Description
A thousand years ago, Merlin might have looked like a wizard, but that clearly isn't the case anymore. Like Morgause, Merlin had to blend into the passing centuries, only he managed to do a better job at doing so. His white hair is kept short, and his once iconic beard has been trimmed down severely into the shorter facial hair it is now. Merlin wears a green bandanna around his forehead, a blue flowery shirt and simple jeans with regular sneakers. And although he leaves a first impression of being some old hippy, this man is indeed the great wizard.
Usually accompanying Merlin is what appears to be a pet owl. That owl is actually his familiar, named Archimedes after the Greek philosopher. Archimedes is a simple-looking owl with light brown feathers on his underside and darker brown feathers on his back and wings. He has big golden eyes, typical of a creature of his species. Like his master, Archimedes is full of knowledge, and is (as Merlin puts it) "a highly educated owl", even being able to speak in multiple languages including old English, Latin, and Celtic. Unlike the more humble Merlin, Archimedes can be snooty at times, and often debates or even flat out bickers with Merlin over various controversies and whatnot. At the end of the day, Archimedes is still a loyal friend and good to have around.
Personality
Merlin comes off as a quirky old man whom the sixities were not kind to. When one first meets him, he will usually put up the facade of an old hippy named Martin still living in the 1960s. However, when the time comes, this facade will immediately dissolve and Merlin will show his true colors, those of a wise and powerful wizard. While he used to carry an old oak staff back in the old days, in these times Merlin carries a walking-cane to use as a magic staff or wand for using magic.
Equipment
An ordinary-looking cane that actually serves as Merlin's magic wand/staff.
History
Born ages ago, Merlin sought to unite England under a single, benevolent ruler. Following the advice of the Lady of the Lake, Merlin orchestrated Uther Pendragon's victory in the wars and reign as King. When Uther turned out to be a less-than-satisfctory ruler, Merlin again sought advice from the Lady of the Lake. This time, he was advised to orchestrate an affair between King Uther and Lady Igraine, producing a boy named Arthur. Under Merlin's tutelage, Arthur eventually grew to become the King of Camelot, and started the Knights of the Round Table. In the peak of Arthur's reign, Merlin created 6 powerful rings for Arthur and 5 of his most valued knights. One of those knights, however, was Sir Mordred, who eventually rebelled against Arthur. In the great battle that was fought, Mordred struck a mortal blow to Arthur before being slain himself by Arthur's sword.
With the battle over, Merlin and the knights disposed of Mordred's body and buried his Black Ring deep under the earth and sent Arthur's ring along with his body to the mystical island of Avalon. Meanwhile, Merlin created a final seventh ring, and entrusted it to the young son of Sir Lancelot, Galahad, who later vanished without a trace. Since then, Merlin has lived in among men throughout the annals of history for a thousand years. When Merlin suddenly sensed that the Black Ring had been unearthed, he worked fast to summon the descendants of the Round Table Knights to combat the threat of Morgause, Mordred's mother and Arthur's half-sister.
