I hold back a cry of pain as my father's punch sends me sprawling on the floor of the kitchen. My head hits the tile and black spots dance in my vision as he kicks me again and again. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, the blows stop.

"Get off the goddamn floor!" he bellows with a slurred voice. "You're gonna be late for school!" Trembling, I slowly stand up and hold onto the counter for support. My father comes at me again, shoving me towards the back door. "Out!" he yells. I nod fearfully.

"Yes, Daddy, I'm going." I grab my beat up messenger bag and move as quickly as I can out the screen door. It bangs shut behind me as I break into a run so I can make it to school on time. When I get to school, I duck my head and try to ignore the stares. It's a month into the school year, and now everyone's seeing this random, ugly girl with a shitty outfit walking around. Trying my best to make my way through the halls unnoticed, I avoid eye contact and walk into the office. A plump woman with black hair pulled into a knot on top of her head stares at me with bird like eyes, taking in my appearance.

I shift uncomfortably as her beady eyes rake over my over sized sweatshirt, ripped skinny jeans covered with paint and words, and my purple converse that have definitely seen better days. I let my mousy brown hair fall into my face when L begin to talk. "Hello, I'm Amity Roth. I came here to get my schedule." I say nervously. The woman nods and hands me a piece of paper.

Quickly, I turn and walk out of the office, heading to my first period- AP English- and try not to have a panic attack in the middle of the crowded hallway.
