"it's quiet uptown..."

History:
Elle was born in the heart of Brooklyn, New York to a poor young couple. Growing up the oldest of 4 she was given responsibility at a young age. Whether it be babysitting or cooking dinner for the night, Elle shined. As a child Elle strived at making her mother proud and taught her 2 younger sisters to do the same. The Peterson family lived in a 3 room apartment. Kept in tight quarters, Elle shared everything she owned with her sisters, it could be clothes, nail polish, or make up, they shared it all. Her brother, possibly the family favorite due to being the youngest of the four was often stuck in hand-me-downs. He got lots of winter jackets and jeans from his older sisters. Elle's father provided the income of the family, working as a night guard at a small bank in Brooklyn, while her mother waitressed part time during the day.

As Elle grew to be 18 years old, her father uncovered a secret to her. He had gotten hold of a family heirloom, a gold cross with blue jewels going up and down it, that was worth $50,000 alone. When the cross was flipped over, and a small latch was undone it opened up a compartment just large enough to fit a single folded piece of paper. On the piece of paper contained all the necessary information and codes to unlock a safe. Elle's father told her that the money in that safe could last a lifetime, and could fill all the needs they could ever think of. He also told her that all he had to do was sell the cross in order to get the money to fly to the safe, located Alsace, France. After that he then planned to buy back the cross.

As Mr. Peterson searched out the proper person to sell to over the span of 2 years, he came across the wrong group of people. When the realized the crosses worth, they threaten to take the life of each person in the Peterson's family if he didn't hand over the cross, with in that week. Instead of doing as told Mr. Peterson ran home and hid the cross. 3 days later, now 20 years old, Elle came home to an empty house, her family gone. Elle packed her things and left, aware of what her father had caused. She filed a missing persons case for every one of them and lived in shelters across the city, waiting. Several weeks later Elle concluded the fate of her family and set off to find and steal back the cross.

She nodded, laughing at the things Elle said. "Yeah, it was nice to have someone to remind you that you have an essay due. I've had to resort to setting daily reminders on my phone whenever I have an essay due, just so I won't have to pull an all-nighter to get it written," she said, laughing a little.

She shrugged at Elle's comments about the school. "It's got some of the best teachers in the country, that's for sure. But... it changed me. I moved to it halfway through a school year, and that half year was hell. My accent was rough, my clothes were all wrong, I was all wrong... But I learned what I needed to do to survive. I managed to change my accent in the space of a summer. I completely changed my wardrobe and spent hours marathoning the popular shows and reading the right things. And when I went back to school... I became one of them. It's like everyone's the popular kids." She laughed a little, glancing over at Elle. "And the worst part is, I don't regret it at all. I'm glad they changed me. Is that messed up or what?" She said, before opening the door and climbing out of the car. "Oh, grab my bag there, will you?"

Elle grabbed the bag and tossed it towards Abby. She pulled her own backpack over her shoulders and got out of the car. "I guess it's a different life, going to a school like that. Perfectly fine to like... I mean that's why it's still there." Elle shrugged walking through the parking lot to the diner's entrance. "I think we've become regulars at this place." She joked pulling the door open, a bell dinged softly. "But I'm glad high school is over." She added looking around the diner for the girl from last night. "I have to go to the restroom, get a table for us." Elle said seeking out the bathrooms location and heading towards it.

She laughed at Elle's comment about them becoming regulars, before nodding at Elle's request, sliding into a corner booth. She found herself watching the staff, keeping an eye out for the girl from the night before. She knew it was a little irrational- what were the chances of the girl being on again? And why did she even care?

Instead, she directed her attention to the menu, crossing her legs and keeping a hand on her handbag as she studied it.

As Elle was coming out of the bathroom her ID slipped from the side pocket of her backpack and fell to the ground. Unaware, Elle continued walking on trying to spot Abby. Suddenly someone came out from the kitchen, noticed Elle's ID on the ground and bent down to pick it up.

"Hey!" The person called to Elle and she quickly turned around. Much to her surprise it was the girl from last night. "You dropped your ID... Elle..." The girl said squinting down at the plastic card. "Oh gosh thank you" Elle blushed taking the ID back and pushing it into her pocket. "You were in her last night weren't you, with that girl?" The waitress spoke waving her hand in Abby's direction. "Yeah... we came back to grab breakfast. We're driving to the mountains today..." Elle rambled nervously. "Oh well that's fun..." The waitress pulled out her notepad and began scribbling. She ripped the paper away from the pad and folded it. "My names Alex, call me some time." She winked at Elle and slipped the paper into Elle's pocket so that it sat next to her ID. With that Alex turned back towards the kitchen and after a few seconds Elle walked back to Abby, sliding in across from her. She crossed her arms on the table silently.

Abby glanced up just as Elle emerged from the bathroom, and sat up a little straighter. She watched as the waitress from the previous night approached Elle and started talking to her. Abby forced herself to glance away, suppressing a bit of a grin. She looked back just in time to see the waitress slipping Elle her number. Elle rested her chin on her hand as Elle walked back, still grinning.

"I'm just saying, the chances of that happening were so small that I'm starting to think that it was meant to be," she said jokingly. She leaned in a little. "Do we still need to convince her that we're a thing? Should I act heart-broken and storm out? If we do that we can go get breakfast at McDonald's instead," she said teasingly, still smirking.

Elle rolled her eyes at Abby as she slide into her seat. "That is unnecessary." She giggled and opened up the menu in front of her. She scanned in quietly glancing up every few seconds. "Have you ever been to the mountains before?" Elle asked. An older waitress came over and pored them both coffee. Elle put three french vanilla shots into hers. She set the menu down, having decided and looked across the table at her friend.

Abby nodded in response to Elle's question, stirring some sugar into her coffee. "Once. Myself and a few friends went camping. It was awesome- we spent the whole day hiking, and then sat around the campfire and gossiped for half the night, then played truth or dare for the rest of the night. I don't think we slept at all," she said, taking a mouthful out of her coffee. "We'll have to go hiking while we're there, burn off all of this food," she remarked, grinning at Elle.

When the older waitress came back Elle ordered herself eggs and toast. She waited for Abby to order as well and then continued the conversation. "Yeah that sounds great! I've never camped in the woods before, but I 'd imagine it to be pretty fun. Like the movies." She rested her elbows on the table and pulled the coffee cup closer to herself. She blew the steam away and took a sip. "What are you studying in college?" She asked suddenly, thought purely out of curiosity.

Abby laughed at Elle's response. "You obviously haven't seen many horror movies, then," she remarked. When the waitress returned, she ordered the "Chef's Special Granola". As tempting as the cooked food was, she wasn't in the mood for it.

"Forensics," she answered with a grin. "I've wanted to be a cop since forever, but when I learned what forensic teams actually do, I knew exactly where I wanted to go. My dad tried to encourage me to be a lawyer, but that was nowhere near as interesting," she continued, taking a mouthful out of her coffee. "I'm hoping that ratting out my gang will get me some brownie points when I graduate," she added. "What about you? What would you like to be?"

Elle raised an eyebrow at Abby's answer. She hadn't expected something so intense. Although given the last 24 hours was it really a surprise? Forensics seemed like a really cool thing, that would take a long time to master.

"I don't really know what I want to be. I haven't got the chance to think about it. Which is fine, I'm in no rush." She shrugged. "After high school I kept working as a waitress where I had been and picked up extra hours. College isn't really part of my family I guess. My parents never went anyways..." She added fingering threw the small cup of flavor shots on the table. She picked out a vanilla one and added it to her coffee.

"Yeah, not going to college was never an option for me. Well, it might have been once, but not any more. Not when I attended Brook Hill, you know?" She said, laughing a little. She raised her eyebrow at Elle's addition to her coffee. "Okay, your coffee is at least 20% flavouring by now. I feel a lot better about my two sugars," she teased lightly. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the waitress from before watching them.

"Your girlfriend is watching us," she added, still grinning.

Elle nodded along as Abby spoke and giggled at her remark. "Hey I like the taste of vanilla." She shrugged and looked over her shoulder to Alex. She turned back quickly. "Nothing's going to happen, I'm telling you." Elle insisted. She could smelled the food as is was bright over to their table. Eggs and toast was a pretty good way to start the day, at least in Elle's opinion.

"You know we should probably get going soon." Elle began placing a napkin on her lap and digging into the food. "I don't know about your gang, but mine have proven to be quite relentless." She said softer.

She laughed, shrugging a little. "I'm just saying, if you want to go there, that's fine by me," she remarked, holding up her hands. She started into her food as soon as it hit the table. It really was good- packed with fruit and perfectly crunchy. She nodded at Elle's comment.

"Yeah- the ones who would come after me would be pretty damn ruthless," she replied, barely audible. She hadn't heard anything, which could prove to be a good or a bad thing. But either way, she needed to distance herself from them. It was better to be safe than sorry.

The food tasted so great Elle wished she had an endless supply to herself. Maybe coming back to this diner wouldn't be such a bad idea. There was good food, a cute waitress, and probably a job opportunity if she wanted. Elle decided to throw the idea in the back of her head for know and not let Abby have the satisfaction of knowing she could see herself date that girl.

"Can we get some coffee to go?" Elle asked Abby. "And more vanilla shots?" She added, pulling out her wallet.

As skeptical as she'd been about the "Chef's Special", there was no denying that it was good. Once she was finished, she was full without feeling bloated, and knew that it was definitely going to keep her going until lunch, if not beyond. At Elle's request, she nodded. "Sure thing. Take as many as you want, I'll look the other way," she said, grinning and winking at the other girl. She went up to the counter to pay for her food and a caramel latte. It was the girl that had had her eye on Elle that served her- but their interaction was nothing out of the ordinary. Her coffee in hand, she pulled her bag onto her shoulder to wait for Elle.

"Come on let's go before she makes another move." Elle said giggling and bumping into Abby. They headed for the car and Elle slid into the passengers, already growing accustomed to feel of the car. She liked it though, the seat was soft and she didn't feel incredibly cramped.

"To the moutains!" Elle exclaimed pointing at the road.

"Okay, I'm taking a break. I seriously need to stretch my legs," she said, signalling and pulling in. They were in the middle of nowhere, seemingly, but strategically placed picnic benches betrayed that illusion. She pulled in a few feet from one of them and climbed out of the car, stretching a little. "So, welcome to the mountains. If we keep driving, we'll probably find a town or something where we can stay the night but also see the sights. Unless you feel like sleeping in the-" She stopped talking, something cutting her off. She could have sworn that she'd heard a branch break, a footstep. She held a finger to her lips, listening to the silence. But, in hindsight, it was probably just an approaching car. Still, she reached into the car, retrieved her gun, and belted the holster around her waist.

"I think we're good. Sorry, old habits die hard and all that," she said.

Elle smiled as the car finally came to a halt. Seeing the mountains around her was incredible, but actually getting out of the car and stepping onto the soil felt so good. The air was thinner up here, and slightly colder. The view in all directions made up for the temperature though, it was breath taking. When Abby quieted Elle before she could speak and reached for her gun Elle stiffened up. However, a large truck drove by seconds later and Elle's mind was put at ease.

"We're fine don't worry." Elle said patting the other girl on the shoulder and wandering in towards the trees. "I'd say we've got like 4 hours till dark right? Plenty of time, before we have to drive somewhere with more civilization!" She continued to talk although facing away from Abby.

As the truck drove past, Abby exhaled a little, feeling her shoulders relax. But even so, she kept her gun at her side. She reached into the car and pulled on a jacket. "Hiking sounds good," she said, starting to walk to catch up with Elle. "So, which way do you want to go? Follow a path or risk wandering through the woods?" She asked, glancing around. She still felt a little uneasy, but had to tell herself to just keep moving. It would pass with time.

"We don't want to get to crazy, especially with this being my first time." Elle responded stepping out of the brush and onto a gravel path. "I honestly don't know what poison ivy looks like, or how to tell if a snake is venomous... So path it is!" She smiled breathing in the cool air.

They continued walking on getting further in, to the point where Abby's car was no visible. Elle had picked about a dozen leaves off the trees as she passed them and kicked nearly a thousand rocks. With her backpack pulled tightly to herself by the straps she ran ahead of Abby exclaiming "Oh take a picture of me, I'll face this way, so it's just my back." She stopped about 20 feet ahead of the other girl and facing away from her yelled back "Does this look g-" Elle's sentence was cut short, when she heard yells, only a few, but the voices were deep and they seemed to be on the same path.

Elle looked to Abby quickly with slight panic, hoping for the same reassurance she had provided to the other girl earlier before that it was nothing.
