Shows no emotion while fighting, this makes him hard to read.
There were originally three races of dragon, fire, storm, and wind (Storm for sure, the other two I'm not sure, I must check.) But, later there was a fourth race, created by the grim reaper himself: Shadow. They were perfect for the grim reaper, as were made by him to be perfect. However, the original, and only one at the time became too powerful for the grim reaper. The grim reaper decided that the only way to control it was to seal it away in a different dimension.
The only way for a dragon to become part shadow, is to become corrupted. The more the corruption, the darker in color of their souls and ranged attacks (lightning for storm) would become until they were black. Once the corruption got to the point where their attacks were black, they could start to travel through shadows. The first time they would travel through a shadow, it would bring them to the dimension that the original shadow dragon was sealed in.
Once inside the dimension, the shadow dragon would give them some power, that had to be unlocked through the absorbing of an orb of raw power, which could only be given to them by the current grim reaper.
Derrick was born into a clan of Storm Dragons, and he was not corrupted and pure. The tradition of that clan was once the male child of the family was old enough to reproduce, the female (Who was always born first) would hypnotize their little brother, and mate with them, keeping the blood line strong.
After that had happened, the soul of his child was given to him, and he was supposed to give it to his mate. But he didn't, he ate it, keeping it safe. The clan was wiped out soon after, leaving only him alive. Over time he had found out about the shadow dragon, and how to meet it. He became a corrupted soul, eating normal souls for power, or just stealing the corruption from someones soul and keeping them alive. He became a full fledged storm-shadow soon after he met someone who would change his life. His meeting with this person and everything past that is in the posts.
