Personality: it's hard to give personality to someone who really doesn't have one. Do to a childhood filled with ridiculously high expectations and virtually no praise, Michael is always a serious man to a fault. Completely swallowed with self-enforced discipline, he sees anything that is less than outstanding as unacceptable, whether it be the the performance of others or himself. Often seen as joyless and emotionless, as he never laughs, smirks, giggles, bitches, argues, yells, or even smiles. Very few troopers respect him for his near robotic way of following orders to a T. His superiors, however, seem to adore him as he fulfills objectives well beyond expectations with no question and any assorted BS. Choi has always been the voice of reason and duty, never wasting time with meaningless grudges, childish competitions, hatred towards the enemy, or even mourning his fellow soldiers who died in combat. It's always mission priority. This is what led to his last CO, who was of the more Gung-Ho sort, referring to him as Mr. Ray-of-freaking-sunshine, and the name stuck. To this day, people still call him Michael "Sunshine" Choi. His military record is nearly flawless with one exception. A flaw even his own father couldn't break him of. No matter what, Choi simply can not bring himself to take orders from an idiot. He may be extremely disciplined and dutiful, but he's not mindless. This unwillingness to take orders from Officers he views as clearly unfit to give commands has caused some issues in the past. But then.... it's really hard to argue with his results.
Military History: His father, Admiral Johnathon Mung Choi, is a decorated and very well respected member of the UNSC Fleet Command, and as such has always had high expectations for his sons to carry on his military legacy. Though his youngest son may have caught the blunt of it. Choi was schooled in a UNSC Military Institute on Arcadia before being promptly thrown into Boot Camp the moment he hit the age requirement. He was ruled to be an outstanding young recruit, and was on a tack course for full deployment in a few years. However, at the age of 14, his father and brothers were KIA in the Battle for Arcadia, making him an orphan of war. With only the military to take care of him, he was still dead-set for service. Unofficially, his impressive physical condition made him a candidate for the Spartan III program, but unfortunately the program required that he be an orphan when he was 6-8. With an extremely impressive background and a history of multiple martial arts and infiltration tactics, taught by his father, Michael was one of the few people to be plucked directly out of training to be part of the ODST. With first combat encounter at 18, he proved to be a prime example of a soldier, adhering to every expectation his commanding officers had of him. Years of combat have now made him into a hardened soldier, with vast amounts of experience under his belt and a very impressive record. He was given his own squad when he was 25, but a matter of disobeying his CO caused him to be demoted back down to Corporal. With intensive training in Close-Quarters-Combat and Demolition, he has since been reassigned to be part of the 19th Battalion on board the UNSC 5th of November.
Personal History: Most record of Michael's past were lost with the glassing of Arcadia. Born into a military household with three older brothers, one of which was in active service at the time. Mother died at birth, and it's believed that his father secretly blamed Michael. While rough on all of his sons, the Admiral was particularly demanding of his youngest, inflicting the sort of discipline that most Vets don't see. Michael often managed to achieve the goals set forth by his father, but never received praise for his accomplishments and was only pushed harder towards the next. It reached the point where Michael never even expected anything from his hard work, and viewed it only as what was expected of him. His brothers all lost their lives in the war against the Covenant, with his father dying at the hands of the enemy fleet not long after. Michael was pressed on only by his own sense of duty, which seemed to pick up the slack where his father left off. With the ODST came better training and better equipment, and a new minimum amount of efficiency he had to reach. It's been a whole year since Arcadia was glassed, but Choi seems completely unfazed or unwilling to allow any emotion to interfere with his goals. Though he didn't gain many fans amongst the other Helljumpers, he did earn a reputation for being an absolute badass. And with 6 black belts in Muay Thai, Jujitsu, Nunjitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kune Do, and three forms of Kung Fu as well as advanced self defense courses, no one can really dispute that reputation.
