Beibhinn

A young female Harpy who races to survive and loves every minute of it.

0 · 1,908 views · located in Sol Avenue and Lady Une Drive

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by CelticCat

Description

Beibhinn is a young female Harpy of the Moluccan Cockatoo breed. Known as White Wash on the racing circuit, she possessed pure white hair that comes to a short bob. The majority of her feathers are also white or gray, covering her arms, chest and legs. She also has a long tuft of tail feathers that form a tail to help her stay balanced while airborne. Another, much smaller, tuft of feathers can be found at the back of her head, a mullet special to Cockatoo Harpies which folds upward according to her emotional state. Her wingspan is roughly eight feet in length and covers almost the same amout in area.

As for her more humanesque traits, she has very clear, light green eyes. They can almost be seen as yellow, depending on the lighting of wherever she happens to be. Her body type is awkwardly lithe, as any girl of her age might have, though she shows signs of becoming more significantly curvy as she matures fully. She seems to be about halfway through her puberty stage, in reference to her age, though she weighs a bare 47 pounds due to the hollow bone structure of her kind. She stands about five foot five inches, being one of larger types of Harpies.

Personality

Beibhinn has a very wild and free persona, always seeking out adventure and excitement. However, she is still very immature for the most part. She tends to be fairly loud and exuberant about everything, but can become quiet if startled or scolded. She has learned to be somewhat manipulative, because of her lack of family, and uses this to get what she needs to survive, or even just what she wants. However, this also means she can act fairly mature for her age, understanding the atmosphere and reacting appropriately.

Equipment

Her only equipment is her own body, it's agility and speed, and whatever money she can make from the flying circuit.

History

Most of Beibhinn's history is a mystery, even to herself. She has no known family members or any connections to anything. When she entered the racing circuit to get money to live off of, she was barely ten and had only a name to offer. Fortunately for her, she showed immense talent for the sport, able to fly extremely quickly due to her agile body and the fact that Harpies are very hard to come by. She quickly climbed the ranks, giving her enough to make a decent living up to the current.

So begins...

"Is that all ye can say, darlin'? I must admit, a wee bit disappointed be I. Me bet on racer didn't even finish third today, and now me own estranged daughter can barely look at me." A sniffle of disgust. "Can't be claimin' I be surprised. Nah, not this old sea dog." The cool breeze did wonders to help clear his head, even if it was just a bit. The crow feet around his eyes pinched in on themselves harshly as he squinted against the harsh day's light. He'd spent most of it in his personal watch box, his crow's nest, watching the event. He'd give mostly anything to see Beib out there again, but the likeliness of that ever happening was slim, non-existent, imaginary. No, he wouldn't like it, but Lucifer accepted it for now. No sense fighting her on it even, not with the baby coming around. Maybe later.

"I be trustin' that Noonan delivered me news to ye? Me heir makes portfall on the morrow and there be a sort of...party to welcome him back. He's matured real nice, and I'll be trusting him with the keys to one of me gambling dens, the real big one. I be getting to old to run the whole show by meself anymore." He turned his head to stare at her, the purple avian on his shoulder squawking loudly in his ear, its thrill cry mis-matching the small, faint, frost thin smile on his lips.

Beibhinn closed her eyes briefly and took in a breath, trying to steady her emotions enough for the conversation. "She mentioned it briefly. I'm not sure if I'll make an appearance or not. I haven't been feeling well." The proof was in the baggy eyes, the gaunt look in her face, and the slumped position on the couch. But of course, her physical health wasn't her main concern with the "party." No, she was mainly concerned with her emotional state, and that wasn't faring any better.

Beibhinn glanced briefly at Lucifer before she allowed them to drift over his shoulder and back to the floor. "I'll see how I'm feeling by tomorrow night," she whispered quietly. She didn't know what answer he really wanted, so mostly she was fishing for his response.

"Its ya own choice, aye. I'd like ta see ya there all the same, but no pressure this time." He crossed his hands behind his back and rocked on his heels, keeping his gaze focused out the window with a chirp and a whistle. "How ya feelin' otherwise? Hows the wee babe? How be yeself?" A tad too many questions but good enough for now. He'd get a report from the doctor later, if he wasn't one of those types to stick to being all...private about there patients. Still, everyone had a price, to be extorted or paid if need be.

After she'd give her brief responses, if any at all, Lucifer would continue to rock, still whistling softly between his words. "There be lotsa food. Maybe some of your company from back in ya racing days." He didn't mention his son, for obvious reasons. It tended to set her on edge of late, and for now, he wanted to avoid it. For health reasons. He cared too deeply already for his unborn grandson.

Beibhinn fidgeted slightly under her blanket before slowly nodding as she pondered over each question carefully. "I'm...I'm tired. A little nauseous...I...I guess it's fine..." she whispered quietly in response. She laid her head back against the couch and let her eyes drift back out the window as she tried to relax herself.

Her stomach growled softly at the mention of food and she began to nibble at her lower lip in thought. "Oh...? I don't really remember them anymore. I never really made any real friends." Her tone turned bitingly chill for a mere moment before she resettled into the passive, exhausted tone again. "I'll try to make an appearance, Mr. Fortuna...however briefly...I'll pick something nice out later, alright? Something the maids have to help me into..." Wings and talons didn't make for easy dressing and when left to her own devices, she ended up in what seemed like strips of cloth tied around her.

"Ya don't be having ta make yerself uncomfortable on me own behalf, Beib. Not while yer in that condition. Health and comfort first. And I be glad to hearin' that yer fine, overall. I arranged yer first major checkup for the day after tomorrow, and yer rehab coach, the Noonan lady, will have some herbs to help flush that poison from ye veins, when yer feeling up to it. Ye might be having to go cold turkey completely, what with the wee babe and all." No telling how the medicine, however natural, would react with a child inside its body.

"Ye know yer allowed to walk the grounds and such. Go anywhere as long as ye have a chaperon off the property. Ye can go to the pool, the fountain, the garden, the hedge maze. Ye don't have to coop yerself up in this room all day, like ye have been." Truly, Lucifer wanted to create a better home for her this time, for no other reason than for her to stay after the child was born. Not that she'd have a choice in the matter anyway, at least not one that would be good for her child. "Yer exercises start soon, today if ye'd like them to." He let it linger once more, wanted it all to sink in.

Beibhinn listened silently, watching the birds flit around outside as he spoke, tuning him out slightly. It didn't much matter what the content was anymore, the sound of his voice put on her on edge, made her more anxious than she already was. She shivered as another chill wind blew in through the windows and clutched the blanket closer around herself. "Maybe later...I just want to rest for a while, Mr. Fortuna."

No matter how she tried, Beibhinn couldn't quite get herself to come to terms with everything that had brought her to this moment. Lucifer hovering over her like an actual parent, pregnant, drugs floating around in her system and clogging her thoughts, him coming home...It was too much, all of it. She desperately wanted to pretend that her life hadn't changed at all, at least then she'd know what to expect each moment of the day. But now...Beibhinn let out a haggard sigh as she tried to pull the window she laid under shut again. "Maybe in a few days, when I've...settled back in more."

"Call me a broken record, but I be sayin' its all up to yer preference again. I not be forcing a thing on ya that isn't for yet own good or the chicks. Baby. What do ye call a baby harpy, really?" He asked the question to no one in particular, and truthfully, he didn't get an answer. From the corner of his eye, he saw her efforts and decided to close it for her, now standing directly beside her, if just for a few seconds. The violet man moved away quickly, and a loud pop of his knee joint broke the silence. His body was getting...old. There was no stopping that. Inherited life spans only kept a man from dying by the hands of another or himself, not from natural causes...And life was getting...boring.

"If ye be wondering what me plans are for all of this. You, the babe, Harb, me business, me fortune, all of it, well...Ye will never be forgiving me, and I don't want ye too. Ye'd be weak for doing it." A hand on her head, soothing her slightly agitated mohawk back down. "But I'd be leaving ye something aside from the aforementioned agreements to ye. The house. For ye and yer child. Would ye like that Beib? Or do ye want nothing to do with this place?" Luci's stare was like that of a Catholic priest of Earth, even if neither of them knew what that meant.

Harsh. Judgmental. Damning. Intense. Powerful.

Beibhinn instinctively jerked away from his hand slightly, but she stopped herself partway and allowed him the physical touch. He was the only one left that gave her little tokens of affection, after all, no matter how emotionless or selfish they really were. Her eyes closed as she felt warmth slowly ebbing back around her as the wind stopped stealing the heat from her body.

She didn't respond to his question for a while, though she did briefly open her eyes to get a glance at his expression. She could feel his eyes digging into her and it was almost enough to cause her eyes to water a little. She swallowed and forced a yawn before nodding uncertainly. "Th...Thank you. Mr. Fortuna. I have no other home to live in...after all." Her previous adopted mother's house had "mysteriously" burned to the ground shortly after "Momma" and "Uncle" disappeared from the face of the planet. Honestly, the decor wasn't so terribly different from that home, either. They both had an air of wealth, elegance, luxury...All things that she'd grown attached to, despite how alien they made her feel.

"Yer thanks be appreciated, I assure ya." He ran his hand through her hair feathers one more time before withdrawing his hand, his attention turning to the room's phone. It hadn't rung, but Lucifer picked it up anyway, dialing in the number to the kitchen. "Oy, chef. I be wanting some food brought up to Beib's room. Bring me an extra limey, extra tequila-y margarita, a wild mushroom risotto, and whatever fresh fish ye got in today. Oh, and a grapefruit." He'd then turn to the harpy. "Anything ye be in the mood for? I got him on hold for a minute."

He'd give her time to respond, thinking over some of his plans in his head. In truth, it was swarming with possibilities. This month was a record month for his accountant, as all the books, even the less than legal ones, came out in the green, only one breaking even. None in the red. All of his investments were paying off, one in particular in triplicate. Still...it was just more money. Something he wasn't short on...and truly wasn't sure if he wanted anymore. Gold was one thing, it had a weight to it, but this world ran on that damned digital currency...

Beibhinn sunk farther into the cough and resnuggled herself into the throw, trying not to dwell on anything he said. All of it made her feel...anxious, on edge. She half wanted to fling herself out the window and fly away, but no...No, that wasn't an option anymore. Her attempts to flee had stacked up against her and now her only choice was to stay in this home. No mater how he turned her stomach, no matter how hard she wished to be free...

"One of the maids should have already delivered him an order for me...I'm sure he's already received it." She reached a taloned hand up to her head and smoothed her hair down a little bit more. Something made her miss the touch...or perhaps she just wanted to wipe his slime from her hair. "So, I should be fine..."

"Well, if that be the case, I'll just be hanging up then. Bye bye food-man." He chortled, practically throwing the phone down before twirling back around, looking for something to sit down before finally just saying "Fuck it merrily!" and thumping onto the floor with a half smile, half grimace of a man too old to be acting so rough with his own body. After his head cleared, Luci ran a hand across his beard, as if debating something. He was piling so much on her at once, but, aye, it all needed to be said at some point or anything.

"I want you ta talk to me, Beibhinn. About what ya did after ye ran off. I won't be asking for names or address, I already be having people scour the slums for information for me. I just be wanting to know...do ya have any idea who the father be? Do ye know what drugs ye be on, cause there ain't no use for a blood test or a lie detector, I be knowing ye hooked on something." There was the slightest bit of mirth in his voice as he looked up at her, his amber-orange eyes shimmering. "And I be knowing this could be hard on ye to open up about, but...eh...call me concerned and curious. Most sincerely."

Beibhinn slowly turned her face to his direction, her eyes deadening as she simply thought over how she could answer the questions to any degree of certainty. She finally let her eyes drop back to the floor as she took a deep breath. "Everyone I lived with on the streets...are either dead or caught up in gang, prostitution ring, or drug cartel. I tried to ease into one, and it didn't end well. The person who offered me the...job was cruel. Manipulative. He didn't care about any of us, least of all his 'exotic pet.' I traded sexual favors for food and shelter, so no. I don't know who the father is. I couldn't even give you a list shorter than ten names."

Her face turned to one of disgust and spite just before she swiveled it back to the window. The bright red mohawk raised against her pale white feathers was her only expression to him now. "I don't know what drug or drugs I was on. I doubt I was supposed to. I only even found out when I told him I wanted to leave. I only knew when I was hooked!" She spat the last word like a curse and burrowed farther into the blanket as if seeking escape.

Lucifer let it all sink in for just a moment. Something that made Lucifer as dangerous as he was, was the fact that his face could never be read accurately. Anger could be disguised as mirth. Fear and giddy excitement. Happiness as despair. But he didn't even try to hide it this time. He was furious. For a moment, the Slums appeared in his head, blazing, on fire, screams billowing forth like dark black smoke, and that alone brought a smile, if bitter and brief. It reminded him of his island home, on another world, and he would bring it full circle once again. Perhaps as his parting gift to the world on his death bed. A new grudge was born onto his heart.

"Thank you for telling me Beib. Must've been hard, I understand that better than ye know." Lucifer then did not understand the feeling that came over him. It was like a rock, cold and hard, sitting in his stomach. The anger flew out of him and something else crept in, and he wasn't familiar with it...Little did he know, it was pity. And a tinge of guilt, however absurd that was. No. That would be his final gift to the world as Lucifer Fortuna. A grand funeral pyre. Even if it took years, because, well, who knew when he'd die.

They'd sit in silence for a long time, or however long it'd take for Beib to be the one to break the silence. Lucifer was lost in thought, fury, gleeful and radiant, along with melancholy for his own personal failure as a father...even if he would not admit it.

Beibhinn swallowed down her bitterness at his words. As if he could understand even the smallest bit of what she felt...? Everything that she'd been through, all since she'd first laid eyes on him all those years ago...She bit her tongue angrily, her eyes beginning to well up with hot tears of anger. She blamed him for all of it, every last terrible thing that had happened to her or those she cared about...It all had to be blamed on him, she was innocent, after all...

She let the silence simmer, allowing her emotions to wrestle and entangle themselves as she tried to think of something, anything to make the pains go away. Anything at all...to make anxiety cease, the pounding in her head to quiet. She couldn't make anything surface, though...Nothing practical, so she just bottled up her emotions again, like she had for the past three years. Hidden and stuff deep down inside where he couldn't use them to hurt her.

The only interruption to their private thoughts would be the return of the maid with their food.

The food arrived, and with it, the savory aroma of the fish, a seared ocean tuna with cracked pepper spices. The risotto, creamy and earthy with the scent of mushrooms, the strong citrus kick of his margarita and grapefruit, which was cut into four equal segments and covered in a generous helping of wild cane sugar. Her own food arrived as well, but frankly, Lucifer set upon his own like a wolf, starting in heavily on the drink at hand. Sweet, ice-cold, limey like an english bloke, and with the strong, fiery kick that only tequila could bring. The older man downed about half of it before moving on to his food, every once in awhile giving her a glancing look.

He felt her gaze on his before the distraction got here. Her anger, her rage, her sorrow, and none of it half as moved him as first seeing her had. It was recent, but it felt like so long ago. All three "first times". Just last week. That day at the tracks, with her in the audience, and finally, the first time he ever met Beibhinn. He was so much younger then, and part of him had loved her, in a way that couldn't be described or understood by anyone. He still felt that somewhere deep inside, but this Beib wasn't like his old one. She was more naive, she was selfish to an extent, she didn't think, but...Still, it was her. Or it could've been her. Who knows?

"How's yer food?"

Beibhinn softly thanked the maid as she was handed her food. An array of dried fruits, crackers, cheeses, and meats. She stabbed a few pieces through with her talon before trying to eat more "typically." She nibbled quietly through her snack, trying to pretend that Lucifer wasn't even in the room with her. Of course, as soon as she'd dazed herself into that thought, he spoke. "It's good," she replied quietly, her mouth slightly full. She'd never really learned or been much for manners.

Beibhinn finished her meal quickly, ravenous as she had been. Honestly, she still felt a little hungry as her kind were typically big eaters. Twice their body weight was a good measure...or so her Momma had once said. Beibhinn placed her tray to the side and quietly tried to picture her again. Her mother for such a short amount of time...the image was fading from her mind. She wasn't even sure she remembered quite how her voice had sounded, either...

Once she was done with her own plate, he stood and slid the rest of his fish onto hers, without even asking. He knew she loved fish, especially tuna steaks and in truth, Luci didn't feel much like eating anymore. The risotto was fine, and grapefruit was finished, and his glass was empty. As time went on, he found himself sleeping more and eating less, and almost always tired, no matter what. Aging was...terrible.

"Ya need ta order more next time. Yer eating for two and ye be underweight as it is. Promise that, girly. Yer'll be tryin' ta eat more." The older man said it with as much concern as he could muster but it wasn't a natural emotion he could express. He checked his watch...and couldn't remember what her schedule for the day was. He thought it was her first check up, but maybe it had already happened while the race was happening...

Beibhinn slowly tilted her head at him, then the other direction. An odd habit she couldn't quite control when she was curious about something, and frankly him offering her food was unusual. After a moment of indecision, she nodded quickly and gobbled up the steak as quick as she could. She swallowed the last bites of it before finally responding to Lucifer's request. "I'll try...but you should remember how hard it is for me to gain weight." She and her adopted mother were both rail thin, a trait that seemed to be common among harpies.

As she placed the tray aside again, she placed one of wings over her stomach listlessly as she directed her stare out the window again. "I'm sure the chef will provide enough food..." she whispered softly. She was almost afraid to speak of him. He was probably the only employee she felt had any genuine positive feelings toward her. If Lucifer found something to blame on him because of her words...she didn't want to be responsible for him being fired.

"Aye, I'm sure he will as well. He better. I'll not be having ye starvin' just for a food budget. He knows anything and everything is available to him as long as he asks." He crossed his arms as she ate, giving her head another quick pat in the process. "And I not be asking ye ta gain weight. Just make sure yer eatin' enough for two is all." The violet haired gentleman couldn't exactly thing of where to go from here, but some thing was certain...

"One day, I'll be dead Beib, I'll be out of ye hair for good. I'm not gonna be around fer much longer. Ten, twenty years at the most probably." Luci moved away from her, his eyes fixed outside. "I've built something wonderful, grand, terrible...And I be havin' two heirs to split it to. I couldn't be happier, truly." A lie. Things could've gone perfect, but that wouldn't have been as fun, or as memorable.

Beibhinn closed her eyes tightly as his hand touched her head again. She felt the need to pull back, but she let herself hold still. Willed herself to. Who, in three years, had given her any sort of affection, after all...? She sighed softly and listened as he spoke, fatigue beginning to weigh on her. Her head bobbed downward a few times and before he'd spoke the last word, her head had drooped down and to the side, resting against the pillows on the window seat.

The food, the warm blanket, Lucifer's soothing, manipulative voice...All of it stacked up with her lack of sleep and swept her into her dreams. Into her escape. Or as close to an escape as she could find. After all, she still had nightmares.h
