Setting

Both these fiery nations live to fight and seek combat each chance they get. They take pride in power and spontaneity- their passion is everything! Don’t try to hold them back!

Despite their similar life styles, the Aries and Leo kingdom have different geographical situations and therefore different skill sets. Leons are more suited for the rugged terrain while Arians are more prepared for desert battles. Both are powerful military mights and respect each other to a great degree. However, there is an especially significant bond between the ruler of the Aries kingdom and the ruler of the Leo kingdom.

Prior to becoming a Princess, Alexis had run into Zari during her travels around the other kingdoms to challenge talented warriors. Having challenged her, Alexis once again fails to deal a finishing blow and loses. A great respect was formed for not by one of them but both of them. Upon becoming Princess Aries, Alexis sent a letter to Zari requesting a rematch in Zenith. After fighting on her home turf, Alexis won.

Their desire for combat complimented each other greatly. Twice a year, Alexis and Zari publicly and formally duel- once in Zenith in the Spring and once in the Colosseum in the Fall. So far, the score is tied at 3-2 in Zari’s favor.

Despite their similarities, the Aries and Leo kingdoms do not have formal trade treaties considering both of them have what the other would give them- weaponry and military. Of course, there also goes to show how they use their military might: the Leons prefer to be mercenaries, the Aries prefer standing to their own passions. They are an interesting pair, fanning each others’ flames to grow brighter and brighter.

2,5 years ago in Leo's Kingdom

As every morning Zari was practicing with Griffen. Their swords slashed together, and Zari was jumping around their practice room. She was wearing a light black leather armor as usually for easier moving and knowing she definitely wasn't in danger. It was an unwritten rule between her and Griffen that no blood would be shed and the sword would stop before it faced skin. "Miss Leo!" Cayden, one of the Captains and her closest adviser shouted. "What?" Zari asked bluntly not letting her eyes of Griffen as their fight continued. " I have interesting news. There's someone challenging the warriors of Leos near the market place." Zari chuckled a bit. "That person is either bold or crazy. But fine I go check what this is about." she answered and hit the sword off from her brother's hand placing the edge of her blade on his neck. "You died."

After getting to the market place still wearing the same outfit she looked around to find this person. It didn't take long to find as there was already a ring of audience cheering their fellow Leo that were getting mixed into fighting sounds. Leos let her through as soon as they saw her but the view Zari faced made her surprised. Not only the fighter was an Arian and a woman but she could fight as well. Her opponent at the moment was Zari's childhood friend Lucas who, when not a great fighter covered it up with his amazing speed that the Arian was capable to keep up with. "Lucas! Don't play around!" she shouted to him. "Are you warrior or not?!" It was rare to see someone from another kingdom and even rarer for them to challenge a Leo or several. And of course Zari wanted to prove everyone her army was strongest. She observed the Arian close. She had to admit that girl could fight, however with Zari's keen eyes her movements were easy to predict.

Alexis Conall- Prior to Princessdom

Controlled breathing. Quick movements. Sharp eyes. Vigilant responses. Alexis recited these in her mind as she fought this Leon, her sword clashing with his constantly. These fights had long since failed to be fun. In all honesty, the first fight came as a result of wondering where she could go to train. All of a sudden, she was training in the street? Not uncommon in Aries but the thought it could happen elsewhere surprised her.

'Don't hesitate! You should have finished me!'

Those words were so engraved in her mind that she could think the words faster than she could say them. She had to fight to win. To live. Her mind travelled back to the challenge issued by Prince Travis Hunter Aries. The demand in his eyes. The determination.

The bloodlust.

That was the only reason she had interfered in the first place. Stupid Jaun and his lack of fighting skills. The scar on her back seared, still painful months after. Her teeth ground, eyes flaring angrily.

'Show me you are worthy of fighting a Prince of Aries!' The voice bellowed. 'Three years! You will fight me again!'

There was no need for him to say the or else. It was a given for Prince Aries's rule.

As the Leon charged at her, she pivoted. Not wanting to cause bloodshed from his carelessness, Alexis threw herself at him, causing him to fall over and hit the ground. Her foot slammed down on his sword hand and her sword tip went to his throat. "Yield."

With a sigh, the Leon released his sword, grinning up at her. A small smile of her own formed as she removed her foot and sword and offered him a hand to stand once more. He rose, grinning at her. "Nice fighting, little lady."

"Not so bad yourself," she answered, a cheerful attitude finally breaking through her stern demeanor. Alexis looked around at the crowd around her, thinking quietly. "I guess I'll be going now. There are fights elsewhere to do and I've had my fill of Leon's."

Princess Zari Leo

Seeing Lucas to lose the fight Zari growled lowly. How could a Leo lose to someone? Before Lucas even had stepped away from the ring Zari had drawn a claymore from her back and stand in front of the woman."Mind to have another fight?" she asked from her loudly enough to everyone hear. There was immediately gasping and whispering among the Leos. "Zari? Is she going to challenge her?" "That girl is an outsider. She has no chances." "We're having an Arian for dinner tonight" The audience were laughing and mocking her. Zari ignored their behaviour. She wasn't going to take this fight lightly. She had to show the true nature of her Kingdom. Besides it was also a good opportunity to give a little reminder to Leos why she was the Princess.

"And Lucas, you need more lessons. I will talk to your Captain." She said confidently even if Lucas was few years older than her. Lucas blushed and nodded stumbling away from the ring and out of the way.

Zari looked back at the Arian. "What you say, stranger? Or are you perhaps too scared to accept my challenge?" The Leos laughed. This was a fight they wanted to see. Their ruler kicking someone's ass.

Her eyes settled on the newcomer, examining her. The Leo seemed to hold power to gain so much response to her challenge. And here she was thinking she could finally move past this city. Or at least get some rest. 'Not like the Prince would give you a break. He will be relentless. There is no exception.' She turned to face the Leo, grin wide and hiding her reluctancy to continue. "Very well, miss. I will fight with you."

Taking her stance, Alexis held up her sword. She examined the other, trying to predict what her fighting style would be like. Would she pounce forward like the other Leos? No... No, she was different. She would be more controlled, containing that wilder side. She wouldn't hold back. Alexis felt a spark flare inside of her, a new excited light in her eyes. 'No need to hold back.'

Princess Zari Leo

Zari hold her claymore firmly. She let the Arian estimate her since it was only fair for this duel. She had been observing her fighting style already. Zari bowed her head before start – an old habit taught by her father. You had to always show respect towards your enemy even if it would be a mere thief.

”Fight!”

A Leo that had been acting as a ringmaster shouted and immediately Zari run forward. She headed straight to her head first – a move usually made by amateurs, but it was only a bluff. Using the long blade Zari reflect sun towarsds the Arian to blind her even for a second. As Zari was in the distance close enough to attack with a sharp movement she spun around to backside of the Arian swinging her sword aiming to the side of her neck.

The battle had begun.

As the light blinded her eyes, Alexis knew she was fighting no amateur. The other was doing whatever it took to win. She felt a small tingle of excitement running through her as she ducked below the swing, moving at a much faster rate then she had been doing with the other Leo’s. Below the other's arm, she shoved her body into her, causing the woman to stagger bit ever so slightly before getting back into her ready stance. Her eyes hid a glimmer of a challenge, daring the Leo to attack her once more. She knew very well she was tired and attacking with reckless volleys currently would not do any good for her.

“COME ON! GIVE US A FIGHT!” A voice from the crowd screamed. Everyone began to jeer and shout, calling for Alexis to move. She held her place, ready for the next attack.

Zari was slightly surprised the Arian had been able to avoid her attack and made her even took a couple of steps back to find her balance. "Not too shabby." She smirked taking a stance. She could have just keep attacking but waited. She wanted to see what this woman was made of. The look Arian had told she would do everything she could.

"What is it? Did you already lost your strength?" Zari spoke loudly mocking her. However she wasn't doing it for disrespect, she wanted the battle to continue.

Alexis laughed, examining the other with bright eyes. So it looked like it was a test of stamina and energy. Ah, this would be interesting. She dashed forward, her sword easily blockable as it came down. Alexis wanted to clash swords, to test this woman’s strength. Adrenaline rushed through her veins and excitement burst from her eyes. She didn’t have to hold back.

Images from her training reemerged, multiple battles on end in the special training camp the Aries Prince had saved for the best of the best. She learned of honor. She learned of how battle style was another expression of herself- her true self, no boundaries. Alexis found a strange being residing inside of her, having been fighting to emerge since the beginning. The spirit inside of her seemed to carry bright desire and intensity. The spirit loved life and action. The spirit loved to fight. And although Alexis had been suppressing it through her travels, the spirit was coming to light once more. ’Fight! Fight!’

Zari laughed softly seeing the Arians excitement. It made her to feel more excited as well. It was refreshing to fight against someone else than a Leo. The audience was now growing more and more louder as well cheering for both of them. This battle wasn't just a practice match, this fight had a soul.

She blocked her swing easily their swords clashing against each other. Zari's hold was firm and tight. She pushed against the other blade not going to lose. As she was facing her she spoke to her. "You're not an ordinary fighter, I can tell it from your eyes. However..." Zari was using more strength to push her blade away. "Your movements are too easy to read." She finished pushing her away, taking a couple of the steps back and dashed towards her from the side, lowering her body about to attack on her side but in the last second she just swung her leg hitting the woman behind a knee to drop her down. Zari stopped behind her and turned towards her in a stance.

The strength and firmness behind the sword gave Alexis a good gauge of how the other’s power was. She seemed nearly as solid as a rock. Then again, Alexis was good at breaking rocks. As the woman slammed the back of her knee, Alexis fell before pivoting in the other direction, still on one knee but in a proper defensive stance as she once again rose to her feet. ”You read my moves because I’m not trying to hide them,” Alexis informed her, teeth glinting in the sunlight. ”I charge, you get out of the way.” With this she came at her once more, the light glinting as it swung in an arc to get at the other’s side.

Zari smirked as she saw the blade coming. A move she had waited for. She waited until the blade was just in the right angle and distance and... Jumped. With just right timing she landed on top of the Arians blade on one foot, and using it as a springboard jumped again.

The Leos were going wild. This was Zari's signature move. No one else even in Leos had been crazy enough to jump on the opponents blade. It was a combination of accuracy, strength, speed and reading the opponents movements. It also needed a great knowledge of swords not to injure one's foot and to count it could handle the weight. All this in few seconds.

Zari made a volt over her opponent's head landing behind her and quickly turned around to see the effect of her move.

The blade nearly tumbled from her hand at such a strange technique. Alexis eyes grew wide in surprise but she forced herself not to think but to act. She squatted as the blade bent under the Leo’s weight, balancing herself. Her hand held strong against the reluctance of the blade to bend. The Leo bolted above her but as Alexis turned on her heel, prepared to strike immediately at her landing. Then words cut through like arrows.

”Go get her, Princess!”

That made her freeze in her place. ”Prin…cess?” Her blade, which had been about to move forward to take out the other, stopped. She stopped. Her mind went to the Prince, the anger on his features, the b…bloodlust…

Her hesitation was all the other needed to win.

Seeing her opponents moment of shock and hesitation Zari charged swinging her claymore hitting on the Arians blade that swung away from her hand and with another fast move her blade was against woman's neck so close she could feel it but there wasn't a single drop of blood.

"WIN!"

The ringmaster shout and Leos shouted and applauded to Zari who lowered her sword and bowed to them. She turned back to the Arian. "Nice match. Now may I introduce myself. I'm Zari Leo the warlord and the Princess of this Kingdom." Even being a fierce fighter she was still had taught good manners. "What is your name, warrior?"

It all happened so fast. Yet, all she could expect when the sword came to her throat was anger and outrage.

‘I didn’t mean to hesitate. I won’t do it again. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Please, don’t scar me.’

Her fears faded as the sword left from her throat and the Princess bowed to the crowd. She blinked a bit before throwing on that smile once more and reaching down for her sword, sheathing it. Alexis met the Princess’s eyes before bowing slightly. “Alexis Conall, Prince Leo. I’ve been traveling around the kingdoms in search of training outside of the Aries kingdom. I did not mean to intrude upon your street. I was actually looking for a training center, not a fight.”

Zari laughed. "A training center? This whole Kingdom is a training centre. Everyone in here dedicate their life to fighting." Zari smiled to her as she placed her claymore on her back. "But if you want to find a place to practice we have large training grounds on the palace. Sword fighting, bow, hand to hand. Anything you can think of can be trained there. But the best way to train yourself is to challenge others. Smashing targets can't be compared to a real fight." Zari was sure the Arian knew it already but her instinct told her that woman would do something great one day and that's why she should be polite and help her. She didn't know where that instinct came from but it was another lesson from her father. "Always trust your instincts, the are rarely wrong."

The ringmaster walked to them offering a jar of water both of them bowing to Zari. Zari nodded as a thank and took a long sip. "I can also offer you a place for night or a meal. Think it as a reward for a good fight. And I'm sure with a little polishing you'll be able to reach what you are aiming for."

Alexis accepted the jar offered, taking a quick sip before letting it hang to her side. It seemed she had not been too exhausted from the fights, just extremely bored. "I do appreciate the offer and would be happy to take up on your offer. It's been a while since I've slept in a bed so that would be good." Moving to the side, Alexis picked up the lone but large bag that had been laying there. Worn, the bag seemed to have gone through months on the road. It seemed far past retirement.

Slinging it onto her back, she looked to the Princess once more. "Your fighting skills are phenomenal, Princess Leo. It must be from much training. I personally prefer training on my own before training with partner. After all, there are no repercussions for cutting up a wood post." She tipped her head back, finishing up the rest of the water before handing the empty jar to the ringmaster. "Thank you for judging the matches today."

"No repercussions but not real life experience either." Zari laughed friendly. She preferred to train against another person instead of wooden dolls but everyone had their own style. It was important to find a training method best for them. "And since you asked, I was five when I got a real sword instead of some clumsy wooden sword." she added as she waved Cayden to her.

"Cayden, show this miss a way to the barracks and arrange her an own room. We want to let our quest to sleep in peace instead of having to listen brawling men." Zari smirked and some nearby Leos looked embarrassed. Zari knew well enough the soldiers liked to drink and fight even more after being drunk enough. She turned back to Alexis. "The dinner in barracks is from four to six. Cayden will show you the way to dining hall and practice rooms as well. Eat as much as you want. It's all on me." Zari gave a friendly smile - something you didn't see often. But this Arian had lighten not only her own but Zari's fighting spirit as well.

"I wish best of luck to your journey miss Conall. Remember never underestimate your opponent."

She smiled at her, eyes bright. "Thank you once more, Princess Leo. I hope to see you again sometime. And another sparring match would be welcomed as well." Alexis gave a small wave, turning to follow Cayden. A good rest sounded pleasant after all this fighting.

"I'm booooooored," Alexis groaned, splayed out on her bed. She was restless. The last fight so good it got her blood pumping for more. But she knew very well she shouldn't push herself to do more. Sighing, Alexis hopped off the bed and left the room in search of entertainment.

Princess Zari Leo

It wasn't long after Zari got back to her castle when one of the guards approached him. "Miss Leo" he said bowing. "I apologize for bothering but there's a fight in the barracks going on. This time it's at the dining hall. Even some Captains have taken part in it instead of trying to calm down their unit." Zari wanted to slam her head on the wall. Again? it had been only two days ago since she had been stopped one. A small fights happened everyday but it wasn't small anymore if Zari got involved.

"Fine fine. I come to take care of it." Zari turned over and followed the guard. "What the heck are those Captains doing? They should be preventing fighting and instead they go along. God damnit it's not even night yet. And just when I was going to get a nice shower" Zari was thinking in her mind. As they got closer it was clear there was a ruckus. The sounds of sword clashing together, men shouting and cursing, tables and chairs shattering - It all could be heard far. Growling Zari draw her claymore and kicked the door open.

"The next person raising his sword will face me!"

Zari's loud shout echoed in the hall as she was looking at her warriors with narrowed eyes. One by one the men turned towards her lowering their weapons. "And this time, I'm not going to pay for your new furniture. You keep smashing it like trash! The only trash I see in here is you!" She spoke loud and clear making sure every one of them would heard her. "And you three" she pointed at the Captains that were having their own share of fun. "One more time and I kick your ass!" Zari was pissed of for doing their work. Surprisingly none of them stood against her. "Too scared or too drunk even have a real fight?" Zari wondered.

She stood there proud and ready to attack definitely not looking an ordinary princess. She was a wild cat.

“Maybe because they know who the alpha is in all this,” Alexis joked from the doorway. Having heard the commotion, she had come over to quench her boredom. To think they were having a reckless fight in all this. Then again, was this different from the Arian kingdom? She could remember well her time in the barracks. Yes, there was a friendliness to all of it but they knew respect down to the core. If a higher up ranked officer told you to shut up, you did so. Push ups, you did so. If the Prince told you to train for 3 years… You did so. No questions asked. Here, there was still a wild, untamed spirit alive in these Leos. Alexis thought of what it would be like if she still had that fire. If she could get it back. Drifting back into reality, she waved a hand to those who turned to look at her. “Don’t mind me, just wandering about.”

'Well, let’s see how she disciplines them,’ Alexis thought quietly. ‘It should be interesting what happens.’

"Ah good evening miss Conall." Zari greeted her and turned back to his men. "Okay, listen up you pieces of shit! You'll clean this whole hall spotless right now! And you do it with using your own toothbrush!" Some of the men groaned. "Shut up! You can choose either that or 200 push-ups"! Zari snapped her fingers. A mark that it had to happen immediately. There was two men that started to do the push-ups but the rest stayed still. They could tell Zari was pissed off and didn't want to anger her even more. "And you better fix all the chairs and tables you broke unless you don't want to sit on floor for the next two years. I'll come back in three hours and I want this place to be so clean I can see my reflection on the floor!"

Zari just turned around sharply knowing they would get to work. She then approached Alexis. "Have you enjoyed your time in my Kingdom, miss Conall?" she asked calmly like nothing had happened.

She could almost laugh! Ah, the memories of having to clean rooms spotless with toothbrushes. It made fights all the more worth it. Alexis watched with approval as the men began to work, looking over at Zari. She gave a small wave, pushing to stand up once more. “It’s been a bit rowdy but I find this kingdom very pleasurable,” Alexis replied, humming happily. “Any recommendations for places I can visit while having my stay? I’d like to take a small break from training for a while.”

The past few months had been nonstop training. The first three at a special forces unit for the Arians. The next few traveling across the kingdoms, fighting whoever she could and refusing failure. She couldn’t say she hated it. What she felt was different than hatred. Reluctance? Possibly. More like disappointment. That every day she’d have to do something to be better. “If it’s no trouble, would you care to show me around?”

Zari thought about it. She had few hours to spare. Usually she didn't bother to show places around and asked some of the servants do it instead. However she wanted to know more about this woman. "Well why not. Do you like mead? There's one tavern nearby that makes the best mead in my Kingdom. It also delivers it to the barracks unfortunately", Zari glanced behind her where the men kept on working. Even if her voice sounded stern, it was clear she was more joking than being serious. "Or I can show you around the forges if you're interested. I'm sorry I don't have that much to show as my Kingdom focuses purely on fighting and weaponry." she laughed a bit.

Zari walked to outside breathing the fresh evening air. That was one of the reasons she liked to live in mountains, the air was different than in other Kingdoms. Of course it was colder for once but it was also more pure. There was no sand from desert nor pollen from the trees.

She hummed in thought, taking one last look at the working men before turning on her heel and following after the Princess. "I'd like to see the forge if you don't mind. In all honesty, I've missed the searing heat of the desert. But, a traveler must travel and a fighter must fight." Alexis followed after the Princess, looking over to her. "Again, thank you for inviting me to the palace as well as showing me around. That fight we have was also very informative."

'It shows I'm still unprepared to fight the Prince again...'

The scar on her back felt like it was throbbing once more. She fought the urge to touch it. Her mind, however, rested on the fact that she faced the possibility that there wouldn't only be one scar on her back. She'd get another... With a small chuckle to fight these intrusive thoughts, Alexis took a deep breath, taking in that pure mountain air. "How have you been, Princess?" She asked to spur on conversation.

Zari chuckled softly. "Aren't you pretty blunt. Not many visitors ask how am I. But don't worry it's refreshing to meet someone like that. Someone's who not always bowing and speaking polite, choosing carefully their words not to offend me. Well the last part might have more to do with them being afraid of me than just mere offending. Anyway being a Princess isn't as glamorous as it sounds. There's a huge amount of paperwork to do. But I still prefer to do it myself to be sure all the numbers are right." She talked while leading Alexis to the forges. It was a mere chit chat but not something Zari did often. She preferred to go straight down to business. However wanting to know more about this woman, she was playing along her rules. She wanted to know something about her, and she would tell it, but expected an answer.

The forge was actually a huge complex with several smaller forges inside the area and was located near the castle itself. Even if it was already evening the blacksmiths were still working. Zari had always admired their passion for work. They were mostly producing one or two-handed swords, shields and armors but there could be seen bows and arrows, spears, war hammers and maces as well. There truly was something for everyone. Zari greeted the workers familiarly, almost everyone by name. They bowed back at her wishing her good evening or asking what they could do to her at this ”lovely evening” as they phrased it. ”Thank you but I'm just showing this lady around.” Zari answered to them as each of them offered to help with a tour. ”As you can see they are really proud of their work. The secrets of these forges have been passed from master to apprentice for decades, some maybe even centuries.” she said clearly an admiring tone in her voice.
