"If you think i'm going to comply you're wrong"

a character in “Captive in a Chemical Garden”, originally authored by KiraArsenic, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Name:
Shelby Peters
Image
Age:
16
Face Claim:
Emma Roberts
Likes:
• Cooking “Because nothing says “yes master” like a well cooked steak”
• Reading “Why not get lost in another world?”
• Fresh air “Considering I haven’t had any since I was 14”
• Exercising “Keeps my mind AND body busy”
• Rain “If only I could feel it again”
• Children “but don’t tell anyone”
Dislikes:
• Being forced into marrying “Surprised? Not everyone loves the married life.”
• Being alone except for the most part “except when my “husband” visits me for reproduction purposes. Oh yeah. I feel cherished.”
• Feeling stuck or trapped “like being held captive in a floor of a house? Yeah.”
• Having her clothing chosen for her “What I’m not big enough to choose what I wear?”
Image
Fears:
• Needles “Don’t get anywhere near me with those”
• Taking Medication “I’m not drugging myself with ANYTHING”
• Her sister dying “I don’t feel like talking about it…”
• The idea of pregnancy “I may like children but I’m not looking forward to producing one”
Appearance:
Shelby has honey blonde hair and grey-green eyes. She stands at about 5’5” and is quite fit for her age because she spends most of her ‘alone time’ exercising. If she got to choose her clothing, her style would look like this:
Example
Shelby pierced her own ears 3 times. So she has 6 piercings on her ears total, though she had to remove 4 of them when she was given to the governor. It wasn’t “proper” for a wife to look so “trashy”.
Personality:
Shelby is very headstrong. She refuses to be ordered around like a small child, but responds well to kind requests. She HATES the idea of being forced to be a wife to make more children, and resists the idea with all that she is. If she doesn’t like something she isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and she prides herself on that part of personality. Even though Shelby comes off extremely independent she actually becomes quite depressed when she’s left alone for a long period of time. She thrives on human interaction, and she will do what she has to for attention if she feels lonely. Shelby CAN be a very kind person but she has to feel close to and trust that person before she will show them any kind of warmth. Thus far in her life, her sister is the only one she had ever shown warmth and kindness to.
Shelby is a fighter. She will defend what she believes in even if she knows it could result in a beating (sometimes she will defend her point just to make someone angry if she doesn’t like them).
History:
Shelby’s mother had her when she was 20, and her father was ecstatic to be having a little girl. Then when Shelby was 6 her mother became pregnant again, but lost the baby at 7 months along. Her mother went into a serious depression, quit her job, and slept all day. Shelby’s father didn’t know what to do or say to help his wife. About 2 years later her mother was pregnant again and Cassidy was born. The family was happy again for awhile but when Cassidy was 2 they found out that she had a fatal form of Leukemia. This time Shelby’s mother dove into a depression, and a few months later she killed herself. Their father went mad with grief and abused Shelby verbally, physically, and sexually. She was 9 at the time. The abuse went on for 5 more years, and Shelby’s personality turned from sweet little girl to seemingly cold and heartless. But Shelby started learning how to deflect the abuse, keep herself out of the house when her father was home, or busy herself taking care of Cassidy. She knew Cassidy was safe because all her father wanted to do was help her. He worked 2 jobs and long hours to pay for her medical bills, but Cassidy started taking a turn for the worse. Her father arranged for Shelby’s kidnapping in exchange for some money for Cassidy’s medical expenses. So, in the middle of the night 2 men came to the house paid of her father and stormed her room. They bound and gagged her and threw her into a van. Shelby was unsure of what was happening but she knew the rumors. Girls being sold to men in high status for reproduction purposes. She readied herself for what she’d see when the van doors opened again.

Shelby Peters

They came in the night, the men in black, and stole her away. She was to be married off the next day to a man she hadn't met, and she was expected to bear children with this man. The thought disgusted her, but the more she fought, the tighter her chains became. The men in the back of the van laughed at her when she struggled against them. "No use fighting darling. You've been bought and paid for and the governor's father is not just going to let his merchandise run free" the man said harshly. Shelby sat up and spat in the man's face. Before he realized what he was doing, he hit her on the side of the head with his gun. The man Shelby could only assume was his boss smacked him in the back of the head "We're not supposed to damage the goods. What's the governor going to think when he sees that you left a hefty bruise on her face?" The man dropped his head like a small child being scolded and mumbled an apology. "Sorry won't make the purple blotch on her head disappear. You'll have to take this up with the governor" the other man replied.

They drove through the night and into the early morning before they finally came to a stop. "Alright princess we're here at your new humble abode. Now, be a good girl and do as we say and you'll get to meet your prince charming" both men laughed in unison. They dragged her out of the van and onto the ground. Shelby kicked and screamed and swore at the men. "My dear little one. You've got quite the mouth on you don't you? We could always send you back to your father, get our money back, and you can watch as your little sister dies because of lack of medical attention" the man spat heartlessly. Shelby's eyes widened and she stopped fighting. The men laughed again and muttered "Thats what I thought"

They quite literally dragged her to the house and threw her into a room. "Normally you're just supposed to have a Domestic but we decided to call in back up, so don't try anything." Shelby looked around to see that there was a domestic and what looked like 2 ladies in waiting. Both women looked stern. She glared at them and they glared back. One woman made an advance and picked the girl up off the ground. "what the hell did you do to her head?" she demanded, but instead of answering, her captors left the room with a chuckle and Shelby heard the 'click' of the lock. Shelby immediately went for the door and jiggled the knob, when it didn't open she pounded on the door roughly and screamed. "FUCK YOU! I'm NOT marrying this pervert!" she yelled at the top of her lungs. One of the women in the room slapped her across the face and almost growled: "Don't you DARE talk about master Decker that way, and you WILL marry him. The ceremony is in a few hours and we need to get you ready, so you either come willingly or we'll force you into everything."

Shelby tried a few more futile attempts at escaping before she collapsed into the make-up chair. "Follow me" said one of the ladies in waiting. Shelby got up and walked followed as asked. They entered a dressing room and the woman told her to strip. At first Shelby thought she was joking but when she saw that she wasn't Shelby refused. "Hell no." she stated. The woman rolled her eyes and said: "fine have it your way" two men entered the room and Shelby became wide eyed. "Okay! Okay! Fine! I'll change, just make them leave" she said quickly. The men chuckled but the lady in waiting shooed them out of the room. Once Shelby was finished undressing the woman handed her white undergarments. Again Shelby's eyes grew wide. "Its your wedding night dear. You're required to wear them, so don't make me call the guys back in here" Shelby nodded quickly and changed into the undergarments. The woman also handed her a dress and Shelby immediately put that on as well. "Now, my sister and I are going to leave you to your domestic. Be nice. She's only doing her job." the woman scolded. Shelby nodded slowly and headed over to the make-up chair once again. The domestic sprayed something into her hair and brushed it out, then she sprayed what Shelby assumed was perfume into her hair. She was surprised to find that the domestic didn't do anything else with it.

They soon moved onto makeup. Her domestic gave her a slightly darker lip and light blush, but she made a point to accentuate Shelby's eyes with brown and gold. Finally she did her best to cover up her bruise but anyone who came in close contact with her would notice it. When everything was finished her domestic pushed a small button on the wall and the women came back in. "Alright you. We were told to tell you that if you don't go along with EVERYTHING going on today we WILL take your sister as compensation. That means: you are to behave like a lady, you are only to speak when spoken to and then when you DO respond you must speak with respect. DO NOT make direct eye contact with Mr. Delaney, do not ruin your dress, stand like a presentable woman, and keep a smile on your face. Other than that, if you think your words or actions would be disrespectful don't do or say them. I think you understand." Tears welled in Shelby's eyes for the first time since the entire incident started, not because she was scared, but because her sister's life was in danger.

A few minutes later Shelby was ushered out the doors and was made to walk down the aisle and stand next to the other brides. The two women from her room stood in the back and gestured for her to smile. Shelby forced a smile on her face and twisted her ring on her finger.

Shelby was escorted to the reception area, but the ladies made it look like they were just asking her about her new life in Mr. Delaney's mansion. Shelby's mind burned with furious thoughts she wanted to scream out in frustration. Once they got to the reception hall the ladies seemed to disappear but she knew she was being watched, she could feel it. A couple approached her almost immediately and started rambling on about how lucky she was and how beautiful she looked. Then finally they asked her a question "Are you excited to be married off to such a wonderful man?" The couple had a cheesy smile plastered on their face and Shelby wanted to scream "NO I'M NOT EXCITED TO BE MARRIED TO A PERVERT, AND I'M EVEN LESS EXCITED THAT HE HAS MY SISTER AS COMPENSATION IN THIS TWIST OF EVENTS." but she put on the best smile she could muster, which isn't saying much, and nodded. "Yeah, I mean of course" the couple looked at her oddly and after a few moments of awkward silence, they left.

Again, Shelby was met by another woman. Then another man, a child, another couple, an older gentlemen, and so on. They all seemed to be so excited for her, but they looked at her like they pitied her. Like Decker Delaney did her a favor by pulling her off the streets and giving her the 'life of luxury'. She looked around until she found Decker. He was talking to two of his other brides and Shelby rolled her eyes. 'Trying to win his favor.' she thought. 'Well i'm sure as hell not going to show him any favor'

Raven watched Decker walk away with a frown still playing at her lips, and - what was that she felt deep in her chest, disappointment? And even a little tinge of jealousy when she saw him speaking to his third wife...Just a second ago, she was cursing him for taking such a young bride. Not even an hour in this man's company and she was already having conflicting feelings about him. She guessed that jealousy made a little sense, though...She wanted a husband who loved her. Exclusively. And in the very short time she was alone with Decker just then, he had treated her how she would expect a husband to treat his wife...
With a soft sight, she looked away from the two, shoving the thoughts of Decker from her mind, and took her seat at the table. She held Decker's rose out in front of her, looking down at its deep, too-vibrant petals. It seemed fake in comparison to the raw beauty of the roses growing all around her in this garden...Fake like this marriage she was in now, in comparison to the free non-forced love she once had the possibility of experiencing...
That's it. Whenever she feels any kind of affection or jealousy directed towards Decker or any of her sister wives, she would think of this rose, and the possibilities Decker Delaney robbed her of.

Shelby saw that Decker parted from the two women and started walking in her direction. 'SHIT!' she thought 'What do I say?' she wasn't really nervous about talking to Decker but she didn't want to say the wrong thing and endanger her sister, but when he opened his mouth she knew it wasn't going to be a problem. He handed her a rose and she took it without saying a word. He continued on to say the he didn't want to force her into doing anything and to tell him if she felt pressured. Again a voice screamed in her head to tell him that she not only felt pressured, but that she had no choice but to feel pressured. 'He HAS to know that we didn't just come here willingly right?' she thought. It seemed like forever before she finally said "Uh...yeah. Thanks" the response was definitely half hearted and she knew he'd be able to tell but it was all she could muster. She couldn't force herself to fake her feelings, not fully anyway.

Shelby sat silently as Decker tried to rephrase his words, thinking that what he SAID offended her. It wasn't what he said. It was the entire situation. She was about to respond to him, when he told her to meet him at the table when she was ready. After he left, Shelby sat in silence for a few moments. Finally, she rose and walked into the gardens. She didn't care about ruining her makeup or tearing the dress, so she sat down near a rose bush and started humming her sister's favorite lullaby and gently examined the blossoming rose buds.

A few minutes later she heard two men talking a few feet away from her, but she could not see their faces. The rose bushes grew quite high and she was at a disadvantage sitting on the ground.
"Is it done?" a gruff voice asked. "Yeah. It's all taken care of. Not a single dime was spent on the brat." another voice answered. "Everything go smoothly? I don't want anyone poking their nose around." the gruff voice responded "Yeah. The old man put up a bit of a fight, but the sick girl was easy to take care of. Far too young to know what was going on in the first place. Shame. She would've made a nice bride if she wasn't sick."
Shelby's eyes widened. Were they talking about her father and sister? What did they mean by taken care of?
"Good. The girl doesn't know correct? We don't need anymore drama from her. She's acting civil because Edith told her that we'd kill her sister if she didn't." both men chuckled sadistically. "No. She doesn't know and I plan on keeping it that way."

Before she knew what she was doing, Shelby barreled through the rose bushes, earning herself multiple scrapes and a torn dress. Her fist met the face of one of the men, but she was stunned for a moment by the look of the other man. He was covered in spatters of blood. She realized why he looked the way he did, and Just as she was about to strike again one of the men grabbed her around the waist and twisted her arms behind her back. Shelby heard a sickening 'pop' and searing pain shot through her shoulder, but she refused to give them the satisfaction of crying out. "Bitch" the blood spattered man mumbled under his breath. The other man was about to strike again but he was stopped. "A dislocated shoulder can be explained away, but if she goes back to the party bruised and broken you'll have to be the one to explain that to the governor."

As the men were discussing what to do with her, she wriggled free of their grasp and ran. She didn't stop or look back she just ran. The garden seemed to stretch on forever and she didn't stop again until she couldn't hear them behind her anymore. When she turned around she almost fell over a girl sitting on the ground. She was holding a photo to her chest. Shelby was about to yell when she recognized the woman as one of her sister wives. She also noticed Decker coming, and froze.

"Isabella. You don't have to stay here. I apologize for—for everything. I was a fool and far too optimistic to think you all chose me. Please, If that is not enough, Strike me. Take all of your anger out on me. I deserve it." He said.

Ah-ha, not a prank! And it did very little to comfort her. Still, what's the deal with this entire set-up? All these girls appeared strangely calm, somehow were ok with marrying a dude they didn't even know. And he hadn't realized it all until she said something? Shocker.

So, she was actually free to go? Really?

Somehow, with all the effort put into all this, she highly doubted she'd be able to simply drop everything and walk out. Not with how specific the guys in the shadows had pulled the stunt. Isabella felt like the only sane person. Cause the other girls shared a mutual standing. They all wanted in with the prince. Or Governor. Whatever. Straightening she turned from the fountain and took one final sweep of the area. Everything was so decked out, over the top. Nearly picturesque, again reminding her of some old romance movie. Now this was a set up for some fantasy fairy tale. A dream for delusional girls who wanted the royal princess life. She just wasn't up for it.

Then she spotted the bruised up Shelby. What the hell happened to her? Where there other princes around? Or had there been a fight among the other girls? The chill of fear inched its way up her spine but she swallowed down the beginnings of an anxiety attack. It was too late and too soon to panic. She had to keep her cool. That was the only way she could get out of this if that was even an option anymore.

Shelby nodded slowly to Isabella so that nobody knew she was answering a question. She turned her attention back to Decker, and was enraged by the guards who had come into the clearing as well "TRYING TO ESCAPE?! I WAS TRYING TO FIND PEACE AND QUIET AND I STUMBLED UPON YOUR LITTLE CONVERSATION! I was forced to be quiet before, but now that you've taken away all that I love forever...I WILL NOT be silent. NOTHING you can say or do will ever keep me from voicing my opinion or tearing you to pieces." and she was quite serious. Everything she loved in the world was gone and she no longer cared what they said they'd do to her if she didn't behave herself. She lunged at the guard again and landed another blow to his right temple. Out of self-defense the man grabbed her swollen shoulder and she winced in pain. The guards look appalled that she pointed out their lie. "Which one of them, dislocated your shoulder?" she heard Decker say. "I'd say that's pretty obvious now, don't you think? The one covered in my family's blood would probably be your best bet now would't it?" she didn't care that he made the guards bow to her. She knew it was an act of kindness and pride but she refused to accept it.

She was in no mood for games. "I find it hard to believe, MR. DELANEY" she spat "That you had NO idea where we came from. I find it hard to believe that you didn't know that instead of paying off my father like they said they were going to, for my 7 year old sister's MEDICAL bills mind you, they killed them both and kept the money for themselves." the rage within her was stewing and she was nowhere near finished. "You sit here on top of mount pride and expect that everything around you is happening peacefully. GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS." she approached him slowly and jabbed her finger at his chest. "You should have ESPECIALLY known when Lacey came down the aisle today. She's FAR too young to be marrying ANYONE, and you accepted her as a bride anyway?! Do you realize how SICK that makes you?" The guards behind her were growling in anger as well, but they were mad that Shelby had the audacity to speak to Decker Delaney like that. Shelby whirled around and pointed her finger at them "YOU don't get to be mad at me for this. I should KILL you for taking all that I love, but that would make me no better than you, and I associate you with pond scum." The guard lunged at her again but Shelby was thinking this time. She buried her knee into his stomach and hit his back with her elbow sending him crashing to the ground. She grew up having to defend herself from her father, so she wasn't going down without a fight.

Out of all of them perhaps Shelby had it worse. She was beyond freaked. It made the tension spike up a notch and it was nearly impossible to keep her cool, yet she managed. Keep calm, deep breaths. Whatever happened there must be an explanation right? All this, was pulled by someone. They just had to find the culprit and arrest them. Logical enough, but then why did she feel like it was all silly thinking? Little by little her hope flickered out. Keep calm she told herself. Shelby was losing it with the guards, someone should stop her.

Then she looked to Decker, crap he's bleeding! "Hey, are you okay?" She stood there watching, her brain everywhere at once until she shook the nerve and reached for his arm, "Alright, just tilt your head and pinch the bridge of your nose." Spotting the little triangle hanky thing on his shoulder she plucked it out and held it to his nose, "Here use this, hold it there."

Shelby paused for a moment when Decker started responding. As he spoke her face twisted with grief, anger, and denial. "I have no reason to trust you. None what so ever, and I don't think you understand. They KILLED everyone I could go back to. They killed everyone I love so even if you set me free, I'd be alone in the world. YOUR men killed my everything." she said, with a slightly more calm demeanor. "It's too late for apologies now and it's too late to set us all free. The state sees us as married and with the world the way it is...they're not just gonna let you set us free. We were sent here to reproduce, and i'm sure there are ways to make sure that happens." the thought made her shudder, but she knew it was true. Now that the government saw them as married they wouldn't be able to go, not at least until they've all had at least one child.

Shelby was suddenly aware that Decker's nose was bleeding and she raised an eyebrow. 'I didn't hit him did I?' she thought. She didn't remember hitting him, but she couldn't understand why his nose was suddenly bloody. She tore off a piece of her dress and handed it to him "Your nose is bleeding" she said a little more gently. As much as she wanted to be mad at him, part of her believed him when he said he didn't know. "Whether we like it or not or whether you like it or not we're stuck here. We're stuck here until we give the world a newborn child.

Shelby

Shelby listened intently to what he was going to say next, but after he took the cloth he started to get shaky. His voice and demeanor suggested illness. Shelby raised an eyebrow and almost felt bad for the guy. Though when he said he wouldn't touch either of them she didn't believe him. It wasn't the nature of the world and she didn't expect him to be any different. It was a backwards society and they were all going to have to deal with it. That's when he blacked out. Shelby's immediate instinct was to help him. Her sister had blacked out multiple times before so she felt her maternal instinct kick in. "Decker? Decker can you hear me?" she asked, kneeling next to him. She checked his pulse and then wiped his face with the cloth she handed him moments before. Blood was still coming out of his nose. She pulled his head up onto her lap and kept wiping his face. "Decker? If you can hear me, open your eyes. You blacked out." she said calmly. 'I can't believe i'm helping the man who ruined my life, my family, and my future.' she thought, rolling her eyes. 'He's someone that needs help, regardless of what he's done or hasn't done.' she thought. "Decker?" she called one last time.

Shelby heard him try and speak and she responded "Yeah, come on Decker. Just a few more words, tell me that you're okay" but his body suddenly went limp in her hands. She took his pulse again. It was still there but it was weak. She was about to turn and call for someone when she saw an older gentlemen running toward them. 'I see i'm not the only one they keep tabs on' she thought. The guards from before trudged along with Daniels with vicious smirks on their faces. 'Oh please' Shelby thought rolling her eyes. "Someone get the to the women's floor" she heard the man say.

Shelby backed away from the guards slowly. She wasn't going to make it easy for them, but the guards were prepared this time. With needle in hand they grabbed her swollen shoulder until she crumpled to the ground and then they pinned her down and injected her with a sedative. Once Shelby was out the guard flung her over his shoulder lazily and carried her up to her floor. He threw her on her bed and then stared at her for a moment. He ran his fingers across her stomach softly and smirked. The thoughts running through his head were obvious on his face. Shelby was half conscious but she knew what was going on and screamed as loud as she could and kicked him in the face as hard as she could before he could truly touch her inappropriately.

Shelby was half conscious throughout the whole ordeal, and only heard bits and pieces of what was being said.
The punching sounded so much louder and Shelby wondered who was trying to defend her. She assumed Decker was still passed out. "Be glad.....fists are bleeding.....explain this?" the voices around her came in and out as she came into consciousness. Then she started hearing things clearly "You'll figure something out. You're good with lies....No guards on the women's floor."

Pain shot through Shelby's shoulder, as she hadn't had a moment to pop her shoulder back into place. She groaned and clutched her shoulder. She rolled slightly on the bed and gasped at the sight of Decker. His clothes looked tattered, he had blood streaked in his hair, and blood down his clothes. Was all that blood his? She inspected him a little more closely to see that he had something lodged in his knuckle. Then something occurred to her. "Did you finally decide that your guards are totally useless?" she asked coldly, noticing the guard that brought her to her room was gone. She knew Decker was hurt; part of her didn't care and part of her (the part that used to take care of her sister) wanted to fix his wounds.

Her breathing was shallow as she spoke but the drugs had almost completely worn off. Decker seemed to be lost in thought and her facial expression softened. A man who was lying wouldn't look so guilty or so hurt. She sat up clutching her shoulder and took his hands. She wasn't going to ask permission. She inspected them carefully and tore off another piece of the silk organza that lined her dress. Emotionlessly she pulled the tooth from his hand wrapped both his hands in the torn fabric. "You should let someone look at your hands. You may have broken a couple knuckles" there was no sympathy in her voice.

Valentina made her way over to the table where her sister brides were sitting, a small smile on her face, still carrying the rose and her glass of champagne. She had to admit, she missed her life back home, but...she was looking forward to meeting the other girls she would be living with from now on. As long as they were pleasant, that is.
When she reached the table, Valentina gave a warm smile to each of her sister wives in turn, first Lacey, then Shelby, and finally, Raven. Her eyes lingered on Raven for a small moment, and she hesitated...before pulling a chair out and taking her seat across the table from her. This was the one. She knew that from that moment. This was the sister wife she would bond with most...she could sense it. She seemed so shy, so quiet...
So refreshing.

Raven lifted her head for a moment when the chair across from her was pulled back, and noticed that it was another of her sister wives occupying it. She gave her a small, nervous smile - barely meeting her eyes - before dropping her gaze again. The first wife she'd spoken to - Lacey - had seemed friendly, though she still wasn't a hundred percent sure of her motives, but she had no idea what to expect from this other bride. She looked so comfortable in this situation, with all of the stares she was receiving, with these clothes they had given her (whereas Raven fidgeted uncomfortable in them every so often) and she was so much more beautiful and graceful than her...It was already clear that between Lacey's giggly confidence, this bride's grace and her third sister wife's hard-to-get attitude, she would be the wife to fade into the background. Maybe that was a good thing...It would mean Decker would expect less from her in the way of children...but she still felt that sting of sadness at being that unloved wife who sat alone in the manor while her husband was somewhere else with one of his other brides...
There. She felt it. That jealousy...She looked back down at her hands under the table, where she was still holding the rose. Fake. Just like this marriage. she repeated to herself in her head, as Decker gave his speech.

Raven's blush intensified and she quickly looked back down, still holding onto her smile.
"I doubt that..." she muttered softly, tucking a few blonde waves behind her ear and exposing the tiny diamond in its lobe. Her ears weren't pierced before she came here. The first generation attendants that had come to prepare her for the wedding had done it just before styling her hair. It hadn't hurt nearly as much as she expected it to, and only lasted a second for each ear. She hadn't understood why it was necessary, though...She knew the attendants wanted to make her look her best for her soon-to-be husband, but impaling her skin just to add extra jewellery didn't make sense to her.
When Decker spoke, her head lifted again to look at him, and when she heard his words, she quickly looked around at the other wives. What could I possibly tell him? she thought. There was nothing to tell apart from her life before this place...And nobody would want to hear about that.

Lacey smiled at her other sister wives. They all seemed nice, and she felt like she would get along with all of them. She was relieved she wouldn't have to spend her life with a bunch of mean women. She was younger than all of them, she noticed, and wondered why. She listened and smiled as Decker talked, and was very interested when Valentina said what she liked.

Shelby Peters

Shelby took the rose from Decker warily but she didn't say anything to him. She waited for him to leave and then breathed a sigh of relief. Part of he wanted to dart from the table she was sitting at but she knew better. She knew that somewhere around this party there were two women in high authority watching her every move. Her sister's life was at stake and she wasn't about to kill off her sister for a moment of selfishness. Finally Decker wanted all his brides to sit at the head table so Shelby made her way up to the table and sat down. She heard the conversations start up. Valentina already seemed to have made friends with Raven, and Decker was asking everyone their story and what they liked.

Telling him anything about herself seemed like an appalling idea. On the flip side, she didn't know what to say. She couldn't tell him the truth. The ladies in waiting made it a point to tell her to keep her personal life...well...personal. She had to figure out her life story, it had to be convincing, and she had to do it fast. Her likes wouldn't have to change, just her life story. She blocked out the other women and started piecing together a life story. When she was finished she gave herself a small nod and folded her hands nicely in her lap. She could see the women watching her from the back of the room. They were giving her a very stern look and she knew what it meant. 'Be civil. Be kind. DON'T tell him where you came from, he doesn't need to know about your poor trashy life, he has better things to do with his time.' she heard the woman's voice ring in her head.

Lacey smiled, and her cheeks blushed pink when he called her sweetheart. "Well I like smiling," she said with a giggle, "and I love to sing. I like being with people and talking with people. I like little kids, and I love animals. And I absolutely love flowers." She grinned at Decker and her sister wives.

Valentina watched Decker, Raven, Lacey and Shelby, a small smile on her face, just simply staying quiet and enjoying the conversation. Funnily enough, it felt like...
Like they were all some sort of family...
She guessed that, in some sense, they were...but, in that moment, things didn't seem so bad.
They'd probably get worse, but...right now, they were okay, and none of them seemed to hate her. Which was a good thing.

Shelby

Everyone seemed to be so enamored with the man, or at least happy in the moment. Shelby could not force herself to be happy. She could not force herself to like him, though for the life of her sister she'd try. "Reading, cooking, playing piano, children...namely my little sister, rain, listening to music, fresh air, and I like to stay fit." she said emotionlessly. She had no desire to add explanations to the things she liked. She knew if she did she'd probably say something inappropriate, and she sure as hell wasn't going to give him any crucial information to play off of. He was not going to win her favor easily, if at all.

Valentina looked at Shelby, her expression slightly confused. She knew this girl was trying to hide something, but she had absolutely no idea what.
Looking back at Decker, she huffed quietly. She wished she'd never made the comment about liking being called pretty. Now, he would think that was all she cared about.
Frankly, it was nothing compared to some of the other things that were important to her. And for yet another time that night, Valentina glanced over at Raven.
See, that was a girl who wanted affection. That was a girl who needed a man to cherish and respect her. To love her.
Looking back at Lacey, she saw a young girl who didn't want marriage, per say...just the ability to have fun and make friends. And Shelby...well...she suspected that Shelby just hated Decker's guts.
Not wanting to make a huge fuss over what Decker was completely overlooking, she would stay quiet. But she desperately hoped things would start looking up for the shy little thing sitting opposite her. And fast.

Shelby

Shelby didn't know what to say back. She sat in silence for a minute. She knew she had to respond somehow but when she opened her mouth, no sound came out. "You'll have to excuse me. I need to use the ladies room" she said, wiping her face and getting up from the table. All the men in the room stood when she did as an act of respect, and they all sat back down once she left the table. Shelby walked swiftly to the bathroom. Once inside she shut and locked the door. 'A moment to myself' she thought. She sighed and tears started pooling in her eyes, but she didn't let them spill over her eyelids. After about 10 minutes she pulled herself together and emerged once again. She sat back down at the table and the women in the back of the room glared at her. Shelby didn't say anything and hoped that Decker had already tried striking up a conversation with his other brides.

Raven looked back down with the smile still on her face when Decker had finished talking to her. When he mentioned taking her out to see his garden, she felt a small rush of excitement, but also nausea. The rose. The rose. Think of the rose. she repeated in her head, gently twisting the stem of it between her fingers. She probably knew it was all futile, though...Because whenever she didn't force herself to think back to that fake beauty, she became caught up in the romance; in the idea of being loved and cherished by this wealthy, good-looking, kind man...But it would never be love, would it? How could it be? He has three other brides, each more beautiful and confident than her. Granted, one of them was a child. But still...If he were to love any of them, really love, she would definitely not be his final choice. She doubted she'd even cross his mind.
She lifted her eyes occasionally to the other brides that were speaking, but she was too lost in her own mind to register most of what they were saying, but her head lifted entirely when Shelby left the table. Maybe she'd be the one he falls for...Men always seem to chase after the challenge, don't they? But she truly seemed to hate him, so if he did, that love would be unrequited.
No, the one he'd most likely be happy with is Valentina. She was beautiful beyond words, with poise and confidence. Any man would fall for her...And she doesn't have that level of hatred for Decker as Shelby has, so of course it'll be her.
With an inaudible sigh, Raven dropped her gaze back down to her lap.

((Okay, I'm back. Let's do this. :D ))

Decker sighed. He didn't understand why Shelby was so upset. Was this not her wedding day as well? This should be the happiest day of her life. He scratching the back of his head. He wouldn't go after her. If she wanted space. He wouldn't interrupt. He turned to the other girls. He noticed Raven looked down at her lap. What was wrong with her? He thought. What did he do wrong? He was kind, polite, gentle. Everything he thought a man should be to a wife. He didn't know what else to do. He looked over at her and touched her hand. " Is everything alright?" He asked thinking that the table right now was filled with unexpressed feelings. Like the women were hiding something. They almost look similar to what his Mothers did when his father was around. He didn't like that in the least. "Please if anything is wrong, let me know how to fix it...All of you." He pleaded with the girls.

Valentina looked at Raven and Decker, the smile on her face slowly returning, and slowly stood up.
"Well...I'm terribly sorry to disappoint you all, but...right now, I'm feeling a little under the weather...just slightly flushed. So...I think I'm just going to go freshen up in the ladies room, and then take a little walk around the garden to clear my head." She said softly, gently picking up the rose Decker had given her and holding it down at her side. Decker and Raven seemed to be having a little bit of a moment, and...she was in no mood to stick around and prevent it from happening. "Please, continue your conversations, and I shouldn't be too long."
The last part was a lie, but it was a lie told for a beneficial reason. So...it couldn't be particularly harmful.
