The youngest prince of the Sie, intrigued by humans.
Cael is fascinated by humans, specifically their relationships, and of course their fears. He doesn’t understand why they are so afraid of darkness, so terrified of the Sie. He can sense their curiosity, humans want to know what lurks in the shadows, but fear holds them back. He wants to convince a human to embrace the darkness, so that he can get close enough to learn about them. He has a very warped sense of humor, and isn’t very skilled at hiding his emotion. He can get violent when angry, and has trouble feeling remorse.
The youngest of the royal children, Cael found castle life incredibly dull. With his parents consent, he decided to explore the human world. He was warned not to show himself to anyone, and if he stumbled across a Seer to use glamour. Cael was fascinated by humanity, especially by other children. They were always smiling and laughing for no reason. In the Kingdom of the Secret Soul, the only games were for sport and usually violent. Here there were games of tag and make believe, hurting others was looked down upon. Sometimes the young Cael would go home and try to play with other Sie children, but they would only tease him.
They may not be able to part the mist as clearly as a Seer, but human children are eager to believe in everything, which causes them to catch glimpses of other realms. Unfortunately human children are also easily frightened. Since they weren’t gifted, they couldn’t see Cael clearly, but they saw movement in the shadows, flashes of black eyes and glowing skin. That was enough to send them screaming.
One day in late fall, Cael stumbled across a young girl wearing a poodle skirt and humming to herself, she was alone and dancing with a teddy bear. He felt a strange pull towards the girl, as if he was meant to be there with her. He watched her for a while, and was surprised to find she could see him. His pale grayish-green skin, pointed ears, and black eyes, didn’t frighten her away. When he spoke she saw his teeth were pointed and flinched, but still did not run.
He remembered he was supposed to glamour himself, and asked who she wanted to see most. The girl responded by holding up a picture of a skinny man wearing a leather jacket and tight pants, with his long black hair greased back. Cael stared at the picture taking in every detail, from the cigarette behind the man’s ear to the laid back way he carried himself.
He closed his eyes and when he opened them, he was an eight-year-old human boy dressed as a greaser from the 1950’s, though he wasn’t an exact replica of the photo. His facial structure was still the same as it had been in his true form, high cheekbones and sharp features. His eyes were now a vibrant green, and his hair a very dark brown. The cigarette behind his ear was made of candy, and he smiled showing the girl his teeth were no longer sharp. She introduced herself as Harper, and they became fast friends.
They played all the games Cael hadn’t been able to, Harper especially loved to play pretend because Cael could change his appearance to match whatever picture she showed him. Sometimes she asked odd questions, like where his parents were and if he’d ever had a birthday party. She looked concerned when Cael answered honestly that his parents were underground, and he didn’t care about birthdays.
Months passed and eventually Cael’s parents grew suspicious of his frequent visits to the human world. When he came home with a small scruffy teddy bear, a birthday present from Harper, they banned him from going above ground until it was time to find his soul match.
Now years have passed, and the time has come to return. Cael plans to search for Harper, certain that she is his soul match. Even if she isn’t, Cael wants to see her again. He plans to enter the human realm through the door he last saw her behind. His glamour is the first he ever used, so he looks like a modern 1950’s greaser. He hopes his appearance will help Harper recognize him faster. Honestly, Cael is not too concerned with becoming King, sure he wouldn’t mind, but it’s not his priority.
