The motions were memorized, as relaxing as they were challenging. The pole was an extension of her arm: sweeping, passing from hand to hand behind her back as she ended in a lunge, the pole facing east, and the elaborate watercolor painting that hung along that wall. Her breathing was slow, measured, and it was a moment before she finally looked to her right, where Randin stood watching.

The woman smiled.

"I forgot there's nowhere to knock on these damned paper doors." She said with a small chuckle. Rising to her feet, she planted one end of the pole into the mat, gripping it with her right hand while she planted her left against her hip. Brown curls were matted to her forehead, her skin damp. She'd been at this for a while.

"Don't let me stop you," she said finally, holding an arm out and gesturing to the other half of the room.

"I don't bite."

"I'm flattered." She tossed the pole off to the side, interlacing her fingers behind her back and stretching until the vertebrae crackled. Releasing, she rolled her shoulders a few times as she walked across the mat, behind him.

Circling him.

"You look like the kind of guy who carries a couple of .40's." she noted, coming to a stop when she was facing him. He had her easily by at least six inches, and maybe a hundred pounds. But she was always taught to use her enemy's strengths against them, when the time was right.

"Actually, you sort of remind me of this one guy I saw in that Expendables movie. Just don't go easy on me, cowboy."

She took a step back, setting her position, keeping her knees bent as she brought up her arms. "Name's Bethany, by the way."

Defense was tight. It didn't help that he had arms like steel bars. She relaxed for a moment, leaning back into her left heel, pausing, breathing. Ultimately, she decided to start standard. She faked a right hook, stopping a few inches away from his face as she rapidly aimed a kick to his right side.

"Men always like to go on the defensive," she said under her breath, grinning the whole time.

He had surprised her. Honestly, she didn't think someone his size could move as quickly as he did. Making a note of that, she quickly brought her leg back behind her, shuffling back a step as he attempted to drive his elbow into her abdomen. She tried to block, glancing his blow, but she still felt the force of it as she was driving back, gritting her teeth from impact.

She laughed as he returned to stance. "Is it too late to apologize for the Expendables comment?"

Watching him, she reset her position.

"Your turn."

She just barely managed to lean back in time to avoid the straights, his knuckles coming within a hair's breadth of her nose. She ducked low to the right, avoiding the hook and causing his kick to come short.

That was when she dropped to a crouch, swinging out her left leg to catch his balancing leg at the ankle.

Dodging the punches was cake. Yet, when he rushed her at a startling pace, she admittedly wasn't quite prepared for all of that muscle getting up in her business. She grunted as the impact came, driving the breath from her lungs and sending her scrambling. He was like a damned bulldozer.

Rather than let him knock her off-balance, however, she latched a hand to that arm that had intended to knock her flat, and threw her other arm around the back of his neck.

She attempted to drive her knee into his abdomen sharply, a quick thrust.

"Jason Statham," she said, "With more hair."

She was equally just as breathless, in the oddest position as she could ever find herself. With her arm still firmly locked behind his neck, and her body pinned the way it was against his chest...she knew she was going nowhere.

So she just hung out for a second.

"Never saw it," she panted, closing her eyes a moment. "Y'know, heh, usually guys take me to dinner before getting all personal like this." She smiled a moment, resisting the urge to rest her forehead on his shoulder.

"Call it a draw, Randin?"

She metaphorically dusted herself off, leaning around Randin to get a good look at Marlene. Had she been watching the fight the entire time?

Not nearly as embarrassed as her partner, she adjusted her tank-top, offering a wave to Marlene before glancing around in search of her things. Her duffle sat in the corner, and she immediately made her way over to it, picking up her belt with the gun holster and fixing it to her waist. Afterwards, she grabbed the handles of the bag itself and slipped it up over her shoulder.

As she meandered her way back over to Randin, something in the back of her mind clicked, making her wish that she could just slam her head into the wall.

"I know this is a bit belated, but you wouldn't happen to be Randin Kaye, would you?" Her brow knit together.

"I'm Detective Bethany Foster, and I'm fairly certain you should have gotten my transfer paperwork from INTERPOL."

She really hoped she was talking to the right person.

"Nullum crimen hoc spondeo." Casey offered, still reaching to take Marlene's hand as the woman offered it to her. Her handshake was firm. "And I'll keep that in mind. He did warn me that he likes to play rough." She glanced back to Randin with a smile.

"I didn't mind, but that's hardly the point. I'm glad everything translated correctly. Boss gave me a name, but no face, and when I heard that your name was Randin, well...I figured, how many people in this city could share that name? It was worth a shot." She put her hands on her hips.

"Glad I took it, too. I just very nearly beat my own boss in a fight." She glanced back to Marlene and, with a subtle wink, said,

"Puto me capere vellet in."

ā€œAh, I appreciate it, but I really should be heading back home.ā€ Casey started, giving the pair of them an apologetic smile. She adjusted the strap of her duffel, checking to make sure she had everything before finally looking up to meet Randinā€™s eyes.

There was a mischievous expression there, hidden beneath the polite smile. ā€œThanks for the exercise. It was fun. Definitely worth a rematch. Suppose Iā€™ll be seeing you by the office to pick up my badge.ā€

With a nod of the head, she bid them both goodbye, and walked across the mat before slipping into her shoes and exiting the dojo.

Best first impression, ever.

She turned to look back over her shoulder.

"Dead or not, Latin's the foundation of the Romance languages. Call me an optimist, but I've always thought it would come in useful regardless."

Harder to hurt. Stronger. Faster. Ok. That was what guns were for, worst case.

She quirked a brow. "Alrighty Mister Expendable, Marlene. It's been grand. Have a good night, you two."

With that, she disappeared out of the dojo.

Casey was never the type to push too much for making herself look presentable. In her mind, the more she could blend in, the better. In this case, however, she was meandering around the Wing City Police Department, taking things to her desk, one that she shared with another Detective who sat right across from her. She wanted to make a good impression, so she'd come dressed rather sharply. Pressed black slacks, flats, and a white button-down with the sleeves rolled to her elbows.

She had no family photos, no real significant memoirs, just the typical office supplies, with a small clock sitting at the corner, in the shape of an owl. She hesitated, looking over her things for a few moments before she decided to take a tour around the place.

Self-guided as it was, it wasn't long before she'd rounded the whole building, coming upon the offices that held the higher-ups. Her eyes narrowed at one plaque in particular.

"Marlene?" she suddenly asked, knocking on the door and pushing it inward.

"You here? Sorry if I'm bothering..."

She hesitated for a fraction of a second before coming into the office, letting the door click shut behind her as she walked to the chair, resting her hands on the arms before lowering herself into the seat. She reached for the glass that Marlene offered, bringing it closer before sitting back in the chair and crossing one leg over the other.

"Thank you." she said, lifting the glass to the other before bringing it to her lips. The warm, burning sensation spilled over her tongue, allowing her some small pleasure. She was glad she hadn't taken any of her medication today. It was strange, almost like Marlene had expected her to come.

"I'm not interrupting am I?" she asked, sitting up a bit straighter in her chair. "I didn't think anyone else would be around so late at night."

"The fact that I like to keep some of my personal history private shouldn't be any cause for concern." Casey replied amiably, very talented in keeping her emotions in check. She sipped at the ambrosia, her tongue flicking out against her lower lip before she aimlessly held the glass off to one side.

Her eyes slid back towards Marlene. "I took multiple self defense courses during grade school. Tai kwon do was my personal favorite." she grinned. "Some people have a knack for it, I guess. I got good. I practiced. Pitted myself against opponents that I knew could kick my ass, and learned how to beat them."

She chuckled. "The key was that I wanted to be good at it."

Casey very nearly choked on her drink. Forcing herself to swallow, she was barely able to contain the sudden burst of laughter.

"My goodness Marlene!" she exclaimed. "Whatever happened to distrusting a person because they'd given you a reason to distrust them?" She shook her head incredulously, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. "But hey, at least you're forward about it. Most women would have simply tittered behind my back."

She set down the glass, barely touched as it was. "For what it's worth, I thought you were an interesting character." Whether she liked her or not was difficult to say. She was quick though.

"But I'm afraid I'm going to have to disappoint you. There is really nothing to be learned by looking beyond the information you've already found in my file."

Her smile had an edge.

"And I don't succumb to intimidation, either."

Casey stared at the weapon for a long moment, her eyes flickering to Marlene's forearms. Things had gotten tense, though it didn't show in her expression or body language. She maintained a casual air, planting her hands on the arms of the chair before easing herself to a standing position.

"Why not?" she replied, stepping around the chair and walking to the office door. Grasping the handle, she turned and gave it a quick tug, stepping aside to allow the other woman to walk through.

"I'll follow you."

Casey made a show of stifling a yawn.

"God I'm just not sleeping well at all." She said, squinting one eye shut before heaving a sigh. "Oh, ah. No thank you. I like to stick to what I know." She offered a slight smile. In truth, she didn't think Marlene mistrusted her because she was a threat.

She knew she mistrusted her because there were parts of Casey that she didn't know about. Fear of the unknown was a very realistic, very potent kind. And Marlene seemed to be the type who was very accustomed to knowing what was going on.

"That sounds like a shot I had, once." she mused. "And you're right! It did make me kind of chatty."

"Do you really have nothing better to do than harass me, Marlene?" Casey picked up the gun, checking the magazine to make sure it was loaded, before snapping the cartridge back into place and taking aim.

Six bullets in rapid succession, each of them striking the target at kill points. Three on the heart, two in the head...

...one in the groin.

"It's almost funny. Not once during this entire conversation have you thought to ask me, directly, what it is you're so damnably curious to find out."

"I call that cheating."

Without so much as blinking, the cartridge was released, and she slammed another magazine into the chamber. Two shots.

"I'm a woman with a history."

Another shot.

"Believe it or not, I'm here to help."

Two more bullets, one in each eye. "And the WCPD, because it's the only establishment in this entire city that doesn't seem to have its balls in the grasp of some kind of underling mafia society."
