a character in “The Life of a Cyborg”, as played by elloit

Description

Name: Keizo Narahashi

Age: 32

Gender: Male

Appearance: (I can’t find a suitable picture at the moment so a written description will have to suffice) A shade over six foot tall, average build made bulkier by the cybernetics. He keeps his black hair close shaven (though not quite bald), and maintains a small goatee on his chin. Where skin is visible – mostly on his face and neck, though there are a few patches on his torso – it looks waxy and sallow. He is often accompanied by the faint whiff of smoke and oil, and there is a constant background hum from his cybernetics. It is obvious from looking at him that he is a cyborg, and there is no real way for him to conceal this.

Clothing: Wears bulky cargo pants to try to hide his legs, and provided the weather is cool enough a long coat to try to cover up his upper body as well. A loose T-shirt or tank top when the weather is too hot for the coat, revealing his arms but keeping most of the modifications on his torso hidden. Always wears his dog tags, though they are clearly marked to show that he is no longer active personnel.

Cyborg: Yes

Modifications: He is extensively modified, most of his organs have been replaced, and his torso is a patchwork of metal plates, dials, blinking lights and wires snaking back and forth. His arms and legs are bulky, clunky things, and the motors whine every time he moves them. The hands only have the most rudimentary sense of touch, so he has no idea of texture or temperature, only whether or not he is touching something. Though his limbs are stronger than their biological counterparts they are also heavier, so his spine is reinforced to take the strain, and they are too ungainly for him to run quickly. The top rear of his skull has been replaced with a visible metal plate within which is contained a hard drive storing his memories, compensating for brain damage he received. Occasionally it can be heard whirring as he tries to recall something. His eyes are also replacements, and they make him look like he is permanently wearing goggles, with shutters that act as eyelids. Looking him in the eye is more akin to staring down a green camera lens. All of this is powered by a large battery placed where his left lung should have been (his cybernetic right one is more than capable of compensating for the missing one), which has to be recharged for a few hours every couple of days (usually while he’s sleeping). Should this battery ever fail, he will have approximately twenty minutes to find an alternative power source or his cybernetics will start failing, eventually killing him.

Likes: Peace and quiet, taking long walks through the countryside where he is unlikely to encounter many people, the fact that he looks fairly unique compared to the modern cyborgs (even if he lacks their increased functionality).

Dislikes: Crowds (he feels too conspicuous), being late for anything, journalists.

Occupation: Scrap heap owner, part time artist.

Hobbies: Making art from scrap, reading, smokes like a chimney.

Personality: A friendly enough individual, he is a little shy due to spending most of his time isolated from the world. He usually won’t be the one starting the conversation, but if you can get him talking he’ll go on for hours. Tends to be somewhat blunt, and occasionally seems lacking in empathy, but has a good sense of humour to help make up for it. Rarely gets truly angry, though it isn’t hard to elicit a curse or two from him.

Background: Keizo is originally from a poor farming family. He had a large number of siblings, but without any real prospects of employment elsewhere due to having little education, and with the farm not bringing in enough money to comfortably support the family he decided to join the army as soon as he was old enough. He served for several years of relative peace, and never saw a warzone. When he was 23 he was critically wounded during a training exercise, when what was meant to be a dummy grenade was thrown into a small hut Keizo was meant to be “defending”. The idea was that the small pyro would make a loud bang, he would pretend to be killed, and evaluate the trainees “attacking” as they cleared the room. Except that the grenade wasn’t a dummy.
In order to try and save some face after this terrible incident, the army made sure he survived using cybernetic techniques soldiers wouldn’t normally get, but the catch was that they used the cheapest options available, largely outdated parts from the first few ages of cybernetics. Over the next two years Keizo recovered well, but was honourably discharged as soon as he was well enough and given an extra-large pay check as an incentive not to talk to the media about his ordeal. He used the money to buy a plot of land on the very outskirts of Shimada, where he now runs the local scrap-heap. The locals accept him because he mostly keeps to himself, only really venturing into the town for food and wary of the distrust many feel towards cyborgs. He spends most of his free time making sculptures out of the things people have thrown away, sometimes selling them to supplement his income.

So begins...
