Mission Specialist aboard the Lewis and Clark. Geologist.
He's generally jovial, blunt and rather loud when expressing himself, often accompanied by a bellowing laugh. On the downside he can be too honest, has virtually no patience to deal with delicate matters and is often bound to step on someones toes. He has issues with authority when he thinks he has a better plan. As a result there are some small clashes with the commander. In the ends he means well and his big heart helps overcome these quarrels. He's also a little selfish leading him to break the rules inorder to help himself. Hence his hidden stash, the beer runs and pranks. He can be a little nerdy and obsessed with his profession, often a weakness that the other members of the crew prey on.

Geological Hammer: He wouldn't leave without it.
Drilling equipment: Aboard the Mars Rover, able to drill up to 200 meters.
Microscope: Intended for thin (rock) sections and other sciency stuff.
Silver Watch: An old silver clock on a chain, inherited from his father's family.
John's Stash: He secretly replaced a case of rock samples with a case of his own..
Personal History:
When John was 4 years old he was already obsessed with space; able to name every planet in the solar system. He had a close relationship with his father who frequently took him camping and hiking, inspiring John to become a geologist. After his father passed away at age 25, John travelled the world in search of something that could fill the void leading him to work in Kazakhstan, Qatar and Houston. He finally moved on with his life at NASA, until a strange dream of his father caused him to take the Mars Mission; something he may not have normally considered as 'A geologist should be on solid ground, not on some flying piece of junk'.
Professional History: He has an MSc in Structural Geology from the university of Boston with minors in Remote Sensing and Environmental Science. He completed his intern at NASA doing researching lunar fault patterns. Since then he has worked on an oil rig in the Caspian Sea before being recruited by NASA to continue analysis of satelite images. He has participated in NASA projects simulating full-spacesuit field operations in the Utah desert. However, he nearly lost this position when he went shopping for beer in a nearby supermarket wearing a spacesuit. Unfortunately for NASA his combined experience of remote sensing and core analysis makes him invaluable for the mission so he was merely reprimanded.
