Jackie Rayleigh

Full Name
Jacquelyn Rayleigh

Nicknames
Jackie, Lynn

Race
Human

Gender
Female

Age
Twenty-eight

Occupation
Information broker, burglar and cutpurse

Appearance
With her amber eyes, bleach blonde hair and light skin, Jackie barely stands out from the varied backgrounds and appearances of her fellow human kind. Despite her rotten, poor and broken lifestyle, the young woman retains a healthy physique and natural beauty with her tall, curvaceous and voluptuous body - And she still has all her teeth, surprisingly! She shows some lean muscle due to her day-to-day practices in burglary, but her body leans much more towards a lithe and agile build as opposed to something even remotely athletic. Jackie has long, silky hair tied in a single ponytail that just about touches waist-length, while two bangs are combed to fall alongside her ears. Her light skin, closely bordering the pale spectrum, is fairly unscathed safe for some accidental scarring from her endeavours.

Personality
Jackie is a girl of a thousand faces and voices, using her cunning, quick wit and charm to coax her victims into doing what she wants. Her true personality, however, differs entirely from the professional facade that allows her to deal with the harshness of society and the dark criminal circuits the young woman grew up in. While there is a definite "Dragged to Hell and back" attitude underlining Jackie's somewhat roughened exterior and colourful... vocabulary, she is far from the usual scoundrels that prowl the night in search of their next unwilling pay-check. Focused more on charming her way into getting her money's worth, Jackie is extremely sociable, read flirtatious, with strangers and friends alike, treating everyone on a sort of equal level regardless of their race, ethnicity or social class.

Although her concern for strangers may very well be for personal gain, Jackie's care for the people she trusts and her need to keep them from certain harm is truly beyond comparison. However, she still retains a somewhat selfish, often greedy outlook and wouldn't mind taking advantage of anyone who foolishly trusts her without truly knowing her - Of course, there have been exceptions in this regard, but rarely. Jackie is also extremely cocky and confident in both herself and her abilities. She doesn't necessarily feel the need to prove her worth to others, but can find simple pleasure in bragging about her latest accomplishments to great extents. Although this is usually reserved for private circles, even if she does tell an exaggerated story in public it's often a flat-out lie.

Gear
Not being able to afford the shiniest weapons on display, Jackie has had to use her imagination on more than one occasion when it came down to weaponry. Her main tool is a giant nail, roughly the size of a dagger, attached to a long steel chain whose purpose is to serve as a poor man's grappling hook and a weapon when the situation calls for it. She also carries around a custom handgun that's been modified to rapidly discharge small nails at a high velocity. The dull-grey gun is fitted with two separate ammo slots, and retains its light carrying-weight. It does, however, relinquish the massive range and speed its original design had.

Skills
Jackie is a committed thief in the field, able to use charm, wit and deft hands to get whatever she desires from her victims. She also possesses adequate mercantile skills, specifically bargaining and fencing hot merchandise, through her life-long experience as an information broker for the nobles. Jackie has honed some combative capabilities in the hit-and-run, dirty fighting department, and can effectively utilize her weapons to cripple potential threats.

History
Is there a glorified way to tell the story of some backwater street-rat turned resourceful thief and broker? Probably not. Lives in the shadows of the damned do not tend to be epics worthy of a place in the history books. Not that said lives would want to...

Born as the inconvenient and unwanted child of a crime lord and a whore who had long since past her expiration date, Jackie grew up in a literal hive of scum and villainy. The muggings of unsuspecting pedestrians, the murder of an innocent young woman left for dead after having been savagely raped. There was no doubt that Jackie would meet what civil society referred to as: Hell on Earth. A dark place that no sane person would want to grow up in. To Jackie, however, this.... "filth". This place of lies and abuse, where literally nothing was sacred, was nothing different to growing up in a less run down place. It was home, a fucked up home. With her parents barely in the picture, if ever, Jackie was forced to mature and learn the basis of survival all on her own by scouring a cruel place at a very young age. She would beg for dimes and eat the leftover rotten meals that were dumped in the nearest bin.

She had nobody that looked out for her, nobody to turn to for help but her own damn self. Maybe the odd passerby who was kind enough to toss out some clothes, food or money every now and then, but nothing more. Jackie was quick to adapt to the "kill or be killed" mentality that her environment seemed to uphold, and it wouldn't be long until she moved on from innocently begging for things to just taking whatever she needed, whenever she wanted. Jackie's newly acquired infamy among the riffraff as an information dealer caught the swift attention of merchants and nobles wanting to make use of her talents in gaining the upper hand on their fellow man, something Jackie often turned to her own advantage by playing for both sides. It never earned her much money, but enough to afford a night's stay at the local inn and three meals a day.

Her famed talents eventually led the woman to the biggest job yet, to bring to light the true intentions of the current dictator queen as per request of a woman by the name of Nora Belenko. Swayed by her curiosity and the promise that an out-of-the-blue idea would come to fruition, Jackie took months upon months to dig out every dirty little secret that the queen kept hidden from the public eye and report her findings to her employer. Down the long line of gathering a copious amount of proof, Jackie found herself intrigued as her employer's suspicion proved to be true and worrisome. The latter mutually shared. Not that Jackie ever spoke of her personal thoughts on the people and things she "investigated" - Especially not with her employers. It was strictly business, and her opinions didn't matter unless she was specifically paid to give one.

As the final days of her job description came to an end and the last pieces of the intricate puzzle had been fitted, Jackie assisted in Nora's plans to set the ominous discovery ablaze the following night before making their silent escape. Of course, making sure to leave not a single trail behind for someone to chase. Jackie felt it was only right to help Nora one more time by providing a safe haven while she tried to locate the mysterious Corsair Knights. The woman knows her companion is eager to join these wanna-be crusaders, but she herself is not yet convinced to help make a change in the world and its many inhabitants...

“It should be around here somewhere...” Muttered Jackie pensively as she tried to figure out which one of the identical looking slum-houses was supposed to be the ridiculously named 'The Hide, The Hog and The Herring', a pub that one of Jackie's so-so colleagues highly recommended she'd check out in case of emergencies. Poking her head around on of the many corners in the lower town district, Jackie came to an abrupt halt.

“Oi!” She shouted, finding her path blocked by a flock of people. “What's going on here?” With a growl, Jackie tried to find higher ground to see what this ruckus was about. Not too far past the crowd, Jackie spotted a single man standing atop a make-shift podium shouting a bunch of baloney about rising up and making a stand. “Hey, Nora!” She turned her head and beckoned for her companion to come closer. “Lookie here!”

Nora moved closer to Jackie so as to get a better view of the man. It was hard not to notice him, especially at that volume. It seemed he was trying to rally the people against the queen. A commendable goal, however... marching over to the queen's castle gates to protest would result in nothing at best, and getting filled full of arrows at worst. Much to her horror, it seemed that the man had managed to convey that this was a good idea, and the crowd was preparing to march to the castle. Without even bothering to convene with Jackie on the matter, the woman simply marched out into the middle of the street in the way of the crowd and held out both arms, barring their passage.

"Wait! If you go up to the queen's gates like this then she would simply send her guards out. You would either be imprisoned or executed to a man. Do you really think that would accomplish anything?" That last question was directed at the self-appointed leader of the protest group, in which some worried chatter could be heard as doubt started to sink in.

And of course Mother Teresa had to go and spoil everything. Squirming through the audience witnessing the march of war, Jackie caught up with Nora and her pesky conscience. How many times did she need to remind her client to lay low? These heroic actions only raised the chances of getting caught.

“Ahem...” Nora's head was met with a firm slap from Jackie's palm.

“Don't be silly. They're only protesting. Surely our beloved queen isn't stupid enough to act rashly on such a thing?” A forced smile accompanied the sugar-coated words as hands nudged the woman away from an attempt to make a fool out of herself. “Give 'em Hell, mate. We'll be rooting for ya!” She hastily spoke to the wannabe rebel idiot, giving him a two-fingered salute before pulling Nora away from the much too revealing situation and into a less rowdy section of the district.

“Mind telling me what you were doing?” Her grip loosened, and eventually Jackie let go of Nora's arm. “Do you want to end up like captain McPinhead over there?” Jackie folded her arms across her chest, raising a single disbelieving eyebrow at Nora.

The ex-artificer heaved a sigh. "No, I don't... but I don't want all those people ending up like him either. You might be able to live with letting them walk off to their deaths, but I certainly wouldn't." Looking back at the group of protesters, quite a few of their number could be seen preparing to leave. Despite the majority staying, Nora was heartened to see that her actions had managed to potentially save at least some lives.

“Listen here, sweetie. I get that you're trying to be all noble and benevolent, and I respect that, but we can't save every poor sod from ending up with their skull in a glockenspiel.” Jackie turned her head to see Nora's words having persuaded some of these people to leave well enough alone. It was a relief to know not everyone in this run-down place had the self-awareness of a baked potato. Not that Jackie would ever voice such thoughts.

Reverting to her usual, blank stare, Jackie turned to face Nora once more, prodding the engineer's shoulder with her finger. “Remember, I'm responsible for getting you somewhere safe and toasty. That's my job, and I intend to finish it.” That went without saying. “After that's done and over with, I'll be off your back and you can play saviour of the people all you want.” Having shared her two cents, Jackie resumed their little walk through the slums, hoping to eventually stumble into their set destination.

Jackie returned from her friendly, and necessary, chatter with the barkeep, carrying two beer mugs over to the table where Nora was sitting quietly. “On the house.” The thief shoved one of the beverages right under the nose of her companion, smiling at the ex-artificer before occupying the empty seat opposite of her.

“Cheer up will ya? I can almost count the wrinkles on your face.” That was Jackie's best attempt to lighten the mood. While the broker felt relieved to be back indoors, it was obvious that with Nora things were a little different.

Although Jackie's words didn't exactly get Nora smiling, she accepted the beer all the same. "I still can't help but worry over what might happen to those people. It's a good thing that some of them were smart enough to leave while they still could, but... I hope the queen decides to be merciful." Taking a swig of beer, Nora nervously ran a hand over one of her cheeks. "I'm not really getting any wrinkles, am I?"

“You soon will be if you don't stop worrying about every little thing.” Jackie retorted, stifling a laugh. “I'm kidding. Still, maybe you should smile a bit more, hmm~?” The girl smirked, leaning forward in an attempt to catch Nora's gaze. “I wouldn't want you to ruin that pretty face of yours.” Jackie's hand softly patted the other girl's cheek. “That would be such a pity...”

Nora managed a smile as she brushed Jackie's hand aside. "Maybe you're right. I've done little else but worry ever since we departed. Have you managed to speak with this contact of yours?"

“Of course I did! That's why we're here. Duh!” Jackie answered underneath a mock sigh, leaning back into her seat as she felt her meagre attempt to have some fun was ignored. “He said he'd meet us here, but he hasn't shown up yet.” Jackie briefly turned her gaze towards the door as she took a swig from her drink, but she saw no sign of her contact. Honestly, it was so difficult getting proper errand boys these days.

“So while we wait, why don't we relax a bit?” Her attention, accompanied by a sweetened smile, reverted back to Nora. “You must be exhausted from all that running away...” Jackie gently slid her hand over to Nora's, her body inching forward in the same slow motion that her fingers trickled upwards from Nora's hand to her forearm. “You earned some rest, and these knights will still be here tomorrow...” The girl smiled coyly. “Don't you agree?”

"We don't even know where they are now, much less where they would be tomorrow," replied Nora. "And I would appreciate it if you kept your hands to yourself." The former artificer shook off Jackie's hand and moved her seat a couple inches further away. Nora kept an eye on the doorway in case their contact arrived, as well as distract herself from Jackie. She knew the woman would hit on damn near anyone, although she much preferred it if it wasn't her. Just then, a man in a shabby-looking coat came in, looking around warily.

"Would that furtive-looking fellow happen to be our man?" Nora asked.

Jackie nodded to Nora's question with a muffled grunt. “That's him...” In one swift motion, the thief rose from her seat. “Alright madam killjoy, you stay here and look constipated or whatever. I'll be back in a jiffy!” She commented as she left the ex-artificer and approached the neurotic man, who immediately flinched as the somewhat smaller woman got within earshot.

“Seesh, guy. If I knew you were this easily frightened, I wouldn't have hired you in the first place.” Jackie said, already making motions to unhand the valuable, or at least it was for her and Nora, information. However, such attempt was in vain as the man swiftly lifted the sealed envelope out of the greedy thief's reach. Nora watched the pair argue for a while before coming over to them.

"This is taking a lot longer than a jiffy. Need any help with speeding things along a bit?" She almost seemed to loom over both of them as she clenched her hand into an armoured fist. Seeing that Nora was prepared to back up her words with actions, the informant relented and reluctantly handed Jackie the envelope.

"This better be worth my while." The man said irritably.

Jackie snatched the envelope out of his hands, shooting her contact an evil eye before examining the note's validity. "Okay... This should about cover it." Jackie tossed the man a bit of money. "Shoo... We're done."

"So what does it say? Let me see!" Nora craned her head over Jackie's shoulder to get a better look at the note. "Looks like an address for the archive buildings in the old part of town. I know how to get there, but... it would mean having to get past that riot..."
