Angel Name:
Arolak
Human Name:
Jude Miller
Gender:
Male
Age:
612. Appears to be in his early twenties
Ward:
Human Three
Personality:
Arolak can come across as a very reserved kind of person, but he is very passionate about what he believes in, displaying a great enthusiasm for whatever it is that holds his interest at that moment. He tends to float along until something grabs him and then he works extremely hard at that given subject. Arolak can be extremely defensive if his own ideals are questioned by other people, but if an event causes his beliefs to be thrown into question, he can admit that he might be wrong. He is pretty idealistic, trying to see the good in everyone and everything and is fiercely loyal to the people he cares about. He's not one to intentionally take the lead of the group, but when he can, Arolak tries to get everyone heard. Arolak is a very private person, and somewhat self-conscious. He tends to take a step back from any conflicts, not wanting to get involved in a fight with someone, but if two other people are fighting, Arolak would be one of the first to step in and try and break it up. He has a pretty sarcastic sense of humour and a hell of a temper if you're the unlucky soul who gets him riled up.

Gabriel looked at the envelopes in his hands. Each envelope carried the name of an angel in gold ink. Marmaroth, Amadeus Dermot, William Moore and Arolak. Each envelope contained information on their new wards. All four wards were humans with terminal illnesses. Four humans who were little more than children. Gabriel shook his head, not for the first time wondering why the young and innocent suffered while tyrants seemed to live forever. Transforming into his human form, his wings vanishing into his shoulder blades and his robes replaced by a grubby looking suit, Gabriel hid the envelopes in his inside pocket and set off to find the angels. America had gotten to be such a busy place. He could remember watching the first settlers make their homes here. There were a few towns where life remained simple and quiet, but like much of the world, most of the country was heavily populated and life was anything but simple.

Marmaroth was the first angel he found. He handed the envelope with her name over to her, saying very little other than, “You know what to do from here.” He had always been business like in his approach. The whole ‘I bring glad tidings’ shtick had got boring quite a while ago and was far too time consuming. Zipping across the grand ol’ state of Texas, Gabriel tracked down William and Amadeus, handing each angel their respective envelopes.

When he found Arolak, the angel was cradled in a tree, watching the clouds float across the sky. Gabriel cleared his throat to get Arolak’s attention. Arolak looked over out of the corner of his eye, snapping to attention when he realised who was standing there. Arolak jumped down from the tree, landing in a crouch,“Work?” He asked.

Gabriel handed over the envelope, which Arolak all but tore from his hands. When Arolak looked up, Gabriel had vanished. Shrugging, Arolak skimmed over the information of his new ward. Miles Bruner. Huh, he was getting a guy this time. That was new.Osteosarcoma. That wasn’t so new. So many of the wards he’d had had been close to death.
Here’s hoping you stay alive a little longer kid.

That had been a week ago. Since then, Arolak had been following Miles at a distance, shadowing his every move and learning as much as he could about Miles before stepping up and becoming his guardian angel. Boy, did he love his job. Arolak was sat on top of the building that stood proudly opposite the store Miles worked in. So far, this was what he had learned; Miles lived with his mother, his father was absent for whatever reason, and Miles was angry, he had every damn right to be angry though, he was dying for chrissake, and he worked in a bike shop.

And now, here Arolak sat, mulling over the best way to introduce himself. The world was less open to religion now and he wasn’t sure how well ‘Hi I’m your Guardian Angel and I’m here to be your guide to the next life’ was going to go down with someone who was acutely aware of their own mortality. Arolak ran off the back of the building, landing in the same neat crouch he had when Gabriel had handed him his envelope. Brushing himself off, Arolak folded his wings away, looking, for all intents and purposes, human. He crossed the street to the bikestore and began browsing; hoping he looked a little lost and that it would be Miles who came over. That would make his life so much easier.

The week had been a dreary one. Miles leaned back in his wheely chair, listening to Motorhead. He spun the wheel of the half completed bike in front of him and tried really, really hard to actually remember the past few days. They all just kind of blended into one long turgid mush of boredom, insomnia, and frustration. The limp had officially set in, Miles noted, looking down at his right knee. Covered by his jeans, it looked just like any other knee would, but Miles knew that underneath, a tumor grew steadily. His doctor had bought him a cane two weeks ago. Said it would be best not to agitate it as much as possible. Too bad for him. Miles isn't gonna walk around like some kind of invalid, alright? Anyways, Miles was enough of a living, breathing pity party as it was.

A gust of cold air indicated that the front door had been opened. Miles looked up to see a guy around his age walk in. Miles thought that after living in this town for most of his life he'd be able to recognize a person his age, but his face eluded him. Must be new. The poor guy looked lost. Taking a earphone out of his ear, Miles cleared his throat. "You looking for something?"
The question was blunt and to the point. Not exactly friendly, but helpful enough.

He pushed himself out of the chair and made his way towards the stranger, painfully and self-consciously aware that his limp was on full display.

"You looking for something?"

Arolak turned to see Miles standing there, his posture leaning slightly to one side. Miles' face was all angles and almost-maturity. The pack hadn't said anything about Miles being in a relationship. From his time among the mortals and watching them, Miles had the kind of face that got snapped up very quickly. Arolak shook his head, snapping himself from the daze he had gotten himself into, "I..uh...yeah," Arolak felt his tongue go heavy and his mouth dry up. Before he could stop himself, his Angel instinct kicked in, I'm your Guardian Angel and I'm here to guide you through this life, steering you through it's obstacles and attending to your spiritual needs," Arolak spoke quickly and his eyes widened when he realised he was talking, " I'm just going to go outside for a minute," Arolak finished a little awkwardly, leaving the store, and Miles to comprehend what had just happened.

Arolak jammed his hands in his pockets and kept his head down and he took a stroll around the block. He had built himself up to not resort straight to the Guardian Angel shtick, to go about it like a normal human being. And what had he done? The exact opposite of what he was intending to do. Finishing his walk around the block, Arolak once again stood outside the bike store he had left Miles in. He braced his hand against the glass, feeling its coolness on his fingertips.

He took a deep breath and pushed the door open again, heading straight to Miles, "Sorry about that, I kind of freaked out," Arolak took a deep breath, feeling much calmer this time around "So, allow me to start over. I am Arolak, your Guardian Angel. I am here, among other things, to be your guide through this life and to attend to your needs as best I can," Arolak let out a small sigh of relief,"And, uh, sorry if I freaked you out earlier. It was...It was unintentional," He finished, scratching the back of his head.

Miles watched the newcomer carefully, not too sure what to expect. This guy didn't seem to be the type to be looking for a sports bike. Far too scrawny. Cute, though, Miles noted, skimming the full lips and blue eyes. Definitely not too bad... Miles mentally shook his head. What is up with him? Like he should be looking for a relationship right now. He's already dragging his mom down a spiralling pit of depression and it would do no good for anybody to drag this poor guy down with him.

"I... uh... yeah," The newcomer began. "I'm your Guardian Angel and I'm here to guide you through this life, steering you through it's obstacles and attending to your spiritual needs."

Miles stared at the guy, dumbfounded. Wha- "I'm just going to go outside for a minute."

He watched, eyebrows knitted in confusion and mouth slightly open as the guy awkwardly pulled open the door and left. What had just happened? Miles was used to the glances of pity, but this was the first time anyone actually tried to make fun of him for it. He'd just assumed that people knew better than to mess with him, and they were right. What asshole convinced this poor sap to do his bullying for him? Miles fumed at the door. If it were any other situation, Miles wouldn't think twice about running out and teaching this guy a lesson. But, with his leg throbbing from the tension in his body, Miles knew he wouldn't make it around the block. Out of nowhere, the door pushes open again, and the stranger was in the store again. Miles' hands clenched into fists.

"Sorry about that, I kind of freaked out. So, allow me to start over. I am Arolak, your Guardian Angel. I am here, among other things, to be your guide through this life and to attend to your needs as best I can. And, uh, sorry if I freaked you out earlier. It was...It was unintentional."

Without thinking, Miles grabbed the guy by the collar of his shirt and pushed him against the wall of the store. What was this guy's game? Why did he come back? Miles leaned in closer to glare at the stranger.

"Listen, I don't know who you think you are," Miles growled, "But you're messing with the wrong guy. Who the hell put you up to this?"

Arolak watched Miles carefully as he processed the information. There were those who didn't take well to Angels. Arolak hoped that Miles wasn't one of those people. Unfortunately for Arolak, it seemed Favour was not on his side today. Miles had grabbed Arolak by the collar and had him pinned against the wall. Oh boy, if looks could kill, Arolak would be dust beneath his feet.

"Listen, I don't know who you think you are," Miles growled, "But you're messing with the wrong guy. Who the hell put you up to this?"

Arolak held up his hands in a universal sign of surrender as best he could given that his movement was somewhat restricted,"I have no intention of messing with you Miles," He answered, keeping his voice calm and measured, "I swear I speak the truth to you. I was given a message by Gabriel to guide you and watch over you." It was then that Arolak realised that his human form might not be the most convincing way of persuading Miles that he was an Angel. He grappled with Miles' hands, trying to loosen them from his collar. Arolak sighed when he realised his method wasn't working. He looped his arms through Miles' and twisted, forcing Miles to let go.

Arolak stepped away from Miles and unzipped his jacket, unceremoniously dumping it on the floor next to his feet, keeping his eyes on Miles all the while. He held a hand up to keep Miles at bay, "I can prove I'm an Angel, okay?"When Arolak was sure Miles wasn't about to try and kill him, Arolak lifted his t-shirt over his head, leaving his torso bare. Arolak took a deep breath and closed his eyes, letting himself switch through to his Angel form. He didn't usually show his true form so soon but Miles needed convincing and this seemed to be the best way to go about it. When he opened his eyes, his wings stretched out behind him. They were pure white from tip to tip, almost touching the walls of the store. Arolak let his wings drop down behind him, the feathers brushing along the floor, "Is this at least slight more convincing?" He asked, holding his arms out to the side, waiting for Miles' answer.
