Introduction

Ten years ago, a mysterious spatial anomaly known as "Heaven's Gate" appeared in South America, shortly followed by the opening of "Hell's Gate" in Tokyo altering the sky and wreaking havoc on the landscape. The real stars disappeared, replaced by false stars. During this time, people possessing various special abilities emerged, each capable of different supernatural feats - these are known as Contractors. Each Contractor has a corresponding fake star, which reacts to their activities. As such, Contractors are usually identified by their star's Messier catalogue number. Kept secret from the masses, these individuals are known to murder in cold blood, smothering unnecessary emotions with logic and rationality. Their incredible abilities, however, are gained at the cost of their humanity - Contractors are thus named because of an involuntary compulsion to "pay the price" each time their power is used, which can range from eating particular foods and completing meaningless tasks, to self-harm and changing their bodies in peculiar ways. Various nations and organizations around the world train and utilize Contractors as spies and assassins, resulting in violent battles for valuable objects and information.
Following the disastrous Heaven's War, the United States lost its dominant position as a superpower to a mysterious organization named the Syndicate.

Contractors are individuals who have gained superhuman powers due to the appearance of the Hell's Gate and Heaven's Gate. Known Contractors have a very wide array of powers, and each Contractor appears to have a power unique to him or herself. When a Contractor's powers are used, his or her eyes glow red and a blue glow occasionally surrounds its body. This phenomenon is called Lancelnoptchrotron radiation.
The existence of Contractors is kept a secret from the general public by most governments around the world, but they are well-known to the higher echelons of society and in the criminal underworld. Contractors possess two other traits that give them a rather sinister reputation: the need to perform Obeisance, which is a bizarre, obsessive compulsive "payment" for the use of their powers, and a generally pragmatic, logical world view. This is described by the Contractors themselves as a lack of emotion in general, but not much evidence exists to verify this claim. Many Contractors exhibit at least some forms of emotion, including love, joy, guilt, and sorrow.
Later in the series it is explicitly revealed that Contractors are fully capable of experiencing emotions, but that those feelings do not play a prominent role in their thought processes. They are described as being totally rational, and totally amoral. The general rules seems to be that they feel no guilt, and they cannot form or retain social bonds. A normal Contractor cares, in essence, only about their own well-being, and everything is reduced to a cost/benefit analysis: Any other issues like laws, emotions, or the question of the sanctity of human life are irrelevant.
How a person becomes a Contractor hasn't been revealed. Shion Pavlichenko was born as contractor, and Suou became one after she absorbed Hei's powers, and, in the Darker than Black: Shikkoku No Hana manga, a character named Harvest has the ability to make people Contractors, but all other Contractors, such as Tanya, have become what they are via unknown means. In Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden it is revealed that Contractors are defects that emerge when humans are unable to become Dolls.

The Evening Primrose is an organization that's public objective is to reveal the existence of Contractors to the public and given then a status as a new race. Their real objective, though, was to stop the Syndicate's plan to obliterate all Contractors. They are an organization made up of only dolls and Contractors.
The Syndicate is introduced as a mysterious underground organization with no apparent objective. Its operatives work with both Contractors and Dolls to achieve their objectives, and even have access to ME technology in order to erase sightings of their affairs from witness' minds. It declares to be looking for stabilizing the planet's status and destroying the Hell's Gate.
Pandora (Physicalquantity Alternation Natural Deconstruction Organized Research Agency) is a research facility dedicated to studying the phenomena of Hell's Gate. Paranormal phenomena akin to ghosts are not uncommon here due to the lab's close proximity to the gate. PANDORA has a heavily armed security force, consisting of armed soldiers possibly of various nationalities and armored vehicles, meant to protect its facilities and personnel.
MI-6 looked at first to be investigating the Syndicate, and assisting the Japanese police force in anyway they could to bring down the Syndicate. However they were secretly in allegiance with the Syndicate, and looked to help them to annihilate the Contractors.

Oh my.. That's rather frightening. (Oh and I love doggies! ^ ^ I want a great dane!) Ah, my attic's too small (it's split into two's) and the entrance is on top of the ceiling. If it suddenly opens i'm out of there!

You think it's dark in your room, it's 00:17 over here and it's just me and my girlfriend (plus her two giant rodent like dogs) in this house and I could swear I heard the attic opening creaked open a few moments ago but ai haven't dared left the room.
