Growing up, there were stories that my dad used to tell me about a man and woman who were trying to save the world. I always loved to sit and listen to him talk. I still do, to this day. Every night it was something different, some new grand adventure. The pair fell in love, defeated the ultimate enemy, and the last story he told me was how, in the end, they ended up creating something more precious than any cause they'd ever fought for.

Me.

Now, I didn't really take this seriously, not at first. Then I started noticing that strange things were beginning to happen around me. The power would suddenly short out when I tried to flip on a light switch, and when I got really angry, or really upset, or even happy, the air around me would feel charged, and my hair (frizzy enough as it is) would get fluffy and staticky. Soon, I realized I could move metal objects without having to touch them, and that was when things really started to sink in.

Perhaps my parents' stories weren't as made up as I'd originally thought.

Mom finally sat down with me, shared a little bit of what her life had been like before she met my dad. She told me that the abilities I had were because they were abilities that had been built into her, that they were dangerous, but a gift, and ones that needed to be used wisely.

I've set out to learn more about my parents' past. It's my legacy, and even though I have no idea where it's going to take me...

...I'm excited to go.

So begins...

"What if...that's what it wants us to do?"

She didn't know when she had transitioned to thinking of the threat as an 'it' rather than a 'who', but somehow it seemed to fit. She looked all around, feeling that gust of air. Realizing what she was doing, she took her hand off of 19's shoulder.

"Hey!" she shouted towards the blackness. "This isn't funny! Come out!"

A noise came from up ahead, followed by the high beam of a flashlight. Amariah stiffened, and pointed, watching as a man in a hiking suit, with a bag across his shoulders, suddenly came into view. He peered, his plain face squinted from the brightness.

"You kids okay? I heard yelling." he said. Amariah, honestly, didn't know what to say.

"I...we're...ok."

"Night hike!" The man said. "Not a big deal. I do a lot of land surveillance and keep track of the animals that come running around these parts." His smile was gentle and kind, not the least bit sinister.

"You kids should probably head back home though, and soon. Nothing good happens to young people at this time of night."

She kept her hood up, occasionally glancing around to make sure that no one was following after her. That was how it had been for the last few weeks. She kept thinking she was seeing people in the shadows, men who meant her harm. After running into that one figure last month...

She shook her head, adjusting her hood against the cold, and ducking her chin to her chest as she continued to walk down the paved path.

She didn't see the person up ahead, that she was on a collision course for the poor figure.

She cried out, her arms coming up reflexively as Skyler took her into his arms, the pair of them stumbling and falling sideways. On impact, she grunted, trying and failing to brace her hands on the ground. Most of her weight fell against the young man's chest.

"N-no! Really I...Skylar?!"

She sat up quickly, her eyes wide with surprise. "Oh my gosh! I...you're okay! It's you! I'm so sorry I disappeared. I was looking for you but I didn't know how to find you and things just got so crazy!"

Still lying on his chest, she hugged him about the neck tightly. "I'm so glad you're alright!"

"Oh, yeah, duh. Sorry." She sat up, backing off of him and sitting on her heels as she waited for him to sit up too. When she got to her feet, she pulled him up with her, then wrapped her arms around his waist and sighed.

"Things got so scary." she told him. "I think I'm going crazy, or paranoid, or both."

She finally let go of him, looking a little embarrassed at her outburst. "Sorry, she muttered again, her cheeks rosy."

"It isn't your fault. Don't tell yourself that." she replied, her eyes following his hand towards the hourglass. Her brow knit, confusion and wonder lighting up behind her eyes as she reached to take the hand that held the hourglass.

"What are you doing with that?" she asked softly. "Are we going somewhere? Or..." her eyes widened a bit. "Are you leaving?"

She would understand if he had to. They'd seen that the other was okay, after all. It made sense.

The color in her cheeks rose, eyes widening as he brushed his mouth against hers. At first, she didn't know what to do or how to respond. She'd, frankly, never been kissed before.

She closed her eyes after a moment, leaning into the caress and kissing him back. When they had ended, she felt just a little breathless, her eyes bright as she suddenly smiled.

"Heh, I don't want to leave you either." she told him with a firm nod. "I missed you. It worried me when I didn't know if you were safe or not."

Escaping dangers by jumping through time? Somehow, she didn't think that would work without some kind of major mishap. But the only other options that she had was to stay here and hide from whatever trouble came, or go back to his time and suffer the same consequences.

So, she closed her eyes, stepping close and tucking her chin against her chest as she waited for him to take them away.

"Preferably without carnivorous reptiles?" she supplemented, her lip twitching.

She opened her eyes to the sudden chaos that had gripped their surroundings. Startled by the sheer amount of violence, she found herself hovering close to Skylar, gripping him tight as a look of panic crossed her expression.

"Where are we?!" she shouted as the roar of a catapault went screaming over their heads, towards an unseen enemy that lurked in the darkness.

Shuddering, she cringed as they both stood frozen with shock, right to the point where the professor's entrance had her staring.

"Skylar," she breathed. "Is that?..."

Amariah kept her head down, her cheek tucked against Skylar's chest as the pair were urged forward. They passed by men who were dead and dying, their blood soaking into the mud that was beginning to cake her shoes. No women, she saw. The occasional serving girl was running away, screaming and crying about something. The sound was heart-wrenching. She could feel tears burning at the corners of her eyes.

Mud disappeared, replaced by stone that was well-worn with hundreds of thousands of footsteps. As they entered the inner courtyard, she could see men preparing bows and crossbows, weapons being passed around, as well as food and ale. Fewer dead men lay here, but the situation was no less deplorable.

Then they entered into the main body of the castle, where people still bustled about, but away from the noise of the war that rattled the walls of stone. Once, Amariah stumbled, her grip on Skylar the only thing keeping her from falling right to the floor. She remained silent, trying hard not to shake. The cold, damp castle could not be touched with warmth, even with the many torches that lined the walls.

"Where are we?" she whispered so only Skylar could hear.

Amariahs' eyes widened.

"No! We're friends of yours! At least...we will be. In the future. You let us borrow the artifact, and in a moment of panic we...well, we came here." Surprising herself, she stood forward, planting herself in between John and Skylar.

"You wouldn't kill an unarmed woman." she said cautiously. "You don't strike me as a man who would murder two innocents."

Her hands were shaking. She reached back to grasp Skylar's fingers.

Amariah sighed, leaning against Skylar's side as relief washed over her. Her eyes closed for a moment as she lifted a hand to rest against Skylar's chest. So...what now?

Straightening for a moment, she glanced behind them, towards the war that raged behind them. She looked back to John.

"Thank you for your understanding." she said, unable to help the weak laugh that came over her. "We've had a really rough week."

"Is the lass wearing breeches?" someone called, before laughter began to rumble around the hall. Amariah pursed her lips.

Amariah smiled at the Knight, unsure of whether or not she should hold out her hand for the other man to shake. At John's words, however, the young woman looked just a little confused.

Atlantis? Wasn't that a city of lore? Not a real place?

Breaking away from Skylar for a moment, she began to walk around, careful to avoid the men who were hard at work. How could they do this with a war raging outside? What was it that they were looking for that was so important?

She looked back to the other men, like a candle in the darkness. She was practically glowing in the soft fire-light.

Amariah nodded, smiling more in response to his pleasure at the scenario than anything else. "It's definitely got its perks."

She stepped over to a certain pile of what she assumed was junk. Broken pottery, pieces of glassware, scraps of canvas paintings...

She picked up a piece of what could have been blown glass. It was not more than a shard, but it was a beautiful shade of blue. She smiled to herself, holding it up to the light of the torch flame before slipping it into her pocket and going to rejoin Skylar.

"Have they decided what to do with us yet?" she mused thoughtfully, giving Skylar a look.

She rolled her eyes, shaking her head and reaching to grasp his hand. "How long do you think they'll have us stay?" she asked, leaning her shoulder into his chest.

"Not that I mind being a part of living history, but this is a little bit stressful.

You know that feeling that you get when you're so hyper you don't really think you can accomplish anything worthy of note? Your mind is running in a million different directions, and you can't focus long enough to follow a single train of thought. This, in turn, causes a very unique sort of mental exhaustion.

It didn't make for a pretty combination.

But that was how Amariah felt as she entered the bar, assaulted by noise and the cacophony of multiple interactions going on at the same time. She looked rather unassuming, save for the cascade of red curls that fell around her shoulders. She looked normal, unassuming, even...

...even innocent as a lightbulb she stood near suddenly burst with a loud pop. She jumped, glancing towards it, skittering sideways to avoid the pieces of broken glass.

"Oops..." she murmured under her breath.

"I really don't understand why people can't talk at a significantly lower vol--GAH!"

It was almost funny, the way she managed to maneuver around the hulking frame of the detective as he stepped back into her. With a grace that seemed far too perfect to be natural, she practically spun beneath him, watching with wide eyes as the man aimed for the floor, her arms at her sides, and a wan expression on her face.

It almost looked like her hair was starting to stand on end. Small tendrils floated above her head, as if charged with some kind of electrical energy.

"I, er..." Pursing her lips, she turned away rather abruptly, running a hand over her face and walking towards Anodyne and her groupies.

She didn't pause to stop and chat, though. Rather, she put herself at a place where she wasn't sitting too close to anyone.

A stray fork seemed to be sneaking its way across the counter, closer to her. She glanced at it sideways, her brow furrowing, before turning to stare at the counter.

That fork kept creeping.

Amariah looked ready to respond, but she was interrupted by a fork slapping against the flat of her forehead. Staggering back, and crying out in surprise (and pain), she reached to grip the utensil, all but prying it off of her face and nearly throwing it back behind the bar.

Breathing hard, she looked toward Chemo with wild green eyes, her lips pursed tight.

"Thanks." she muttered. "The fork's doing enough hitting anyway."

"It isn't my sparkling personality?"

The look of confusion on her face was convincing enough. It was her own way to be self-deprecating while in the throws of one of her many bouts of 'I don't know how the hell I'm supposed to control myself'.

"I'm honestly not sure why I even bother coming here anymore." she told Chemo, rubbing her forehead where a small red mark had begun to appear. "I just...this happens so frequently, but I'm stuck on this hope that I might be able to talk to someone without having things fly at me."

Or without accidentally electrocuting the hell out of someone when she shook their hand. As a result, she most definitely kept her hands to herself.
