Introduction

.Welcome to Menzoberranzan, the City of Spiders, underground city of the drow.

This is an intrigue-focused play-by-post role-playing game using the Forgotten Realms setting of the Dungeons & Dragons game. Players can create drow characters of any age, gender identity, or class, be they matriarch of an up-and-coming house or an lowly rogue in the slums. It is up to the player to decide what their characters' goals will be and how they will go about it. Want to finally usurp House Baenre and become the preeminent family in Menzobarranzan? Or want to establish the most feared criminal syndicate the city's underworld has ever seen? Perhaps you want to patrol the edges of the Underdark and earn glory defeating the horrible and fantastic creatures that dwell beneath the earth. Or maybe you just want to start and sustain a secret cult to Eilistraee, the drow goddess of beauty, dance, and freedom. The limits are your imagination and, of course, the rules!

There will be monthly plot events to post around, representing important events, with chances to interact with major NPCs. However, PCs are allowed (and encouraged!) to post their own threads for open or closed RP with others. If required, conflict will be moderated, with the expectation PCs will abide by all decisions made. There will be no dice rolls, but god-modding is not allowed. PCs cannot go around killing all their rivals with impunity. Success in conflict will be a product of good roleplaying, creative thinking, and collaboration.

The game's setting is consistent with that laid out in the 5th edition products of D&D, save for the events of Out of the Abyss.

PCs will have to be approved before they are accepted. See the rules for more information.

Toggle Rules

1. Be kind. Humans reside behind the screen. Act like it. Use common courtesy.
2. Keep in mind the major no's of RPing: Godmodding, overpowering, metagaming, and retconning.
3. Players and characters must be adults. While graphic sex and violence are not encouraged, mature subjects are.
4. One player per character.
5. Characters must be drow, but can be of any age, class, alignment, etc.
6. Characters must be approved before posting IC.
7. Conflict will be moderated. There are no dice rolls. PCs can kill other PCs, but there are no guarantees of success. Success will be determined by the quality of roleplaying (believable behavior and reactions, building up to a conclusion, etc.).
8. All canon characters from the Forgotten Realms and its various media, such as Jarlaxle Baenre and Drizzt Do'Urden, are not allowed as PCs.
9. Don't be an edge-lord. Just because the drow are evil does not mean you can over the top with descriptions of cruel and perverse behavior. Characters should be more than two-dimensional mustache-twirling Saturday morning cartoon villains or Patrick Bateman in elf form. Drow do not even necessarily have to be evil. While indicating the cruel, callous nature of drow society is fine, the focus should be on character development and story progression, not torture porn.
10. Have fun!

It is 1491 DR, Year of the Scarlet Witch.

Quenthel Baenre rules supreme over Menzoberranzan, her house as ever unrivalled in status among the drow nobility. Few know, however, that her brother the arch-mage Gromph Baenre mistakenly summoned Demogorgon, Prince of Demons, into the city the year before, causing great destruction and loss of life. Gromph has recently returned from a long, mysterious absence, and once more adopted the duties of his position. Quenthel has decided to host a gala to welcome back her kindred. She hopes the wizard's return will bolster their family in the constant chaos that is politics among the great houses. Houses Barrison Del'Armgo, Faen Tlabbar, and Mizzrym are nominally allies, but none would hesitate to supplant Baenre if given the opportunity. And the Spider Queen's favor can be fickle...

In the Stenchstreets, the Black Sun criminal organization has splintered. New groups rise to fill the vacuum, including the Red Skulls, largely made up of feed (and some escaped) slaves. Only a handful of drow have bothered to notice the increasing popularity and power of this movement made up of goblins and bugbears, but it's only a matter of time...

At the Sorcere, where drow wizards study, the renowned illusionist Sendal Vrylan is investigating an artifact recently recovered from elsewhere in the Underdark. Vrylan is very interested in working with other like-minded colleagues to identify where the artifact came from and, most importantly, how it might help the drow...
