Cassandra couldn't believe that her father finally found someone willing to be their ranch hand. He's been looking for someone to take this job for a few months now, even offered them a place to stay. Though in a way Cassandra was a bit reluctant to meeting this man. Every other ranch hand whom has worked for her father always seemed to be a jerk towards her. There was no way this man was going to be any different, it just wasn't going to be possible.

The female stood in the kitchen with her mother, helping her set the table. Her father invited him to dinner tonight in order for the man to meet the family and get the run down on everything Cassandra's father wanted him to do on a daily basis. This dinner was something that happened all the time, it was a bit normal to the teenager.

She finally finished setting the table when she heard the doorbell ring. "Cassandra, can you get that?" she heard her father question from his room.

The teenager sighed and rolled her eyes, "Yes Pa," she answered, though deep down all she wanted to do was go up to her room and finish her homework that was due the next day then go to bed. She would prefer that to meeting another asshole.

Upon opening the door, Cassandra was shocked to find that there was a younger man standing behind it. This couldn't be the man her father was talking about. He was drop dead gorgeous. "Rudy?" she questioned, trying to make sure this was the man she was supposed to welcome into her home.

Rudy's truck came to a halt when he applied pressure to the brakes. He parked right at the end of the driveway, next to the house he was going to for dinner. His new employer invited him for dinner. Rudy wasn't opposed to having dinner with the guy, but he had to miss a party for this. He couldn't lose another job before he even got to actually start working. He hopped out of the truck with a bottle of wine in his hand. With his free hand he took off his hat and sat it in the passenger seat of his truck. He hesitantly made his way up to the door and rang the bell. After waiting a few seconds, Rudy was greeted by a young girl, maybe a teenager. he assumed it was the farmer's daughter. When she spoke his name, he smiled politely "That's me." He handed her the bottle of wine. "I brought that as a gift. If you want you can take that to your room or to a party and drink it. That's what I would recommend. But if you're a good girl, you would give that to your dad. Either way, I'll be helping out one of you."

The memories of high school filled his thoughts as he looked around the home. His eyes made his way back to the girl "How rude of me. I never asked your name. What may it be?"

Cassandra laughed a bit when she heard his words and decided to go with what he recommended. "I'm Cassandra. Come in," she stated before allowing him inside and closing the door behind him. "My father will be right out. Just head through the hall and take a left and you'll be in the dining room. I'm up, taking this up to my room," she stated as she whispered the last part so he would be the only one to hear her.

The female climbed the stairs up to her bedroom and closed the door behind her before hiding the wine bottle in her closet in an old suitcase. "I think I might get along with this one," she commented to herself before stepping back out her room and making it back downstairs, just in time to hear her father welcoming Rudy to dinner and introducing him to Ma.

"Cassandra, you should have lead him to the dining room. I thought I taught you not to be so rude," her father stated to his daughter.

Cassandra sighed and nodded her head, "I'm sorry Pa, I needed to take care of some personal business. It won't happen again," she stated as she took a seat at the table across from her mother and beside Rudy.

Rudy smiled as he learned the girl's name. He followed her directions as she left him. He walked down the hall and gazed at the decorations sitting around. He turned the corner into the dining room and saw his new boss and his wife standing inside. He put on another polite, but more real smile as he simply said, "Hello" in a peppy tone. He walked around the table and shook hands with his boss and gave a hug to his wife. He heard some footsteps and turned to see Cassandra return from wherever she ran off to. He guessed it was probably to go hide the bottle of wine he handed her.

Rudy heard Mr. Fitz speak to her, and also her returned apology. Rudy spoke up "You don't have to be so harsh on her, Mr Fitz. She gave me directions and it also gave me some time to realize what a wonderful home you have." He thought that might cut the girl some slack for a bit.

Cassandra glanced over at Rudy with a look of surprise when she heard that he was sticking up for her. Part of her felt good about it though the other part of her felt bad for him. There could be a number of ways Pa could react to this, most of them not being so pretty. Though to her surprise her father seemed to react calmly.

"Alright, as long as you weren't offended by it, gather hands everyone. Cassandra it's your prayer night," Pa stated.

Cassandra felt a little uncomfortable reaching for Rudy's hand, just as she did with every other man before but did as her father asked. Once everyone's hands were locked with each other, she bowed her head and began the prayer. "Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this meal and the gathering of my family and the newcomer to our little family. Amen," she opened her eyes and removed her hand from Rudy's and placed it back on her lap.

Whenever Cassandra prayed, it was always short. Yes, she believed in God but she was never a big fan of leading a prayer, it always made her feel uncomfortable because she hated being the center of attention. That is unless she is performing her music. Any other time, she didn't like it in the least.

"Alright, feel free to dig in son. Do you have any questions about the job or about anyone in the house? Don't hold anything in, we're an honest family," Pa stated to Rudy as he began making his plate. Piling chicken, potatoes, mac n cheese, etc. onto the plate.

Rudy repeated the last part after Cassandra "Amen. He hadn't sat down for a meal where he had to pray in a while. It actually put a smile on his face. He used to sit down like this with his family all the time when he was still living with them. It was something that actually made him slightly upset that he didn't go to his parent's house for dinner. With the thought put aside and a new one in place of it, Rudy was ready to eat. He was about to start, but Mr. Fitz spoke. His words actually gave him a chance to speak up "I actually do have something to say. First off, I wanna thank you so much, Mr. Fitz, for giving me this opportunity to work with you and show you all my potential, but I wanna thank you and your whole family for letting me dine with you tonight. And one more thing. This is for Cassandra."

Rudy turned his focused over to the girl "If you ever need to talk to me about any problems about high school or just being a teenager, go ahead. I'm not that much older than you and also I could've used someone to talk to during high school besides my parents. So don't hesitate to bother me." Rudy finished his short speech and started to pass some food around, and add some to his plate.

"Oh, um, thanks," she stated more in shock than anything. It wasn't everyday that a stranger would welcome her to talk to them about her teenage problems. Especially one of her father's staff.

Though just as Cassandra suspected, she noticed a soft smile sweep over both her parent's faces as they looked at each other. They had something going on in their heads, but Cassandra knew better than to say anything. She was in no mood to get in trouble for trying to get in the middle of her parent's business, especially in front of their company.

"Cassandra, after dinner I want you to show Rudy around the ranch, let him know what kind of things he'd be doing. I need to make an appearance at the sheriffs office after dinner," Pa stated.

Cassandra nodded her head, "Yes Sir."

The sound of silverware clinking together and some chewing filled Rudy's ears. He was happy to be invited to dinner. He ate as he listened to the small interaction between Cassandra and her father happen. It seemed to Rudy that Mr. Fitz trusted his daughter with his employees and also trusted her with his farm. Rudy wasn't going to bring it up, but it was the fact that he used to come out to Mr. Fitz's farm and drink with a bunch of his buddies back in high school. He even almost set all of his bails of hay on fire once. It made Rudy chuckle softly.

After only a few minutes Rudy was full. He couldn't help but thank the family once again "Thank all of you so much. This dinner was just wonderful. It was also wonderful to share it with all of you. I couldn't be anymore thankful for any of this. Just, thank you." Rudy almost made himself sick. He was being polite, but it was just something he never really did much anymore. He would say thank you here and there, but he never sold himself out like he just did.

The rest of the dinner went by decently. When Cassandra was finished eating, she was excused from the table and began leading Rudy out the front door of their home. "I'm sorry about my father. He tends to be a bit strict. Try not to take it personal," she apologized to Rudy as she began leading him out to the area he would be spending most of his time at.

Though Cassandra couldn't help but to study his attractiveness once more. But quickly removed her mind from that. Her father wouldn't be too happy if she were to try messing around with someone on her staff. She just knew that from the get go. Espeically since her father sat down and talked to her about it a couple years ago.

The tour Rudy was being lead on was nice. He got a layout of the land and understood what he was going to be doing the next morning. "Your father seems like a good man. He may be a little tough on you, but he's just being a caring father. So... any issues in your life? With high school or anything? Any boy problems? He tried hinting at some interesting topics. He remembered his glory days back in high school. He used to party all the time and had the best girlfriend a guy could want. But he always ended up cheating on her because he couldn't get enough. That part of himself disgusted him and everyone close to him. He pushed passed that and shook the memory from his head.

Cassandra shrugged her shoulders. "Other than the fact that every one of my so-called friends wants to beat the shit out of me for some unknown reason, not really. Though with the boys. No one is attracted to me, they don't even speak to me," she responded. This was a bit embarrassing to admit, but she always answered questions truthfully. It was something she was raised to do.

Cassandra found herself over by the barn where her horse, Snow was and she stepped inside. It was time for her to be fed anyway. She grabbed the pitch fork and began placing some hay into Snow's stall as she continued talking with Rudy. "This is Snow, the love of my life," she stated as she set the pitch fork down and walked over to her horse and began petting her. "I had her since I was fourteen."

Rudy couldn't believe what he had just heard. The first thing that freaked him out was that it seemed as if Cassandra really pissed off everyone she knows, but what really got him was what came next. It was astonishing to him that she didn't have a boyfriend. When he first saw Cassandra answer the door he thought she was beautiful. He didn't want to tell her that and seem like a creep, but it was the truth to him. He didn't say anything, but kept on following her.

His feet stopped moving as Cassandra stopped by her horse. Rudy examined the creature. He was a big fan of riding when he was a kid and even a teen, but he hasn't gotten the chance to ride in a while. "She's definitely a beautiful horse. I used to ride actually. Haven't in a while, but I enjoyed it while I did." He was hesitant on bringing anything else up, but he did so, "I can't believe no boy finds you beautiful. They must all be out of their minds. You know what... You don't need any of those losers. You are perfect the way you are."

Cassandra was a bit shocked to find that Rudy thought she was attractive. Though part of her thought he was just saying it to make her feel better about herself, just as her mother does. But either way she gave him a soft smile, "Thanks. So what was it that made you choose to start working for my father. I'm sure there are other more less annoying jobs out there," she questioned.

As much as she enjoyed speaking to Rudy, she would much rather stop talking about herself as often as possible. There were some things about herself she felt embarrassed for others to know about. Especially about her boy situation. Though at this point, she was still trying to figure out what she did she piss of her two best friends. She would have to try to talk to them about that and see what's up. It's probably just a bunch of stupid shit.

The question was simple. His answer was also pretty simple. "I guess the reason I decided to work for your father was because I needed to get away from city folk. I think the country side and farms are more my speed than serving drinks at a bar. And also, just between you and me, it's sort of an apology for what I almost did to your daddy's farm. A while back when I was your age, a couple of my buddies and I used to hang out at this farm. We would come at night and drink our worries away. One night, it was around the time I was going from my junior to senior year of high school, we got a hold of some fireworks. And of course we weren't on our peak game. We had been drinking. I lit a firework and stumbled as it went off. It shot right at a bunch of hay bales and almost set the whole farm ablaze, but thank god it missed by just a bit. It did hit some dry grass, but we were able to but it out in a few seconds."

The second Cassandra heard his story, her eyes widened. She remembered that night. That was the night she was home alone and her father blamed her for the hay and the field catching on fire. Cassandra remembered hearing the fireworks going off and just before she was able to get out to the group of guys, the fire was already died out and they were already leaving. Cassandra didn't see the point in telling her father what truly happened when she knew he wouldn't believe her in the first place.

"I remember that night. i saw it happen. My father blamed me for it and I kept the truth to myself. I didn't see any point in getting the police involved. That is if it would have been possible for my father to believe the truth. But um, thanks for at least putting it out," she responded.

Rudy was surprised by her response. He had no idea anyone was even home during that moment. He quickly apologized "I had no idea that you got blamed for my dumb mistake. If you want me to I can go tell your father that the whole fire situation was my fault." Rudy knew that if he confessed to Mr. Fitz about almost causing a fire on his property he would surely be fired from being a farmhand. He didn't say another word. Rudy knew that there were way too many memories that he had at this very farm. But he did come to remember one such story.

There was no hesitation with sharing the story. Rudy just blurted it out "I do actually remember one other story from when I was on your father's farm. I'm not very proud of myself for this one either, but it was a milestone in my life for sure. It started off with a party just down the road. I was about to go take this one girl that I had been flirting with home, but it started to downpour as we were walking home from the party. So we ran for cover in this very barn. We were young and stupid at the time. We weren't really thinking. What happened next was all in the moment an-" Rudy paused. He didn't know if he even wanted to tell this story. He just stopped talking completely and let the silence fill the barn.

"I had no idea that you got blamed for my dumb mistake. If you want me to I can go tell your father that the whole fire situation was my fault."

Cassandra sighed and shook her head, "Don't worry about it. It happened so long ago that it doesn't even matter anymore," she answered before hearing him start up with another story only to hear him stop mid-sentence. "What happened?" she questioned in more of a whispered tone. "You can tell me anything, I don't judge anyone," she added.

There was no stopping this girl. She just wanted to know what happened. Rudy scratched the back of his head. He took a deep breath and continued, "Well... we decided to have a special time. We took our clothes off, and had sex. Right about where we are standing. But it wasn't just that simple. I didn't have protection on me. But we ignored the fact and just kept on going. We weren't aware of how high the risk of pregnancy was, but thank god she decided to pick up a morning after pill. I was saved from being a teenage, irresponsible father. I don't know if I could have cared for a child at the age. Rudy was not done. He needed to warn Cassandra. He took another breath and continued on, "But promise me one thing. When you decide that you have found the right boy to go all the way with, make sure he is packing protection. I wouldn't want to see you have to suffer or have your father be angry with you."

Cassandra smirked and just shook her head, "I don't think you need to worry about that. Though there is one question I need to ask you. Why do you care so much about me? We just met not even two hours ago," she questioned as she sat down on one of the hay bales and looked up at the male standing before her.

"I mean, don't get me wrong. I like knowing that you care. But I don't understand why," she added as she tucked her hair behind her ears. She looked into the man's eyes as she awaited for his response. She was always taught to hold eye contact when she was speaking to someone, it was always the polite thing to do and it was something that just became second nature to her.

There was not an easy answer for Cassandra's question. Rudy had a tough time even speaking of what was coming next, but he went on "Here's the answer then. I-I messed up once before. Not with having sex, but with my sister. I let her go out with some douche that was in the same grade as I was. I was a senior and my sister was just a sophomore. Me and the rest of the grade knew the guy was bad news. He just moved in from some other place he ran out of. So anyway... he decided to hit on my sister. His tricks worked and she fell for him. One night I was at home when my sister was going out with the guy. We argued as she was about to leave. I told her to stay. I haven't seen my sister ever since. Nor have my parents seen her. We don't know if she is dead or alive. No positive word from the police on their search for her. It's been about six years."

Rudy tried holding back his tears. It was one of the few things that upset him in life. He took a deep breath and exhaled. He repeated that once more before finally answering her question. "I actually see a lot of my sister in you. You look a little bit like her, but she was just like you. No boy was into her, but she didn't let that bother her. I guess having one guy flirt with her went right to her head. I just don't want you to disappear like my sister did. I know you father would be devastated without you. "
