The best single word to describe him would be stoic. Sev is taciturn and grave, rarely speaking or showing amusement. Battle-hardened as he is, very little unnerves him or makes him nervous at all. This is a man who once fought and killed a lion in the Colosseum, after all. Despite having seen the development of most of modern technology himself, he generally distrusts it almost to technophobic levels, and he uses only those devices he finds necessary or practical.
While one might expect such a man to be brash or crass, Sev is actually gentler than one might expect. While not a scholar, he has a particular gift for understanding people, and his education was in many areas. These traits are well-buried beneath the mask of cool indifference, however, and it takes special occasion to reveal them. As for women, well, he is entirely clueless. Sev only ever fell in love once, and that was from a distance. Love and affection are perhaps the two emotions he understands least well, and his penchant for observation fails him completely in these areas.
Strongly motivated by internal senses of honor and justice, Sev considers it a personal duty to never hurt anyone if he can avoid it.
Severus Corvis was born to a family of artisans, painters particularly, in Rome, circa 6 A.D. He might have been little more than a successor to his father, since he displayed some talent for painting, but his real skill was in the war games he played with other boys. A Senator who frequently walked past the area they used for play was quick to pick up on this, and offered to adopt Severus, that he might have a proper education. His parents agreed, seeing the opportunity this would provide for their son, and he was made a son of the Senator, Caius. Under the tutelage of some of Rome's greatest military minds, he made great progress, and was eventually made a captain in the army.
He was part of the invasion that toppled Cleopatra and Marc Antony and established the Romans as lords of Egypt. During this time, Severus fell in love with one of Cleopatra's attendants, though he never spoke of it to anyone, least of all the girl herself, believing that it might be contrary to his honor as a soldier. The decision tore at him, and he was contemplating telling her anyway, just to see what might come of it, when fate intervened. The girl was caught trying to poison one of Sev's superior officers, and executed on the spot as Severus watched, paralyzed with the inability to choose between his honor and his heart.
Upon arriving in the modern world, Sev chose to integrate himself as best he could from the start, and ended up with a job as a bodyguard. He works primarily for the governor of New York.
