Personality |
While many perceive Ibuki Mioda as nothing but immature and upbeat, I find her to be one of the most emotionally mature characters in Danganronpa.
Ibuki is incredibly unique, and not simply because of the surface reasons such as her clothing choices and style. Once you choose a character to spend free-time events with post game, Hajime (the player character, of course he has his own personality and choices n stuff but still) typically helps the character he spends FTEs with work through trauma, come out of their shell, comfort them, etc.
During Ibuki's FTEs, she is attempting to help Hajime by teaching him a realization that is speculated that she learned after breaking away from her old band, the more light music group-type of one:
His talent really DOESN't matter, and he hasn't lost who he is. The person that wakes up every day, whether he knows anything about that person or not, is HIM. And regaining his memories or not, that doesn't change things.
Since Ibuki's FTEs and general story don't tell much about her backstory, much is left to speculation. However, the Light Music Club-type band she used to be in and then left due to "Musical differences" makes me further believe this about Ibuki: She will stay true to herself no matter what. While she may always be upbeat and super energetic and hyper, it isn't meaningless, or an act. That's who she is, same with her eccentric ways of dress and speaking. Ibuki Mioda has incredibly strong values that she will stand by, and she seeks genuine connection. She won't allow herself to waver in her beliefs. She is incredibly emotionally mature, realizing that not everyone will like her or her music, and yet.. she's okay with that. She genuinely lets herself be disliked, and is okay with others finding her abrasive.
So, even though she didn't have a lot of time to get her character fleshed out. Even though she's hyper and people dislike that, never seems to get sad, simply seeems to be comedic relief and nothing else. I love Ibuki Mioda because she reminds me to stay true to myself and the things I love to do; forming genuine connection with those who value your true personality is more valuable than forming shallow relationships with people who dont value you for you.
Ibuki reminds me to let myself proudly stand with who I am and be myself, even when faced with challenges and fear. She is probably my favorite character in Danganronpa, dare I say my favorite character entirely, for all these reasons.
