----

Koken'in; guardian of the Root Lands.

Koken'nin is a consecrated young warrior from the fabled Root Lands; a mystical forest cut away from the rest of Terra by a perception altering field. He is of Deistic influence and his prowess, whilst at first alarming, can quickly turn ambrosial. He lives not to destroy, but to protect his ancestral lands where so few are left. He wields the Nedake Ken.

Apple; faithful companion.

Apple is of the Root Walker tribe; deer-like mammals who roam and feed on vegetation. Apple and Koken'nin share a brotherly bond reinforced through a childhood spent together. Apple's antlers are enough to out-best Steel and his butt can easily break down a wall. However, his skill remains in his ability to project his soul into physical form, often inflaming himself in burning blue fire for a variety of effects. He has also learned to speak, allowing for easy communication with Humans.

Nedake Ken; legendary blade.

The Nedake Ken is a Chokuto-like blade encompassed by an ebony scabbard and guardless hilt, where a strand of red silk is its only decoration. In another man's hands, the blade's raw sharpness can cut through steel and its raw density is higher than diamond. However, as a sword that specifically chose Koken'nin, Nedake Ken's strength directly mimics that of its wielder in his hands; to break it, you must be able to break Koken'nin and so on. It also cuts only to Koken'nin's inner will, meaning his subconscious feelings towards a particular object or person dictates its ability to harm.

The Root Lands; a mysterious paradise.

The Root Lands is a mystical forest hidden away by a perception altering field. Surrounding it on all sides, with a total area roughly twenty times that of the forest itself, is a large circle of land split between desert and tropical climates. It is inhabited by human warrior tribes, who fight a war between themselves with the hope of eventually invading the center. The Root Lands themselves have never been fully explored, not even by those who know the land best; where ones feet seem to disappear into flowing silver silk that splashes like water. Interaction is rare, one can often go years without seeing another face and barely a hundred sapient beings are left, most living a life of solitude and peace among the gardens and forest floors. Most of these are of Deistic influence, either God-spawn, or Gods themselves. The most common creatures are called "Gigi" and are found almost everywhere; coming in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours but rarely, if ever, larger than a dog.

So begins...

"Ah! It's a human!" Koken'nin said in fright, leaping up into a tree to take cover.

Apple merely stood there, lifting a front paw to lick it with a wet tongue. "He doesn't like Humans," Apple explained idly. "At least... He always reacts like that when he sees one."

Koken'nin, by this point, was sat on the opposite side of the trunk, his arms and legs crossed and a frown on his face. Damnit, why couldn't the Human have just been a giant forest Wyrm? He preferred those, at least they didn't smell as bad!

Eventually, he peaked out from behind the tree and narrowed his eyes. "You're naked. Don't you Humans know how to wear clothes?"

"I'm not as egocentric or destructive as Humans are, I'll have you know. And no, I'm not Human at all," Koken'nin answered.

Apple stopped cleaning, and sat himself down with the yawn of a large dog. "More to the point," the creature began, "what was that thing back there? It looked corrupt, evil almost. It gave me a bad feeling, if I was to be perfectly honest. And since Koken'nin's sword was capable of killing Ooze, something that would realistically be essentially invulnerable to weapons, something foul must have been afoot."

The young man eventually slid down from the tree and began to approach.

"I see," Apple replied. "Well, me and Koken'nin can help with that. If this was our home we would do the same, so it simply doesn't feel right to abandon someone else's to such a fate. Who knows, this could get worse?"

Koken'nin sighed as he stood besides Apple. "I suppose he's right," he began, "so I guess we'll help. Do you know where they're coming from at all? That way me and Apple can go straight there and see what's going on." He seemed a little impatient.

Apple stood, yawning once more. "Of course, you are free to come along, Miss. Though it might be best for all of us if you were to find some clothes first. If that is at all an option."

"You're Rann?!" Koken'nin literally shouted, his voice alerting basically every animal within a mile of his surprise. "I... Uhh.. Never mind."

Apple could have laughed, but decided to keep it to himself. "You need not change into that form should you be so against it," he replied, "I am sure Koken'nin can look the other way. And I, am Apple. I'm a spirit of the Root Lands. Except that I'm alive, but we call ourselves Spirits anyway. Either way, Miss Imani, lead on!"

Apple immediately began to follow, leaping without Koken'nin into the trees in order to follow the woman's beastly form. Koken'nin himself gave chase, shouting something along the lines of "hey, wait up!" as his fast strides kept him almost at pace with the two of them, though eventually he would begin to fall a little behind.

Apple and Koken'nin had a mutual understanding when it came to the subject of Apple been ridden as a steed. People were heavy, and Apple had hammered this into Koken'nin's understanding and as a result, sometimes the man would have to use his own feet.

To Koken'nin, this whole event should have been exhausting, but his endurance was evidently far higher than some would expect. When Rann came to a halt, so did Apple, who stopped without a skid, followed by Koken'nin who slid into the back of him.

The two were panting a little, but all in all seemed perfectly fine and gazed on at the same mass of darkness that the Wyrm herself had discovered.

"I guess we found it," Koken'nin said, drawing his sword for the danger he was expecting ahead.

Apple bowed his head in agreement and kicked back at the ground with his front paw. "So, that is the source. Defeating it here will solve the issue, will it not?"

Next to the beast, the wyrm and even Apple, Koken'nin felt very... Small. His sword was not the largest, nor was he, and to his opponent his weapon might as well be a tooth pick. Would it be enough? Would he just get in the way of the woman's Wyrm form?

He frowned a little, then mounted Apple as a steed, who began to trot closer. Fighting together as a mounted warrior would strengthen their chances of victory and they both knew it. After all, the Knight who slays the Dragon usually rides a horse.

"What now?" Koken'nin called up, while Apple surveyed.

Apple burst into the trees as fast as he could, the trunks and bushes providing limited cover against the spiked projectiles. They both came out of the first attack unscathed, however, and Apple soon found himself leaping up onto a high branch and peering across the clearing at the enemy.

"Apple, go! It's coming for us!" Koken'nin yelled, giving his large, furry companion a hasty pat until he jumped down to the ground and set off sprinting through the twisted trees.

As the horrific creature of black ooze began to get closer, Koken'nin looked into his satchel for a blowpipe and dart and span around on Apple's back until he came face to face with the monstrosity.

Despite the ride being shaky, Koken'nin managed to keep balance; and keep his hands steady enough to load the ammunition into the bamboo-made weapon. Bringing it to his mouth, he fired, the dart shooting out at the beast with an impact-triggered explosive charge.

It would hopefully make the beast reel, but on the flip side, it would also send Koken'nin and Apple sprawling into the bushes.

Koken'nin and Apple both flew, hit the ground, then rolled until bush or tree stopped them from going any further. One by one, they rose, Apple looking rather annoyed with Koken'nin as the black droplets finished raining.

"Couldn't you have warned me you were going to do that?" The beast growled.

"I was busy!" Koken'nin retorted, before drawing his sword again and using it to flick off the droplets that had landed on him. Apple's fur, however, was thick, and would require some more seeing to.

"Nope," Koken'nin said, trying not to look at the woman, though he was much more mature about it than before, probably due to the fact they had just fought that... Thing.

"I'm expecting it to try and reform, so I'll cut it down before it can get big enough to eat me. You saw how my sword killed that thing that got you, right? Maybe it will work the same on all of them."

Apple, meanwhile, was trying to shake his fur clean and had a little trouble doing so. "Koken's using his head for once!"

Koken'nin approached the reforming beast and made a quick, clean cut across its centre mass, hoping that the blade's power to ward off evil could destroy the evil magic.

"Yes, yes, I understand," Apple grumbled, appearing to frown at the state of his coat. "Why does everything have to be so messy and sticky?"

Sheathing his sword, Koken'nin turned back to Imani and sighed. "Can't you at least wear like... A leaf or something?"

"Not much to tell, really," he answered with a shrug. "It's called Nedaki-Ken and I found it and it's a pretty good sword."

"And yes, that is better. And stop mocking me! It's not my fault that I'm young and impressionable and you're a woman who likes wandering around in the nude! As soon as we find civilization I'm finding you some clothes. Even I wear clothes and I don't even have a house."

Apple just sat there, chuckling.

Apple sighed in relief as the drops disappeared, and gave himself one last shake for good measure.

Koken'nin however, was frowning and scowling at Imani. "You're some sort of temptress, aren't you Rann? You're not having my soul, believe me!"

At her last question, he shrugged a little. "Well, maybe not civilization... But as long as there's the need to find the source of this corruption we have to start somewhere, right?"

"I am not even interested in having this conversation!" Koken'nin replied, "let's just focus on the issues at hand!"

"So... How are we going to find where these things are coming from? I suppose if we get to high ground we might see something, but then again, hiding in a forest is easy..."

Apple stood, his back standing at a height a good head taller than Koken'nin. "I suggest leaving this place, as it knows we've been here, and finding a place to rest until dark," the beast said, his voice entering their minds. "I can see in the dark, and the night is likely when all things foul will come out."

"Sure, that sounds good. Half a mile north when the sun sinks below the horizon," Koken'nin answered, as he strapped his sword to his back and half considered climbing atop Apple again. He decided not to, as the beast would probably get annoyed if he did so.

Apple, meanwhile, was already beginning to move away from the clearing, using his snout to sniff out any possible dangers ahead. "It's all clear!" He called back, before Koken'nin turned and jogged towards him to make their separate way.

Fagrim marched through the underbrush of the Dark Woods. He leaned on his staff, heaving every now and then from the exertion of the hike. Two companions trailed behind the dwarf. One was a skeletal wolf that wandered to and fro from tree to tree, bones rattling as it prowled, and the other was a tall silent figure clad in body armor. The armored man carried a cudgel at his hip, and he kept a careful watch on the surrounding woods through the tinted lens of a black biker helmet.
