Vivian Bernard

"Let's focus on surviving for today"

a character in “Life in the Suburbs”, as played by Chappyfan

Description

Image

Name: Vivian Bernard
Age: 16

Description: Vivian has long, unruly black hair that ends at mid-back, with a single electric blue stripe on the right side. She carries a panda beanie with her, and wears straight-legged jeans with simple black vans. She has on a white shirt with a pink writing that says 'Cool story bro'. She stands at 5'7 and has gazelle like legs, and has a slim figure. She is very athletic, and is best as a runner. She has murky hazel eyes.

Personality

She has always been a bit competitive as a young child, and now. She is ready for any challenge, and hates to admit defeat to anything. When she's not doing sports, she is actually pretty mellow and having a care-free atittude. It's easy to rile her up though; she isn't the smartest, especially in math. But she is good when it comes to sociology, and how people behave. Vivian is also a natural leader, and is quite outgoing, but can be shy at times too. When she's alone, her walls seem to fall down and a softer personality creeps out. She rarely shows anyone this side, but she cares deeply for people. Even if they are just strangers. She can also get very tired easily, but is a very heavy sleeper. At times Vivian is very dense, and can't read the air. She judges people on how they mostly look, and can be very blunt.

Equipment

Vivian doesn't like carrying anything to small because she will ultimately end up losing it. So she carries around a rusted crowbar, but if she is without her weapon, she will usually use anything around her. She prefers blunt objects though.

History

Vivan was a tomboy, she wasn't interested in boys so much, and was very independent. She played sports, and was a track star. At the time she lived with two brothers, and her father. When she was eight, her mother died in a car accident. Her youngest brother took over all her duties, and from that day Vivian refused to ever cry. She made a promise to be strong, and that's exactly what she did. When the virus struck, her dad was the first to go. Promising to stay together, her two brothers stayed inside the house while she always ventured outside. One day when she woke up in the night, she saw a letter from her older brother saying he went out alone. Shortly her younger brother went to try and find him. Sick of staying alone, she went out hoping they were alright. But she had to think about herself too. The virus hadn't changed her much, the only thing is that she thinks of others before herself now. Guilt ridden about leaving her brothers alone.

So begins...

Vivian sat near a tree, the leaves long had fallen off, and the grass looked dead. She vaguely remembered that it used to look nice, but obviously it wasn't anymore. Stretching, her hazel eyes wandered around her. Pulling herself up, she dusted off her pants and watched in the distance. She didn't know where she was going, but she had to keep moving. As she walked the street, she began to notice a huge structure. The mall, she thought getting closer. It seemed like people were going in and out. Curious as to why, she ventured inside, a little cautiously. Entering, she watched as a dust cloud drew closer.

"Whoa, how did I not notice that," she questioned outloud. Her hand pressed against the entrance as more people went in. At least she wasn't alone right now, but with how things looked. She couldn't tell who was going to be friend or foe. Honestly, she didn't care. As long as she survived for today.

Hannah looked around as they stopped walking and Max took the bag off her shoulder, pulling out a long sleeve shirt and using it to dry off some of the blood from his sister. "How old is Dylan?" He asked at Hannah started to push him away. She hated when he fussed over her. She was older than him, and sometimes he thought he forgot that. Hannah looked over as she heard a girl say, Whoa, how did I not notice that, but what she was talking about, Hannah didn't know.

Vivan heard a crashing sound, but wasn't to curious. It was probably her imagination, she always had an active one. As she moved away from the door, she watched as some people came from another area. She figured this place must be bigger than it looked, as she moved closer to them trying not to be suspicious, she heard the name Dylan. It didn't sound familiar to her, but she watched as the girl with blue hair described him. A gun, huh, she thought frowning. Vivian wished she had a weapon like that.

Walking around, she sighed hopelessly. She would have to find someone who knew where she was. So she went up to the girl with blue hair.

"Hey," almost forgetting her manner, "I ugh mean. Where am I exactly?"

"Dylan? Oh he's 16. how he manages to live with the responsibility he has is beyond me." Amber watched as the guy pulled out a shirt and started wiping the blood off of his sister. Amber realized he must care a lot for her. "So you really take care of your sister then?" she said to the boy as he was wiping the blood onto a different shirt. Amber then heard a girl talking so turned around and saw that it was a girl who was asking her where she was. "Does she live here?" She thought to herself. "Oh hi you are in Southpark Mall. We are using this as a house slash hideout thingy. Do you live here? if not just follow me." Then she turned and carried on walking in the direction she thought Dylan would be.

Vivan stood a bit awkwardly as the trio started to talk. She was still there, and confused on what to do. She's never been close to other people, so she looked around the area in mild confusion. What time was it, it didn't matter right now she thought sighing. Turning her attention back to the blue haired girl, she watched as she started to cry. Taken slightly back she watched as she seemed to just dismiss it. She didn't know how people could cry so easily, as she watched as the girl began to walk up a flight of stairs she stood there unsure of what to do.

"Ugh....is it okay if I fallow you guys? Kinda don't know where I am right now."

Vivan watched as the girl Amber turned to stare at her. Annoyence obviously evident. She wasn't taken back by the rude comment, she could tell that she seemed upset still. "Thanks," she mumbled slowly walking up the stairs. She didn't want food, because she felt guilty from taking it from others. She could just raid a store or something, as she stopped to take a glance down below, she still saw more people. It almost seemed to multiply. Shaking her head, she dragged her hand across the hallway. Her eyes trying to adjust from what light she had.

It's been a while since she's been in the company of others. She tried not to scoff, enjoy her stay. She thought. "Well, thank you....." she mumbled. Not really sure if the girl heard her or not.

Dylan was pretty disgruntled and it was obvious that there was a great weight on his shoulders. He passed many groups of people on his way to the front doors, one of which had a girl who was bleeding from her stomach. They were dabbing at the wound with a shirt, but they didn't seem to be trying to stop the flow. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a whistle. He blew it loudly and waited for everyone's attention.

"First, I need everyone to stop running around like chickens with their heads cut off. We have a system for a reason people! If you are older than 13 grab a weapon from the armory and meet up at the entry ways. I need the sharpshooters up top asap. Anyone younger than 12 and their caretakers get to the basement doubletime!"

He looked at the group of four. He didn't really recognise any of them but that rarely mattered, it wasn't his job to keep track of everyone. He just had to keep them safe and fed. He bleww the whistle in three quick bursts and 3 girls, one who was 11 or so and two who were 17, ran up with first aid gear. He was glad that the older two had come, from the looks of the blood the girl that had been cut would deffinitely need their medical-class expertise.

"Fix her up please and then get to the basement."

After he finished that business he continued on towards the front doors without looking back. He shook his head as he began to rush, he was sure they were almost out of time.

(wow, you guys posted a lot.....so I'm gonna skip some of the details...)

Vivian looked around confused at what was going on. She hasn't fought anyone before, and she watched as everyone seemed to scatter about. Not sure of what to do she made sure she wasn't in the way. It seems like another gang was attacking the place. The leader, Dylan, shouting orders. She watched as Amber and the other girl disappeared, most likely to fight, she heard a soft plea of 'medic' and watched as the leader fell. If she kept standing there, she was sure to be swept up in all the chaos. Not like she wasn't already.

When the fighting in the front ended most of the guards headed towards the back to make sure that the bikers hadn't gotten in. As they ran through the mall they took out anyone who acted hostile to them and generally drove the few lucky bikers that had gotten in, back out. The two girls that had fixed up Hannah ran out with the messenger who had gone to get them when Max called for medics. They put Dylan on a cart and told Max that he should go fight the bikers, Dylan would be in good hands.

****************

The arrival of reinforcements to the back scared most of the remaining bikers off. All of the dead were taken off to be buried and all of the loot was taken to the armory. Any surviving gang members would be taken into custody for questioning, whenever Dylan got around to it, and the bikes were taken to the garage, where they kept all the cars that they could use. The battle was over, luckily, but everone was shaken up pretty bad with Dylan out of commission so some of his seconds called for a meeting in the main atrium.

Thank god the fightings over Vivian thought sighing in relief. She felt guilty because she didn't do anything. Looking towards the girl, her age she guessed, who saved her she couldn't help but smile. "Yeah....sorry about that, I wasn't sure of what to do." She didn't want to admit that she's never fought before, it's not that she lacked the instinct, she just wasn't sure of body movement. Sports was a lot more easier than this.

"Wow......a lot of them died," Vivian was slightly fazed, she's never seen a dead body. It was odd really, but she never questioned it. "Oh, I'm Vivian by the way. You?" She took a side glance as the leader, what was his name, Dylan? Was carted off.

Jennifer walked away from the coner she had dragged Vivian over too, then looked over at her, returning the smile. "Don't worry about it," she said to the girl, "couldn't just let you stand there and get hurt." She looked around at the damage that was done and the bodies that laid on the ground.

"Nice to meet you Vivian, my name is Jennifer, but you can call me Jenna if you'd like." The girl looked around some more, it was a good thing most everyone was undamaged from the battle, it was always horrible when people got hurt.

One of Dylan's lieutenants took out a maegaphone, one that they had saved and kept batteries for. It was only to be used for emergencies or special occassions, but after the attack and the leader being shot the entire mall was asking questions and getting riled up. They needed to keep everyone calm and under control. He sounded the megaphone's alarm so that he could get everone's attention.

"Everyone listen up! We need to get everything back to normal. Dylan is fine, the girls say that he just had a flesh wound. He'll be up and around by morning."

The crowd sent up a ragged applause before the lieutenant signaled them to quiet down.

"You all know how hard it is to survive, especially with other gangs attacking and stuff. We need volunteers to go on search and scrounge missions. We also need people to apply to be guards. We don't wanna let Dylan down right?"

The crowd gave random answers of agreement as people began to volunteer for different duties. New people were welcomed to sign up for residency and then were given jobs according to what they thought they were good at.

"Wow, well since that's over.......why don't we sign up," Vivian suggested. She wasn't to sure how long she was going to stay, but it seemed like they needed help. Looking around, she tried to find where everyone else seemed to be heading. Gesturing over to Jennifer she started to move. Stopping she saw a boy bloodied, but he seemed to have others surrounding him so she carried on. She wasn't good with taking care of people obviously because her brothers weren't with her anymore. That was beside the point though.

"So Jennifer.....are you looking after someone?" It seemed a bit out of place to ask, but Vivian was always curious by nature. Kicking a nearby rock, she stuffed her hands in her pockets. Her white hat now dusted with debris.

Sighing, Vivian signed up as a job as a caretaker. Ever since her brothers left she felt like she needed to redeem herself and what better way than to help others around who couldn't help themselves? Walking through the rushing crowd, she watched as more and more signed up. All for different reasons, but she couldn't help but feel some of them would be gone by tomorrow. She never was planning on staying long, but if she were to leave, where would she go? Shaking her head, she began to scavenge for some material that the place needed. The fight took a tole on the building and so they would have to fix it up. She was just glad that everything seemed less......chaotic, and more organized now.

"Sure.. why not," she said, following the girl, Vivian that is, when she had gestured over to her. Jennifer looked around at everything that had been destroyed in the utter chaos of battle. It wasn't unusuall for there to be damage to the building that a fight would be in, guns and such would do things like that. The girl raised her eyebrow at Vivian's question, though to her it seemd a little personal, but she decided to answer it anyway.

"I use to," Jennifer said, her head then slowly hanging down a little. It had been a few months since the death of her brother, and she still felt the pai and lonliness that came from it.

"How about you?" she question the girl, curious if she had someone to care for. Once they had made it to where everyone was signing up, she too sighed up for a job as well, volunteering for scavaniging. She planned on staying for a little while, help out where she could so the children in the group could survive the best they could.

Vivan looked at the ground, trying to see if there was anything they could use. Kicking away some pieces of rubble, she sighed. "Yeah, two brothers in fact. One was almost eighteen, the other was only ten........I don't know where they are." Inhaling deeply, she clenched her hands. "I was hoping to see them here, guess I was wrong," shrugging she continued to look at the ground. She was to preoccupied now in her mind so she decided to move away from everyone.

"I hope they're doing okay, but ever since they've left........it's been easier. Man, I must sound terrible for saying that," Vivian said laughing to ease the silence.

"No," she began to say, looking over at Vivian for a moment, "you don't sound as terrible as you think you do, in all honestly it's easier to take care of yourself in this world rather than yourself and others. You don't need to worry about feeding them, only yourself... thought I'm sure that sounds a lot more awful though." Jennifer laughed a little before placing her hand onto the girl's shoulder, giving her a friendly smile, "I'm sure they are fine though, if I've learned anything lately, is that when one has the will to survive, they certainly will." A small rock laid near her foot, she looked down at it before giving it a soft kick that caused it to roll away and away from her.

"I can't just sit aroun here anymore." Dylan said as he struggled against the nurses. "Let me up, I want to get back to work!"

The nurses pushed him down again and again but he persisted an eventually they just gave up. "Fine!" one of them yelled, "If you wanna get yourself killed, who am I to stop you?"

Dylan just grinned and got up out of bed. He staggered a bit as a wave of dizzyness washed over him but he took it in stride and walked out into the hallways of the Mall.

He approached two girls about his age talking to eachother near the volunteer line that was surprisingly long to Dylan. "Are you guys going to volunteer?" He asked. "i'm surprised to see this many people."

Vivian let out a small laugh, she was hoping that the girl would have said it was bad. Thinking like that was selfish of her, and her parents would have been severely disappointed. Giving out a languid sigh, she stretched her arms. Running a pale hand through her knotted hair. Where's a hairbrush when you need one? Letting her eyes skim the volunteer line, Vivian was slightly taken back by the how long it was to wait.

"Are you guys going to volunteer?" That's why she was still here.

Turning around, she found the leader of the makeshift group. He looked like hell in all honesty. Smiling, she nodded, "Yeah, I'm glad a lot of people want to help......I'm Vivian by the way," she then gestured to the girl next to her, "And this is Jennifer."

Dylan steched out his right hand to shake theirs and winced as his shoulder sent up a wave of pain. He switched to his left. "It's very nice to meet you two. I'm Dylan, but I guess you might've known that. It's really great to see so many people willing to help. God knows we need all the help we can get." He smiled a bit as he looked at the long line. He remembered when there were just six of them against the world. It seemed strange to think that he could be the leader of so many people.
