she took his kiss and made it music
twisted memories forming aching
melodies - sharp, sweet, longing
her fingers on the keys
like breathes across his skin –
Music held its own magic; the ability to soothe wounds and clear minds when played right, to transport the music lover to another world. Silvia's mother left when she was barely seven, chased from the home by the curses of her inflexible husband. A cheater, her father claimed, caught beneath the sheets with one of his closest friends. Silvia composed soft medleys to distract herself from the lose and confusion, played through the grief of losing her mother to another family. Later, when her first lover would attempt to end his life, she would again turn to music to ease her heart, crafting healing balms from the keys of her piano.
Silvia's maintained her father's schedule out of habit, rather than appreciation for the strict regime. Guilt collects within the young musician if she falters, the harsh words of her father ringing like ghostly echoes in her ears whenever a day or more goes by where she's been absent from the piano. So too does her guilt push her to long hours in the library, bent over textbooks and notes as she studies. Even if the outside calls; her feet itching to walk across summer grass, skin aching for a moment in the sun, she persists. Discipline has moulded her; formed her into a creature of habit and schedule.
She used to envy the freedom of others; the independence and courage some possess that allow them to glide through life without the ever-present pressure to conform, to break away from their responsibilities - however momentarily - and live. Perhaps she might still watch on jealously, had not Rafael taught her to allow herself some happiness. They first met when she was barely eleven. He, three years her senior and a student of her father, would pretend to be a ghost and jump out at her whenever he visited. He showed her happiness, and she declared her love for him at sixteen.
Threats of drawing out a shotgun were thrown at Rafael when they revealed their relationship a year later to Silvia's father. He did not approve, and no amount of arguing could convince him otherwise. The following attempt Rafael made on his life saw him seeking professional help, encouraged by Silvia. Though their relationship eventually dissolved, she has always maintained a close friendship with her first love. She defends him vehemently still, should ever a passing comment injure his character. The young woman also attempts to remember the lessons he taught her; to pull herself from her studies and seek enjoyment in her surroundings.
When her work is done, or when her hands ache from too long spent at the piano, Silvia throws off the crushing weight of her guilt and allows herself to breathe. Her responsibilities may never remain buried for long - the support she must offer her siblings, the lifeline she remains for Rafael, her own need to continue seeking perfection in her studies - but she attempts to mimic the effortless freedom of others. A gulp of fresh air, the passing greeting of a friend, or hushed exchange of gossip with another. Beyond her studies, when she allows it, Silvia can be vibrant and warm, a stark contrast to the fierce intensity shown to her studies.
Or, perhaps that intensity is merely directed elsewhere when not at her books, for Silvia seems to live with that same, constant fire burning within her. She pushes herself forward, seeks out friendships with those she esteems, and shines brightest when receiving praise. Affectionate and considerate with her friends, those tense shoulders might relax around those few who can make her laugh, bringing out a bright, uninhibited smile and revealing the inviting warmth beneath the surface intensity. Though her approval is not easily won, Silvia willing offers support and comfort to those close to her, offering advice when needed, a shoulder to lean on if required, or a soul to vent to when frustrations build up.
She'll defend herself and her friends vehemently, protective of all those she holds close. Sharp, unrelenting barbs may be released when she's antagonised. The composer has little patience for ignorance or idiocy, detests arrogance in others, and finds herself actively avoiding those specific individuals who she believes embodies any and all of these traits. Silvia claims it isn't envy which fuels her distaste for some, yet a certain jealousy does flow through the composer when she finds herself facing someone of greater talent than herself. A certain obstinate streak only furthers those rivalries, with Silvia often refusing to back down and admit she's at fault when it's called for. Instead, her distaste simmers, merely fuelling her own desire to succeed.
