"Guns; how... inelegant..."

a character in “Blood & Sand”, as played by wavefury

Description

Height: 6'00"
Weight: 150 lbs
Hair: Black
Eyes: Green
Complexion: pale
Apparent age: 21
Chronological age: around 300

Icarus is relatively tall, and thin to a degree that seems rather malnourished. While his skin is perfectly smooth from a lack of aging and his natural healing ability covering the scars and imperfections life in the desert would cause most men; His eyes seem cold and distant, despite the constant smile he tends to wear across his face. One looking into those bright orbs would get a sense of all that they've seen, centuries of blood and war, raging across the entire world; madness, hatred, love, kindness, and everything in between. They show a sense of wisdom that would be unnatural for someone who seems so young.

Personality

Like many that are forced to live for eternity, Icarus has fought several bouts of madness and depression that have threatened to consume his mind. To protect his sanity, his mind is separated into two distinct personalities; one kind and innocent in every since of the word, the other vicious, bloodthirsty, and a hunter of men, through and through. Unless provoked, he usually won't attack a human, hunter or otherwise, unless they directly threaten his life or well-being. Unless his true nature is revealed, he will not kill anyone, save for a very select few who live their lives in wickedness and evil. If drawn into a fight, he will resort to guns and swordplay, even though he could easily pull a human's head from it's shoulders with his bare hands. Showing such feats of strength would reveal his true nature, as well as the existence of his kind, which he believes would be better left hidden from the eyes of mortals, lest the hunt down every last one of his kind.

Having been raised in the waning era of knights and chivalry, he prefers fighting with swords, finding guns "unsportsmanlike," not to mention useless, should he need to fight another vampire, which has happened frequently in his lifetime. Though he would prefer a typical dual-edged short sword and shield for fighting, he carries an army captain's sword to better fit in with his american surroundings, calling it "a relic from an old friend" when questioned on the piece. The blade, despite a lack of use, is incredibly sharp, and obviously well taken care of, showing an almost tender care shown towards preserving the blade. Although his blade is deadly, he does his best not to use it, since blood lust is so easy to succumb to during a fight.

Religion: Icarus is Pantheistic, meaning he takes what he finds useful from every religion he can find, and throws out the useless bits. citing an ancient Chinese proverb; "A man who casts his net in many ponds will catch more fish" As a result, he knows much about christian, hebrew and Muslim culture, as well as a few basics in pagan rituals and Wiccan lore. Since he learns from many people, worshiping many gods, he refuses to directly worship any of them, while showing as much respect as he can to those who do.

Political views: Fuck you and your government.

Equipment

Typically wears a duster coat over a suit and vest. A gunbelt hangs from his hip, with a Colt single action army revolver on one side (.45 caliber), and his Civil war officer's sword on the other. He also carries a satchel with a diary (containing a hand-drawn map of the local territories on the back few pages), fountain pen, Ink, bullets, whet stone and clothe for his blade, and a spyglass.

History

Icarus was born in a small town north of London, England, and born again in Wales, now with a sharp pair of front teeth and a taste for the red stuff. Growing up, he was brash and headstrong, and dying didn't do much to change that. Once he found out he could regrow limbs and survive things that would kill most people, he joined any army he could find, fighting in almost any war, as long as one side seemed to be worth helping.

By the time "the new world" was discovered, he had seen enough of Europe to last him a lifetime or two, so he hopped on the first boat he could find (quite difficult, since he had to find a crew that not only knew about his blood thirst, but also accepted it) and sailed off to america in search of adventure and excitement. What hadn't occured to him, was just how savage the land was, compared to his quite life in england, where everything was settled and known. Here, no one knew the terrain, the wildlife, and the locals weren't very trusting, especially once they found some of their people with bite marks in them. In the subsequent wars and struggles to claim the new land, the bright and cheerful blood drinker became wary of life, tired and bitter over the harsh nature of man.

For decades, he slipped into a sort of madness all his own, where he did barely anything but survive and kill. Until one day, he came across a young Cherokee woman, caring for a newborn, running from the white devils that had slain her tribe and stolen their home. Enough of his former intelligence remained that her frantic begging for mercy, coupled with her child's screaming, shook him from his hazy existence, and brought him back to sanity, though unstable as it was..

Since he had accidentally revealed his true nature to this woman, he couldn't let her go alive, lest she tell anyone, and he didn't have the heart to kill a baby, or leave one without it's mother. And so, he made an agreement with the woman, that if she would protect him during the day and keep him hidden from other mortals, then he would keep her safe from these "white demons" which had destroyed her life. The two became friends, for lack of anyone else. He gave her and her son a wealth of knowledge in the form of stories, told about his life, and the events which led to his madness; and in return, they gave him the will to live, and a name more fitting one of their tribe "blood hawk", which reflected the vampire's nature better than any name he could imagine.

Eventually, the woman grew old and died, refusing to be turned when he offered, seeing the madness that eternal life had bestowed upon her companion when they had met. Her son, having been raised like a son to Icarus, was trusted to keep his secret as the boy became a man and left to find a wife and a family. Admiring the boy's simple ambitions, and lust for life; despite hearing of the despair and loneliness his father figure had warned him about; Icarus set off on his own once more, determined to find a reason to love the world as his god son had.

And so, as humanity traveled west across the hemisphere, Icarus followed, eager to learn and explore life, despite the harsh realities that faced him on a near daily basis.

So begins...
