When Roger died, Alex essentially lost himself. Roger was a fixture in his life
and Alex's best friend, so when he lost that, Alex didn't know what to do.
He seemed to stop truly living after that, only working and using the bottle as a crutch. After a few months, Alex was asked to leave work and try and get better as most of his fellow staff caught on to his depression pretty quickly. For the past few months, he has been getting better and figured that Short Term 12 was a good place to take a step towards recovery as he feels he isn't ready to return to treating patients.

Alex hasn't talked to his family in months as he wants to see them when he's better. His family knows about his depression, but didn't know how bad it really was. While they were also close to Roger, Alex and Roger were closer then Alex is with his actual brothers. While he does get a call every now and again from his mother or one of his brothers, he's usually good at deflecting enough questions to make them worry.

Alex has always been the type of guys to go completely out of his way to help someone else. He always put others before himself and usually has to be forced to work on himself. While he is socially capable and genuinely charming and funny, he is brutally honest at times, often giving advice even when it's not asked of him in an effort to help. Alex is also the type of guy to never leave a job half down. This often leaves him annoyed when he is pulled away from an unfinished job, but if he's pulled away for something important, this feeling can be quelled. At heart however, Alex is definitely a sensitive guy as well as an embarrassing romantic although this side is never really showed as he usually drowns himself in work. He also does a similar process with his emotions, often burying them deep down and not addressing them until he absolutely has to. He has recently became a bit better at vocalizing his emotions and feelings, but still keeps the more dire things to himself.

Alex was born the second child of a middle class family in sunny California. Alex had a comfortable life as his mother ran a local bakery and his dad worked from home as a programmer for a software company. By the time Alex was ready to start school, his mother was pregnant with his little brother Aaron and his older brother Isaac was already in middle school. He met Roger White on his first day of school and the two immediately became friends. Over the years their bond strengthened and Roger helped Alex get through some tough times at home as Aaron had become addicted to cocaine. The family did what they thought was best and sent him to rehab, but after he was released, he stole from the bakery and left town. Alex wanted to chase after his brother and get him help, but like always, Roger talked him out of it.
The two stuck together like brothers all throughout college with Alex going for his medical degree and Roger wanting to get a teaching degree. Of course, Roger graduated before his friend and eventually moved out of their apartment. Luckily, Alex was able to afford the apartment for another year and he received his degree. He began to practice at the local hospital and while it was stressful, it was fulfilling. Then Alex heard the news about Roger. Roger was driving home late one night when was blind sided by a drunk driver. Needless to say, Alex was devastated and returned home for the funeral, seeing his family and Isaac for the first time since his recovery. Like always, he put up a front to mask how terrible he was feeling and after the funeral, returned to work. This lasted for a few months until the higher ups realized that Alex was slowly killing himself with work and when he wasn't working he'd drink himself into a stupor. So they "asked" him to take leave until he got better. That was six months ago and Alex has recovered to the point where he feels he can work in some capacity, but doesn't want to go back to the hospital. So, Short Term 12 seemed like a good middle ground.
