you are welcome here. If you still wish to stay, you have a place in this house and can work for a livable wage. Anything you wish to learn, I will teach you. Do not be afraid to ask." Naoko pats him on the shoulder. Distantly, a bell chimes. "Oh dear, a customer! You two have fun now, I'll be downstairs if you need me!"

And before anyone can protest, she's disappeared beyond the bookshelves, leaving Kenji and Seongjae alone together in awkward silence.

FC - Mamura Daiki ; Theme - After The Rain by Yanagi Nagi

Dialogue - #F5999D ; Thought - #81CA9D

" Yesterday rained, but tomorrow will be sunny; because there's no such thing as an eternal rain, right? "

- - - - - - - - - - -
Kenji watches his grandmother walk away with as blank an expression he can muster when he's so filled with confusion and frustration that he's genuinely considering asking this teenage Korean boy to please leave. But that would be so many levels of impolite. His grandfather wouldn't have wanted him to be impolite. Hell, his grandfather is the one who invited this kid here in the first place, even though he surely had no idea it would be this kid in particular. Kenji's never even heard of Kyung Minseung, so this letter must have been written so long ago that his grandfather had not once thought to tell the story of it. Kenji feels a little sad, that his grandfather had a friend so close he gave them an offer like this, and he never told Kenji. It had seemed like Kenji had known everything about his namesake, but perhaps the man really was just that mysterious after all. xx
A faint whisper of wind signals to him that his grandmother is gone, having used her alchemic teleportation circle. Of course she'd only have used the elevator because she had a guest. Of course. With proof that they're now completely alone, Kenji turns to Seongjae and forces himself to unstiffen, levitates the dirt on his hands back to the worktable, carefully untangles the clematis vine from his arm and leaves it to slither back to its arbor against the wall. He then bows to Seongjae politely and wrings his hands together in front of him, speaking quietly. "I'm sorry if my grandmother was a bit too forward, she tends not to let people question her. If you want to leave now that you know my grandfather is passed, I wouldn't blame you." You dumbass, you're not helping the situation! "For now, I can help find you a room to stay in. I doubt my grandmother will let you pay for a hotel when we have the space for a guest." xxx
With a simple hand gesture for 'follow me', Kenji leads the way back to the elevator and presses a button on the bottom of the panel. The button is labeled with the two kanji characters meaning Minami. He says nothing as the elevator plummets downward, stopping after a few short seconds. This time, instead of the gate opening onto the first floor of the shop, the back wall opens onto a long hallway with wood floors and open shoji doors on the left, showing glimpses of a garden outside. "Please wait here a moment." Stepping into the hall, Kenji turns back around and places a hand against an invisible wall that runs from the top of the door frame all the way to the floor. A spell shimmers across the surface of the invisible wall and after a moment, Kenji moves back, gesturing for Seongjae to enter. "This doorway is enchanted so that only members of the Minami family can enter, but you should be able to walk through it now." xsx
Kenji leads Seongjae down the long hallway and around a corner, the garden visible from the left throughout the journey. The shoji doors along the right side of the hall are all closed tight, and no sounds can be heard from within. He pauses next to a stretch of wall just as plain as the rest, and opens it to reveal a room with nothing but a neatly folded futon in the corner and a clearly enchanted window with a view of a roaring ocean. "I'm sure my grandmother has a plan to put more furniture in here, likely enchanted to look however you want it to, but for now, do what you like. The room itself is a pocket dimension that will adhere itself to your own magical energy, meaning no one can enter without your permission. As such, you won't be able to find or enter any of the other bedrooms in the hall, so don't worry about accidentally stumbling into one. Feel free to wander about the house and the shop, but please don't touch anything. A lot of items are enchanted and can cause issues if handled incorrectly." Feeling like he's been talking for hours, Kenji deflates. xxx
"I apologize if I seem frank. I'm not... I'm not used to having guests. Especially guests my age. If you have any questions about... anything... just ask." xxx

"Oh dear, a customer! You two have fun now, I'll be downstairs if you need me!"
The woman who introduced herself as Minami Naoko pat Seongjae on the shoulder, before disappearing and leaving Seongjae standing awkwardly with the lanky blonde boy.
Seongjae was no doubt taken aback by the events that had just taken place. The elder Minami Kenji . . . passed away? That detail was far from the most surprising thing.
I can't believe I was actually offered a place in this home . . . and a job! Hiro will be shocked once I tell him about what happened today.
Before Seongjae could do anything, Kenji bowed to the brunette politely and started speaking in a soft voice. "I'm sorry if my grandmother was a bit too forward, she tends not to let people question her. If you want to leave now that you know my grandfather is passed, I wouldn't blame you. For now, I can help find you a room to stay in. I doubt my grandmother will let you pay for a hotel when we have the space for a guest."
As Kenji led Seongjae into the elevator, Seongjae bowed slightly out of gratitude. "Thank you for your hospitality. Don't worry, your grandmother seems like a lovely woman! In fact, all of you are clearly very generous people who I'd like to become friends with. As long as you'll allow me, I am interested in remaining here and helping out around the shop."
By the time Seongjae had finished speaking, the elevator had reached its destination. The back wall opened to reveal a long hallway. After telling Seongjae to wait, Kenji placed his hand against an invisible wall in the doorway. Seongjae watched in fascination as the doorway shimmered.
"This doorway is enchanted so that only members of the Minami family can enter, but you should be able to walk through it now."
Seongjae marveled at his surroundings and at the amount of magic utilized in the Minami home as Kenji led him down the hallway to what would presumably be his room. Although Seongjae's mother taught him a decent amount of magic back in her happier days, she never incorporated it into their everyday lives and lived as though she were an average human, without the assistance of magic (although in modern times, living such a life was unusual). After she passed, Seongjae started using more magic for everyday situations, as most people did, but he had never seen people use magic like the Minamis did.
Finally, Seongjae and Kenji halted near the end of the hallway. Kenji opened the door to reveal a plain room with a futon in the corner and an enchanted window displaying a view of the ocean. The blonde quickly explained the magic of the room, and cautioned Seongjae about the enchantments placed on the items strewn throughout the house and shop.

"I apologize if I seem frank. I'm not . . . I'm not used to having guests. Especially guests my age. If you have any questions about . . . anything . . . just ask."
"Oh no, you're completely fine. Don't worry about seeming frank -- I think you're being very hospitable. Likewise, if you have any questions for me, feel free to ask! I'm pretty open about everything, even things that most people would consider personal, so there's no need to hesitate if you want to know something about me. I mean, I did just randomly come into your home with a letter from your grandfather, so if anything, you should be questioning me." Seongjae chuckled and grinned unabashedly.
"Ah, but I guess I do have some questions already. If you wouldn't mind me asking, how old are you? I'm eighteen -- I just graduated from high school last February. Do you have any other family members who live here? I just want to know who else I should introduce myself to, haha. Also, your eyes are really cool -- how do they change color every minute or so like that? Is that a spell, or something else?"
Seongjae cut himself off, realizing that he had basically been bombarding the poor guy with questions."Ah, sorry, I talk a lot. I'll work harder at restraining myself if it bothers you; I know not everyone likes small talk." Seongjae flashed the blonde another smile, rolling his suitcase up against the wall as he did so.

Minami Kenji

FC - Mamura Daiki ; Theme - After The Rain by Yanagi Nagi

Dialogue - #F5999D ; Thought - #81CA9D

" Yesterday rained, but tomorrow will be sunny; because there's no such thing as an eternal rain, right? "

- - - - - - - - - - -
"Oh no, you're completely fine. Don't worry about seeming frank -- I think you're being very hospitable." Kenji takes a breath, nods, tries to push down the lingering paranoia that he's making his grandmother's guest uncomfortable. "Likewise, if you have any questions for me, feel free to ask! I'm pretty open about everything, even things that most people would consider personal, so there's no need to hesitate if you want to know something about me. I mean, I did just randomly come into your home with a letter from your grandfather, so if anything, you should be questioning me." He's right, actually. But what would I even ask? Kenji allows himself to wonder. He tries to think of something to ask: what do you really want in coming here, why did you leave your family behind to come here from an entirely different country- xxxxx
But before his thoughts are completed, Seongjae is talking again, and Kenji feels slightly thankful for the interruption. He doesn't need to say anything he'll regret. Or anything stupid. Speak not. Is that a spell, or something else?" xx
Seongjae pauses, and apologizes, and Kenji realizes it's probably more than obvious that he really wants nothing more than to escape from his current situation. He's standing ramrod straight, fingers fidgeting with the hem of his shirt, expression (hopefully) as blank as can be. Kenji shakes his head at Seongjae's apology, even if the kid is right. "It's no problem," He lies. "You can't expect to know how someone will respond to conversation. Especially strangers." xx
"To answer your questions, I'm twenty. I graduated a year and a half ago. My parents and sister also live here, as well as my grandmother. I doubt you'll see my parents much, if at all. They're away on a business trip and I doubt they'll be back anytime soon. My sister Kaori apprentices with my grandmother after school, so you'll likely meet her within the shop itself. You're... a lot like her." Kenji pauses, not quite sure how he wants to broach the sensitive subject if his eyes. He'd been ridiculed for them as a child and hid them away, and now here's a stranger calling them cool. "It's an illusion charm. I cast it in the morning when I wake up, just around the eyes to save mana. The spell doesn't change my eyes, just what other people see when they look at them. The illusion changes color according to the light refracted into my eyes, so in the dark they'll appear black and in direct sun they'll be white." xx
Kenji shifts nervously and looks down at the floor, trying to avoid Seongjae's gaze. The guy is too bright, too lively- it's driving Kenji insane how out of his element he feels. Even Kaori isn't like this with him. The only person he knows who can be so kind and overbearing is his grandmother, and Kenji can only stand her because he's spent his entire life dealing with her particular strange tendencies. Kyung Seongjae, despite any similarities to his excitable sister and eccentric grandmother, is uncharted territory, and Kenji does not like uncharted territory. With spells, maybe. But definitely not with people. Absolutely not. xxx
Kenji gets the distinct feeling of being watched, and knows a customer must be in the greenhouse, his plants calling for him to help. "I still have work to do today, so I need to leave. If you need anything, my grandmother will be in the shop. Just ring the bell." And thus Kenji takes the clean out he was given. xx

"It's no problem," Kenji responds softly to Seongjae's apology. "You can't expect to know how someone will respond to conversation. Especially strangers."
Seongjae should've been reassured by the statement, but as a natural extrovert, he spent a lot of time socializing with people, and could recognize the uncomfortable yet polite introvert when he saw one.
"To answer your questions, I'm twenty --" Huh, so a couple years older than me. "-- I graduated a year and a half ago. My parents and sister also live here, as well as my grandmother." A sister? That's exciting. Seongjae was an only child, but Hiro had both an older and younger sister, and while Seongjae didn't interact with them that much, it was always fun when he did. "I doubt you'll see my parents much, if at all. They're away on a business trip and I doubt they'll be back anytime soon. My sister Kaori apprentices with my grandmother after school, so you'll likely meet her within the shop itself. You're . . . a lot like her."
That certainly wasn't unpleasant for Seongjae to hear. It would be nice to meet a kindred spirit -- not that there was anything wrong with Kenji. People often assumed that due to Seongjae's lively nature, that he wouldn't be that fond of quieter folk, but there were qualities Seongjae appreciated in his more reserved friends.
"It's an illusion charm," Kenji continued speaking, now talking about his eyes. "I cast it in the morning when I wake up, just around the eyes to save mana. The spell doesn't change my eyes, just what other people see when they look at them. The illusion changes color according to the light refracted into my eyes, so in the dark they'll appear black and in direct sun they'll be white."
Kenji finished speaking and began to shift his feet, avoiding Seongjae's gaze. "That's a really cool spell," Seongjae said. "The most I've done to change my appearance with magic is to highlight my hair." Seongjae gestured to the golden-brown highlights strewn through his brown hair. "Oh, and a few years ago, I also used a spell to give myself a digital perm -- is that how you say it? Sorry, my Japanese isn't that great. That stuff's really popular in Korea, but a good haircut isn't cheap. My best friend back in Seoul has eyes similar to yours, though. They're usually a reddish-brown, but depending on the light, they can turn amber or even violet! I'm not sure if it's magic or not, because he says it's all natural, but no one really believes that. Regardless, it's still really cool."
Seongjae wasn't sure how uncomfortable he was making the blonde, but Hiro, who was pretty uncomfortable in social situations, once told Seongjae he felt more comfortable when people just rambled on because it simultaneously got rid of awkward silences and any chances for him to talk.
"I still have work to do today, so I need to leave. If you need anything, my grandmother will be in the shop. Just ring the bell."
"All right, then. See you later, Kenji-san!"
With that, Seongjae gazed at his room for a few moments, taking it in, before starting to unpack. He left his clothes sitting in his suitcase, but took out his toiletries, sketchpad, and drawing utensils. Seongjae attempted to use a charm to create a desk with drawers similar to his desk at home, with some success. It was far from identical to the desk he used in Seoul, but it had drawers and was definitely usable. After he set down his sketchbook and tossed everything else in the drawers (Seongjae admittedly wasn't the most organized person), Seongjae took his phone out and called Hiro, who picked up after a few rings.
"Oh thank god, Seongjae, you haven't died yet." The amount of relief in Hiro's voice was almost insulting.
"Not only am I still alive," Seongjae responded cheerfully, "but guess what? The Minami family actually accepted me and gave me a place to stay in their home. Heck, I was even offered a job! With wages!"
"Holy shit, that's great. Don't take offense to this, but I didn't expect you to do so well so early on."
"Oh, it's fine. To be honest, I didn't expect it either."
After Seongjae finished catching up with Hiro and responding to messages from his uncle and other friends, he set out to explore the Minami home. He marveled at the garden visible through the open shoji doors, before entering the elevator, pressing a button to go to the shop floor. The elevator doors opened to the sight of Minami Naoko presumably finishing up business with a customer. Seongjae grinned when she saw him and started towards her.
"Naoko-sama! Thank you, once again, for your hospitality. I was actually just looking for you!" Well, Seongjae didn't set out with the purpose of finding Minami Naoko, but now that he did, there was something he wanted to ask her. "I was just wondering, what kind of work can I do to help out around here? You've been so kind, so I want to start making it up to you as soon as I can."

"Well, why don't we start with a tour of the shop? If you're going to work here, you must know where everything is," Naoko said, offering her hand. When Seongjae took it, a map of the Minami shop and home flashed in his memory. Among all the unfamiliar areas, he noted the lack of a greenhouse, but he didn't say anything.
Naoko then kindly guided Seongjae through the first floor, demonstrating some spells that Seongjae was eager to learn or review. Occasionally, they would stop so Seongjae could assist a few customers, which he did with ease -- not because he was the most knowledgable on magic, but because he was comfortable around people and great at customer service (after all, most of his jobs had been in either food or retail).
Naoko, in the middle of explanation on teleportation, paused to turns towards the elevator, which opened to reveal a young teenage girl in a school uniform. She was somewhat pale, and with her honey blonde hair in a bob, she looked like a younger, livlier, and female version of Kenji.
Ah, so this must be Kaori, the little sister.
"Obaa-chan, I'm home!" the girl exclaimed. "Guess what we did today in class? We're doing our necromancy section of the textbook and Sensei brought in an actual necromancer, they brought this dead frog to life and -- oh I'm sorry. Customer." The blonde teenager halted her rambling when she finally noticed Seongjae's presence.
Naoko chuckled before saying, "No, actually. This is Seongjae, darling, he's going to be working here for a while and staying with us in the main house."
"Staying with us? Why? Is he homeless or something?" Seongjae raised his eyebrows, amused. Bold kid. Seongjae started to understand why Kenji had said that Seongjae and Kaori were similar earlier, but Seongjae hoped that he had more tact than her (he probably didn't) (no offense to Kaori, she seemed like a fun kid).
"No. Your grandfather apparently sent for a student many years ago, and Seongjae is simply the first to respond." Kaori's cheerful expression faded, and she gazed at Seongjae with a look of longing envy. He suddenly felt a little guilty -- this was the first time he had looked back at his choices from the last 48 hours, and it did seem like he was just barging in to claim something that wasn't his. He hoped that the others didn't see it that way, and that they didn't think of him poorly. "And as your grandfather is no longer here, I have taken it upon myself to house him. Your brother and I have both shown him about to a degree, but I believe you two will get along, if you'd like to introduce yourselves."
"Well, if it's what oji-chan wanted, it must be for good reason." Placing her faith in her grandfather, despite no explanation for anything that's happening? Huh, he must've been a good guy. "I'm Kaori, by the way. You're Seongjae? Is that Korean? Did you come here all the way from Korea? Just for a letter? Because if you did, that's pretty damn ballsy. Especially since you're, like, a kid. And probably broke and homeless."
Seongjae laughed. "Hey, I'm glad you think it's ballsy and not idiotic. Yes, my name is Kyung Seongjae, although you may call me Chiaki if you wish. I came from Seoul, and yeah, I guess I did put my fate in a piece of paper. But it was among the things my mother had left for me, and your grandfather mentioned my grandfather, Kyung Minseung, in the letter, so I assumed it was worth listening to. And watch who you're calling 'kid,'" Seongjae said playfully. "I'm eighteen, so I say I've got a good three or four years on you, at least. And I can assure you, I'm not homeless, but broke? Well, that part is debatable." Seongjae grinned cheerfully.
"So you're studying necromancy in school? Necromancy is actually one of my favorite magical subjects! Unfortunately, South Korea is pretty strict about magic. All the magic schools are elite private schools or universities, and it's technically illegal to practice necromancy, although it's still possible if you're willing to go through a really bureaucratic process. Sadly, that means that there aren't any lessons on necromancy in Korea. I think it's so cool that your teacher brought in a necromancer for your lessons!"
Seongjae turned slightly towards Naoko as he continued speaking, his next statements directed toward both of the Minamis in his presence. "That's actually another reason why I was so quick to come here! I can't say I'm too familiar with magic laws of other countries, but South Korea is really restrictive on magic -- the only people who can learn it are of the upper class, since it was money that got you anywhere. And yeah, I did get accepted into a good magical university, but Japan overall seems more open to magical learning, so I thought it'd be better to come here anyway."
"So, Kaori-san," Seongjae directed his next words towards the teenager once again. "What area of magic do you specialize in?"

Seongjae listened sympathetically as Kaori explained her situation. Magic wasn't really a tangible thing, and it could understandably be difficult to get a grasp on. When Seongjae was younger and more temperamental, he'd give up on magic constantly, before his curiosity would tempt him to return. He was always capricious like that. It was a wonder that Seongjae had managed to get it together and focus his energy to get where he was today.

When Kaori mentioned only learning through a textbook and not through experience, Seongjae truly empathized with her boredom. Part of the reason why he hated the Korean school system -- besides the strict control on magic, of course -- was that they always made a big fuss about studying day in and day out. Seongjae and his friends had to study nonstop for hours on end after school -- often until midnight -- so they could do well on the Suneung, the sole exam at the end of their high school years that would determine the fates of their adult lives. Seongjae hated it. He would envy the main characters of the American movies he watched and the colorful lives they led.

"Hey, didn't you say Kenji helped? Or something? Earlier? Seems weird and out of character. He doesn't like people, so don't take it personal if he like, never wants anything to do with you the whole time you're here. He doesn't even hang out with us except to eat dinner, so the chance of him making friends with a total stranger is pretty damn low." Kaori's tone grew bitter and Seongjae furrowed his brows. He'd assumed Kenji was just freakishly introverted, but Kaori's expression said that there could perhaps be more to the story. Seongjae didn't want to overstep his bounds with this family and screw everything up, but if Kaori and Kenji's relationship was strained, then he couldn't just stand by and watch it remain that way.

"If you don't mind me asking," Seongjae directed his words towards Kaori, "Are you and your brother not close?" Am I overstepping my bounds? Probably. Ah, goddamnit. "Ha, I know you literally just met me, but you seem like a pretty cool person, Kaori-san." He really meant it. Seongjae had a lot of friends, but that wasn't to say he blindly formed a connection with everybody he met. People were just so interesting and unique, and even the most different of human beings were able to appeal to Seongjae's nature. "I'd love to be your friend. And hey, like I said, I know we just met, but if you ever wanna talk about anything, my door's always open." Seongjae flashed Kaori another one of his signature amiable grins.

XX Minami Kaori
"If you don't mind me asking, are you and your brother not close?"

Kaori stares at Chiaki for a long moment, completely floored that he actually cares. Even Kaori's parents have never taken the time to ask about her and Kenji's strained relationship. Kaori's not sure they've even noticed how much their son has changed, and if so, it's clear they don't care. Even Naoko, the person Kaori goes to for everything, has been little help when it comes to Kaori and her brother- all the women ever seems to say is "be patient" or "he's hurting, forgive him."

Chiaki apparently notices her shock and indecision, because he fidgets a little, suddenly anxious.

"
Ha, I know you literally just met me, but you seem like a pretty cool person, Kaori-san. I'd love to be your friend. And hey, like I said, I know we just met, but if you ever wanna talk about anything, my door's always open." And Kaori can see in his face that he means it.

"
You're pretty damn smooth, you know that?" Is the first thing Kaori says, a smirk playing on her face. "But c'mon, do you really think I wanna discuss personal business with you?"

Kaori knows she's being too harsh, can see it in her grandmother's watchful gaze, but she forces herself not to care. Chiaki, nice as he is, is a complete stranger- sweet and charming and clearly the kind of person who cares too much for everyone around him, strangers or not. Kaori likes him, but there's no way she's going to be won over so easily. He'll have to try a little harder.

She can practically hear her friends chanting "tsundere" in a circle around her and Kaori frowns.

Gathering her things with a dramatic sigh, Kaori bows politely to Chiaki, then makes her way out of the room, barely pausing to greet a few regular customers as she passes them by.

XX Minami Naoko
Naoko can't help the frown that coats her face as Kaori instantly pushes back against Seongjae's questioning. She knows her granddaughter is private, that she doesn't trust easily, but she's known the girl too long to not see what this really is: a test. To see how Seongjae reacts to being rejected, if he'll pursue her and try to make amends, or simply give it up as bad luck and spend the rest of his time in the household pretending his offer never existed in the first place.

Naoko has known Seongjae less than three hours, but she doubts he'll pursue that last option.

For the sake of her grandchildren, she truly hopes he doesn't.

"You're pretty damn smooth, you know that?" Kaori smirked and Seongjae knew she'd be a tough nut to crack. "But c'mon, do you really think I wanna discuss personal business with you?"

Seongjae shrugged and gave Kaori an easy smile. "That's fair," he said. Seongjae knew that his openness could come off as a little intrusive. It was easy to forget that a lot of people weren't as generous with sharing their life stories as Seongjae could be.

"Let's just be friends then," Seongjae continued graciously. "We can talk about whatever. But my offer still stands, if you're ever interested in it later on. No pressure, though."

Seongjae turned to Naoko after Kaori took her leave, and gave the older woman a warm smile that was somehow softer than his previous grins. "Naoko-sama, please tell me if I'm being too much." There was a thin layer of nervousness under Seongjae's genial tone. "I know I'm a stranger, and I know nothing about your family. But life's too short to be unhappy, right? I try to help people out, but I know not everyone may appreciate this. I trust you, Naoko-sama, so if you think I am being too intrusive, I'll follow that advice. Otherwise -- I mean, I guess I do a lot of things by my own initiative." Seongjae finished his speech bashfully, but unashamedly, knowing how much truth his last statement held. After all, he flew to Japan and completely crossed college off the list without a second thought. And although Seongjae liked to consider himself a nice and polite person, he didn't really hold himself to the traditional South Korean values of unconditional obedience as a form of respecting one's elders.

"Anyway, I can't thank you enough for taking me in," Seongjae said. "I'll work my hardest, on both whatever I may learn and working at your lovely shop. I won't let you down, Naoko-sama.

"Kenji-san works in the greenhouse, right? Wow, I can't believe he manages that entire place, the plants are amazing. If I may, Naoko-sama, I'm gonna go check it out! I'm not very good with plants, so it's all pretty interesting to me. Again, thank you so much for providing me this opportunity. It means more to me than I can say. If you ever need any favor, just ask me, and I'd be happy to help you out!"

With a final bow, Seongjae left with a brief wave, retracing his steps to the greenhouse. Fortunately for him (and maybe unfortunately for Kenji, but he wouldn't really know), Kenji was still in the greenhouse. Before Seongjae could talk himself out of it, he blurted out, "Hey, Kenji-san!"

Contrary to whatever shamelessly outspoken character Seongjae displayed, he was rarely fully confident in his actions. He had anxieties like anyone else would -- but the thing about Seongjae was that he was impulsive, and he always jumped into action before his nervousness could stop him. Sometimes, it meant he acted without thinking -- but it's not like Seongjae would ever take anything back.

Thus, Seongjae arrived to his present issue: Kenji was, undoubtedly, introverted as hell. Seongjae's biggest internal debate when it came to dealing with introverts was whether he should approach them or just leave them alone. He knew some introverts just struggled at approaching and confronting people, even if they wanted to talk -- in that case, Seongjae's sociability was appreciated. On the other hand, some people just didn't want to interact with others at all, and subsequently found Seongjae comparable to an obnoxious fly that wouldn't stop buzzing in their ear.

The thing about introverts is that they're a lot harder to read than extroverts. Seongjae never wanted to be the fly. But he also wanted to be the person people appreciated for approaching them first. And Seongjae, at this point, couldn't tell what kind of introvert Kenji was, so he had to go in for the kill (and possibly get rejected in the process, which is sad as fuck, but c'est la vie).

"I know I talked to you earlier," Seongjae continued, "but we still don't much about each other! And if I'm gonna be here for a bit, might as well get to know each other, right? Ask me anything you'd like!"

XX Minami Naoko

"Naoko-sama, please tell me if I'm being too much." Seongjae starts, and Naoko nods with a soft smile; she knows he means well, but her grandchildren are far too guarded to see it in him.

She listens to Seongjae's speech with quiet attention. And he's right- she wishes her grandchildren could let themselves be happy, could let others in. Kaori is doing better than Kenji, in that regard, but not that much better. Naoko watches both her grandchildren turn away from opportunities she knows they would have loved to take, had their grandfather been around to encourage them.

Seongjae is surprisingly self-aware, she notes. He understands that not everyone can put up with constant optimism. She knows it's the thing about her that frustrates her grandchildren the most.

(Hoping Seongjae can get through to Kenji with her same methods is, perhaps, wishful thinking.)

"
Anyway, I can't thank you enough for taking me in. I'll work my hardest, on both whatever I may learn and working at your lovely shop. I won't let you down, Naoko-sama."

Naoko can't help but smile at his earnestness. "
I'm certain you won't. You show much promise, and you haven't even gotten to work, yet! I think we both have a lot to look forward to."

"
Kenji-san works in the greenhouse, right?"

"
Yes," She says, caught a little off guard. She hadn't expected Seongjae to mention Kenji so soon after being rejected by Kaori, but then, he is and optimist, is he not? "He's the floor manager."

"
Wow, I can't believe he manages that entire place, the plants are amazing. If I may, Naoko-sama, I'm gonna go check it out! I'm not very good with plants, so it's all pretty interesting to me." Seongjae says, eyes full and bright. He stands, gathers his things, grins from ear to ear.

"
Again, thank you so much for providing me this opportunity. It means more to me than I can say. If you ever need any favor, just ask me, and I'd be happy to help you out!"

Naoko nods, returns his bow, and watches him disappear into the elevator. As the lights above the elevator door flicker to indicate he's reached the greenhouse, Naoko lets out a sigh.

Then she goes back to work, doing her best to focus on customers. She has a job to do, after all.

XX Minami Kenji

Despite taking the first opportunity to escape conversation with Seongjae, Kenji finds he can't get the younger boy out of his mind. He supposes something as strange as a Korean teenager arriving at your door with a letter from your dead grandfather, asking to be tutored... well, it's something you don't forget easily, and there aren't enough customers to distract him from thinking about it.

Kenji wonders just how long Seongjae is going to stay. A while, probably- his grandmother had invited him to stay for a full apprenticeship, after all. Kenji's not sure how to take it all.

He knows how he's taking it. He doesn't like it. But then, when did he ever like new people?

With oji-san, probably. Kenji thinks to himself.

As with every memory of his grandfather, Kenji droops a little, wishing more than anything that the man could be there with him. He would've liked Seongjae, Kenji thinks- knows, even.

The bright red trumpet vine flower resting on Kenji's shoulder rubs its petals against his neck, its vine curling tighter around his arm to get his attention. Kenji's thoughts are derailed and he takes a moment to just breathe, thoughts of his grandfather sinking deep down withing him.

And, as if echoing the vine's efforts to distract him from his grief, someone calls his name-

Seongjae.

Kenji can't help the way his shoulders tense, the way his breath catches. He's skeptical of this kid. He can't help that either- letter or no letter, Seongjae is a stranger, and Kenji has never had the patience for making friends. There's a reason he spends all day every day surrounded by plants.

He turns from his not-really-being-worked-on-worktable as the trumpet vine slowly uncurls to observe the newcomer. Seongjae is standing at a respectable distance, an easy but still bright smile on his face. Kenji nods a greeting, more or less assuming that Seongjae will speak first.

"
I know I talked to you earlier, but we still don't much about each other! And if I'm gonna be here for a bit, might as well get to know each other, right? Ask me anything you'd like!"

Ask him?

Somewhere in the back of Kenji's head, a voice that sounds disturbingly like his grandfather's is telling him that this might be the first time a stranger has given Kenji the chance to ask questions first, instead of just asking him questions and only offering to answer his as an afterthought.

And as much as Kenji would like to avoid meeting new people... he kind of already has. It's clear Seongjae isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so what's the harm in small talk?

(Kenji's sanity, he thinks briefly, before offhandedly realizing he's being incredibly rude.)

So, instead of turn the boy away like part of him wants to, Kenji gestures to the stool next to his, one usually used by his grandmother. Then he turns back to his plants, confident in his ability to multitask. As Seongjae sits, several plants reach out to him, a few of the shier flowers blooming.

Huh. They must like his energy. Strange.

"So," Kenji starts, almost whispering, tripping over himself. "What do you plan on studying?"

YES! Seongjae mentally cheered as Kenji offered him a seat. I mean, this really isn't much of an accomplishment, right? Even if Kenji didn't like me, it's not like he would be rude or something. He definitely doesn't seem like that kind of person. Seongjae wilted slightly on the inside at his revelation, perking up again when a few of Kenji's plants physically reached out to him. Seongjae, admittedly, was not really a plant person (to the surprise of many, which always confused him a little), but that was more due to the fact that he wasn't really good at taking care of them, rather than disliking them completely.

"So, what do you plan on studying?" Seongjae perked up again when Kenji spoke. Sure, he was basically whispering, but a start was a start.

"Honestly, I'm eager to learn everything! Magic in general is pretty interesting to me. But as for what I like in particular, I'm pretty interested in necromancy and shapeshifting. I just think it's so novel, you know? Like you can't really find anything that's remotely related to those things outside of magic. But like I said, I'd like to learn everything I can."

After Seongjae finished his ramble, the conversation once again lulled to a pause. Seongjae could continue the conversation by asking Kenji any one of the questions that were rolling through his head, but before his mouth could start blabbering again, he suddenly was reminded of something.

Kenji and Kaori lost their grandfather -- Naoko's husband -- only a year ago . . . damn, I didn't even think about that. There was just so much happening -- how could I forget about that? Grandfather Minami Kenji is the only reason I'm here . . . they could all still be grieving, it really is hard to lose a family member. Suddenly, Seongjae was struck with an idea, and like always, went ahead with it without really thinking it through.

"I've probably made you really uncomfortable with my constant talking, haven't I?" Seongjae said bashfully. "And right now I'm gonna say something that may be a bit . . . invasive? Like, more invasive than everything else I've said, ha. Please stop me if I make you uncomfortable.

"Firstly, I'm truly, truly sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose someone you're really close to -- someone who you've lived your entire life with, someone you can always rely on. Um --"
You IDIOOOOOT! Why are you making assumptions about his relationship with his grandfather? Why are you talking about this, you literally just met today! You don't know anything about this guy! Seongjae, SHUT UPPPPPPPPPPPP!

But I mean, he works with enchanted plants, like his grandfather apparently. Who follows in the footsteps of a family member they dislike? No one!

Kyung Seongjae, you need to shut your blabbering mouth right now! AHHHH, you need to learn about how to respect people's boundaries! Seongjae, you better stop --

"Okay, if I'm making really incorrect assumptions, or if this doesn't apply to you at all, please tell me to shut up." Seongjae chuckled nervously.

KYUNG SEONGJAE!

"But, I don't know, as much as I seem like someone who doesn't know anything about the real world or whatever, I really do understand what it's like. My mother, she died a couple of years ago. My dad was never really there, so it was just us two, you know? No matter where we went, we always had each other. And after her death, it wasn't like I was really alone -- I have a lot of friends I really cherish, and I had people who were there for me. But as much as I tried to move on with my life, it was really difficult. I knew my mother would've wanted me to live happily, so that's what I tried to do, but her death and my grief were in every corner of my life. I would walk past the elementary school I used to go to, and I would just remember how my mother dropped me off on the first day. I would walk past the grocery store, and all I could think about was how I bought ingredients for our favorite meals and how we would cook together. Her presence was always there when she lived, so when she left, the lack of it was so . . . jarring. I faced it everywhere I went, even if I tried not to.

"Sorry, I'm getting off track. Um, basically, I truly and absolutely understand what it's like, and I really empathize with anyone who loses someone important to them. I'm sorry, I really shouldn't be assuming anything about your relationship with your grandfather, I know I'm basically a stranger --"

Seongjae, I told you this. You need to start listening to your head before your mouth starts going off like it always does, you know. You're actually pretty smart up here -- sometimes, at least.

"-- and I know you would probably never talk to me about something so personal. But, um, if you ever do, just know you always can talk to me. And if you don't want to talk to me about that, you can always ask me anything -- including stuff about my mother."

That does it, Seongjae. You really dug yourself a ditch this time.

"So, yeah!" Seongjae practically squeaked when what he had said finally set it. Oh my god, why did I say that? I'm moving too fast -- that's like having sex on the first date!

Told you so.

"Now what were we talking about?" Seongjae laughed nervously. He really wanted to disappear right now.

XX Minami Kenji

"Honestly, I'm eager to learn everything! Magic in general is pretty interesting to me."

How generic, is the first thing that comes to Kenji's mind, and he silently scolds himself for yet again being incredibly rude. Then again, is it still rude if you don't actually say it?

When Seongjae continues, though, Kenji can't help his surprise. Necromancy and shapeshifting are both high-level magic- mages study for years just for the right to practice. Kenji had expected Seongjae to say something like enchantments or high-level charms. Kenji realizes he only sees Seongjae as some kid- naively optimistic, in over his head, unsure of his desires.

A rather narrow opinion, Kenji thinks.

"
Interesting." Kenji offers. He doesn't look up.

The conversation lulls, and Kenji doesn't look up, doesn't say anything more. There's a large part of him that just wants Seongjae to get bored and leave him alone with his plants and music.

"
I've probably made you really uncomfortable with my constant talking, haven't I?"

Everything in Kenji's body becomes rigid. Shit. He must have shown something on his face- that, or Seongjae is much better at reading the atmosphere than he'd thought. Kenji goes to apologize, but he can't get the words out, because Seongjae is right. He's right, as rude as that seems.

Kenji kind of wants to leave.

"
Firstly, I'm truly, truly sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose someone you're really close to -- someone who you've lived your entire life with, someone you can always rely on. Um --" Seongjae mumbles, sounding far more uncomfortable than before.

And holy fuck, now Kenji wants Seongjae to leave, because he is so sick of hearing this spiel.

So many people- classmates, teachers, customers, have all said this shit to him, and it makes his blood boil, because they don't know what it's like. Those words are nothing more than empty platitudes- a cheap way to feel like you're being sympathetic while someone else crumbles.

But then... Seongjae continues, and Kenji listens. And Seongjae understands.

Seongjae lost his mother- and not even that long ago. His dad is MIA- Kenji can relate to that, as his parents are never around anymore, and aren't involved when they are, which is almost worse.

"
I would walk past the elementary school I used to go to, and I would just remember how my mother dropped me off on the first day. I would walk past the grocery store, and all I could think about was how I bought ingredients for our favorite meals and how we would cook together. Her presence was always there when she lived, so when she left, the lack of it was so . . . jarring. I faced it everywhere I went, even if I tried not to"

Kenji understands. Even sitting in this very room, with his grandfather's plants all around him... as much as he wants to be here, chose to be here- it can be suffocating, sometimes.

"
I'm sorry, I really shouldn't be assuming anything about your relationship with your grandfather, I know I'm basically a stranger --" You're not, Kenji finds himself thinking, "-- and I know you would probably never talk to me about something so personal. But, um, if you ever do, just know you always can talk to me."

And, after all that, Seongjae seems to freeze up, dismissing everything with a very out-of-place laugh. Kenji pries his fingers off the pot full of dirt he's been holding in an iron-grip.

There's a long, awkward silence, and Kenji's thoughts are conflicting wildly with each other.

Seongjae is no longer a stranger, somehow. They haven't even had a real conversation- Kenji's added nothing the entire time they've been sitting here. And yet...

For the first time, Kenji feels like he wants to say something. He hasn't talked to anyone about his grandfather's death - not his grandmother, not Kaori, especially not his parents - and yet-

I knew my mother would've wanted me to live happily,

Is this what his grandfather would have wanted? For him to try making a friend, for once?

(Kenji knows the answer.)

"
I've only ever had oji-chan, really," Kenji starts, his words too quiet, "which sounds dumb, because I have oba-sama, and my parents and Kaori, but... we've never been close. I know nothing about what they like, or how they go about their lives... they're strangers, to me."

Kenji takes a deep breath, not used to genuine conversation. He tries to make eye contact with Seongjae- only a few short seconds, swallowed up by sparkling gold, and he has to look away.

"
I've always picked up magic easily, and kids my age would be intimated or jealous. Which was fine, because I had oji-chan. All I ever wanted was to impress him. To make him proud of me. But now... it feels like I'm lost, with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I sit here every day, doing his job, and nothing changes. I never feel any less hollow."

Kenji turns to face Seongjae, finally meeting his gaze. "
I envy you, a little. You had no one, lost everything, and yet, you're so much more adjusted. You kept on living, finding happiness."

"
I'm not sure I can."

"I've only ever had oji-chan, really," Seongjae mentally gave himself serious whiplash when Kenji started talking, "which sounds dumb, because I have oba-sama, and my parents and Kaori, but . . . we've never been close. I know nothing about what they like, or how they go about their lives . . . they're strangers, to me."

Honestly, Seongjae couldn't relate to that -- beyond having his mother as essentially his only family member, Seongjae also tried to make friends wherever he went. No, Seongjae couldn't relate to what Kenji was saying, but he could try to understand -- after all, they were friends, now . . . right?

"I've always picked up magic easily, and kids my age would be intimated or jealous. Which was fine, because I had oji-chan. All I ever wanted was to impress him. To make him proud of me. But now... it feels like I'm lost, with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I sit here every day, doing his job, and nothing changes. I never feel any less hollow."

When Kenji turned to finally make eye contact, Seongjae was shaken -- this was the first time he could look into the rolling depths and the swirling colors in Kenji's eyes for more than a flicker of a moment. "I envy you, a little. You had no one, lost everything, and yet, you're so much more adjusted. You kept on living, finding happiness. I'm not sure I can."

The first thing Seongjae felt after Kenji's speech was being taken aback by utter shock. Seongjae assumed that he would be walking out of this meeting, cringing with shame and embarrassment.

The second thing was understanding, and an overwhelming urge to reassure the other man.

"It's important not to compare yourself with other people, especially when it comes to loss," Seongjae said adamantly. "We're all different, and we all have different experiences.

"And Kenji-san? I know it seems like I have no one left, but just because I lost both of my parents doesn't mean I lost everything. Personally, I'm a really social person, so I'm lucky enough to have a large support system. And honestly, I feel like how much you lose . . . it's not determined by how much you physically have left -- it's just something you feel. And I believe that what you feel isn't really determined by objective factors, like how many family members you have left, or how much money you have, or how good you are at something. If you're grieving over someone you were really close to, of course your feeling is justified -- it's is completely okay to feel like you've lost everything, even if you don't think you lost everything objectively, because maybe the person you lost was everything to you.

"And I know I seem well-adjusted to people. Heck, some people don't even believe me when they learn that I lost my parents -- I just seem so happy to them, which I'm kinda glad to hear from them, since it's something I constantly try to be. But believe me, I was an absolute wreck in the beginning -- I didn't recover from my mother's death immediately, and I still don't think I'm fully recovered. Her death . . . will always be a part of my life. But it's important to not have someone's death be your entire life. At least, that's what my counselor told me, haha. It was really nice to have someone there to help me through it, even if she was paid. I don't think I could've gotten out of my slump on my own."

Seongjae turned to make eye contact with Kenji, smiling softly. "If you want, I'd be glad to help you out. Having someone there really does do a lot. After all, a tree that's falling over can't right itself up on its own. That was also something my therapist said . . . I'm not as wise as her yet. But it would really make me happy if I could do for you what someone else did for me." Seongjae grinned, but not as aggressively as he did before. Now that I've gone through enough traumatic experiences of fruitlessly trying to befriend him, I should tone it down to match Kenji's style (҂ ͡-₃ ͡-)ᕤ

"My first piece of advice -- and this comes free of charge," Seongjae said cheekily, "is to know that the people we love are always with us in our hearts. And I know, that is literally the cheesiest thing I could've said, but it's true; after my mom passed, I felt absolutely horrible about myself. I thought of her death at every moment, and how I wasn't good enough to keep her here. I started losing motivation, because the person I tried to work my hardest for was gone. But after a lot of time, and a lot of help, I finally began to understand that even if I couldn't keep my mother here, she would still want me to achieve my goals and to chase after whatever makes me happy. I guess that's why I have such stupidly high dreams -- I know necromancy and that kind of stuff are way out of my skill level right now, but I want to chase after it. And every time I start to feel lost, or every time I start to think I don't deserve this -- I just think of what my mother would really want. Because her desire for me to be happy didn't disappear when she died. And if there's an afterlife, and if she's watching me from up there, I want her to look at me and find the joy she couldn't find when she was alive.

"Kenji-san, your grandfather sounds like a good man. I'm positive that someone you loved so much would've wanted for you to be happy. And don't be too hard on yourself, okay? This stuff takes time and a looooot of effort sometimes, but it's truly worth it."

XX Minami Kenji

"It's important not to compare yourself with other people, especially when it comes to loss. We're all different, and we all have different experiences." Seongjae says, words firm.

Makes sense, Kenji thinks. Isn't that what his grandmother had said, too? That grief is different for everyone, that no one sees it the same way, and that's why it's so hard to talk about it?

I really have underestimated Seongjae, haven't I? I guess age does mean nothing...

Seongjae continues to speak, sounding ever so wise, and Kenji continues to listen, feeling guiltier and guiltier as time goes on. He's made so many assumptions in one afternoon, all of which have now been proven false- Seongjae isn't some naive kid, nor is he perfectly adjusted. Kenji may not be the best with people, but he can see the well of grief and hidden emotion in Seongjae's eyes.

Maybe the person you lost was everything to you, that line catches Kenji's attention and sinks into his brain, because fuck, his grandfather really was everything to him, ever since he was little.

It's not quite fair to the rest of his family, is it?

Kenji can't help but frown at the idea of seeing a therapist. He has no interest in paying someone to listen- he has plants all around him who listen better than most humans. But then, that's not all therapists are for, is it? They're a shoulder to lean on, it seems, someone you can rely on.

Kenji doubts he could trust anyone with his feelings the way he's trusting them to Seongjae (and wow, when the hell did they end up like this?!) but a part of him feels glad that Seongjae could.

What is it about this random kid that makes everything feel so strange?

(Kenji knows what it is, knows that this is new- what his grandfather would call bonding, for all that Kenji has never experienced it before. But still, why Seongjae? Kenji's logical brain hurts.)

Kenji can't take his eyes off Seongjae, couldn't possibly tune him out. He describes his emotions after his mother's death, and they're exactly how Kenji has felt. He's felt heavy, lost, stuck in time. The difference between him and Seongjae, right now, is that Seongjae kept going. He's aimed for the highest height and taken steps to get there. Kenji hasn't- he doesn't know where to aim.

"
Kenji-san, your grandfather sounds like a good man." He was. "I'm positive that someone you loved so much would've wanted for you to be happy. And don't be too hard on yourself, okay? This stuff takes time and a looooot of effort sometimes, but it's truly worth it."

Kenji isn't sure he believes Seongjae, not completely, so he makes no promises. But he does make a decision; the decision his grandfather would have made, were he standing here beside them.

"
If you want to learn necromancy, you won't be able to ask oba-chan. She knows the theory, but she's never practiced it in depth." Breathe in, breathe out. "I have, though."

For just a moment, Kenji hesitates. The last time he'd practiced necromancy, he'd almost killed half his class. He doesn't even have a practice license, though it wouldn't be hard to get one. What if something goes wrong? What if he fucks up again and actually kills someone this time?

This is what stops you every time. You think too much and never do anything interesting.

Kenji forces his shoulders to loosen, forces himself to look Seongjae in the eye again, oh boy is he gonna have to get used to that, then offers: "I can teach you. When we're not working."
