With no support at home, Santiago fell into a bad group of boys. He was always in detention for fights and disrespecting his teachers. He didn't care about what people thought of him. His mother helped him get his anger out through art. Despite not being able to buy art supplies, he learned to draw by scratching rocks on concrete. His passion for art did not diminish his desire to escape his life of poverty. He got a chance at finer things when his mother became a maid for a wealthy family. His mother would enlist him to help with gardening and the more physical labor. Looking at all the beautiful objects, Santiago wished for a life such as this. He knew if he worked hard and actually tried, he could be able to have this. His friends gave him a hard time for falling for the rich life. They convinced him that all these people simply got lucky and didn't earn any of their money. Santiago began to resent the rich.
While working, Santiago met Caroline. She would supply him with lemonade and snacks as she tried to talk to him. He couldn't stand her neediness. He remained civil to her for his mother's sake, but would ignore her as often as he could. One day, Santiago accidently saw her father smack her across the face. He hid before he could be spotted by the father, but Caroline saw him. He felt sympathy for her, remembering his dad. A budding relationship began to spark between them. Santiago knew her father would never approve of him so he worked harder in school, hoping maybe showing he was college bound would impress him. Santiago was ranked number one in his class. He remained friends with his troublemaker buddies, but steered clear of possible detention situations. Unfortunately, he'll never have the chance to prove anything while behind bars.
