Character Name: Celeste Miria Cooper
Appearance:
Personality/Bio: Celeste is a no-nonsense type of gal. She’ll beat you senseless if the situation calls for it, but she also knows when to exercise caution and kindness. She dislikes children and childish people, although she has a soft spot for her own daughter, Lucille. She prefers to work in small groups rather than with a large cluster of people and other security personnel rather than ‘squint’-types. Celeste was the leader of the pack, even as a small child, and she always had a strong protective reflex, making security and law-enforcement jobs a natural progression for her. She tends to be bitter and cold when forced to talk about personal matters, but has the ability to open up in a relaxed situation. She has a wandering soul, preferring to shift her environment every few years instead of staying put in a secure, solid job where she could easily rise to through the ranks.
Celeste was born on Ganymede Orbital Station, a city-sized space station set in orbit around one of Jupiter’s largest moons, and raised as a normal child. Her father was a devout Unitologist and pediatrician while her mother was an atheist and a school teacher. She was an average student and frequently got into fights amongst the others her age. It wasn’t that she had trouble fitting in with the others—on the contrary, she was considered popular with many of the female students—she simply had trouble handling those who bullied others with grace. When she turned sixteen she enlisted in security pre-training courses, finding an outlet for her naturally protective nature. After graduating high school, she was trained in basic security functions, how to shoot, how to hit, how to interrogate, and so forth. Once she obtained her certification, she was bounced around from ship to ship for assignments, none of which lasted more than two years before she was transferred to another. She was easily promoted a few times, but each time she found a more solid, stable station, she felt the longing for a new environment and requested a transfer. She developed a close relationship with another security officer on the USG
Alria and with him, had a daughter. She took a year off work to return to Ganymede, but eventually left young Lucille with her mother and father to return to the stars. She chats with the six year old girl over video mail every chance she gets.
Four years ago, a man from the USG
Atlanta recruited Celeste in hopes that her high recommendations were true. He was pleased with the results. While she was among the least decorated of the crew, her ability shone through. She could have been a great hero if she had bothered to try, but she was always so disinterested in being recognized for her work, preferring to do her job and move on. After two years on the vessel she became bored, as she often did, and requested a transfer to another ship. This request was denied over and over again. While she wasn’t unhappy with the ship’s captain intending to keep her around, she longed for a new environment and new people she had yet to make an impression on. When the
Atlanta’s crew was selected to ‘rescue’ a handful of guards on the
Bloodstone, Celeste expressed no concern or disdain. It was something to do, somewhere different to be. Who cared if it was a simple run for some of the greatest soldiers at the disposal of humans?
