Description

Image

Name: Matthew "Matt" Bernard

Age: 15 (Younger than Marceline)

Description: Matthew is tall, thin, and lanky, for the most part, standing at 5'8". The most ā€œmuscleā€ he can brag about is his barely developed chest. Overall his body boasts the streamlined effect, rather than the macho man one. But Matt doesnā€™t much care, since, muscular or not, he could still kick the ass of a man twice his height and size. Heā€™s got a square, slim, but angled face, a strange combination in written words, but one that makes sense when you see his it. His eyes are a dark brown, while his ruffled hair is a nice shade of dark blonde. What really stands out is his eyebrows, as funny as that sounds. For a guy whoā€™s never had his eyebrows plucked theyā€™re quite shapely.

Wing Color: White with soft spots of sliver blotching them here and there.

Powers: 1) Mimicry. Matthew can imitate any sound he hears, including the voices of other people, making him quite the comic. Heā€™s used this trickery many times to cause trouble within the Ward.

2) Extreme night vision. Mattā€™s blind in his left eye. Or so it seems. Matthewā€™s left eye has a strange condition. For his left eye, day is like night, and night is like day. He needs no light for his left eye to be able to see at night, and yet, the eye cannot tolerate light, and simply ā€œblindsā€ out. This means, that unless he shades the eye with his hand, or some other obstruction, he has almost no vision with it in lit areas. This leaves him half blind at almost all times.

Personality: Mattā€™s an amiable, optimistic, fun-loving, open, trouble maker, with a bit of a sarcastic side. Heā€™s masked his he real feelings with mischief, fun, and optimism. This is all a result of the deep want to protect his only known relative; his sister. Marceline is Mattā€™s only family, and heā€™s desperate to keep her safe and do a good job at being a brother. And if this means fooling around just to get her to laugh, then heā€™ll do it. He feels like he needs to compensate for the fact that his sister had done such a great job at taking care of him, even on the verge of hopelessness. Now that the both of them have escaped, Matt is determined to make a normal life for him and his sister. His joker attitude does often get him in trouble, and heā€™s not afraid to use sarcasm. As biting as he may sound at times, heā€™s really a good kid at heart. He can be a bit of a perverted joker at times, but tends to take is easier around the younger kids.

Bio: Matthewā€™s lived at the Ward for most of his life. Two different Wards that is. The original Ward he was held in had been in New York, where he and his sister had been presumably born. At age thirteen both were transferred to Arizona, where they've been living a way too hot for comfort life. Heā€™s not sure what the deal with his parents were, but heā€™s aware of the fact that all he can remember of his life is the Ward, and does not waste time on making up silly fairytales about having a different life, or parents who cared. For all he knows, his parents might have been dirt poor, and sold him and his sister for money. Or maybe they could have been normal, and Matt and Marcy were stolen from them. Or maybe they were stinkinā€™, filthy, rich, and sold them for more money. Who know? All Matt cares to understand is that heā€™s been living with his sister for most of his life, and that heā€™s gone through countless amounts of torture, pain, and devastation all because of the Ward.

So begins...

"Eins, we have to get moving," I snapped, in no mood to coddle her. Yeah, something was definitely wrong with her arm, but now was so not the time to worry about it. She wasn't dead, she wasn't bleeding, and she could walk. That was good enough for me. The sympathy would have to wait until we weren't about to be killed or captured by the Ward.

"We need to go back to Marceline," I said, really having no idea whether that was true or not. Was now a good time or bad time to be separated? I'm just not good at these decisions in the heat of the moment. I checked to make sure she was following and I headed back through the semi-crowded hall, shoving people out of the way and occasionally throwing a punch if someone tried to stop me. The hall seemed to clear in front of me and I soon found out why.

A nurse was holding a gun on a boy who looked remarkably like Marceline, and who I just instantly assumed was related to her. Marceline herself was a short distance away and seemed to be hurt. The sight filled me with as much panicky fear and anger as the the sight of the gun did.

Martial arts is kind of useless when a gun is in your face. You don't need to touch someone to hurt them with a gun. In the movies I'd watched, the hero used special martial arts to dodge bullets. The Ward had used guns on mutants with even greater abilities and had never failed to kill them.

As if to prove me right, the nurse pulled the trigger. The sound was deafening in the hall and I flinched, expecting to see blood gushing everywhere or to feel the unexpected pain of a bullet wound myself.

But since Marceline's brother was still in one piece and no one else (including me) was lying on the floor in a pool of blood, she must have missed. He had to have been lucky to avoid that at such close range.

I was wondering what I could do to take her down when another kid -probably a mutant- began to sneak up on her. I stared... I couldn't help it. Easy way to ruin someone's ambush, by staring at them while they sneak up on someone. Luckily my reaction didn't seem to ruin it; he sailed through the air and tackled the woman hard. I couldn't help but be impressed as he slammed her head into the ground repeatedly. I was even more impressed when she kept fighting. Vicious.

He climbed off of her when she stopped moving and apologized for taking so long.

"No problem. Not like we're facing a life or death situation or anything," I said sarcastically, but I half smirked at him to show that I didn't mean it. "Can we leave now?"

A couple of the nurses I'd taken down were closing in on us again, though now they were being slow about it, as if approaching dangerous wild animals. Which I guess is a good description. Oh, and they were pulling out guns too. Copy cats. My smirk disappeared in an instant and I tensed up again. I so did not want to get shot today.

"Now what?" I asked seriously, all traces of sarcasm gone. Not like we could rush them and they definitely weren't close enough for me to do anything. I was useless.
