Description

Image

Kuma is an absolutely enormous man (well over 5 meters tall, roughly the same size as fellow Shichibukai Gecko Moria) who is usually seen carrying a Bible. His overall appearance resembles that of a bear, though there are a few key differences. His eyes are strangely covered by either a pair of glasses or clear-mirrored lenses, while his pupils occasionally glow a bright red. His hat features a pair of rounded ears, and, along with the fabric of his pants, is covered in brown spots. His jacket contains a large white design reminiscent of both a target cross-hair and a "Chi Rho," an old Christian symbol. There are also several paw prints lining the bottom hem of his coat.

Personality

Despite his imposing figure and his past reputation, Kuma is a very calm and quiet person. In addition to his demeanor, he can also be seen as somewhat of a benevolent character, especially compared to the other Shichibukai. This assumption can be reached through some of his actions, specifically when he spared the lives of the Straw Hats on two separate occasions.

Although he obeys the commands of the World Government, Kuma disagrees with what his superiors deem "good" and "bad". Instead, Kuma strives to uphold his own ideals (described as "Moral Justice”) whenever possible. He even goes so far as to infer that Blackbeard's acceptance into the Shichibukai ranks had been a poor decision by the government, despite the fact that it filled the position left by Crocodile's defeat.

However, Kuma's loyalty does not extend to the Marines. This can be seen when he refuses to answer a direct question from Admiral Kizaru during the events in Sabaody Archipelago. Due to his unwillingness to aid the Marines without a direct order, Kuma didn't hesitate to lie when it came to his victory over the Straw Hats at Thriller Bark.

When talking, Kuma customarily uses the word "target" in his sentences. He also tends to ask a person where they would like to go on a trip before he sends them away with his Devil Fruit's power.

-ABILITIES AND POWERS-

A] Nikyu Nikyu no Mi
B]Pacifista Modifications

Kuma is the only person who has completely defeated the entire Straw Hat Crew, and did so twice. Although, the crew was extremely weak both times and they were in no shape to fight another battle, much less a Shichibukai (they recently battled other Shichibukai Gecko Moria, and in the second time, battled against a large amount of Marines, PX-4, Kizaru, and PX-1). However, he doesn't seem to want to permanently injure the Straw Hats either, having spared their lives twice, indicating he may have held back.

Kuma ate the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, making him a "Paw Paw Man". This Devil Fruit gives him paw pads which give him the power to push anything, including the air around him, at the speed of light. Kuma fights in a style reminiscent of sumo-wrestling. He crouches low in a wide stance, even using the signature stomp, and attacks with open-palm strikes, using his special paws to launch air bullets. Much in keeping with the sumo inspiration, Kuma spends almost all of his time with his feet planted, refusing to give his ground.

The fruit's powers also somehow allows him to move at the same speed as the objects he pushes, appearing instantaneously at a desired location regardless of distance, all the while he moves no more than a slow walk. Some mistaken this as a form of teleportation.

The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, also known as the Nikyu Nikyu Fruit, is a Paramecia type Devil Fruit which was eaten by the Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma. This Devil Fruit bestows its user the ability to push anything they touch, and is physically represented as paw pads on the user's palms. These paw pads also seem to be permanently engraved into the user, as Kuma is always seen wearing gloves when his powers are not in use.

The fruit's name, Nikyu, comes from the word "Nikukyuu" which means paw pad in Japanese.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The first and foremost strength of the fruit, as demonstrated by Kuma, is that the user is able to push practically anything they touch and send it flying at extremely high speed. This includes both tangible materials such as people and objects, and intangible materials such as air, the ghosts generated by the Horo Horo no Mi user and the sensation of physical pain. This power offers the user an incredible advantage in battle, allowing them to deflect any physical attacks. They are also able to harness their abilities to perform offensive maneuvers, such as repelling the very air around them at magnificent speeds. These attacks are so powerful that they can leave paw-shaped imprints in rock.

One misconception about the powers of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi is that it gives its user the ability to transport at will. This is incorrect, however. Rather than teleport, Kuma uses the awesome speed of his Devil Fruit power to propel himself across certain distances.

While the user is able to deflect attacks, they can only do so by using their bare hands. If the user's hands are otherwise occupied, being caught off guard for instance, they will receive damage from an attack that could have been otherwise averted. In Kuma's case, however, this weakness is compensated by his transformation into a high-functioning, thick-armored cyborg.

Aside from this unique case, the user suffers the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.

Usage

The fruit's bestowed powers, as used by Kuma, have been used for a variety of uses. The majority of them are attacks that when executed, leave a paw-pad imprint resembling the pads on his palms.

Objects repelled by Kuma using the Devil Fruit's powers travel at incredible speeds.

Kuma is also able to use his powers to push out the pain and fatigue from the body of another person. These sensations are then manifested into a red bubble resembling a paw. With this technique, the pain the original person suffered can be transferred to another through direct physical contact with the bubble. This transfer leaves the recipient in agonizing pain, and the benefactor feeling healthy and energized though their wounds are not healed.

The named techniques that are used by Kuma that involve the Devil Fruit are as follows:

Pad Cannon (Pado Hou): Kuma repels the air around him, sending a devastating blast toward his opponent. The blast can travel directly through the body of the victim and continue into the distance, leaving paw imprints in its wake. Anyone and anything that is in the path of the blast receives damage.

Hundred Pad Cannon (Tsupari Pado Hou): Kuma first plants both feet firmly on the ground by means of a sumo-style foot stomp. Then, throwing his palms forward multiple times, Kuma fires a large number of "pressure shots" at an enemy. The way he pushes his palms forward and the stance he takes while performing this technique resemble those used commonly in sumo wrestling.

Ursa Shock (Urususu Shokku):Kuma gathers air with his palms and compresses it into a bubble which resembles a paw-print. Once the bubble is small enough to fit within his hands, he releases the compressed air and sends it toward his opponent. The air quickly decompresses, causing a massive explosion. The force of this blast was enough to knock out most of Kuma's targets on Thriller Bark, as well as encompass the entire island and a sizable portion of the ocean. "Ursa" is Latin for bear.

Pacifista Modifications

Kuma is a cyborg modified by Dr. Vegapunk. His body is able to withstand most attacks, including Sanji's kicks and even the attack of Zoro, which was able to cut through steel. Zoro could only leave a scratch on Kuma with a surprise attack. With his modifications, he is an incomplete weapon of the World Government and the Marines, called a "Pacifista".

As a Pacifista, Kuma was installed with an electronic scope that can identify noted criminals, and a laser launcher in his mouth, which not only causes massive explosions upon detonation, but can also melt steel. The latter power was a copy of Kizaru's Pika Pika no Mi powers. Although the replica units of Kuma possesses such weapons on their palms as well, Kuma himself instead has his paws engraved, which makes him superior to them. Another difference is that Kuma himself still possesses his own free will, unlike the replicas.

Quickpaw Hurojo awakes after having been asleep for several years. Around the area was only void. It was empty. Dark. Cold. "Where... where have the spirits placed me?" He started patting his body all over; ensuring that he was corporeal. "Not dead; that's a plus." Though there was no time to lose. If he was corporeal, that likely means that he could return to the world he knew, and hopefully return to his king. He began running, hoping to find an exit to this ethereal obscurity.

Sibael Rhodwyn looked around, finally staring one of the strangers in the face, "I don't remember you. Any of you, to be frank."
