❊|Personality|❊
Positive Traits || Scholarly. Highly devoted to the pursuit and preservation of knowledge. Elaris will go out of his way to hunt down ancient tomes or inscriptions hidden on the walls of long empty ruins, every last piece of information is as another piece of a long hidden jigsaw in his mind.
Inquisitive. Always ready and eager to learn, it is this thirst for new learning that constantly drives him to adventure and excitement, rather than to sift through a library.
Dreamer. Though perhaps not always of positive dreams, Elaris is always looking to the future. In an ideal world he would find the last remaining parts of Elvish culture that were needed to form a third great Elven Kingdom, and return the world to the way it was before the rise of the foul Tevinter.
Negative Traits ||Racist. Something unusual in the larger population of Elves, yet is very prominent with Elaris. Though he does not see Elves as the master race as most others view their own people, rather he views all other races as uncultured and inferior, mostly for their failings at the grasps of magic and religion. He is particularly venomous towards humanity for a varying number of reasons.
Cryptic. Being called on to read and translate the many different texts the Chassuer de tresor uncover has led Elaris to speak in riddles and cryptic hints. This is made doubly worse when deciphering ancient Elvish scripts, which are also written in hints and clues as apposed to the direct story telling of human text.
Distant. Though not going so far as to cut everyone off, Elaris prefers to spend his time in study. Be that in the physical world of in the Fade. This deliberate isolation has done great things in terms of his strength in magic and learning, yet done little to aid his social skills.
Likes || Elves. Learning. Spirits. Magic. History
Dislikes || Other races. Non-Elven religions. Stupidity.
Fears || The Chantry
Strengths || Linguist. Possessing a remarkable skill at learning written language and translating it, Elaris has become the brains behind the group. He is able to read and translate almost all forms of Elvish, the three major languages of human; namely Orlaisian, Ferelden and Tevinter as well as possessing a fairly functional knowledge of most Dwarvish scripts. Currently he is attempting to learn Qunari, with some mild success.
Magic. Though hardly the strongest mage to ever live, Elaris is still a powerful mage. Though it should be noted that he has focused his power towards the offensive nature. His main lines of magical focus are towards Fire and Lightning magic.
Weaknesses || Social skills. Through a lack of caring and energies diverted elsewhere, Elaris has allowed his ability to care for others to simply degrade. Though hardly a horrible man, acts of compassion or caring words are rarely found, if ever expressed.
Physical fortitude. Though not a stranger to violence or the struggles of travelling the wilds apart from society. His body takes major objection when that violence is thrust directly upon him, the path of the mage is one that often results in the body degrading at the expense of the growth of the mind.
❊|History|❊
Dalish born, and destined for a simple life as a proud nomad. But all that was to change once Elaris began to develop his powers in the art of the world of magic and reaching across the Veil. It sent ripples in the clan, each of the Dalish feared what would come, for the Keeper already had an apprentice, and she could not take up a second. Normally, this issue could be resolved by simply giving the fledgling mage away to another clan, but they were deep in the heart of Orlais, with no other clans around. The Dalish pride would not give up the young Elaris to the hated Chantry of Man. And so instead they opted for what seemed to them the better option, they exiled the boy at the age of just six.
Cast into the wild, with only a haft of wood for a staff and barely a weeks supply of food on his back, Elaris wondered the land aimlessly. Out of spite for the ones who so carelessly threw him aside, he abandoned the name of his clan and turned his back on his people as they had on him. His fate was changed once more when a passing chevalier discovered him whilst out hunting. This man was Ser Michel De Chavel, former squire of one Ser Issac Nuevelle. Rather forcefully he snatched up the frail Elf boy and dragged him halfway through Orlais, to be presented as a gift to the retired chevalier, to be used as a servant around the boarding school. Elaris had no choice in the matter and was quickly put to work.
The young Elf was forced to endure a mixture of slavedom to the retired chevalier, and constant harassment from the human children of the boarding house. There were only two saving graces in those dark days. Whilst Ser Issac did nothing to stop the punishment that Elaris was forced to endure, he did allow the young Elf entrance to the boarding houses library, where he would often be found when he felt he could slip away. The second of these was the unexpected and rather forced friendship by one of the orphan girls, one Artemis, though he could never figure out why exactly she had decided to force herself upon him and frankly he mistrusted the entire thing.
As the years dragged by he learned much about the history of Orlais, and worryingly little about the history of the Elves. Though once he had been ready to all but turn his back on the world of the Dalish, his persecution by the human children drove him further and further into the world of the past. In secret he developed his gift in magic, behind locked doors and in secret groves in the woods. Far away from prying eyes, for he knew what would happen should anyone discover what he was. Apostate. The very word felt unnatural in his mouth, a word to label all mages who would live free from the hatred of the Chantry. Though he taught himself in utmost secrecy, he had no doubt Artemis knew of his talent, yet she did not tell anyone. The girls erratic nature confused him slightly, yet against his better judgement he begrudgingly grew to allow her her strangeness. Even if it did once cause him to damage Ser Issacs silverware when the girl barreled into him, all battered and bruised.
His fortunes changed for the better when an old storyteller came to visit the boarding home. Remarkably the man had allowed the Elf to actually listen into the stories that he had to share, it was perhaps Elaris' presence that made him tell of an ancient Elvish artifact, hidden away in a sealed ruin. He made his mind up that very night, and slipped away in the dark of midnight, though unsurprisingly Artemis had managed to come after him. It seemed to him that he was going to have to simply endure her on his search for history. Even though he would never admit it, she was the most tolerable of all of humankind that he had ever encountered. Their mission was a major success as far he was concerned, Artemis managed to defeat the guardian and he recovered the artifact, which turned out to be an ancient Dalish staff. He was rather proud to take up the legacy of his people, and to openly defy the order of the human Chantry.
Time went by with success after success. It quickly became clear that Elaris was the brains behind Chasseur de tresor. He led them from ruin to ruin as they pillaged their way through the ancient history of the Elves and other races. Each place had secret clues that led to their next discovery and he was always elated to learn more of the hidden past of the Elves that was etched into the walls. Even though the group has grown and their journeys have taken them far and wide, Elaris continues to struggle to understand other people, it doesn't help he is mistrustful of any non-Elf as it is.
I looked for ages, but I just couldn't find any male Elves. Apparently they aren't very popular.
