UNSC Service Record:

Name: Choi, Michael L.

Nicknames: Mr. Ray-of-freaking-sunshine.

Rank: Lance Corporal

Service Number: #7105582509

Age: 29
Image
Height: 5'8

Weight: 160 lbs

Appearance: Image Short but very muscular, and of obvious Asian descent. While he's very rarely seen out of his armor, his muscle tone is practically unmatched in his squad from years of various hand-to-hand combat courses and rigorous work out schedules. His short, black hair is always very well kept along with being clean-shaven and respectably presentable at all times. Choi's serious, practically emotionless face has been mocked for years, as the man never smiles or even raises an eyebrow. Hell, only a handful of people have seen him blink. His skin posses few, barely noticeable scars and absolutely no tattoos, which needless to say is irregular for the ever proud ODST. His left shoulder plate was replaced with that of a fallen comrades, which proudly displays a scratched up emblem of Helljumper pride.

Specialization:Demolition, CQB.

Personality: it's hard to give personality to someone who really doesn't have one. Do to a childhood filled with ridiculously high expectations and virtually no praise, Michael is always a serious man to a fault. Completely swallowed with self-enforced discipline, he sees anything that is less than outstanding as unacceptable, whether it be the the performance of others or himself. Often seen as joyless and emotionless, as he never laughs, smirks, giggles, bitches, argues, yells, or even smiles. Very few troopers respect him for his near robotic way of following orders to a T. His superiors, however, seem to adore him as he fulfills objectives well beyond expectations with no question and any assorted BS. Choi has always been the voice of reason and duty, never wasting time with meaningless grudges, childish competitions, hatred towards the enemy, or even mourning his fellow soldiers who died in combat. It's always mission priority. This is what led to his last CO, who was of the more Gung-Ho sort, referring to him as Mr. Ray-of-freaking-sunshine, and the name stuck. To this day, people still call him Michael "Sunshine" Choi. His military record is nearly flawless with one exception. A flaw even his own father couldn't break him of. No matter what, Choi simply can not bring himself to take orders from an idiot. He may be extremely disciplined and dutiful, but he's not mindless. This unwillingness to take orders from Officers he views as clearly unfit to give commands has caused some issues in the past. But then.... it's really hard to argue with his results.

Military History: His father, Admiral Johnathon Mung Choi, is a decorated and very well respected member of the UNSC Fleet Command, and as such has always had high expectations for his sons to carry on his military legacy. Though his youngest son may have caught the blunt of it. Choi was schooled in a UNSC Military Institute on Arcadia before being promptly thrown into Boot Camp the moment he hit the age requirement. He was ruled to be an outstanding young recruit, and was on a tack course for full deployment in a few years. However, at the age of 14, his father and brothers were KIA in the Battle for Arcadia, making him an orphan of war. With only the military to take care of him, he was still dead-set for service. Unofficially, his impressive physical condition made him a candidate for the Spartan III program, but unfortunately the program required that he be an orphan when he was 6-8. With an extremely impressive background and a history of multiple martial arts and infiltration tactics, taught by his father, Michael was one of the few people to be plucked directly out of training to be part of the ODST. With first combat encounter at 18, he proved to be a prime example of a soldier, adhering to every expectation his commanding officers had of him. Years of combat have now made him into a hardened soldier, with vast amounts of experience under his belt and a very impressive record. He was given his own squad when he was 25, but a matter of disobeying his CO caused him to be demoted back down to Corporal. With intensive training in Close-Quarters-Combat and Demolition, he has since been reassigned to be part of the 19th Battalion on board the UNSC 5th of November.

Personal History: Most record of Michael's past were lost with the glassing of Arcadia. Born into a military household with three older brothers, one of which was in active service at the time. Mother died at birth, and it's believed that his father secretly blamed Michael. While rough on all of his sons, the Admiral was particularly demanding of his youngest, inflicting the sort of discipline that most Vets don't see. Michael often managed to achieve the goals set forth by his father, but never received praise for his accomplishments and was only pushed harder towards the next. It reached the point where Michael never even expected anything from his hard work, and viewed it only as what was expected of him. His brothers all lost their lives in the war against the Covenant, with his father dying at the hands of the enemy fleet not long after. Michael was pressed on only by his own sense of duty, which seemed to pick up the slack where his father left off. With the ODST came better training and better equipment, and a new minimum amount of efficiency he had to reach. It's been a whole year since Arcadia was glassed, but Choi seems completely unfazed or unwilling to allow any emotion to interfere with his goals. Though he didn't gain many fans amongst the other Helljumpers, he did earn a reputation for being an absolute badass. And with 6 black belts in Muay Thai, Jujitsu, Nunjitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kune Do, and three forms of Kung Fu as well as advanced self defense courses, no one can really dispute that reputation.

Michael was in the holo-deck, attempting to at least meet his old record in the hand-to-hand training sim. His last meal in the mess hall and the nausea from cryo sleep both danced together in his stomach, only adding to his lack of focus. His reflexes were still sluggish, and his movements were dulled. This was unacceptable. He swung, blocked, countered, and kicked at his luminescent blue enemies, all the while being in full combat gear. If he couldn't perform while being mission-ready, then he was useless. It was like having a full magazine without a gun. The mere thought of it made him mentally chastise himself. Though finally, during his second attempt at his record, the cryo-sickness finally began to fade from his actions, and his form tightened up considerably. The sim started, and three new holographic bodies appeared around him.

It was the advanced self defense simulation for ODST, featuring two attackers with knives, and one armed with a sidearm. Choi always kept the highest time. Always. Anything else was not acceptable. The blue man to his right stabbed at him with a knife, but with a lightning fast grab of the wrist, Choi was able to not only steal the weapon but dislocate his wrist and elbow. Flinging his new weapon in knife-assailant #2's shoulder, Choi focused on the critical part, the gun. The transparent pistol was now in his face, with the holograms finger on the trigger. Choi paused for only a nanosecond, before kicking the gun up and out of it's hands. Three sharp jabs to the abdomen, and back-hand smash, and a rising spike-kick later, assailant #3 was down and it's form faded away into nothingness. Two targets crippled, one down. Now it was just clean up.

Target #1 stood directly behind Choi, to which he replied with a spinning ax-kick. The heel of Choi's boot met his opponent's knee with a bone-shattering snap, forcing the leg to now bend backwards. Taking the moment to add a little flourish to his exhibition, Michael gave a fast elbow to his nose and followed through with a aerial round-house kick, which sent the bright-blue form sprawling to the floor. The sound of steel being pulled from flesh snapped his attention towards his final target, who had already begun a thrusting motion. Choi guided the holograms attack away from him, gripping the wrist tight before bring it's elbow to his knee. The crack of it's joints was satisfying, but not nearly as much as the stomach jab and the rising heel kick...... That in particular was the best. Raising himself with his left foot for added power, perfect placement under the opponent's jaw, and absolutely flawless kata. It was no wonder the body flew backwards nearly 8 feet.

Taking in several deep breathes to wind down, Choi finally looked at his time. His record of 0:14:32 stood at the top, and his new time appeared next to it. 0:15:21. "Unacceptable. Prepare new simulation." he braced himself in preparation for the new run, but was cut off by the blaring of alarms. "WARNING: Hull breach. Repeat, hull breach. Sectors A-3 through A-5, evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. Initializing lock down." Those words appeared in large holographic letters all over the holo-deck, and Michael raced to get fully loaded. It looked like he might get his next run, but it wouldn't be a simulation.

Choi raced through the halls like a track-star, unfazed that he carried nearly eighty pounds of equipment on him. The halls rattled and shook, pieces falling from the ceiling. It was getting bad. He rounded a corner and skidded to a stop at the beeping from his wrist-mounted PDA. The order to evacuate was just given, and the lead drop-pod just signaled it's locator. Here Michael thought he was just on his way to report to his CO for orders, but apparently he had to get off this ship. Like...... now. Choi felt something strange. At first, it was just like he was leaning a little too far forward, then a lot too far. As he nearly tumbled and fought to regain balance, he could feel that gravity was changing. Things started sliding past him, and soon he began sliding down the gradually steepening metal floor. The AGG was apparently fighting against the gravitational pull of the planet for control, and was losing. Choi was now in full tumble, bouncing and kicking off walls and doorways while slamming into others as he fell towards his goal. The door at the end of the hall led to the starboard side "Helljumper's Lounge".

He slammed back-first into the sealed door, but the pain was forgotten in an instant the moment he saw the large, steel section of the ceiling come unhinged at the far end of the hall. The massive and undoubtedly heavy sheet of metal smashed and clanged it's way towards him. Slamming his hand on the door release, Choi swung like a gymnast from the door frame and felt the rush of the wind coming from the object which threatened to end his life. He grasped onto the edge of one of the steel beams which reinforced the ceiling of the lounge, and by dropping down to the one below him, slowly lowered himself towards one of the pods. He leaped, grasping on to the edge and flinging his body into the open pod. Instinct replaced thought as he strapped himself in and initiated the drop sequence. His fingers rapidly tapped against the keypad as the large door hissed and sealed shut, it's glass window being covered by a thick blast shield. He could feel himself being lowered into launch-ready position. The light above him flicked on green, and that was his cue. His fist slammed the release, and he was jettisoned into the Great Nowhere of the stars.

The roar of the thrusters was loud, almost deafening, and the G's as they directed his pod towards the locator beacon like a homing missile was enough to make most men lose their lunch. Choi just closed his eyes and took deep, steady breathes. His mind drifted away into a meditative state. There was really nothing he could do now, and soon all the noises, motions, and even the feel of his combat gear in the cramped pod just faded away. Outside, his pod was glowing white hot as flames seared up the sides. The atmosphere was not going to be kind. Internal alarms sounded as the temperature rose steadily. However the only thing that brought Choi back to reality was when his pod made contact with a rock formation, skipping off it's surface and spiraling through the air. The side of the drop pod had caved in, smacking him in the side of the head and leaving a visible dent in his helmet. Choi's mind swam as he could feel blood trickling down his cheek. Finally the nightmarish ride ended with him crashing to a halt, and losing consciousness on impact.

His eyes glazed open for only a moment, taking in the surface of the alien world and blurred bits of movement outside his pod before the darkness once again enveloped him. His last conscious thought was going back to something his Drill Instructor had said many years ago.

"Jumping feet first into hell isn't your job......

Making sure it's crowded when you get there is....."
