Travis has been told that regardless of the job he's doing, that his style is that of the working man. Jeans, jacket, and boots, along with all the other essentials mixed in. He prefers this because jeans are comfortable and always seem to be more durable that most other clothes, and jackets are good for many things including keeping you warm. As for outside of clothing, Travis does take pride in his hair, styling up every morning and even getting a little defensive whenever someone tries to touch it and keeps his facial hair a little longer than stubble but not much longer. Oh, and is also known for keeping a flask on him most of the time, filled with whiskey.

Travis is almost always seen wearing a smile around Greythorne and is know for keeping a happy and positive aura about himself. He also stands tall with a confidence and isn't often seen to be hunched over or shrugging, another one of many things that is part of him from the military. Along with his clothing of choice, he does have a few scars from over the years, a bullet wound in his right shoulder from his time in the Marines, and a few cuts on his hands from normal work over the years. From being a hunter though, he does have a few scars to show what he has done, the most noticeable one is a large claw mark from a lycan on his back.

You might think someone who hunts down monsters would be soulless and not care about another beings well being, but Travis isn't entirely heartless. From how he was raised to what he has seen on the field has shaped who he is, not his current job.

Travis can be described by people who know him outside of his job, as a hunter, as a old soul. With how he was brought up and his experiences in the military, has shaped how he acts and what his beliefs are. Someone who he respects he will show kindness and always have their back, someone he likes he will do anything for at a drop of a hat. But someone he doesn't like, someone he might hate; he will easily put on a face and pretend to be respectful as well as keep his cool, in part to his training, and pretend all is dandy until he leaves the room. Travis was raised to always give respect, even if you don't respect said person, and after being under certain officers in the military, he has shown that well. To Greythorne, Travis is a kind man, a human that will do just about anything for them, and has done such a thing to prove it. And this isn't completely fake of Travis, as he is a caring person, for people he thinks deserve his care. There are some monsters he gets along with, and might even call acquaintances and help them out, but he struggles every day in Greythorne in deciding between these beings and his own people.

The look he gives out is a very open and inviting demeanor. Whenever someone walks into his store, Travis will always be smiling and strike up conversation, showing he cares and wants to get to know everyone, and letting them know he is there for them. Travis didn't only do this because of his current assignment, his whole life he has been outgoing and willing to help others. No matter what the work he would be doing, Travis would have a smile on his face and try not to complain too much, or atleast not complain to people that would get upset about it. And that sort of company he doesn't keep himself around as much. The company he does try to keep sees Travis for who he is, a goofy old soul that will tell jokes as well as quick sarcastic remarks and stinging insults when needed.

There are some days when Trav gets tired of his personal dilemma and fighting his morals, he can be seen at the local bar trying to numb his thoughts. Most nights he will drink alone and when asked whats wrong will just tell him its personal and doesn't want to talk about it, but the occasional night he will have a good time with the so called "monsters." Which doesn't exactly help how he feels the next day.

H I S T O R Y
Travis had a pretty normal upbringing, for a military brat. His parents met when his father came back after a short deployment being in the Army and quickly fell in love and got married, and it wasn't long until Travis was born. After he was born, Travis' father decided that he cared more about family than he did his job and fighting and quickly requested retraining and ended up in a more administrative role so he could have easier hours and be home with his family. Growing up Travis was raised on military morals and values, along with being raised how to defend himself; whether that was hand to hand and martial arts, or learning how to shoot a pistol and a rifle. His childhood and teenage years weren't very fancy, or different than a normal child's.

When Travis turned 18, he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, but did so a little differently, joining the Marines as a low infantry. Starting out Travis struggled a bit to get his footing, but quickly rose and was top of his graduating class in boot camp and continue to excel in the field. He fought in many battles to try to live up to his fathers name and was rarely back in America due to constant conflicts overseas. It wasn't until he got pulled into his commander's tent and told of his parents death, a tragic card accident late at night, that he finally came back home, something he regretted not doing so sooner.

While at the funeral service two mysterious men in suits approached Travis asking him to come with him, but when they spoke about the real reason of his parents death, he quickly complied. Upon getting in their blacked out SUV and driving to a undisclosed location, he was told about what really happened to his parents. A group of "monsters" had chased them down and killed them. Travis had asked why they told him this and why they brought him to some facility in the middle of nowhere. They offered him two things, better employment than fighting for the government in deserts and jungles and revenge for his parents. While they couldn't promise him the same monsters that killed his parents, they did tell him their mission and how they wanted to save humankind from these evil supernatural beings. Travis quickly agreed and began a new life, not of a soldier, but as a hunter.

Throughout the years, he had hunted down numerous different supernaturals, all them always being evil or terrorizing some group. The hardest being a vampire lorde and his vamplings, but most interesting and fun being a fae that was using her powers to control and rule a town in rural Massachusetts. While working he always heard about the myth and tale of Greythorne, a so called collection of humans and monsters living together, something he never paid too much attention to as it sounded to far fetched. It wasn't until he came back from hunting down a lycan pack that he was brought into the big boss' office and told of his next assignment. Infiltrate Greythorne and report back information. For once it wasn't hunting, but it would be much harder than that. Travis had worked with some of these beings with powers in the past, a few of them turning on their own kind to hunt them for sport, but now to live beside them and earn their trust...

Travis arrived in Greythorne as a sympathizer for their kind and wanting to help, promising to bring business as he had connections outside of Greythorne and just wanting to live a peaceful life after fighting other men's wars. At first the town was hesitant, but after awhile he was able to earn their trust, even opening a small store in town. Using his military background as the reason for his knowledge and reason for his skill with human weapons. He would leave town every once awhile to refresh his goods, as well as report back to his employers to tell them any and all information he had gathered. Each time asking when there would be enough but them keep telling him to get more information. After awhile Trav started to enjoy the settled down life a bit, getting along with 90% of the town, even though most of them were monsters and some that could easily eat his heart. He even began to start having feelings toward a specific one, but always tried to keep the emotions buried unless he was trying to get information.

The day of the Harvest Festival was one that would plague Greythorne forever. It all started when smoke bomb went off covering the area, and while that was swept away by supernaturla powers, more and more went off. Travis did his job and started taking out some of the more fatal monsters, but not killing anyone as he actually knew some of them, they weren't suppose to kill anyone, just scare and intimidation. But as things started to kick off and he looked around, all he saw was a slaughter

After watching the horror of the Harvest Festival, Travis was livid with his employers, and made it known. They weren't suppose to go after families, and were suppose to use non-lethal to take them down. They quickly tried to calm him down saying that they didn't want to and tried using non-lethal, but it got out of hand, and they didn't mean to kill bystanders. Travis didn't like this answer and basically told them what they did made them such as bad as the monsters, maybe even worse. He also wasn't happy when he was told he had to go back to Greythorne it wasn't over, but was reminded that next time would be different and it wouldn't get so bad. He felt terrible about what had happened, and even began to report back less information or even misinformation sometimes. Travis wanted to get out, but he felt he was in too deep. He might even start feeling sympathy for these people who had supernatural abilities...

Travis had barely stood up before he was picked up by the neck by the tall werewolf by his neck. He wasn’t too surprised to be honest, he knew when he was contemplating how to deal with this loose end that they would upset with whatever his solution would have been, but he definitely didn’t expect to be met with this hostility. Especially with the context of why he shot and killed the man; yes to cover his own ass, but also to save Rosie. It was a decision he made on impulse, but he would make it again if he needed.

When Markus had him picked up, Trav had one of his hands behind his back reaching for his knife in case he needed to use it, but didn’t want it to resort to that. Fortunately for all parties involved Neden quickly calmed Markus down and ordered the werewolf to get some fresh air. Markus didn’t exactly put him down gently, most just letting go of his neck, Travis caught himself but landed most of his weight on his now sore leg. “Thanks…” He mumbled as Neden picked up the body and told him to head upstairs. He followed Rosie up but felt Neden’s presence behind him with the body, trying not to push too much weight on his leg.

"Best to burn the body, get rid of evidence of it being here specifically, though they already know he was captured and/or killed since he hadn’t reported in, probably just a disposable body to them now.” Travis said as he took a set and started rubbing his knee, and hearing Rosie’s remark. “To be fair, he caught me off guard. And I’m fine, just going to be a little sore, got it caught in the chair as I fell.” He said to Rosie. Travis knew that Neden and Markus don’t know the situation or what led up to the gunshots; that he was acting on the behalf of Rosie’s safety.

“Neden,” Travis started before taking a breath. “I’m sorry for how it went down, but I’m not sorry for killing him, for stopping him from doing anything else.” He said taking a glance over at Rosie on the couch. “There’s no undoing it. Now you can either throw me out and continue your prejudice against me or you can kill me where I am now and bury or burn me with him, but whichever you choose, I’d recommend at least listening to what information I was about to get about him and his fellow Branded Hunters.” Trav finished speaking, waiting to see what their decision to do, as well as thinking of what all he would tell him. Yesterday he was a spy and a hunter for the Branded, but today and from now on he is a double agent for them and the community of Greythorne...

Kay's bright "hi!" was an abrupt change in tone, and Phoenix turned to see Jaiden and Violet were back. Their presence was a welcome distraction. He'd told Kay the truth and... he could tell she didn't want to believe it. He didn't want to see her get hurt, but if she wasn't going to listen to him, there wasn't much else he could do. Not now, at least. He didn't want to continue with this conversation either. All of the guilt, the anger, the pain of the past few days was sitting in his chest like a physical weight.

He forced a smile as Violet asked Kay if she was coming with them. "Yeah, we're going back to mine, just to relax for a while. I've got brownies and we're probably going to make some hot chocolate and find something dumb on TV to watch. You want to come?" He asked. He liked Kay, he really did, but the thought that she might keep asking questions and talking about Alex wasn't exactly one he was totally okay with. But he wasn't going to just walk away and not say anything. And besides, she might cheer Jaiden and Violet up a little. That would be worth it.

"I also have that tea you love," he said with a raised eyebrow and a smile. "Come on, it'll be nice." Being in groups like this made the absence of Alex feel all the worse. He had always just been there. It had been said more than once about them that they practically came as a pair. Phoenix could handle being alone. It was when it felt like he should have been there that the hole was felt. But what could he do? He wasn't going to risk making things worse. As much as he wanted to, he knew he wasn't the right person right now. So he'd just have to... wait and hope. Just like he always did.

"Come on then, let's go. It's too cold to be standing around like this," he said, shoving his hands in his pockets and heading back towards his apartment.

Rosie just nodded as Neden said they were going to deal with the body. Rosie had learned that when it came to Neden, it was generally better not to ask too many questions. She didn't react, simply stared at her shoes as Trav asked them all to at least listen to him. And then Neden left, leaving the two of them alone for a few minutes.

"I'll tell them you did it to save me," she said quietly. "They'll... they'll respect that much. But I need you to tell me something, and I need you to tell me the truth," she said, sitting forward and holding his gaze. "Travis, how did he know I was a siren? He called me pretty little siren and knew to cover my mouth. I don't look like a siren from mythology."

But before Travis could answer, Markus came back in. He still looked deep in thought, and Rosie looked at Trav. Don't say anything. She got to her feet. "I think we could all do with tea, yes?" She said in her usual bright banner, brushing herself down and heading out to the kitchen. She pulled down a few mugs and put some water on to boil, leaning against the counter as she did so. Suddenly, things seemed much more dangerous. Things had felt... wrong since the first attack, but the feeling was worse than ever. Nothing like this had ever happened before. She knew that much. And she'd heard the stories, of towns like this that were destroyed and its surviving inhabitants forced to move and scattered across the world. She didn't want that to happen again. She wouldn't let it happen again, not if she could do anything to stop it.

Travis just ran his hand through his hair and tried to relax as Neden and Rosie talk and then watched as Neden left with the body talking about knowing what to do with the body. He was curious what she had planned but didn’t care enough to ask. Trav was surprised when Rosie whispered to him, telling him that she would tell the others that he shot the hunter to save Rosie. “I did shoot him to save you…” He mumbled, but Rosie continued, saying they would respect what she said, but then curious about what she would ask him about.

Rosie had asked how the other hunter knew she was a Siren. He mentally cursed to himself about it, but just rubbed his forehead thinking to himself. In Travis’ reports he would talk about the monsters and their descriptions, along with names and powers so they would be prepared, so of course the hunter would recognize the monsters from his reports. But before he could answer, Markus walked in and Rosie shot him a look, which he took as to not answer the question just yet. Luckily this would give him some time to think of an answer for Rosie.

“Sure, wouldn’t mind some right now.” Travis replied to Rosie’s question about tea. Usually he wouldn’t drink tea, but now was an exception, might help calm his nerves. Before Rosie could come back from the kitchen Neden walked in, without the body of the hunter, tempted to ask what she did with it but knew this wouldn’t be the time. “So… Let’s get this started and over with.” Travis said to the two others in the room, not exactly waiting for Rosie to come back in.

Travis leaned forward from the chair and looked between Neden and Markus. “You probably know this, but he was a scout for the Branded, he was just here to collect information and report back, not to engage, or so he says.” Trav said, curious about why they would send a scout when he was here. “They know roughly how many, as he said, monsters and humans there are here, though not sure if that’s before or after people left since the attack. Which makes me think he’s either been scouting for awhile or there’s more out in the woods.” Travis sighed, recalling other information he could share, and then realised there was something he could tell, which he was worried about since he was briefed on the information. Rosie came back into the room and he thanked her for the tea as he took a sip. While he was drinking Rosie talked, saying Travis acted in her best interest and she believes that.

“There is another attack coming, he wouldn’t tell me when. He said he didn’t even know, but I’m not sure I believe it. We need to prepare for it, have better defenses, train people...” He trailed off. Trav honestly didn’t know when the attack would be, told they needed to iron out the details. Trav wasn’t sure what else to tell them, what other information he could tell that would convince him he actually interrogated the guy and not a spy using information he already knew before heading down there.

“I’ve been good, better now after talking to Phoenix. And he fixed the crown!” Kaylessa said in response to Jaiden asking how she was, and holding up the crown before putting it on her own head with a smile. Then Violet asked if she would be joining them, Kay turned her head not knowing what she was talking about as Phoenix hadn’t said yet, but right when she thought that Phoenix explained they were going back to his place. She was thinking of saying no and going back to show Zada the fixed crown and tell her what Phoenix had said, but then he brought up tea. “Oh! Yeah I’ll come! Sounds like fun.” She said smiling before he continued saying they should get of the cold. “It’s not that cold, last year was worse, the lake froze over night and Zada wasn’t too happy about it.”

Kaylessa skipped along side the group, often getting ahead and then skipping back to them. “So I heard that Markus had some new guest over recently, though Neden won’t let me meet them. Like, why? I love meeting new people. I even heard he’s a human like Travis, and sorta like me. Ish.” She brought up. She overheard it between Neden and Rosie but as soon as Kay started asking questions she was told not to worry about it and Rosie tried changing the subject. And Neden wouldn’t even tell her when Kay put on the fake frowny face Zada had taught her to try to use when told no. “It’s weird.”

As the group continued, Kaylessa led most of the conversations with the group, though as they got closer she grabbed onto Phoenix’s hand. “Hey Phoenix. I have a question.” She stopped skipping and matched his walking speed. “Should I get Alex something? Maybe flowers or something? There’s this grotto I found in the woods with these really cool brown flowers, they would match his eyes you know.” Kay asked with a smile. She wanted to get Alex something to show how much she matters to her and she loved making crafts with flowers. So many options and she was really interested in using the flowers from the grotto she found.

Even if it had been the last thing he’d wanted to do at one stage, he was glad he brought the others round. It made him feel a little less alone for a while. It made things feel a little more normal. Made it a little easier to deal with. But it couldn’t last forever, and all too soon, he was alone again. He went back to his repetitive routine. Run, work, sleep. Repeat, repeat, rinse and repeat, over and over again. Sometimes he went to Markus’ to see Jaiden and Violet. He perfected his Opera Cake recipe at 3AM one morning. Abuela still came for her bread and pastries, and Phoenix pretended he was more okay than he actually was. She’d always been able to see right through him, and her sad smile as she left told him that that hadn’t changed. But it was either that or probably end up crying at work when he spoke to her, and he refused to give in to that.

Kay appeared to have forgiven him, at least. She still asked if he’d spoken to Alex again, and he’d force a smile and shake his head and say no, they were just too busy. The flower crown still sat on a bookshelf in Phoenix’s apartment, the only place he could find for it where it wasn’t going to be staring him in the face every time he walked into the apartment. She still seemed convinced that Alex had genuinely meant the flirting, and he wasn’t sure what else he could do or say to convince her otherwise. How could she not have known that he was like that with everyone? Was it because she’d only ever really seen him with Phoenix, and he had never been like that with him? Or did she just really believe that he was different with her? He’d told her to bring him the brown flowers she mentioned. Maybe the flowers might make him smile and it would be worth it.

He didn’t want to leave his apartment, but his cupboards and fridge were so low that he really needed to get groceries. Travis always stayed open a little later to serve the night-dwellers, which meant that Phoenix was able to call in after work. Travis was pleasant as always, but Phoenix wasn’t particularly in the mood for a chat. He took his groceries and left again.

There was a strange energy in the air as he walked back to his apartment. He couldn’t explain it, but it was… oddly familiar, and not in a good way. It was a tension, as if something bad was about to happen.

He’d just gotten back into his apartment and put the groceries down on the counter when he heard the first scream. Something told him to slam the door and lock it, told him to hide. But instead, he sprinted back down the stairs, back into town. The hunters were back. He met one almost at his door, but before he could react, a vampire appeared from nowhere and tackled the hunter, their teeth already in the hunter’s neck. Phoenix turned and ran, running back towards town.

He didn’t expect to see Abuela there. He wasn’t, however, surprised to see her punch a hunter who was at least a foot taller than her in the face and knee him in the groin. “Abuela! Where’s Alex?” He called. He didn’t give a damn about their fight, he needed to make sure he was safe. He hadn’t dealt well with the first attack, so if they were going to be attacked again, he had to try and help. “He went to the graveyard!” Abuela called back, and Phoenix took off running again, avoiding the hunters as best he could.

Rosie and Travis excused themselves from Markus'. He insisted on walking her home to make sure she got home safe. And it was there that he told her the truth of why the hunter had known who she was. She wasn't exactly happy about it, but it did make sense at least. It was an answer.

The next few days were quiet. Too quiet. Neden and Travis stayed passing on the information from the patrols, and everything was quiet. Considering they'd captured and killed one of the hunters, Rosie knew that quiet was certainly not a good thing. It was a matter of time before they retaliated. And they needed to be prepared. The patrols got bigger and patrolled for longer. She and a few of the other teachers stayed after hours to make sure the kids who stayed late got home safe, walking or driving them home themselves if needed. They were preparing for an attack, if they couldn't make it obvious.

So when she heard the screaming start from town, she knew exactly what it was. She'd stayed after school to make sure the drama kids got home from rehearsal safe. When they'd announced they were doing a production of Macbeth, Rosie had gotten roped in as director. It was turning out better than she'd imagined, but that afternoon, she hadn't been able to focus on any of it. She was just getting her stuff ready to leave when the screaming started. She and the others had prepared for this. Their first priority was to get the kids home safely.

She and half a dozen sophomores had ended up too close to the centre of town, where the worst of the attacks seem to be concentrated. She'd decided that it wasn't worth getting them all home, and instead was going to bring them back to hers. There was enough room and she could keep them safe. And then a hunter ambushed them. Her kids were ready to fight, but not as ready as Rosie. He hadn't expected her to take flight and kick him in the face from the air. But he recovered quickly and grabbed her ankles, yanking them towards her. She leaned into it and drove the force of her weight into it, knocking him out. She hit the ground and yelled for her students to run. And they ran, just like she'd told them to. They were kids. They didn't need to fight this fight, they needed to be safe. She got to her feet and started following them, catching up to them easily. She was going to protect these kids, no matter what. No matter what she had to do.

Travis walked Rosie home after he told them a little bit more information before saying there wasn’t much else, and once again apologizing for killing the hunter, even though he was only sorry with the situation it was caused. The hunter being dead was a loose end that was gone and one less thing for Travis to worry about. When they finally arrived at Rosie’s place Travis finally answered her question about how the hunter knew Rosie was a siren. He had thought over this answer for a little bit and was able to answer easily. Basically he explained that the hunter wanted Travis to help him escape, and when Trav was trying to calm him down, he explained what he would have to go against, including a siren. And when she entered the room he probably put it together. He gave her a hug and apologized for it, that he never wanted her to get hurt.

Over the course of the next few days, Travis did report back to the Branded to brief them on what happened, of course leaving out he was the cause of death for the captured and hostage, telling him he was killed when he tried to escape and that the monsters probably know they are going to attack soon. He recommended them calling it off so they wouldn’t be on such a high alert with the patrols they were doing, they were expecting an attack this time. They said they would think about it and then questioned Travis. He wasn’t use to this and was caught off guard. It seemed like they didn’t trust him, and making sure he wasn’t sympathetic to these freaks of nature. Travis gritted his teeth as he explained why he was sent there and that’s what he was doing. Not just for him or because they ordered him to, but for his parents and for it to never happen to anyone else again.

This night Travis had stayed up later, once again Neden saying his store being open would be more beneficial than him joining the patrol. Phoenix had called saying he would come pick things up, so Travis had some of his usual stuff ready, though expected him to probably get some more stuff. As he finally left Travis started closing up shop before a chill ran down his spine and then a scream, followed by much more and yelling. Travis bolted outside and saw the chaos and the cause. They were attacking. He slammed the door to his shop closed and headed into his apartment that was connected, but then he remembered something. Rosie. She had told him she would be spending a couple nights later at the school, and tonight was one of those nights and would probably be getting ready to head home or even on her way.

Travis was getting ready to don a mask and join his fellow Hunters in the night, but now he could only think about Rosie, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if something happened to her. He quickly grabbed a pistol and tucked it into his belt, a knife into his boot, and one of his hunting rifles and darted out. He knew he wouldn’t be shot on sight by the Branded, but they would be alerted by him not in attire nor attacking with them. But Travis didn’t care, all cared about was making sure Rosie was safe, and started running to her place, where just a couple days ago he had walked her home to make sure she was safe.

While running he heard a howl, one he had only heard one other time in Greythorne, and that was of Markus, usually spine chilling, but right now he didn’t care. The streets were chaotic and fires were being made through many alleys. The Branded were trying to keep their prey in the open, easier to pick off as well as watching each other’s backs. Travis got knocked down as a vampire pounced on him, but quickly got off as he recognized Travis but then ran off as silver bullets were fired in his direction. Trav didn’t stick around too long as he was almost to Rosie’s.

Travis crossed a field and saw Rosie’s place in sight, and her in her doorway, back to the rest of the world. He didn’t know what she was doing but then noticed couple hunters rushing towards her. “Rosie!” He shouted, but when she turned around it was too late, a female hunter on the patio with her with a knife, probably coated in some sort of solution to hurt the super naturals, and the others a couple feet away with their gun aimed at her. Travis pulled his rifle off his shoulder and fired. His shot was to the female hunter closest to her in the back of the knee causing her to go to a kneel. This took the attention of the other hunters off of Rosie as they turned and faced Travis. “Stand down. You know why we are here. They are the enemy Tr-” But before they could finish Travis fired the rifle again, two shots this time, taking out two more hunters. Gunfire from the last hunter, not counting the one closest to Rosie, but Travis quickly hid behind some small stone cover. “You traitor to humanity!” The man yelled at Travis in anger, mistakenly emptying his clip around and into Travis’ cover, one actually grazing his leg before he pulled it in closer behind it.. He was quick to reload but Travis was able to pop up and fired a shot into the man’s shoulder. They were wearing a sort of reinforced armor, the type Travis knew they would be. But he fired two more shots into the man’s side as he clutched his shoulder, one of the few weak spots on their armor.

“Rosie.” He called out again as he rushed towards her remembering the woman he shot in the back of the knee, but saw that Rosie had already taken care of her. “You need to head inside, it’s not safe out here.” Travis said as he slowed down and stopped a few feet from Rosie. She quickly refused, saying she wanted to fight, but then pointed out the wound on his leg offering to patch him up. He didn’t feel any pain from it, probably from the adrenaline. “I’ll be fine. But if you insist on fighting…” He pulled the pistol from his belt and held it out. “They have armor on-” He paused for a second, trying to think of how he would explain knowing that. “At least it looked like it when I shot him in the shoulder. But they aren’t expecting y’all to be using guns.”

As Rosie took the gun, Travis held out his hand at the bottom of the small steps to Rosie. “But I’m not letting you fight alone.” He said, throwing out a small smile.

There was more hunters than last time. They seemed to be swarming from everywhere. She didn't have enough room between the trees to take to the air, so instead she was using her wings to shelter as many of the kids as she could as they ran. And now they were using freaking arrows. She narrowly dodged one and had pulled one of her group into a bear hug to stop her from being hit. She was trying to think if there was anywhere nearer they could use when Markus emerged from the woods. Rosie shot him a relieved smile, but then they hit him with an arrow too. She knew Markus didn't go down that easy, but that didn't stop the concern from twisting her stomach. He just yanked it out with a grimace, and shot her a look that she understood entirely. When he told them to look away, she listened, spreading her wings to shield her students. It was less for their sake and more for Markus' privacy. She knew the transformation wasn't pleasant, and knew he wouldn't want an audience. The growl made her smile a little, and as the wolf lunged to attack the hunter, she took into a sprint, darting back towards her house.

Rosie had just gotten the kids back inside when she turned around to find the hunters on her porch. She prepared herself for a fight, her wings snapping out from behind her. Someone called her name, a warning as there was a bang, and the hunter nearest Rosie fell to her knees. Rosie aimed a kick at her face, feeling a satisfying crunch as the woman's nose broke and she stumbled back. "Monster bitch-" the woman growled, slashing out with the knife. Rosie jumped to avoid the swipe and came down hard on the woman's hand, sending the knife flying out of reach. The woman tried to grab Rosie's legs to pull her to her level, but another kick to the face and the woman fell backwards, unmoving. The blood loss from the bullet wound would probably take care of her, but Rosie took the opportunity to tie her to the railings anyway, just in case. Her song wouldn't work on an unconscious victim, she'd learned that along the way.

She turned as somebody called her name, and frowned to see Travis limping towards her, insisting she went back inside. "Do you seriously think I'm not going to fight this, Trav? I'm not losing anyone else to them," she said. "And let me have a look at that leg before you make it worse, you hear me?" She said. He shrugged her off, told her they seemed to be wearing armour. She raised an eyebrow as he held out the pistol, but it did make sense. She sighed, and took it. She just smirked as Trav held out a hand to her, saying he wasn't going to let her fight alone. "I'm not going to hold your hand through it, Travis," she teased, striding past him. "No matter how scared you might be." She teased, before striding back into the woods. A hunter charged at her almost right away, and she raised the gun and squeezed the trigger. One shot in the shoulder, and another square in the best as he stared in shock at her. "Travis, come on, back into town!" She called, already starting to sprint through the woods. She spotted a familiar figure helping somebody into their home, and a hunter appearing to try and chase them. Rosie didn't use the gun, instead taking to the air and throwing her weight on top of the guy. As he struggled, she leaned in to his ear and sang softly, softly enough that nobody else would hear. She commanded him to go fight against the other hunters, before climbing back off and brushing herself down. "If you need more space, I've got about a class of high school students in my place but could fit a few more. Let me know if you need help with anything," she said to Zada as the hunter she'd entranced raised his gun and started shooting at his teammates. She smirked at Zada, before turning and catching back up with Travis.

Travis let out a light chuckle as Rosie let out a few remarks about her helping him when he was the one actually helping her. As he turned around he watched her quickly put down another Hunter with minimal effort and only a few shots. “That’s my girl…” He said with a smile under his breath after she called after him and the two started sprinting through the woods towards town.

As the two ran Travis spotted Zada helping others as well as a hunter closing in on them. But before Travis could say anything Rosie was already in action, going full Siren. She was quick to get on top of the Hunter and say, no, sing, something into his ear. Trav kept his gun trained on him until he was out of sight and fighting his fellow hunters. He kept a watch out while Rosie and Zada held a small conversation about keeping people safe. While scanning the area he saw a familiar small figure running, Kaylessa. Though it wasn’t running or skipping like she usually does when she was in a good mood but there was urgency in how she moved. He thought about following after her but didn’t want to ditch Rosie behind, so he waited and was going to bring it up to her.

Rosie was quickly back by Travis side. “Hey. Kaylessa was running, she seemed scared or something. A way I haven't seen her before. I think we should make sure she’s okay.” He said to her as he looked back into the town. There was less gunshots going on and he felt as if the tide was turning back into Greythorne’s favor. Rosie quickly replied and agreeing to his worry about the half-elf and Trav led the way in the direction he saw Kaylessa was going.

Travis finally got through the woods and stopped when at the edge of the clearing before the lake, but not seeing Kaylessa anywhere in sight. The lake was clear as the ice had started to form across it over the last couple nights, Greythorne was getting deeper into the winter season. But he couldn’t see Kay anywhere. “Hmm… Do you see her anywh-” Trav was cut off as he heard a scream and barely caught the glimpse of something falling and crashing into through only a short distance from them. “Kaylessa!” Travis shouted as she went into the water and didn’t come up. Zada was all the way back in town and even if Travis ran full speed and his leg wasn’t already injured he probably wouldn’t make it to her and back in time. Him and Rosie would have to act now.

“I’m going in after her.” Travis said as he was already running towards the edge of the lake taking off his jacket, ignoring whatever Rosie was saying. He knew she would think of something, probably something smarter than willing diving and and swimming into the mostly frozen lake, but he had to act now. He fired a couple rounds from his rifle quickly to loosen the ice and dived in and swam in the direction he saw Kaylessa fall.

The cold water felt like needles pricking against his skin, stinging into his already wounded leg. The moonlight shinning through the ice was surprisingly clear and he quickly saw Kay, he watched her struggle as he got closer but eventually seeing her limbs fall loose and her body start to float on its own. Travis was luckily a really good swimmer from his time in the military and could hold his breathe for an extended time, but feeling of the water was nothing he could of ever been prepped for. He quickly got to Kaylessa and swung her arms around his neck and started swimming back towards Rosie, hoping he would make it in time.

As he swam, it got more difficult for Travis to move his limbs. He could feel his skin starting to get numb as he got closer to his entry point into the lake. Just a little bit further… just stay with me Kay… He thought to himself. Travis started to get worried as his vision started to get darker, the cold water not exactly helping, but he could tell he wouldn’t be able to hold his breath much longer. Trav felt like his body was going to give out, he bursted through the opening by the edge of the water and crawled out, pulling Kaylessa out and laying her across the lake bank. Travis was shivering and his teeth was chittering from the cold.

Rosie had yelled at Travis to get out of his wet clothes, something about hypothermia and the clothes would just keep him cold. “H-h-help K-kay.” He was able to barely mumble out in between short breaths, but she was already on helping Kaylessa. His limbs slowly moved as she took off his shirt, he could feel his body start to shut down from the freezing temperatures, but he knew if he gave up and closed his eyes he possibly wouldn’t open them. “R-Ro-Rosie… I’m… sor-sorry.” He breathed out, teeth still chittering.

Rosie made her way back to catch up to Travis. She'd noticed somebody running past them out of the corner of her eye, but hadn't seen who it was. When Trav said that it was Kay and that she'd seemed upset. She thought for a second, before nodding. The fighting seemed to be beginning to die down, and besides, she had promised she'd look out for Kay.

The lake was frozen over as they reached it, Travis having apparently seen Kay going this way. But there was no sign of her, and the area was apparently empty. She was about to suggest moving on. She didn't like lingering in this spot for too long, it always made her a little uneasy. But before she could say anything, there was a crash and a scream that seemed all too familiar. Something hit the ice and was there for half a second before the ice cracked and gave way beneath them. Travis was in motion already, running for the lake.

"Travis, don't! I can hold my breath for- oh you idiot," she swore as Travis ignored her and went into the water after Kay. So instead, she turned and screamed for help. They were under for a while, for too long. The water had to be too cold for Travis to stay under that long. If he'd just thought for one damn second... Sirens were built to withstand stormy waters, she would have handled it better. But no, he had to be the goddamn hero.

She sighed with relief as his head broke the surface again, followed by Kay's. He dragged Kay back out of the water, and Rosie was by her side in a minute, already assessing the situation. The cold wasn't an issue for Kay, but she had fallen from a height and had been underwater for a while. Travis, however, was shivering and soaked to the skin. "Get the wet clothes off of you, it'll only make you colder. Wrap this around you and put your own damn jacket back on," she ordered, pulling off her coat and hurling it at him. There was no way it would fit him, but it would be some protection against the cold. She needed to focus on Kay. She was guessing Kay had inhaled some water. "Come on, Kay," she coaxed as she began to pump her chest, trying to get her to coax up the water. "Yeah, well, next time if you just freaking take ten seconds to listen to me-" she said in response to Travis' apology, mostly focusing on what she was doing.

Kaylessa slowly opened her eyes and sat up looking around, her vision was hazy but she could still make out the surroundings. The lake, the trees, the town in the distance; she was in Greythorne, but it wasn’t winter, it seemed more like fall. “What?” She mumbled out loud, running her hands across the grass she was sitting in and ruffling some of the fallen leaves. She was confused, the last thing she remembered was falling into the same lake that was in front of her and crashing through the ice.

”You okay mi Mariposa?” The voice startled Kay, there wasn’t anyone there a second ago and as she turned she saw Alex. “Al-Alex?” She stuttered, surprised, and quickly looking around expecting to see anyone else. She just saw him and Phoenix kissing, and it was just winter. Kaylessa was very confused about what was going on. “But you were just with Phoenix, and we were getting attacked and the kis-” Alex gently put his finger on Kaylessa’s lips and she quickly went quiet as he leaned in closer to her and caressing her face. “Hush, it’s fine my little one.”

A small smile came across Kaylessa’s face and she hugged Alex, squeezing him tight as his arms went around her and he patted her head. This was great, she must of dreamt up the horrible things, a nightmare. Why would anyone ever attack Greythorne, and of course Alex liked her back, she knew the flirts from him were real. Alex pulled back slowly stood up, reaching his hand down to Kay. “Now come on, we have to get going if we want to set up our stand for the festival.” He said with a smile.

Kaylessa went to reach for Alex’s hand but behind him the woods seemed to darken, as if they were disappearing into a black void. “Hurry Kaylessa, take my hand and we can leave.” Alex said again about her going with him but his voice distorted. Then her chest started to feel warm and her throat started to burn. Kay put her hands around her throat as she tried to speak but wasn’t able to, and as she looked up, it wasn’t Alex holding out his hand, but some hooded figure with no face. The figure that lunged for Kaylessa and she opened her mouth to let out a scream but no noise came out. All that happened next was a bright flash of light.

Kaylessa opened her eyes and forced herself to roll over as she coughed up water, barely able to catch her breath. As she finished coughing and finally able to breathe she turned back and saw Rosie handing her her jumper, saying she should wrap up to get warm. Kaylessa didn’t say anything back as she looked around. It was still winter, and she was at the lake. Alex was nowhere nearby, just Rosie and Travis, he was sitting up trying to wrap in Rosie’s jacket. Kay looked back at Rosie and pushed the jumper back. “No.. no I’m-” She coughed a couple more times. “I’m not cold.”

Rosie asked her a couple more times if she was okay and then asked her what she was doing. “Nothing! I was doing nothing. Don’t ask me anything.” She quickly remarked back at Rosie as she looked away, a small tear coming down her face. Rosie softened her voice and got closer to Kay and wrapped her arm around her, telling her it was okay and comforting her. “I-I like Alex… and Phoenix kissed him… He knew I liked him… And Alex kissed him back.” Kaylessa mumbled out quietly into Rosie’s shoulder. Rosie then offered Kay to come back to her place, help her look after Travis and talk to her more, but told her she didn’t have time.

Kay slowly nodded her head as the two stood up and Kay walked over to Travis, Rosie had told her that he saved her life. “Thank you Travy” She said with a half smile rubbing teary face and helping Travis up. The three headed back to Rosie’s place and Kaylessa was happy to get some hot chocolate.

Travis shivered as he sat up and kept his body close to warm himself up and just watched Rosie trying to get Kay to breathe. He wanted to get up and help Kay, but he was barely surviving himself right now, Rosie was right, he was an idiot to do what he did, but he had to act then and his mind made a decision. At least he took off his jacket before going in the water so he had something warm to try to help him, along with the jacket Rosie tossed him that was too small but he just had over himself as a blanket.

As Rosie continued trying to get Kaylessa to breathe, Travis was getting worried, every second going by decreased her chance of surviving. But right when Travis was going to suggest the unfortunate Kaylessa coughed up some water and turned over trying to clear her throat and lungs, coughing up a significant amount of water. “Thank god...” He mumbled to himself as Kaylessa seemed to scan the area. He was shocked when she backed away from Rosie in response to being asked what happened. Why would she react that way? What happened? Trav tonight to himself as she watched Rosie hug her and comfort her, but unable to hear what they were saying, only catching a few words.

Next thing Travis knew Rosie walked over to him and helped him up, saying thank you. “Don’t thank me, I’m just glad you’re okay. And I think I heard one of you say hot chocolate?” He said slowly and tried to smile as he started walking with Rosie and Kay. Rosie held him close as they walked, leaning her head against his bare and cold chest, and he could feel the heat from him as if it was warming up, though he was still freezing from the water and cold temperature breeze.

When the three got back to the house Travis was guided to the couch and laid down, Rosie went to the kitchen to start getting started on making the hot chocolate, Kaylessa quickly following Rosie, it wasn’t long before they were back, and Rosie handed Travis a mug as he slowly sat up and blew on the hot chocolate and took a sip. “This is good Rosie, thanks.” He said as he continued to drink it. She asked Kaylessa to fetch some blankets, and she quickly got up and skipped down the hall to get the blankets.

“You know, giving me your jacket almost made it seem like you care about me.” Travis said as he set the smaller jacket down and just wearing his over his shoulders and torso still exposed. He let out a light chuckle to her reply. “I mean, it was more reaction than anything. And brave? Eh, maybe a little stupid.” He said in response to being brave. And then came the ‘compliment’ from Rosie, and if he wasn’t already red from the cold he probably would’ve turned a little red from her telling him he had a pretty face. He finished his drink and set down the mug, not entirely sure what to say, a little speechless. Rosie excused herself and he just nodded as he went to readjust himself to get more comfortable.

The next thing Travis knew was Rosie had tripped over something, probably him accidentally moving his legs, and was now in his lap as he caught her. His hands were on her waist and she had one hand on his chest and the other next to his head. Their two faces were close and Travis had stopped shivering all of the sudden, the two stared into eachother eyes for what felt forever, Travis starting to get a warm feeling inside. It felt like instinct as his hands moved around to Rosie’s back, sliding down a bit and he felt her hand moving across his chest, the two started to lean in. “Rosie! I think I got them!” Travis heard the half-elf who he completely forgot about was there and quickly readjusted as Rosie got off of Travis. Kaylessa was carrying a pile of blankets bigger than her and stumbling around, since the mountain of blankets she was covering was blocking her view.

Rosie and Kaylessa gave some of the blankets to Travis and made sure he would stay warm, Travis giving s glance over at Rosie with a small smile. They were close to kissing, was it just a spur moment thing or was something else. Travis has numerous thoughts in his head about the scenario and what would’ve happened if Kay didn’t interrupt with her cuteness.

xxxam i more than you bargained for yet?
xxxi'm just dying to tell you
xxxanything you want to hear
xxxbut that's just who i am this week
They cried more that night than either of them had in years. Phoenix held it together until he was out of Alex’s sight and earshot, but the shock of seeing himself covered in his own blood was startling, and the realization of what had almost happened- what had happened, if only for seconds, minutes- hit home. And once the levee broke, it didn’t take much for the floods to start again. Just pulling on clean, dry then clothes was almost enough to set him off, but the fact that they smelled like Abuela’s washing detergent, that they smelled like Alex, sent him into floods of tears. Hugging Alex again when he got back into the kitchen. Laughter at Phoenix having to rescue the hot chocolate and the mac and cheese that turned into tears all over again. Phoenix waking them both up when he woke up from a brutal nightmare, already choking on sobs.

It got better with time. Once the shock and the horror and the guilt of the night was over, things got easier. Phoenix thought Abuela was actually going to cry when she came back the next morning to find the two of them sitting in her kitchen as if the past few weeks had never happened. And as horrible as the night before had been, that feeling of familiarity as the three of them sat in the kitchen and chatted and laughed made everything feel so much better. It felt like coming home.

But not everything was the same. It seemed their entire lives had been shaped by dumb, reckless decisions- and Phoenix’s decision to kiss Alex again after Alex insisted on walking him back to his apartment was no different. He realised the minute that he did it that he might have messed up, that he might be ruining everything they’d just fixed. But then Alex was kissing him back, and god, it just felt so right.

Figuring things out at first hadn’t exactly been easy. It was only when they stopped trying to figure things out and just let it be what it was that everything seemed to fall into place. They’d kept it just to themselves for a while. But they had to tell Abuela. Her reaction was… not what they’d expected. Apparently she’d been waiting for this to happen since they were kids. And after Jaiden “broke” into Phoenix’s apartment at three am to find them making out on the couch, they’d stopped trying to hide it.

After everything that had happened, Phoenix wanted to make sure that nobody was spending Christmas alone. His parents had been planning on coming home for a week or two then- but given that they’d had two major attacks so close together, they were reluctant to, and so were spending Christmas in Australia. Phoenix was oddly conflicted about the whole thing, but didn’t let himself dwell on it. It meant that he didn’t have any commitments and could do something good.

After the chaos that had been Friendsgiving, Phoenix should have been reluctant to invite that many people over again. But after what he felt was careful planning, he was convinced that he would have totally been able to handle it. It took Alex talking him out of it and Abuela offering up her house before he agreed that maybe the apartment was a little small. And he invited people who didn’t have family in town, or who didn’t get along with their family, over to Abuela’s for Christmas dinner, complete with Secret Santa. In return, he just asked people to bring a side, a dessert, or board games for after dinner.

He spent the entirety of Christmas Eve finishing up the last few things he needed to do. It was different to every other Christmas, but not in a bad way. It felt good to be doing something, something that would put smiles on everyone else’s face, and that was what mattered. At half one in the morning, Alex finally convinced him to go to bed.

And even still, Phoenix naturally woke up early. The sun was only starting to rise, the soft light filling the bedroom. Alex still seemed to be asleep, so Phoenix quietly slid out of bed and went to the kitchen. It was still a little strange, having someone else living in the apartment with him. Not strange in a bad way, but just in a way that struck him every now and when he had the place to himself. The apartment seemed smaller, but cosier, feeling more like there was constant life in it. Maybe it was the stones and feathers and other odds and ends that Alex appeared home with that were now scattered over the apartment, or the way that things were just never left in the same way that they had been when he was living alone. And he wouldn’t have changed any of it.

The coffee brewed and a selection of pastries piled on to a plate, he made his way back into the bedroom and put a mug of coffee down on Alex’s bedside table. “Morning, asshole,” he called with a grin. He sat cross-legged on the bed beside Alex, his own mug of coffee in his hands. “Merry Christmas.”

xxxlittle things i should have said and done

Nothing had quite been the same since that night in her house. Nothing had happened that night- Kay had plopped herself down beside Kay and Trav and they’d chatted until Kay started to fall asleep. But Rosie had texted Travis the following morning after he’d left to ask him for dinner.

They’d gone for dinner a few times, gone for coffee a few times, but things never seemed to quite work out. She’d kissed him after their second time going for dinner, but it had been interrupted by her phone ringing. And things like that kept happening. Rosie didn’t mind. She liked just going for dinner or grabbing coffee or going for a walk together.

But after the attack, she’d also taken on a more proactive role in defending the town. Well, specifically, in protecting her students. They were taking it in turns to walk or drive some of the younger students home, as well as any of the older students who lived a little further away. When some of her students wanted to learn self-defence, she agreed, on the condition that it was only to be used if they had no other choice. The most recent attack had been bigger, more aggressive, more damaging, and just telling the kids to run and hide wasn’t going to be enough before long. They had to learn to fight back.

She’d been surprised when she’d gotten word from Phoenix, inviting her around for Christmas. Then he had explained what he was doing and that he didn’t want anybody to feel alone, and she’d gladly agreed. She hadn’t been all that surprised to find out that he and Alex were together. She’d felt sorry for Kay, of course, but she could remember what the two of them had been like in high school. She was only surprised that it had taken this long.

It was nice to sleep in for once. Even still, she woke up relatively early, stretching and yawning. Travis was coming around to hers first and they were going to Alex’s abuela’s place together. She reached for her phone and sent him a text, before having a quick shower and getting dressed.

Hayden had completely lost track of his days over the past few weeks. He’d known that it was close to Christmas, of course, but he hadn’t realised exactly how close it was until he woke up Christmas morning, went out in search of breakfast, and found everywhere closed. It was only then it sank in what day it was.

Something in him had been urging him to try and find this town for a while now. He’d driven all over BC, it felt, before finding himself in the tiny town the day before. He’d arrived into town, and that constant driving urge finally settled, something in him releasing a contented sigh of “here.” He didn’t know why he was here, or what he was supposed to do, but something told him that it was going to be here for more than a few days.

He’d asked the day before if there were any elves in town, anyone like him. The owner of the B&B had shook her head, before going “Oh, wait, we have a half-elf. Her name’s Kaylessa Valven.” They’d written down her address for him. He didn’t know whether or not he should visit, given that it was Christmas Day. But he didn’t have anything better to do, and he figured that if she seemed busy, he could claim to just be stopping by.

But even as he reached her front door, he reconsidered. Maybe tomorrow would be a better time, maybe she had plans today or just wouldn’t want to see anyone. But before he could knock, the door opened, and he was confronted with a young woman, probably about his age, with long dark hair, and big blue eyes. "Uh, hi, sorry, are you... Kaylessa? Sorry, it's just someone told me you're the only other elf- well, half elf in town, and, well, I'm an elf so I thought I should... come say hi. I'm Hayden, by the way. Oh, sorry, are you just heading out? I can... come back?" He rambled.

Kaylessa had a much better night spending it with Travis and Rosie, but started getting tired and excused herself from Rosie’s place, promising to travel safely, the attack had died down but there could still have been stragglers. But Travis insisted on walking him home, he was still a little cold from what all happened, but after hugging Rosie the two walked back to Kay’s place, Travis still wrapped in a blanket. Kaylessa also gave Travis a hug before she walked into her home, and scrawled across her bed and falling asleep.

Kaylessa was excited to get a message and invite from Phoenix talking about a get together with numerous people from Greythorne and even doing a Secret Santa, she pulled Markus’ name. While they were close and she considered him a friend, she had some issues trying to figure out what to get him. Kay knew what he liked, but wanted to get him something that he would enjoy, and not just some generic gift. She spent most of her time since receiving Markus’ name around him trying to get ideas, but not trying to reveal she had his name for the secret Santa. So to make him not think it was her, Kaylessa would ask him questions about Jaiden and what she likes, while slipping in small questions about him. In her mind, if she asked questions about Jaiden, he would think she got Jaiden’s name but not his. Though this only party worked, she ended up getting a lot of ideas for Jaiden and not many gift ideas for him.

One day while walking around town Kay spotted someone walking their dog who was carrying a toy and finally figured out what to get him. While hanging around Markus and being at his place, she noticed his dog Coco didn’t really have much for toys, which made sense since Greythorne didn’t exactly have a pet store and usually would need to be special ordered of someone have to ask Travis to pick it up. So she would get Coco a toy. But Kaylessa wasn’t someone to buy stuff for people but liked making things, so she spent most of the time in the woods trying to find whatever leaves and plants were surviving the winter to make a rope for Coco, hoping Markus would appreciate it.

It was now Christmas morning and Kaylessa was excited. She had finished weaving and making the plant based rope for Coco. She was proud of what she made and was sure that her gift would be well received. She placed it in a box for a poster and wrote who it was for on it. “To Markus (and Coco)" With a small smile and flower next to it. After it was done, Kay was thinking of heading back into the woods, maybe to get some more inspiration for her gift for Markus and quickly got ready and opened her door to head out. Though to her surprise, there was someone on her door step. He had pretty deep blue eyes and hair that was about shoulder length, which not many males around Greythorne did. Kay had never met this man before, but for some reason he felt familiar and had a certain glow about him. “Oh hi!” She said with a smile before he spoke.

At first Kay was confused why he said someone said she was a half-elf and why that would be important to him, but the next thing he said caught her attention and her eyes widened and she was intrigued. He was an elf. She could tell now by his facial features and noticed one of his ears not completely covered by hair. “You’re an elf? Wow! Yeah, I’m half-elf. So like, half you, half Travis then.” She replied to him, And his name was Hayden. “Oh. No, I’m not busy. Was just gonna head into the woods for a bit. But come inside! And call me Kay!” Kaylessa said as she twirled back around and headed inside. “Oh, and please take off your shoes.” Though Kay didn’t wear shoes, she still had a shoe rack by her front door for others. Taking off your shoes before entering wasn’t Kay’s rule, but one of her mothers that she kept following.

As they went inside Kaylessa apologized for the mess, though it was more of just some blankets thrown around and the occasional dish left on the side table, she prided herself on keeping the house clean, another thing she learned from her mother. “So, you’re an actual full blooded elf? I’ve only ever known my mother, but she left awhile ago.” Kaylessa ran over to the shelf and handed him a picture of her mother and young Kay, before flopping onto the couch. [color=#FF4500]“But tell me about you! Like, what is it like? You have a tribe right? Do our people still do that? Can I say that, our people? You know, since I’m only half.” She spouted many questions at Hayden, showing her hyper personality she has.

Before Hayden could reply to any of her questions a spark came to Kay and it was probably noticeable. “Oh wait!” She quickly got up and went to an old looking trunk in the corner of the room and opened it, picking up the book that was on top, and walking back and handing it to Hayden. It was bound in leather and had a piece of twine tied in a bow that could be untied to open it. “Merry Christmas. It’s an old book of my mom’s and has markings and other stuff I don’t exactly understand. But like, you would know this stuff right? My mother was in a tribe long ago before she left, well… exiled…” Kaylessa trailed off, she knew being exiled meant alot, but couldn’t exactly understand it all. “I tried asking other elves that would come through but th-” Kaylessa paused for a second. “They didn’t like me, and avoided me. Since you know, I’m not like them, not like you.” Growing up, Kay’s mom warned her some people wouldn’t like Kay, not because she wasn’t human, but because she was half, and many elves saw half-elves as less than them. “Sorry if I’m talking too much, I’m just excited.” She finished, smiling again.

The rest of the night was pretty normal as the three of them talked and just talked fo a bit until Travis noticed Kaylessa nodding off and suggesting she should head home. Rosie was worried about her getting back home safe so Travis offered to walk her back. Rosie gave him back his clothes after she ran them through the washer and dryer and gave her a hug before leaving, staying wrapped up in a blanket. “I’ll bring it back, promise.” He said before walking Kay home and heading back to his place. He stayed up a little bit sweeping up glass from the shattered window before finally heading to bed. He couldn’t fall asleep for a little bit because his mind was still on what happened between him and Rosie, and what if Kaylessa hadn’t interrupted, but he finally was able to doze off.

Trav woke up the next day to a message from Rosie asking him out to dinner, which he was dlighted for. The two enjoyed a nice night together, full of laughs and learning about each other, but much like at her house, they were interrupted when Travis got a call from his boss. He knew it was important and excused himself and told Rosie he would make up for it. When he got back to his place from their dinner date, he called back the Branded and wasn’t delighted with the information. The attack was a success in their books, while they did take casualties it was more of an extended experiment and they were testing how well Greythorne would be able to defend themselves and how much they would need to bring for the next attack. He voiced his concerns about being left in the dark but they quickly dismissed him and told him to keep his assignment that they have a special plan for him and he will know when to act.

After getting off the phone Travis called Rosie and asked for lunch the next day where they got some sandwiches and strolled through the park. The two ended up under one of the old oak trees and Travis held Rosie and leaned in for a kiss but this time Rosie’s phone went off, something about her students and she had to go. He understood and the two scheduled for dinner. Which actually went off without a hitch and the first time the two kissed, and since Travis couldn’t get the taste of her off his lips, the two continued with other coffee and dinner dates, in between Travis trying to fix his store and making small supply runs.

Trav was surprised when Phoenix stopped in his store and asked if he had plans for Christmas, which Travis didn’t and was honestly gonna head out of town for the time being, but gladly accepted Phoenix’s invitation for Secret Santa and ended up getting Violet’s name, who disappeared for a little bit since the attack but recently showed back up.

It was Christmas morning and Travis had woken up early to install the new windows for his shop to replace the shattered ones from the attack, since then it was just boarded up with plywood to keep the cold air out. His phone dinged and he smiled as he saw it was a message from Rosie. He quickly cleaned up his tools and replied to her.

To: Rosebud
Merry Christmas to you too! And that sounds great. I got you a little something as well.

Travis got dressed and gathered the gifts he had gotten, for Rosie and Violet, before heading over to Rosie’s place, waving and saying hello to the few people that were out. Some people had their shops open in the morning, while others had agreed to be open in the evening. This gave everyone a chance to spend Christmas with the people they cared about as well as not completely close down Greythorne.

After walking through town, Travis finally got to Rosie’s place and knocked on the door, hearing ROsie yelling she’ll be a minute, before finally opening the door and inviting him in. “You know, your style never surprises me, just surprises me how you look good in everything.” He said with a smile as he took off his coat and sat on the couch, quickly pulling out a small box with a name tag wiht Rosie’s name on it. “Hope you like it, wasn’t easy to find.” Inside the box was as small disco ball necklace which he saw when trying to buy himself a new watch but immediately thought of Rosie when he saw it and had to buy it for her.

Phoenix just smirked as Alex swore at him in response to his greeting. It had only been a couple of weeks, but it hadn’t taken long to get used to it. Then again, he’d gotten the same response any time Alex had passed out on his couch for whatever reason as they were growing up, so he couldn’t say he wasn’t used to it. The same went for Alex practically inhaling the pastry, making Phoenix raise an eyebrow and his smirk widen a little.

Phoenix raised his eyebrows as Alex brought up the present again. He’d been getting this for a while now. Or else Alex would talk about how amazing the present he’d gotten for Phoenix was and try and bait Phoenix into giving away some of the details. In all honesty, trying to find a suitably nice present had been hard. It didn’t help that he was limited to the few shops in Greythorne itself and online shopping. But he’d wanted to find something special after everything they’d been through.

“Okay fine, whatever, you can have it if it’ll shut you up,” Phoenix said melodramatically, putting his coffee back on the bedside table and getting up, going and retrieving the small box from under the tree, before going back into the bedroom and climbing back into bed, pulling the covers back up. “Here.”

He’d found it by chance. He’d been looking in the antique store for something else entirely, but he’d spotted this instead. A small, simple, gold pocket watch. It was in need of a good clean and was perhaps a little plain for some, but it was perfect. Phoenix had brought it to the jewelers to get it cleaned up, and to get a few symbols engraved into it. A sigil for protection on the front and back, as well as Alex’s initials.

“You always like shiny things,” he said by way of explanation with a small shrug, while trying to gauge Alex’s reaction.

Rosie grinned at Travis’ response to the text, starting to make up the pancake batter. She honestly hadn’t known what to get Travis for Christmas. She wanted to get something nice, something… different. She didn’t have a whole lot of time to go shopping, but the idea struck her late one night as she listened to some of her records while grading papers

She’d just retrieved the first batch from the pan when there was a knock at the door. She went to let him in and beamed at him as he stepped inside. “Thank you!” She called as they went into the sitting room. She raised an eyebrow at the small box, but eagerly tore open the paper.

“Oh my god, I love it! It’s so pretty!” She gushed, pulling it out of the box and putting it on. It was a little bit quirky too, which just made her love it more. “Hold on, I’ll get you your pancakes and your present,” she said, going back out to the kitchen and plating up some pancakes for both of them, and retrieving the present from where she had it left beside her small Christmas tree.

“It took a bit of work because nobody really… does this any more, or they do it differently. But when I was growing up, if you really liked somebody… you made them a mixtape,” she said, handing him the box. “I figured you probably don’t still have a cassette player, so I got you one of those too. Don’t listen to it now. You listen to mixtapes when you get home and when you can really appreciate it,” she said with a grin.

The energy he got from the young woman across from him was immediately positive. She didn’t seem fazed by his presence at all, already chatting away and inviting him in, asking him to take off his shoes as he did so. The house was warm and cozy and made him feel immediately at home, as did his energetic host.

He glanced at the photo she handed him, of the beautiful woman and the pretty young girl in it. He couldn’t say he recognized the woman, but his village had been small and an entire ocean away. Frankly, he would have been more surprised if he had recognized her.

Even though Kay kept asking him questions, she wasn’t giving him much of a chance to answer. He found her enthusiasm endearing though, and he found himself smiling. He’d taken his life for granted, growing up around people who respected him and almost revered him. He couldn’t imagine not knowing other people like him.

She seemed to suddenly remember something and shot to her feet, darting across the room to a trunk. He wasn’t sure what to expect, but the book she handed him wasn’t it. He untied the piece of twine and began to examine the book, before she revealed that her mother had been exiled and that the other elves who had passed through had ignored her and her questions. There were some elves like that, who believed their bloodline was sacred, that there should never be any interbreeding because they were above the humans. Hayden didn’t know all that much about the humans, but from what he had seen, cutting themselves off seemed like a foolish decision. And kicking people out for falling in love seemed even more so.

“It’s completely understandable. Our people, well, they’re not always the most open-minded. But that mindset is becoming outdated. The elf blood matters just as much as the human blood,” he said with a smile. “So, I can’t answer most of your questions, because as you can probably tell, I’m not really from around here, so whatever tribe or village your mother came from could have done things differently. There’s a lot of… differences, depending on where they are. See, we didn’t grow up entirely separate from humans, we just grew up around humans who knew to stay away from magic and who knew not to piss off magic users,” he joked. “But there are some who are very closed off, who don’t like the humans at all. I’d say they were some of those that passed through.” He turned his attention back to the book. He recognized some of the symbols on the front- they were the same runes and sigils that ran along his arms. He opened the book and flicked through the pages. He didn’t immediately understand a lot of it, but there was power in this book. It was old, old enough that he wasn’t sure how much of it he’d be able to work out without help, but he could feel the power just by holding it.

“Thank you, Kay. I’m afraid I… kind of forgot it was Christmas, otherwise I would have come with something for you too.” He admitted, closing the book and putting it to one side. “So tell me, what do you want to know? I don’t have a gift but I do have stories.”

“I’m glad you like it! The second I saw it, I thought of you.” Travis said with a smile. He was filled with joy that Rosie appreciated the gift. Yeah jewelry was a little cliche, but he really felt it was something Rosie would like and wear, and when she put it on it did fit her look very well. He nodded as she excused herself to get them their breakfast and the gift she had gotten for him. Even though he had a slight inkling she would give him a gift, he was still surprised when she retrieved a box from next to her tree.

Travis was intrigued as Rosie kept the box close to her as she explained the reasoning behind her gift. He hadn’t listened to a mix tape, let alone one on a cassette in a long time. But he’s never had someone make him one before, and he genuinely felt thankful for it. “Rosie! Oh my god. This is great, and you didn’t need to get me a cassette player, I couldn’t bought one. But thank you. I can’t wait to listen to it.” Trav said as he set down the box with his gifts in it and embraced Rosie, pulling her in for a long kiss.

After a few moments of kissing Travis finally pulled back with a smile. “Thank you again Rosie, but this food is teasing my stomach and I’m hungry.” He said with a chuckle and turned towards the table and started eating. The two of them messed around a little bit and after goofing around maybe a little bit too much the two had to spend some time getting syrup off of Rosie’s couch.

A few hours passed before Rosie and Travis headed over to Alex’s place for the get gift exchange and get together, both of them having their separate Secret Santa gifts, making small chit chat along the way. Outside of Alex’s Travis spotted a familiar face, with an unfamiliar figure next to her. “Hey Kay! This a new friend of yours, or a gift for someone?” Trav laughed lightly at his own joke. This person he hadn’t seen before in town, so he was a little wary of them. Kaylessa quickly introduced the new person, Hayden, a full elf. “Well nice to meet you Hayden, little bit a warning, these folks are a little out there.” He was said as he shook the elf’s hand before Rosie lightly hit him on the arm. After introductions Travis knocked on the door of Alex’s place and waited to be greeted, looking back and smiling at Rosie.

Kaylessa drifted her gazed after mentioning being discriminated against due to her being a half-elf, but slowly looked back to Hayden as he said it was understandable. He spoke about how those mindsets are becoming outdated, a small smile crept out as he said the blood matters the same, elf or human. She listened as Hayden spoke about how he wasn’t from around here and even so tribes could be different from one another as they are from different areas. That thought hadn't crossed her mind, she just thought all tribes were the same and followed the same set of rules, but it did make sense. Much like Travis told her how different towns had different rules as well, tribes of course would be the same as they were sort of like smaller towns. It was a little upsetting that there were still elves that had those ideals about blood purity being important. They had never met or even given Kaylessa a chance and were already judging her.

Kay watched Hayden flick through a few pages and his eyes move across the pages, she wanted to ask what it was about, but just gave him some silence and time to concentrate and take in whatever information the book was offering. She had asked numerous people throughout the town, even before the elves would come and go, and no one really understood it. She perked back up when Hayden said her name and apologized for not bringing her a gift. “Oh, its fine! Just talking to an actual elf is a gift in itself!” She said with a smile. “Though, am glad the elf is you, you’re really nice and such.”

The elf then asked what Kaylessa wanted to know, though he didn’t have any actual gifts, he did have actual stories. “Hmm…” Kaylessa took a moment to ponder what she wanted to know, she had many questions but wanted to make it count. “Well, could you tell me what it is like being in a tribe and what exactly you did? I heard they were sort of like our town here but more close and how each person has a specific role or job.” Kay leaned forward and sat cross legged on the couch, brushing her hair out of her face.

Kaylessa listened to Hayden talk, giving him her full attention as the two talked for awhile. She had lost track of time until she glanced at the clock and saw she would be needing to head to Alex’s place. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I have to get going, we have a Secret Santa thing.” Kaylessa quickly got up and got the small bag with Markus’ gift in it. “Hey! You should totally come! I’d really like you to meet my friends, and be nice to spend more time with you.” Kay asked as she walked past Hayden getting her jacket back on and opening the door. Her mind has been on Alex still, but something about being with and talking to Hayden made her feel better. “Please?”

Hayden eventually caved and the two walked outside, but quickly stopped as he asked her if she needed a jacket or atleast shoes in the cold. Kaylessa giggled a little before answering. “Oh, no I’m okay. I don’t get cold as others do, and I enjoy the feeling of the earth beneath my feet. My mother said I was gifted. I can also heal others.” She said as she took his hand and led him towards their destination.

Outside of Alex’s place Kaylessa saw two friendly familiar people. “Travis! Rosie!” She said outloud as she gave Rosie a hug. She stepped back as Travis asked about Hayden. “Yeah! This is Hayden, he’s an elf, like an actual elf.” She said, grabbing Hayden’s arm. “Hay, this is Rosie and Travis. He’s a human, like the other half of me that isn’t you, and she’s a Siren.” She laughed at Travis' little joke before he knocked and waited for someone to answer the door.

It didn’t take Zada long to find and scoop the dead bird up from the ground. Its red feathers were a tragic, but beautiful, contrast to the snow. Then she put it in a large zippered freezer bag, and wrapped that nicely in a gift bag, complete with beautiful tissue paper and curled ribbon. That would do. Zada then finished getting ready, applying a deep red lipstick to her lips and putting on her coat. The last step before heading out was grabbing the baklava she’d made for the event. Phoenix had asked everyone to bring something and, honestly, you couldn’t have too many sweets at a Christmas party. She also just, really loved baklava.

She took the walk to Maria Garcia’s house at a leisurely pace: she’d left in plenty of time, and there was no way she would be late. She enjoyed seeing the town in winter, even if the beautiful cover of snow came at the price of a frozen lake.

When she arrived at the house, everyone was just standing in a group outside. Zada was a little confused, and shot Rosie a quick ‘what’s going on?’ look, but didn’t bother trying the door. If everyone was grouped outside like this, there must be a reason. She noted the newcomer in the group, but didn’t make a move to introduce herself. She did, however, greet Kay warmly. It wasn’t long before Neden arrived with a… Comically large bag slung over their shoulder, and it was they that ushered them all inside. The first thing Zada did when she stepped through the door was look for Alex, and when she found him, she said, “Was there a reason we had to wait out in the cold until everyone arrived?”

Alex just stared at her, as if he didn’t have a good answer to her question, and then stood up and attempted to take the baking dish from her, “Here, I can-” Zada didn’t let it go, but instead held tighter to her dish, “I’ve got it.” Alex started to direct her to the kitchen, which she ignored. She knew where it was, she was in Maria’s book club. She went and put her dish with the rest of whatever else was there. All presumably made by Phoenix. She couldn’t help but smile at it all, it really was incredibly kind, and made the town feel more like home, and her friends feel more like family.

She took off her coat and settled down in a chair just in time to listen to Neden’s little speech about presents, and the hats. Zada had no intention of wearing one, and even upon Neden’s insistence that she put it on, just stared blankly at them. She watched as everyone put their own hats on, some with more reluctance than others, and sighed. There was really no harm in wearing the hat, so she carefully perched it on her head, as if to try not to mess up her hair. Still, the whole thing was… Charming, and she couldn’t help the ghost of a smile that appeared on her face.

She’d never had a Christmas that involved this much gift giving (the years she even celebrated had been more private affairs), and the whole thing really was pleasant. Though she wasn’t entirely sure what to think of some of her gifts, she still gave Neden a small smile, “Thank you, these are lovely.” She decided to go ahead and put the necklace on, even as she thanked Neden for the gifts, partially because the color made her look a bit more festive, and partly to show that she did genuinely like at least one portion of her gift.

After Neden was done, Zada picked up the gift she’d brought, and held it out to Alex, but made no move to take it to him. After a short moment, and a confused look, he stood up and took the present from her. He moved slowly, as if he were expecting her to jump up and bite his head off at any moment. He took the gift back to his seat to open it, shooting Phoenix a wary glance as he sat down. “I drew your name. It made me think of you.” Zada didn’t know what reaction to expect from Alex opening the gift, but pure elation hadn’t been it. She had to admit, though, she was kind of glad he liked the bird.

When Phoenix said Alex could finally have his gift, a wide-and goofy-grin spread across Alex’s face. He loved getting presents, and this was no exception. He set his coffee precariously on the bed, grabbed the present, opened it up quickly, and turned the pocketwatch over in his hands a few times; looking it over. He nodded at Phoenix’s explanation-he had always liked shiny things. He opened it up to look at the face, before shutting it back and looking up at Phoenix, a smile on his face, “This is great.” He figured he could carry it at work: he often had to dress up a little more than he would like, and couldn’t wear all of his amulets and other paraphernalia as easily, and he often felt he needed all the protection he could, working with the dead. He leaned over and kissed Phoenix on the cheek, “I’m gonna break this thing, though, I want you to know that. There’s no way I won’t.” Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, “Thank you. I love it.” He picked up his cup and took a long drink of his coffee, “You can’t have your present yet, though. I don’t have it. I’ll give it to you at the party.”

He’d had to keep it at Abuela’s, because otherwise he would get excited and give it to Phoenix early, and then he’d have nothing to give on Christmas, and that would be a disaster. They spent a short amount of time talking and drinking their coffee before they had to get going. They wanted to make sure they were there before the others so they could get things set up. Alex also wanted to make sure he had the gifts he was bringing squared away: one for Jaiden (that she was going to love), and one for Travis, who he’d drawn for the secret santa exchange. He’d had a little bit of trouble with that one: he hadn’t known Travis for an excessively long time, and admittedly mostly talked about himself (and the town) when he saw the man. It was probably fine, though. He’d finally decided on giving Travis something he’d found in the woods, which was where he generally went for his gift ideas.

Soon enough they were headed to Abuela’s house, with more foods and baked goods than Alex thought necessary. “What was the point,” He said as they walked, “In asking everyone to bring something, if you were just going to make all of this, anyway?” He wasn’t upset, in fact he found it amusing. He knew that Phoenix just wanted everything to be nice for everyone, but he thought that Phoenix tended to do too much, and stress himself out.

In Abuela’s house, all the pictures of Phoenix were back up, plus new ones that Alex didn’t even know she had. If you didn’t know better, walking into the house, you might just think that Phoenix was her grandchild, and not Alex. Alex couldn’t help but chuckle, “You’re definitely her favorite…” The two spent a little time getting things set up and ready before Alex excused himself to go get Phoenix’s present from its hiding place; and evidently missed the first knock on the door. Everyone made their way inside just as Alex was sitting down to wait for them to arrive. Zada asked him why he’d made them all wait outside, and Alex didn’t know what to say to that. He was a little confused, and he was certainly scared of Zada, so instead he sort of just ignored the question off and tried to help her with the dish she’d brought, but she brushed him off and went to drop it off herself.

He stood still for a moment, face blank as if processing what had just happened. He’d never known how to take Zada, and this was no exception. Soon enough, though, he turned to the others with a charming smile, “I didn’t hear you knock, I didn’t leave you outside on purpose. The door wasn’t locked, though, you could’ve come in at any time.” He noticed the elf accompanying Kay pretty quickly and offered a warm smile, “I’m Alex. This is… Well...” He paused for a second, not entirely sure how to describe the house, “My grandparent’s house. Welcome.”

It wasn’t long before Neden was ushering them all into the living room passing out hats and talking about gifts. They’d gotten everyone something? Alex put on the hat happily enough; he had to admit that Neden had brought some real holiday cheer with them, even if it was a bit… Much. Neden announced that they could open their gifts, and Alex did. He wasn’t particularly thrilled with them, but he smiled and thanked Neden. It was a nice thought. But then, there was the last one. Now, a sword hadn’t been something Alex was expecting to get for Christmas. But when he opened it, his face lit up in a sort of childish wonder, and before he could even think about it he found himself saying, “Oh my god, this is incredible.”

Soon afterwards, Alex noticed Zada holding something out to him. He waited a second, and it became clear that he was going to have to get up and go to her. Fine. He didn’t particularly like being treated like some sort of animal or whatever she thought of him as, but he wasn’t about to argue with her, either. He was, frankly, terrified of her, and the careful way he approached, and how quickly he retreated back to Phoenix’s side made his fear pretty evident. She said the gift made her think of him, which made him even more wary, because he knew she didn’t think very highly of him. Still, he opened the bag slowly, looked inside, and grinned widely. He pulled the freezer bag up out of the wrappings and looked across the room at Zada, “Thank you! This is great… Really, I like it. I can use this.” There was nothing but sincerity in his tone; he was really, genuinely, thrilled. The look on her face dampened his enthusiasm a little. He wasn’t sure if he was meant to not like the gift, or if that was just what her face always looked like, but he decided not to dwell on it.

Alex turned to Travis, grabbing a small box and handing it to him, “I um, I want you to know that I’m about eighty percent sure this isn’t haunted.” The disclaimer came even before Travis had a chance to open up the pocket knife. Alex had only recently felt comfortable enough to go into the woods again, though never far, and nearly never alone, and he’d found it out there while he was digging around for things. He’d cleaned it up the best he could, and just hoped that Travis would like it, or at least not hate it.

Then he gave Jaiden a gift. He had been planning this particular present for some time, it took a lot of effort and time to get everything together to make it perfect. Inside was a fanny pack, since she’d liked his so much. He waited a moment for her reaction, then smiled and said, “The real present is inside.” Inside, however, was just filled to the brim with various different glitters.

He didn’t wait around for her to open it, in fact he started to walk away even as he told her to open up the fanny pack. He handed Phoenix the tell-tale red envelope of a Christmas card, wanting to make sure to give it to him quickly in case Jaiden murdered him. “Merry Christmas, Phoenix.”

xxxam i more than you bargained for yet?
xxxi'm just dying to tell you
xxxanything you want to hear
xxxbut that's just who i am this week
The smile on Alex's face made Phoenix sigh a little in relief. He knew it was a little old fashioned, but it was still useful, and still pretty. His grin just widened as Alex leaned in to kiss him on the cheek, before admitting that he was probably going to break it. Phoenix just laughed and rolled his eyes. "Oh, trust me, I know that," he teased back. He just picked up the pillow next to him and hit Alex with it as Alex said he had to wait. "You asshole, I should have made you wait too."

They finished their breakfast, finished up the last few things for the dinner, and then started packing up the stuff to bring to Abuela's. As per usual, Phoenix had perhaps over-catered a little, especially considering that he'd asked people to bring food anyway. But, when Alex remarked on it, Phoenix just rolled his eyes. "Because if everyone showed up with sides, we'd have no dessert. And if everyone showed up with desert, we'd have no sides. And if everyone showed up with board games, we'd be totally screwed," he said. He knew that Alex probably knew, he'd probably heard Phoenix muttering to himself trying to figure out who was likely to bring what, before just giving up and deciding to cater for the worst case scenario.

Abuela's was already feeling like home again, the photos back in their proper places. Phoenix hadn't realised how many of photos of him there was until Alex pointed it out, and then he couldn't stop seeing it. He didn't even know how she'd gotten some of those photos unless she'd been on to his parents for them (which, admittedly, was not outside the realms of possibility.) He just laughed in response to Alex's comment about him being the favourite. "It's because I can make her sopapillas and you nearly burned the kitchen down when I tried to show you how," he called as he shoved up his sleeves and got to work doing the last minute prep.

He only realised that the others had arrived when he heard Neden yelling something about wanting to give them all presents, and Zada brushing past Alex with her usual distaste, saying something about him not letting them in, and Alex retorting that the door wasn't closed. A distraction soon arrived in the form of Neden handing him a hat. He grinned and pulled it on as soon as they handed it to him, before spotting a newcomer, someone that he didn't recognise and that was sticking pretty close to Kay, looking a little overwhelmed by the whole situation. "I'm Phoenix, nice to meet you," he said. Alex had rolled his eyes when Phoenix had said he was going to presume that more people than were invited were going to show up, and he'd been right. But he didn't mind. It was nice to see the excitement in Kay's face as she introduced him to people.

He took the small pile of presents from Neden with excitement and attempted to balance the flower crown on top of his christmas hat. That would have been more than enough- and then Neden handed him and Alex "matching presents." He gasped with delight at the sword, looking over to Alex in excitement. "Holy shit, this is so cool!" He gushed.

He just shrugged a little in response to Alex's look as Zada handed over her present to him. She hadn't been asking Phoenix anything about ideas for Alex, so it was much of a surprise to him as it was to Alex. Upon seeing the dead bird, Phoenix shot a look of confusion at Zada. But, of course, Alex loved it, and Phoenix just grinned to himself and shook his head.

"Maybe- before you open that-" Phoenix said, spotting that Alex had handed Jaiden her present. Once the glitter got everywhere, there would be no dragging Jaiden back. "Here. I hope you like it, I... really didn't know what else to get you," He said, handing Jaiden a flat, heavy object. He'd been pestering Alex for ages, trying to get him to help him to come up with an idea, but Alex had initially suggested the fanny pack as her secret santa present, so he'd stopped asking after that. He knew that she'd been having a rough time of it over the past few months, and knew that they probably hadn't helped things by her finding out about them the way they did. So he'd put hours into the scrapbook instead- handwriting some of her favourite lyrics into it, writing out her favourite recipes so she could make them herself, pressing some of her favourite flowers, and finding every single photo they had together over the course of their friendship, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the blurry, and sticking them in to it. "I left some room at the back so you can add more to it if you want."

Alex left to go retrieve Phoenix's present at last- or maybe just to escape Jaiden's wrath. But he was back quicker than expected, handing Phoenix an envelope. Phoenix raised an eyebrow as he began to tear it open. "If this is an IOU I swear to god I'm break..." he trailed off as he looked at the two tickets in the card. Two tickets to an MCR concert. When they'd started announcing dates, Phoenix had said in passing that he'd been so pissed off when his parents didn't let him go when he was a teenager, but that they probably had a point. He would have been a liability, he would have given them all away. Alex hadn't really said anything, but Phoenix had just presumed it was because he'd heard enough of the complaining at the time.

"Holy fuck-" was all he could get out, just staring at them. This... this wasn't even a "local" venue, this was at least a few hours of a drive away. It was probably almost a day of a drive away, if not more. "Thank you so so much-" he managed to get out, wrapping Alex in the tightest hug he could muster.

xxxyou are always on my mind.
Rosie grinned at Trav's reaction. She'd wondered if it was a little bit cringeworthy, if he would even like something like that, so she was glad when his reaction was genuine. They spent the morning together as Rosie made her mom's stuffing to bring to Phoenix's, as she figured most other people would probably be bringing desserts. It was nice, just relaxing with somebody like this, doing their own thing as they kept each other company. She knew that the dinner was bound to be a little chaotic, but honestly, she was looking forward to it.

They left together, Rosie carrying her baking dish and her presents, having given the bag of drinks she'd also decided to bring to Travis to carry. They met Kay outside, and she awkwardly returned her hug as best she could while balancing the dish in her hands. There was a guy, about Kay's age, standing beside her, and Rosie was pretty sure she hadn't seen him around town before. He'd certainly never been in any of her classes. But Kay answered that question by introducing him. "I'm Rosie," she said, also shaking his hand. "We don't get many elves around these parts besides our Kay here, so it's lovely to meet you!" She said. Travis made a comment about them all being weird, and Rosie batted for his arm. She spotted Zada arriving, who shot her a quizzical look. Rosie shrugged a little, before Neden arrived and led them all into the house.

The scene that ensued was chaos. Neden had, of course, brought presents for everyone, but especially Rosie. She beamed with delight at her presents. "Neden, these are amazing, thank you so much!" She gushed, standing up to hug the angel. The rest of their presents made Rosie watch with interest. The swords were... an interesting choice, and she made a mental note to make a bet with Neden later to see how long they could go without injuring themselves with them.

Zada's present to Alex, and more accurately, their reactions to it made Rosie laugh. She stood up and passed a small bag to Zada. "Happy Christmas, babe. It's no dead bird, but..." she said with a teasing grin. She'd gotten Zada a bottle of their favourite red wine, a selection of slightly obscure but interesting-sounding novels, and a hair comb she'd found entirely by chance.

xxxoh should my people fall
xxxthen surely i'd do the same
xxxconfined in mountain halls
xxxwe got too close to the flame
They spent a while talking, Hayden explaining things to Kay, telling her that he was a healer too. He didn't know why, but he decided against telling her that he was a druid. Maybe it was because he presumed she wouldn't know what it was- or maybe it was because he was afraid she would. He didn't mind it, never had minded the respect his position had earned him, but he liked just being normal for a while.

He had intended on excusing himself when Kay said she was going to meet with her friends- but instead, she asked him to come along. So he went, curious to see more of the town and to see what the other people were like. Upon shaking hands with Kay's two friends- Rosie and Travis- Hayden got two very clear cut impressions. A good one of Rosie- warmth, energy, authenticity. But there was something... off about Travis. Hayden's polite smile slipped for just a moment as he tried to figure out what it was, but then he fixed it back on as if nothing was wrong. He laughed a little as Travis said the people were a little out there- but it didn't take long for Hayden to realise that he wasn't lying.

Inside the house was chaos to say the least. One person was handing out presents left right and centre, and even had some for Hayden. Nobody seemed terribly surprised or upset to see him there, which was nice, making him feel included almost right away. Hayden opened the presents to find a deep green crystal necklace, a book of poetry, and an denim jacket that looked like it would just fit him. Considering that they hadn't known he was coming, he was extremely happy with those presents, and was glad to be engulfed in the chaos of the party. There were, however, a few things he still didn't understand, like why the dark, vaguely threatening woman gave one of the guys- Alex, he had said his name was- a dead bird, and why Alex had seemed so happy about it. The blonde one- Phoenix, wasn't it?- had jumped up to hug Alex and appeared to be fighting back tears. After a few minutes like that, he gathered himself to excuse himself and go finish the cooking.

Hayden laughed a little and leaned in to Kay. "So do you want to tell me a little about all of these people?" He asked with a grin.
