B A C K S T O R Y.
Eilidh MacLeod comes from a long line of witches and wizards (with some muggles thrown in here and there) who inhabited the Isle of Skye. The Hebridean island has a rich magical history, with a high population of different magical creatures. The family lived on the island for centuries, even as it became more and more populated by muggles. They just adapted and blended in with the non-magical folk, living a double life. They had manage to remain on the island even through the Clearences (though magic may have been involved with that). About a hundred years before Eilidh was born, her ancestors had opened an inn that had catered to both magical and muggle tourists on the island.
Eilidh was raised at this inn. Her father, Hamish, had taken it over four years before she was born. Her mother, Rhona, was one of the magical tourists staying at the inn when she had met Hamish. She had originally been from Lewis, one of the Outer Hebridean Islands. She supposed to be there for a week to see the fairies, kelpies, and selkies, but she never left. Two years later, Eilidh was born. Ruth made her appearance about a year and a half later. The children had a happy, but unique childhood. They were raised speaking Scottish Gaelic, a dying, but culturally significant language, in the home. The children helped their parents with the inn. Specifically, Eilidh would help teach guest the dances and Ruth would play the fiddle with the band at the ceilidhs they would host for the tourists.
It was evident from an early age that Eilidh was a witch, like her parents. Her first occurrence of accidental magic came at three years old. She was accompanying her father on a tour and she was climbing a rock structure and slipped. Instead of falling and getting hurt, she floated down like she was a feather. Ruth was a different story. She had never shown any instance of magic and by the time she was nine, the family started to suspect that she was a squib. However, this never mattered to them. They lived amongst muggles and acted as them in part of their life. They just accepted that she would be living a life that was typical of a muggle rather than a life typical of a witch. Once Ruth did not receive her Hogwarts letter, Eilidh started calling Ruth her "squibling". Both the girls laughed about it and the name has since stuck.
Once Eilidh went to Hogwarts, she grew into her independence. The Sorting Hat did not take long to place her into Gryffindor house where she immediately started to make friends. While she missed home, she was excited to finally be learning the magic she had seen from her parents growing up. She couldn't wait to show Ruth everything that she learned and to hear about everything Ruth was learning at muggle school. Despite the different paths the sisters were on, they were still very close and held no resentment towards each other. They exchanged letters weekly. Eilidh couldn't wait to go home on school holidays and help out around the inn so she could spend time with Ruth.
At Hogwarts, she did okay academically. She knew that she was going to take over the inn after her parents (which she actually looked forward too), so she doesn't worry about having impressive grades for a specific career path. So, she did her school work, but she never really went above the bare minimum. However, once it was revealed that Voldemort had not killed the Chosen One and he has returned to finish the job, Eilidh suddenly felt woefully unprepared for what could happen in the future. All Eilidh knows is that she needs to prepare to fight for what she believes in. Darkness is brewing in Hogwarts as well as the rest of the Wizarding World and she does not want to pretend otherwise.
