Lila

Setting

There's nothing particularly ominous about this place; it looks like a nice place. There's a path, trees, some houses near by...not exactly how you'd picture the end of the Test Reality. Still, there's a big ol' invisible wall just chillin' here...

There was a brief, almost suspicious pause.

"...I-I'm afraid I am. I apologize, I'll call you later! Bye!" Vitara spoke, sounding quite rushed. Peylet looked a little concerned, wondering what Vitara could possibly be panicking about.

"That's...rather odd, if I do say so myself. It sounded like something was wrong." Captain Obvious stated.

"Yeah, but I'm sure whatever it is she can handle it." DBA replied.

"She is an immortal being after all." He added.

"So I guess we just wait for her call then." DBA said sitting down with his back against the wall.

"I suppose...but she seemed rather frantic. What could an almighty being like her possibly be so worried about?" Peylet asked, slumping down next to him.

"Well there's really nothing we can do to help her right now, so it's probably best not to worry about it." DBA said.

"I suppose you're right. No point in getting worked up about something you can't reach, right?"

After a brief pause, Peylet smiled and kind-of-sort-of laughed a little bit. Closest thing to a laugh you'd get out of Peylet, anyways.

"It's kind of funny...you never really think that almighty beings like Vitara have their own lives and problems. It's awfully surreal, isn't it?"

"Yeah I suppose." DBA responded.

"You'd think that they'd have it easy being almighty beings." He added.

"Would you mind telling me about your home world?" DBA asked after a brief pause.

Peylet seemed shocked by DBA's question, going at least a full minute without making a movement. Of course, we're talking about Peylet: stuff like that isn't exactly odd with her.

"It...wasn't an entirely pleasant place. Violence and misery was prevalent. I am eternally grateful that I've been brought to this place; it has its fair share of sorrow and careless murdering, but the people have more heart."

Well, that's pleasant.

"I see...from what I know of my world, it was like that to an extent." DBA said.

"Some places were better off than others, but you could never completely escape from all the badness in the world." He added.

"True, but...perhaps that's a good thing? After all, if there's no sadness or pain in the world, how can one ever understand joy and love?" Peylet reasoned.

"It makes sense to me. Imagine you lived a perfect life without misery or suffering...wouldn't things get boring and monotonous after a while? There is only so much that one can do, and you would have nothing to aim for beyond that since you would have everything you ever wanted. At the same time, a life without joy would eventually become monotonous as well...I think that a perfectly balanced life is the key to true happiness."

"So you'd turn down happiness without misery because you think it'd get boring? Do you know how silly that sounds?" DBA asked.

"Even living forever I don't think I'd grow tired of a perfect life, especially if I had someone to spend it with." He said.

"Well, keep in mind that forever is forever. Maybe it's just too much for me to comprehend...but I can't imagine eternal happiness. Or maybe it's that feelings are still too strange for me; I can't imagine feeling the same way about something forever. Maintaining a steady mindset just doesn't seem...plausible."

"Well that's just it - I can't know for sure, at least not until I've lived forever. But, I suppose it's like...like listening to a favorite song or eating a favorite meal. If you listen to it or eat enough it it, then it becomes too much of a good thing and you get bored with it. But if you stop eating that meal and don't hear that song for a few years, the next time you eat that meal or hear that song, it's suddenly wonderful again. Do you understand what I mean? Happiness is wonderful, but overexposure reduces it to stagnation."

"I don't think that really applies." DBA said.

"Happiness isn't something you do, it's a result of how you live your life. Granted it can be taken away, but it's still mostly up to you. If something has become stale to you, then you no longer derive happiness from it. It is not happiness itself that has become stale. And if you had an eternity to spend, then you'd have plenty of time to find the perfect person to spend it with. That person would not become stale to you. You would both merely know each other better each day and strengthen your bond together." He explained.

Peylet fell silent for a moment, taking time to fully absorb DBA's explanation.

"I didn't think of it like that. I was always taught that happiness was just a thing. It was caused by things, but you couldn't quite make it...it was bound to already-existing things by default. I guess I never really thought that happiness followed its own rules. So, then...friendship is happiness? The two aren't exclusive, yet they're not exactly the same?"
